Love in Sunshine

One Small Spark

Rate this book
Nemesis: the inescapable agent of one’s downfall. See also Shepherd Callahan.

I can’t escape Callahan. Believe me, I’ve tried.

Ever since he opened his bike shop next door to my family’s bakery, the broody man’s been unavoidable. Whether he’s sauntering into our store to ask pointed questions about our pies or stealing my favorite parking spot, he’s skilled at getting under my skin.

He even schemed his way into the exclusive romance book club that finally issued me an invitation. The ladies there love him—and seem convinced I should love him, too.

Fat chance. I have my reasons for loathing the man, I don’t care how many romantic books he reads.

When I accidentally learn his secrets, I find myself developing an unwelcome soft spot for my supposed nemesis. He’s kinder and more protective than I ever guessed, and I’m drawn to him in ways I don’t care to admit.

My default is sour, not sweet. I don’t swoon, I snark. I can’t open myself up to him, even if I’m starting to want to.

But when he kisses me like his life depends on it? My downfall is inevitable.

One Small Spark is a one-sided enemies to lovers rom-com with fade to black steam but only kisses on the page. The Love in Sunshine books can be enjoyed in any order.

This. Was. Delightful! I believe I have now read all but one of @gennycarrickwriter ‘s books and I think it’s my new favourite!

I thought the progression of Wren and Shepherd’s love story was so natural; I loved how it unfolded! He gets there before her but is so patient with Wren, who is so bad with feelings and emotions and affection!

I loved their communication, how Shepherd likes to needle Wren and get under her skin but also is so sweet to her, how he is gone for her just as she is and their banter and inner voices were hilarious! I highlighted and bookmarked a tonne; loved Shepherd and Wren!

And P.S. - loved we didn’t have to wait till after 70% for their first kiss!

Quotes:
“Her thumb grazes over a tattoo I got a year ago on my inner left biceps. I probably should have kept the hoodie on, but maybe I wanted this risk. I’ve played it safe with her for too long.“

“I’m glad you want to try. Because I’m already there.” I cannot with this man. Doesn’t he know those are inside thoughts?“

She backs up until she’s against my door, her hands behind her. “How do I look at you?” As if she doesn’t have a volcano of heat in her eyes right now. I close the last scrap of distance between us until we’re nearly touching. “Like you can’t decide if you’d rather fight me or kiss me.” Her laugh comes out breathy, her gaze stuck on my mouth. “It’s a really tough decision.” “Not for me.”

“I don’t ask for things like this often, so please understand the gravity of what I’m about to request.” She takes a deep breath. “But could you hug me, please?”

As unlikely as it sounds, Shepherd sees me, even at my worst, and still wants me. Still values me and likes me and cares for me. His tender kiss is a reminder that I don’t have to be somebody else. I just have to be me.

“That’s a wildfire waiting for a spark.”
I chuckle at her perfect assessment. I’ve been looking for a match for years.

Nobody’s ever missed me like that. Like I’m the oxygen he needs to survive. Like nothing else exists in the world beyond us. Like he’s been holding himself back and is finally set free.

It’s all fun and games until somebody’s making heart eyes in the middle of the romance book group.

Where are all the bitter and jaded people when I need them? Someone come give me cynical advice about my love life.

Might as well start giving in now. I plan to do a lot of it with her.

“That’s the only kind of relationship I want. A best friend I can’t keep my hands off of.”

“You are everything I crave in the exact right amounts.”

“It will take a lifetime to learn everything I want to know about you. I am never going to finish falling in love with you.”

Thank you to the author for the early copy. All opinions are my own (and obviously the correct opinions 🤭)

I was so excited for Wren and Shepherd’s story because their banter and chemistry was top notch. You might find yourself needing a fan a few times during this book.

Wren was darling. I loved how much she just wanted to protect herself. I loved how willing she was to change her opinions on things once she saw the full picture.

Shepard was deep. He was unafraid of his feelings, enjoyed romance books, attended a book group with old ladies, and so much more.

