All the Gory Details is a podcast by Nate and Stevie, two best friends who share a love for all things true crime. When a miscalculation on their part halts the podcast, they think that they will never recover from it. Until, a strangely familiar crime happens 17 years later and brings them back. The twists and turns in this one will have you changing your mind EVERY CHAPTER on whodunit. Now, I did predict this ending early on, but I did switch my mind a few times. The author was very good at leaving the reader wondering until the very last chapter. I really enjoyed this book. It was a fast paced read that kept me on my toes. Thank you to Lucy Goacher and Net Galley for a copy of this ARC for my review.
Only Murders in the Building,
Nate & Stevie, besties since high school, now run a true-crime podcast together. Their podcast, "All the Gory Secrets", comes under scrutiny when they falsely blame the boyfriend in an unsolved murder case in their hometown. Forced to take a break from the podcast, Stevie begins to notice that murders taking place in towns nearby begin to feel as though she is living in one of the episodes of her podcast. Nate insists they should restart the podcast, but Stevie is hesitant...As they investigate these new crimes, Stevie realizes she may not know as much about the hometown murder & about Nate as she thinks she does...
If you enjoy true crime Netflix series or podcasts, I highly recommend you read this book! It seems to be a popular trend this year to incorporate podcasts/Netflix series into books & I am here for it! I loved how some chapters were podcasts from the book. The story took place from multiple POVs, which left me wondering who I should trust! Although I am not a fan of unreliable narrators, this book slowly revealed different secrets (one might say "Small Secrets" ) that allowed me to figure out who the killer was! I will say that I predicted the ending, but none-the-less enjoyed the journey to the end of the book.
Lastly, be sure to read the acknowledgement at the end! This crime fiction novel held an underlying concept of reflecting on respect when it comes to true-crime, as well as being conscious of how we process real-life events vs. stories. I loved this deep underlying concept & it truly made the book enjoyable for me. Lucy Goacher also has another thriller, The Edge, that was published in 2022 that I will for sure be adding to my list!
A big thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my (as always) honest review!
Meh. This book seemed to begin with an interesting premise, but it was boringly formulaic. I had the killer and their motive figured out at around the halfway mark. It was so glaringly obvious that I thought this book was the first thing Goacher had published. But apparently not. God only knows how much more sophomoric her previously released titles are.
All throughout the book there were little digs at men. Both outright accusations that men are are just murderous b'stards, and sly remarks about crap like "mansplaining". It made me instantly dislike the author and not want the main female character to solve the crime and survive whatever ordeal would inevitably befall her before the denouement. (Trust me, this book is so predictable it's ridiculous. I have no idea why it has so many good reviews.)
Thankfully I got to read it via Amazon Kindle Unlimited, so I didn't waste any more money on it. It was a quick short read that required very little attention or brainpower to get through it. At one point my Kindle jumped ahead a couple of pages and I didn't even bother going back to read them because it was all just waffle and fluff designed to get you from the kick off to the finale.
The ending was crap and annoying too. But I sorta figured it would go something like that. (I don't know why I'm going out of my way to avoid giving spoilers because anyone with half a brain will figure it out for themselves PDQ.)
This book was just some crappy trash that I picked up on a whim and rushed through it as soon as possible. I don't recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good thriller. I don't recommend it for anyone really. And I definitely won't be reading anything else from this author.
This is one crazy, dark book about a true crime podcast and its hosts, Nate and Stevie. It begins with a Halloween party at Nate's when friend, Lauren is walking home and is murdered. And nothing will ever be the same! Nate and Stevie are fascinated by both crime and podcasts so this appears to be right up their alley as they get plenty of followers as "juicy details" are always fun to discuss. But then they suspect there's a "copycat" killer as old murders come to the forefront again as recent murders are replicated by someone they call Mimic. It's a great convoluted plot with lots of snarky humor and plenty of blood and darkness, but I loved it! Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC!
A well written book, perfect for true crime podcast lovers! Full review to follow :)
5* review alert! 🚨
Thank you so much Lucy for sending me a copy of your book! Fuming at myself for letting it sit there for so long! 🙈
Read this if you love: 🔪True Crime Podcasts 🔪 Small town secrets 🔪Trust no one!
Things I loved: •I’m just going to go out on a limb and say EVERYTHING. The Characters! The mimic of true crimes Vibe between the main characters The perspectives & how things change depending on your pov The ending!!
