I wanted a short sci-fi fix and entered a world of Summoners and Levellers who had a long symbiotic relationship, reliant on one another to support them through their changes (the Christmas) of the title). However, with the arrival of the Earthers (read humans) land is grabbed, many aspects of their relationship are prohibited and a schism occurs between them.

By accident Aton a Summoner and Lyndel a Leveller King meet and through their bond finds parts of himself the Earthers had suppressed through enslavement. Their meeting means a changed world for all.

Read the extended version to get a clearer picture of the world building and for some latter scenes to make sense.

This is a short story but as is often the case although interesting a few points required clarification.

I really had a hard time finishing this story, even though it is short. The audiobook was awful. The voices harsh and didn't seem fitting. Beyond that, I didn't get a good idea of what the creatures looked like, why the humans were there and awful, how their society worked, or anything. The world building lacked.

The king was a horrible person, the only one I liked was Aton and he was confusing.

I own book 2 but doubt I'll bother to read it.