Favorite parts:
-the book club. Hilarious. Those ladies were awesome.
-Shepherd’s bread— and Wren’s reaction.
-Shepherd’s tattoos and the meanings behind them! Swoon.
-Shepherd’s weekly visit to Wren’s pie shop.
-that first kiss was so hot!
-Wren’s first visit to Shepherd’s cabin.

Favorite Quotes:
“Continue with your list of requirements in a boyfriend.” “Taking notes, are you?” “Extensive ones.”

“You wouldn’t hate it.” His voice is so sinfully smooth, I want to drizzle it over my waffles and eat it up.
“I hate everything you do.”
His mouth tips up on one side, his gaze taking its time roving over my face like a caress. When it lands on my lips, he locks in. “Do you?”
“So much.”

“You’re in my system for good.”

He just watches calmly while I spew out my feelings. Or most of them.
I exhale a huge sigh. Time for the big reveal. “I like you, okay? Against my better judgment.”
His mouth tips up. “Don’t go all Mr. Darcy on me. I might swoon dead away at your feet.”

I've been looking forward to reading Shepherd and Wren's story since I read Wren's sister's novel, Make Mine Sweet. I knew that sizzling tension and spark that was there between them would make for a fun story.

I loved how much these two were drawn to each other. Wren fought against admitting to her attraction, but Shepherd was clearly all in for her from the very beginning. It was fun seeing them thrown together by the book club ladies, too.

But some of the best things about this story were when Wren and Shepherd began actually spending time together, Wren acknowledging her past misunderstandings, and both of them giving in to their feelings. These two were so cute together! I loved this story so much!

A broody, tattooed MMC who also reads romance novels? What could be better than that? Right from the start, Shepherd and Wren absolutely drew me in. Since overhearing a conversation from him years earlier, Wren has considered him biggest enemy. Shepherd on the other hand has no such feelings, instead finding excuses to see her and get under her skin. So, all the banter and sass I love in an enemies to lovers PLUS all the pining!? Um, yes, please! Throw in a meddling book club and their crazy (and not at all subtle) antics, and I absolutely couldn't put this one down! The chemistry between these two was flying off the pages and that first kiss? So, so good! This one had me smiling right from the start and I absolutely couldn't get enough... it was another amazing addition to the series, and I loved every moment.

One Small Spark is a closed-door romance with fade to black/implied intimacy. It does have some innuendo and minimal minor language as well. It is the fourth book in the Love in Sunshine series. While those who have read the previous books will see some familiar characters, I do think this could be enjoyed as a standalone as well.

**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.

I feel like if you have had any glimpse into Genny's Sunshine universe then you have to be curious about Wren's animosity towards Shepherd. One Small Spark is an enemies to lovers romance showing us how Wren and Shepherd's relationship evolved and continues to evolve in present day. Another thing that is explored in this book is how your personal perception and past trauma can influence the way you perceive things people say that alter your views of reality. Wren is a strong woman, but has been burned in the past by men(specifically her father). This abandonment has affected the way she views herself and protects herself.

If you are looking for an enemies to lovers with meddling small town women, this is for you! I loved how sweet and genuine Shepherd was in this book. Despite Wren's attitude toward him, he was brutally honest at times and it was so endearing.

I loved returning to Sunshine!

Thank you Genny Carrick for the ARC!

I probably grinned the whole way through reading this. Wren kinda reminds me of the grinch. Quirky, grumpy, funny, and a good person.

Shepherd...ugh. Perfection. He is everything ooey gooey and wonderful.

Perfect amounts of pining, witty banter, resolving the past, and yummy kisses. A book that will leave you with book hangover because you want more.