Things I didn’t love: •So this is something I liked… but it was a little grim at points. So it’s not for the faint of heart 😂
I’m 100% recommending this book & in the process of begging the author to let us read it for one of our book clubs soon 🙈🥲
Thank you Netgalley, Lucy Goacher, and Thomas + Mercer for the advanced ebook!! This was a fast paced thriller which I couldn’t put down! I love a book with a good podcast storyline. 2 best friends start a podcast to discuss their love of true crime. Not everyone is a fan. Their first episode was a hit but almost ended them in the long run. After a hiatus, crimes happening in the area start to seem eerily similar to the crimes they talked about on their podcast. Are the killers striking again or is someone copying the originals or sending the two a message? Things turn sinister fast and the ending I did not see coming!!!
A fresh thriller with interweaving elements of true crime. 🔥
‘Hello and welcome to the first ever episode of All the Gory Details…’
If you’re after a fast paced thrilling and gripping read, then look no further! This book can be defined as all of these things and I loved it!
This read is based around Stevie and Nate’s true crime podcast and how they were on a hiatus after information they shared in their first episode ruined someone’s life. Years later a murder fitting the same description as the crime in Episode 1 occurs and Stevie and Nate decide to investigate to try and redeem themselves. However, this is only the beginning when a second body is found.
I absolutely loved the books premise and the structure of this read. Between chapters there were Podcast episodes and I thoroughly enjoyed them. I found myself reading the podcasts in my head as if I was the host and I found this incredibly engaging.
Goacher has masterfully constructed a unique and high octane read that had me turning the pages quickly. The book is packed with red herrings, suspense and twists that all consume you when you’re reading and it was the best feeling.
I absolutely loved Stevie’s character and had mixed feelings about Nate. However, together they were a brilliant leading duo with their gallows humour and I loved the multiple POV aspect. I loved the connection of the crime to their podcast and how everything spread deeper than imagined. I also had no idea this book would contain crimes that were so graphic and juicy.
The last third of the book was compulsive and the dramatic climax with the assailant was so intense. That epilogue was superb! 😍
Goacher has crafted an excellent read that will keep you guessing and changing your mind about who the assailant is throughout. This was definitely the case with @jessielikestoread and I during our buddy read. I loved our conversations. 🥰
A huge thank you to Lucy Goacher for sending me this copy of Small Secrets. I highly recommend you check this out as I haven’t read something as thrilling as this in a while. 🔥
💬: ‘It's only after, with hindsight, that you realise things could have been different.’
‘Small Secrets’ is something I found on NetGalley and it was a free to download book, and I love free stuff, so I went ahead with it.
I didn’t know anything about the author (but now I’m following her on her socials and will make sure I definitely buy this book once it’s out) and the first page immediately put me off. Yeah, it did.
I thought this book would be like ‘Murder in the family’ because the premise is somewhat similar but I couldn’t be more wrong. The first few pages put me off because the format seemed too dull to me. I was thinking if the rest of the book will be following this format, I might have to DNF. But I’m glad I was proven wrong.
Small Secrets is about two podcasters who goes back to solve an old murder case from their hometown. But that’s not the only thing that happens in the story.
As a true crime fan, I found the mention of different real life actual true crime cases very interesting. The whole aspect of the plot and how it digs into the true crime community really hit too close to home for me. I won’t spoil anything but there’s a lot of cases involved in here and you will definitely enjoy every bit of this book.
But the second best thing for me were the characters. I fell in love with Nate and Stevie. Although the story keeps you on the edge of your seat and you’re constantly bombarded with information that you have to process and come up with theories of your own. I doubted every single character but that didn’t stop me from falling in love with a few of them.
I wish I could go into details but I promised myself I’ll keep this review spoiler free so those who are still contemplating their decision to read this book. All I can say is, please give this book a shot. Chapter one will have you hooked. I finished this within 24 hours. I just couldn’t stop thinking about who the culprit was.
With that being said, I’ll definitely check out more of this author’s works in future. She’s made her way up to my favourite author’s list. ✨
(Good luck for the release! I hope everyone gets to see how amazing this book is)
Stevie and Nate run a true crime podcast but are forced to go on a break when their accusations about the culprit of a local murder are proven to be incorrect. Soon a new murder occurs which has a lot of similarities to this past case and the pair decide to look back into it, however are unprepared for the horrors that follow.
I took a chance randomly on The Edge, Lucy Goacher’s first book, last year and I loved it, therefore was very excited to read the second novel and it has proven that the author is not just a one hit wonder. The author has demonstrated that she is a very talented writer who creates well crafted, clever stories which are definitely thrilling!
