Telegraph Bride: Sweet Historical

Rate this book
When Elizabeth Stemple lost her husband in the Civil War, she also lost her home and livelihood, forcing her to move to the factory town of Lowell, Massachusetts. After living in her own home and being on her own for all those war years, having to share a single dorm room with five other women had been hard. Elizabeth was desperate to get out of the factory town.
Elizabeth hadn’t really thought about what could go wrong with the mail order bride idea. Even if she had, the man not meeting her because he was in jail would not have been on the list. She’d jumped at the first opportunity to get out of Lowell without weighing the consequences.
And look where it had gotten her. Alone in the middle of nowhere with very little cash.

An historical mail-order bride short story.
Book two in the series.
Short 1 - Double Wedding
Short 2 - Telegraph Bride
Short 3 - Sheriff's Bride
Short 4 - Lawyer Bride

This is the second book in Ms. Burnett's Mail Order Brides of Tribilane series, and it's the second book by her that I have read. The first book I read was the first in the series, Double Wedding: Sweet Historical. If I remember correctly that was Ms. Burnett's first book, and I was pretty impressed with it; I gave it 31/2 stars. IMO this book was even better. The story is nicely written, and is nicely edited. William and Elizabeth are both likeable characters, although the character development is somewhat lacking; I would have liked to have gotten more information about their personal history. Elizabeth we know is a widow who lost her husband in the civil war, while we know nothing about William.

In any event, William and Elizabeth meet when she travels to town to become a mail order bride. William is the station master at the train station, so naturally the two meet when Elizabeth's intended fails to show up to meet her. Very quickly the issue with Elizabeth's future husband is resolved and circumstances unfold in such a manner as to allow Elizabeth and William to be in daily contact with one another. Eventually, love blossoms between the two.

While the story was fairly entertaining I didn't feel vested in the romance that developed between the protagonists. There is really only one tender, private moment between the couple before William declares his love and even that was very brief. The rest of the story gave brief insight into their day to day interactions with one another. Despite this drawback I still enjoyed the story. IMO it shows definite improvement over book one, and I look forward to reading the next book in the series, Sheriff's Bride: Sweet Historical Mail Order Brides of Lowell, which is the story of William's brother and Elizabeth's good friend, Suzanna. FYI this is a squeaky clean romance. Happy reading!

Quick and sweet romantic read

This is a quick sweet romantic read, Mrs Elizabeth Stemple is a widow and in desperation she becomes a mail order bride only to find when she arrives in Lowell, Massachusetts her intended is actually in jail but Elizabeth is a practical and intelligent woman and yes she's in a new town with no friends and very little money but that's not something she can't overcome.
I loved this little romance and the 3 stars I've given is a reflection of the length not the content.

Very sweet short story. Well written, introduced several characters, thus opening up potential books.

Recommended if you are a fan of mail order brides stories. I wish it was a full book length.