Sheperd and Wren were like a warm blanket (or a fleece shirt) thath hugs you when you need it the most. I loved their bickering and get me a well meaning bunch of matchmaking old ladies every times if they come with a hilarious romance book club! The chemsitry between these two was already off the charts in the previous glimpses we had so it was bound to be sizzling and I loved how Sheperd managed to break all of Wren's walls. A must read full of great laughs and amazing sweetness!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
Book 4 of the Love in Sunshine Series - the absolute rivalry that these two exude is top tier. Shepherd is obsessed and will do anything to get Wren’s attention, especially push her buttons. Wren is allergic to losing and is very strong willed. They both put each other in their place. They find a way to be each others safe place even if they are sparring. They read each other well and care deeply about each other, even if there is some denial there too. Shepherd is so patient and kind to Wren, giving her so much grace.

It was such a sweet book. I so enjoyed all the dates and every interaction between Shepherd and Wren. There was not a dull moment between the two. My heart exploded so many times for them.

Also the side characters and growth not just personal or in their relationship but with their friends and family was huge. Also is Charlie getting a book?!?!

This is a fade to black romance with kissing and a butt smack. The fade to black is so vague and they talk about going to the bedroom and that is it. There are no details. Author includes a content warning at the beginning of the book.

Before I begin, I would like to thank Genny Carrick for allowing me to read a copy of her newly released book, One Small Spark, which is part of her Love in Sunshine series and is available on Amazon starting September 10th, 2025.

Shepherd Callahan is everywhere Wren Krause looks. He’s the owner of the bike shop next to her family’s bakery that steals her parking spot, asks questions about their pies, and is brooding all the time. He’s even a member of the exclusive romance book club that Wren’s been trying to get into for ages, and the ladies there love him and are pushing for her to. Too bad. Wren has plenty of reasons why she hates him even though he does read romance. When she learns his secrets, her heart softens a bit for the subject of her annoyance, and he’s sweeter and more protective than she thought. Wren is snarky and sour, not sweet and shy. She doesn’t open up to people even though spending time with him makes her want to. Will Wren decide to take a chance on the man next door, or stick with the idea that her and happily ever afters don’t mix?

I love this book. You have Wren Krause, a sassy, talented, clever, reserved, and beautiful young woman that makes fantastic pies and is protective of her loved ones. You have Shepherd Callahan, a strong, considerate, kind, charming, and handsome young man that likes working in his bike shop and riling Wren up. The interactions between the main characters were swoony, electric, and sweet. I loved seeing familiar faces from the previous book in this series, and August was such a sweetheart. The old ladies made me laugh, and the pies sounded delicious. The struggles that the main characters faced were relatable and I wanted to give them hugs as I cheered them on. Overall, if you like pies, bikes, cute kids, scheming old ladies, and sweet enemies-to-lovers romance with low spice, then I would highly recommend this book.

So, I finished One Small Spark by Genny Carrick and then a few days later I had to read the last few chapters again. It was so good. From the small-town vibes to Wren’s pies to Shepherd’s tattoos to the book club ladies to the romance, I adored everything about this book.

The story focuses on Wren and Shepherd. Wren thinks they are enemies while Shepherd just wants to kiss her. When the ladies in the romance book club they both belong to start to matchmake them, Wren starts to question why she see Shepherd as her enemy. The story that follows is full of funny moments, tender moments, and swoony moments.

I adored how Wren and Shepherd’s relationship slowly changed and developed into something real and true. It was so fun to watch Wren wrestle with her feelings and question her past beliefs. Shepherd was a dream. I don’t want to give too much away so you need to read this book to sees how good he is.

Carrick did a wonderful job of balancing a sweet and fun romance with some harder topics of anxiety and feelings of abandonment. The story never felt weighed down by these topics. I loved how she managed to keep the book light and happy while not shying away from real life.

One Small Spark is the first book in Genny Carrick’s Love in Sunshine series that I have read, and it will definitely not be the last. I definitely need to catch up because this is book 4 and I need to see how the other couples got together.

I adored this book, and I will probably be doing a full reread again soon. It has landed itself on my list of comfort books to reread.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Shepherd has become Wren’s nemesis and he’s not sure why. Determined to change her opinion, he does everything from joining the local romance book club to regularly buying pies from her shop even if he hates the flavor.