I really enjoyed the use of true crime and the references to some real cases. I found I was very engaged in the story and connected to the two main characters. The character development was very well done and I enjoyed the easy banter between them. What I also really liked about this book was that the author did not shy away from including very dark, gory detail (I don’t know what that says about me!) and I found myself shocked at a few of the cases. At first I wasn’t sure about the podcast element but I quickly grew to really enjoy it. Although some elements were slightly unbelievable and I was able to predict the majority of the twists and turns this had no effect on the overall story and I found myself gripped throughout. Overall this was a fantastic, fast paced thriller and the author has quickly risen to be one of my favourites. I hope there will be a new one soon! Thanks NetGalley and the publisher for this copy in return for an honest review.
I stayed up ‘till 2am finishing this. I’m 31- way to old to be doing that. I absolutely loved this one. I read a lot of crime stuff from Amazon and it’s mostly only OK, but this was pacey and gripping.
As a consumer of a lot of true crime podcasts, it really got me thinking about my role in glorifying the crimes of these people and it gave me the ick, which is a testament to the writing and believable nature of the characters.
I worked out who the killer was pretty early on, but the ending was fuck of twists and turns that I was still so shocked.
This follows lifelong friends Stevie and Nate who start a crime podcast together, called "All The Gory Details". They decide episode one will be about the Murder of Lauren who grew up in their hometown. Their podcast gets a bit too much attention and falsely accuses someone of being a suspect in Lauren's murder, causing them to stop recording just after they started. Fast forward, they learned from their mistakes and begin the podcast again. Shortly after starting up again, murders that happened years ago are being copied by someone in the present, haunting Stevie and Nate.
I was pleasantly surprised by this one. It is dark for a crime thriller but interesting since there are so many crime podcasts out there now. I was a little shocked at the end, but that was the point!
I won this in a goodreads giveaway, all opinions are my own.
Lately, I enjoy reading books that incorporate true crime podcasts. This was no exception, I enjoyed reading all the different POVs and tried to figure it out by myself. I liked the narration and even liked the acknowledgment at the end. I will find the previous book by this author and I am looking forward to reading her future ones too.
Absolutely loved this - as a devoted listener of true crime podcasts, I found the friendship between the two main characters to be realistic and enjoyable, and the personal validation that they get from running their podcast to be credible. This book is a quick read and a delight.
This Lucy Goacher novel has a very interesting premise. The opening hooks you instantly and the rest of the book holds your attention until the very last page;
Best friends and podcast co-hosts recalling the night their small town was struck terror - the murder of young Lauren. A typical teenage party that took a turn - from missing to murdered. ‘A bloody shoe? And no body? Not a great sign’. Found murdered in a nearby farm house, Lauren was positioned like sleeping beauty with a bunch of dead wild flowers in her hands. ‘Whether it was someone who knew her, or someone who didn’t, they’ve walked free for thirteen years’.
Almost 17 years later , when another young girl goes missing, Stevie and Nate decide to give the podcasting another shot and start to investigate this case. Stevie thinks there’s a link, Nate isn’t convinced. Not until they visit the abandoned farmhouse in Foxbridge.
What once was a hobby could now be vital to stopping a killer.
This book jumps between past and present in a well crafted manner; big reveal -> blast from the past (if I explain this any more it’ll be a spoiler!). Trust me when I say it’ll make sense when you read it, and you’ll love it.
Descriptive, graphic, and eerie writing, what’s not to love! When reading this you should remember 3 things:
1. Keep your lights on 2. Lock your doors 3. Never trust the boyfriend!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Two identical murders. Steven years apart. Stevie and Nate run a true-crime podcast for four years before they have to take a short hiatus. The hiatus is because of some things they said in their first episode about a murder. When another murder happens, Nate wants to start up the podcast again. But deaths keep happening and the deaths are connected to past episodes they had on their podcast.
This book intrigued me right from the beginning. I liked the podcast aspect of it. I fell off the book a little bit but not much. It might have been my own fault. When I got to the middle of the book, my attention was grabbed again and it stayed grab until the end. 4.5 out of 5 stars.
"And remember!" "It's always the boyfriend!" 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Lucy Goacher, the literary genius, is back with a new book, and it threw me for an emotional roller coaster ride. The book is absolutely brilliant, as Goacher's works always are. This book is about a true crime podcasting duo, who discovers that their true crime cult following isn't what it seems.
It has a Dual POV, and morally grey characters. And we all know how much we love morally grey characters. The ending is PHENOMENAL and I think every thriller reader should pick this one up.
Absolutely brilliantly written book. Personally, I don't like reading about serial killing themes, but this book kept me riveted throughout. I just wanted to keep on reading it.
I don’t know why I borrowed this from KU but it’s kept me traveling side by side for the entire story. I don’t usually read crime stories. However this one caught my attention and I had to read it. I’m glad I did.
That was one twisty book! Loved the narrators. I did predict the killer early on but it had me second guessing myself over and over. I don’t want to give any spoilers but the end made me 😱
