“Can you imagine bringing a baby all the way to London? Why not leave it in the country with a nursemaid like a sensible gentleman?’ [T]he way the woman called little Lord Kendall an it grated on [Livy’s] nerves. In one sentence, she’d lowered the child to nothing more than a mere possession, like a statue or a piece of china.”
The coach rattled to a stop and a footman from the inn opened the door, hand outstretched. She didn’t even look at it as she let herself down. Why did men think a woman could not exit places on their own? Arrogant creatures.
Uncle Percy shook his head. “Poor girl. No one should have to go through such a disgrace.” Eddie planted his hands on his hips. “Poor girl? She tried to trap me.” “She must have had a good reason. No doubt she needed the stability a marriage might give her.” While Eddie had thought much the same thing, it sounded accusatory coming out of his uncle’s mouth. “That is not a good reason to tie me to her for life. What about me? I was the one who was hurt in all of this.” Uncle Percy’s large hand settled on his shoulder. “I am not dismissing your position, Eddie. Nor am I condoning what she did. You must understand that this world is not kind to women. While you have walked away with no repercussions thanks to your engagement, she will be ruined forever.”I understand his point about her desperation, but the only reason Eddie will have “no repercussions” is because of Livy. And how does that make her the victim? At the end of the day, she set out to ruin another man to force him into marriage. Everyone has an excuse. That doesn’t make it valid or worthy of this much sympathy, certainly not a “good reason.”
“You are lucky I came along, young man. Next time there might not be someone there to save you.” She glared up at him. He’d been the one in need of saving. The corner of his lips twitched, amusement dancing in his eyes. She relaxed and matched his pace. He wasn’t berating her. He was making certain her identity stayed a secret from their audience.