One Small Spark is the fourth book in the Love in Sunshine. This fade to black romance can be read as a stand-alone.

To me, this one is more of an opposites attract situation than enemies to lovers. Wren dislikes Shepherd but it’s more of an annoyance than hatred. There is never any animosity on Shephard’s end. He’s all “heart eyes” from the very beginning. Wren is very much an “indoor cat” (relatable) but she’s more than willing to push herself into more extroverted places to be around her loved ones. A lot of her dislike for Shephard comes across as a misunderstanding because it really doesn’t take Wren long to see that he’s not the man she built up in her head. I love the text threads with the book club ladies. They are such a fun group of gals and they really turned out to be Shephard’s greatest ally.

I have adored the whole Love in Sunshine series. I hope we’re getting at least one more book but I will happily read whatever Genny Carrick has next for her readers.

You know how when you read a book and a certain side character just speaks to you, and you must wait forever for them to become the featured MC… that was me for the FMC in this book!

Wren Krause is as snarky in this book as I hoped she would be!  She wears her heart on her shirt front…the graphic tees that she buys personify a lot of her thoughts!  This sassy pie baker extraordinaire has finally secured an invite to the premiere book club of Sunshine and the only thing raining on that parade is that Callahan is there.  And maybe the fact that the old ladies are not so subtly pushing her towards him!  Regardless of why, her resistance can only stand for so long right!?  Also, longing to expand her horizons imperative to her survival in the small town!

Shepherd Callahan may have a sarcastic retort for everything Wren throws at him, but his heart is pure gold!  The man wants so much for the town and the people he cares about (even if they don’t recognize it)!  He truly is the best man, and you can’t help cheering for him every step of the way!  If Wren’s shirts tell her story, his tattoos tell his… boy do they ever!  Biking is his passion, but books and baking are side hobbies that nobody would have seen coming!

The minor moments in this book are the ones that get me, and I can’t wait for others to discover them!  This story also has plenty of glimpses of the former MCs and a nod at who I hope is to come!  At the heart of this story is finding the one who meets you where you are at and challenges you to be even better than you ever thought you would be!  So, if you need the reminder, put it all out there because when that right person comes along, you will need to be ready!  This trip to Oregon was just as fun as the previous ones, bravo Genny!

First off, huge thank you to Genny Carrick for an early copy of the book!! My opinions are 💯 my own.

Wren bakes pies at her family’s bakery. Shepherd left his family’s lodge hotel to start a bike repair shop next door to Wren’s bakery. There was initial attraction, but Wren learned some things about Shepherd that totally turned her off.

Even if he was crazy hot.

Then they meet at a Romance Book Club, reading a book about Enemies to Lovers, and…..well, it is a RomCom.

I loved how FUNNY this book was. The side characters were genuinely hysterical, and Wren was so snarky. I want every one of her tee shirts.

I’m also a huge fan of dual POV- the one sided pining was delicious.

The author’s note does mention a fade to black scene, which truly was fade to black (no descriptive lead up), but The Event was still mentioned a few times, just in case you missed that it happened, and that was a little distracting. There are some descriptive kisses- those were also tastefully done. (There is one same-sex couple as well, in the side characters. They were lovely, but some readers like to know.)

Overall, I loved this book. I was reading on a silent train and had to muffle my laughter!

This book is absolutely amazing—it delivered on so many fronts! I adored all the characters, and Shepard and Wren were the sweetest couple. Shepard completely won my heart; he’s adorable, caring, and such a genuine sweetheart. I also really appreciated how his social anxiety was portrayed—you can feel his awkwardness, but also his kindness shining through. The author did a wonderful job showing how challenging and debilitating it can be.

Wren was such a fun character, too. I loved her snarky banter with Shepard, but underneath it all she’s a genuinely kind person. Her growth throughout the story—especially as she learned from her misunderstandings and opened up more—was so satisfying to watch.

The chemistry between Shepard and Wren was incredible. Their first kiss (and every kiss after) had me absolutely swooning. Add in the small-town charm, and this book just gave me all the warm, fuzzy feelings.

Overall, this was such a sweet, heartfelt read. I loved it, and if you’re looking for something that will make you smile and swoon, definitely check it out!

ARC Review - One Small Spark by Genny Carrick

This has been one of my most anticipated reads of the year, and Genny delivered, y’all! 🧡🫠🤩🫶🏻

Their love story gives all the tension, all the feels (gross😉), and so. much. yearning (I see you, Callahan). They are in a one-sided feud based on misconceptions and miscommunication. Wren hates him, he definitely doesn’t hate her, and this story is all about opening your heart, communicating, and letting people in.

Wren’s snark (internal and external😏) & Shepherd’s pining (internal and external😍) are just 🤌🏻. The cognitive dissonance Wren experiences is really interesting and keeps you hooked as she breaks down her perception of Shepherd.

I don’t want to give too much away! Just read this book‼️❣️‼️ You won’t regret it!!!

CW: This is a closed-door, FTB romcom with only kissing on the page and mild language. Parental abandonment and anxiety are discussed.

Thank you, Genny, for the ARC! All thoughts are my own.🫶🏻

Oh my goodness, I absolutely adored One Small Spark! From the very first page, Wren and Shepherd’s dynamic had me hooked. Wren—grumpy, quirky, and rocking her sassy t-shirts—was such a delight. And Shepherd? A broody, tattooed cinnamon roll of a man who reads romance novels, bakes bread, and quietly pines for the woman who insists he’s her nemesis. Perfection.

The banter between these two was electric, and the pining? Off the charts. Watching Wren slowly lower her guard and realize that Shepherd wasn’t her enemy but actually the safest place for her heart… swoon. And let’s just say, that first kiss? Pure magic.

Some of my favorite parts:
💜 The meddling romance book club (these ladies deserve their own novella!)
💜 Shepherd’s tattoos + their meanings (be still, my heart)
💜 Wren’s first visit to Shepherd’s cabin (all the cozy feels)
💜 The fact that Shepherd never pushed—he just quietly, steadily loved her until she was ready

This story had everything I love in a small-town romcom: witty banter, meddling neighbors, a protective MMC, and a romance that felt both hilarious and deeply heartfelt. Honestly? I grinned through the entire book.

If you’re craving an enemies-to-lovers that’s more sass than angst, with a hero who’s all green flags and a heroine who finds the courage to open her heart—this one’s for you.

I've loved all of the other books in this series, but this one fell a bit flat for me. It was still a nice escape.

What I loved:
✔️meddling old ladies in an exclusive romance book club.
✔️seeing characters from the other books in the series. I love that about overlapping books set in the same small town.
✔️a visit to a hot spring. It made me want to run away to Lava Hot Springs.
✔️PIE

Minor quibbles:
✔️pet names
✔️needed more relationship development

"Isn't it interesting how we'll accept any number of rude or indifferent behaviors from the male love interest, but when it's the woman, she has to be sweet and likable all the time? I don't know about you all, but I am not as saccharine as we expect a romance book heroine to be."

I received an advanced copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are mine.

Wren & Shepherd

Originally, Wren and Shepherd were attracted to each other, but Wren overheard something that Shepherd said about her that caused her to despise him. So, while Shepherd is still trying to get Wren to like him, she thinks he is just trying to annoy her.

Things come to a head when Wren finally receives a much-awaited invitation to the romance book club. When she gets there, she sees that Shepherd is already in attendance, and it is another thing to make her upset. The members of the book club are working - not so subtly - to get Wren and Shepherd together.

Wren finally realizes the truth about Shepherd’s feelings toward her, but she still fights against her own feelings for him. Enjoy their banter - sparks do fly!

All the pining!

SUCH a wonderful book - but truly all of Genny’s books are.

Wren is a snarky black-cat FMC who is loved from a far by her next door business neighbor Shepherd. Through some previous misunderstandings, she thinks he hates her and responds in kind — but what happens when their sparring becomes the spark that shows her what it could be?

SO many sweet wonderful elements in this book - the tattoo, the rolling ladder bookshelf, the personal journeys of both FMC/MMC. It’s a wonderful lovely story of realizing things aren’t what they seem and the right person will love you for exactly who you are. The banter + snark are off the charts in the best way and I promise you’ll fall in love with Wren and Shepherd!

I love this series!

Though I’m usually not a big fan of the whole enemies-to-lovers brouhaha, this enmity was not only very much one-sided, but Shepherd hid his Olympic-level pining behind plenty of top-notch banter, giving as good as he got, but never in a mean or demeaning way.

I loved how Wren discovered that she may have jumped to a very misguided conclusion or two and might have things gotten seriously wrong. So when she finally decided to let Shepherd peek behind those carefully constructed defenses? Le swoon!

Bonus points for the super-subtle (ha!) meddling of the Romance Book Club ladies!

More, please?

You can’t help but fall in love with Wren and Shepherd Callahan. In fact, I grew to love them and their connection so much that when our grandson and his girlfriend visited us last weekend, I kept comparing them to Wren and Shepherd, like they were real people. Well, they are, aren’t they?
Some high points for me – the ladies in the Book Club, Wren’s favorite bakery customer, Wren’s nephew, August, everything about Shepherd, especially his tattoo of the bird, and the interactions between the main characters. This is the third book in the series I have read, and I plan to read the one I missed as soon as I can.

10 out of 10, all the stars, highly recommend. Genny does it again with this (one-sided) enemies-to-lovers full of banter and yearning.

Wren is feisty and bold and loyal. She is unapologetically herself and loves her people fiercely, and maybe has some trust and self-worth issues that are so relatable (I only wish I had her boldness to go along the issues). Shepherd is broody and solid and gentle. He reads romance, and boy oh boy does he yearn like a champ. The push and pull of their chemistry and banter is delectable. And despite Wren's resistance, they have this fantastic ability to get to each other's core with both acceptance and challenge, consistently defending and encouraging one another without hesitation.

I also couldn't get enough of the book club ladies (and their group chat). They were hilariously bad and incredibly good at meddling in Wren and Shepherd's relationship. And I obviously loved getting little moments with beloved characters from past novels, and am so looking forward to spending more time in Sunshine (hopefully).

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, if Genny writes it, I'll read it. She simply never disappoints. Thank you so much for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

This is Wren and Shepherds story. Wren is prickly and resistant to love she has some grievances holding her back from admitting her true feelings.
Shepherd is confident in his own feelings. He's steady and patient throughout, waiting for Wren to admit her feelings.
I loved these two letting their walls down for each other.

My favourite moments:

•The Bookclub ladies
•The bookshelf and ladder
•Jane Austen movie night
•He reads to her 🫠
•The hot springs
•"son of a bus" is now my favourite saying 🤣

As expected from Genny Carrick: this was such a heart-warming read! I loved it a lot ♥
One Small Spark is all about the quiet, everyday moments that turn into something unforgettable. The writing has that perfect mix of charm and emotional pull. You’re instantly rooting for Wren and Shepherd! The spark between them feels organic, like it could happen in real life, and that made the romance so much more powerful. Sweet, hopeful, and beautifully written—this is the kind of story that lingers with you.

I really enjoyed this fun, small town romcom. This is a fantastic enemies to lover’s story. Wren has been angry with Shepard for so many years, were her reasons valid? I loved the book club ladies and their meddling ways to get Wren and Shepard together, so witty and humorous. The built-up chemistry between them was great when they finally let go. Shepard is so swoony and sweet, such a great character. I enjoyed this swoony story from start to finish, great read!

I loved this enemies-to-lovers rom-com! Although it's really one-sided due to a huge misunderstanding, of course. Wren is all snark & sass but it really hides a tender heart that is afraid to love. Shepherd gives as good as he gets from Wren, but in reality, he loves the snark & sassiness she directs his way. When they finally fall, it is epic! I am totally loving this series!
