Thank you to the author for sending me a paperback copy of the book. Opinions are my own.
The Lies We Loved book took me through ALL the most intense human emotions! And if that's the kind of reading experience you look for in a romance, you'll want this one on your TBR for sure!
In The Lies We Loved by Belle S. Owens you will find: - The pregnancy trope - Lies, deceits, betrayals...the full package! - a HARD EARNED resolution - a sort of love triangle
It follows Paige and Elliot. She is an author, and he is the actor starring in the adaptation of one of her books. The two fall madly in love, but on the night Paige finds out she's pregnant, Elliot confessed that he's fallen in love with someone else. Heartbroken, Paige struggles to face her new reality while growing a new life, becoming easy prey to the attentions and comfort offered by her charming doctor. Meanwhile, Elliot realizes that a chain of toxic manipulation by those closest to him has pushed him to make the biggest mistake of his life. Question is... can he fix it?
This isn't your typical romance with a meet cute and a neat happy ending (though the ending is realistically happy). This is a book that challenges its readers, with characters that are FLAWED. To root for them is to push aside first impressions and your immediate response to their actions to dig deeper into their motives and circumstances. I screamed at these characters A LOT but honestly couldn't stop flipping through the pages!
What I loved most was the pregnancy aspect. The love both Elliot and Paige feel for their unborn baby girl is its own journey, and even though they have a lot of stuff to work through, it's this love that ultimately sets the stage for their second chance. I was very satisfied with the resolution of their story!
The Lies We Loved is a Romance that I would describe as different from many I have read before. This is a standalone book perfect for readers that like messy romances full of emotional turmoil and fans of authors like Coleen Hoover, Davney Perry and T.L. Swan.
The story follows Paige and Elliot. She is an author and he an actor, who met on the set of her debut novel’s film and fell in love. When Paige discovers she’s pregnant, Elliot surprises her with shocking news of his own: he’s fallen for someone else. Distraught and with a baby on the way, Paige breaks off their relationship, and as she struggles to pick up the pieces, there’s a charming doctor who offers her comfort. Meanwhile, Elliot realizes the colossal mistake he’s made, and that what he had with Paige was real, unlike the nothing he’s actually shared with this other person. But drowning in guilt as he is, he doesn’t see or question the lies and manipulation by his so-called best friend and makes a series of mistakes. When the truth finally comes out, will Paige be able to forgive Elliot?
This book does not follow a neat, clear path. The romance is messy, in the way that real life often is. There were moments I was angry at the characters. First at Elliot, because how could I not side with Paige? But then I realized how manipulative Shaun is, and Elliot is completely unaware of the lies and mental brainwashing his friend does to him! It’s like dark sorcery. So I found myself wanting to shake Elliot, to pull him out of the dark hole he’s fallen into and see the light. But even so, it’s easy to empathize with Paige, who is hurt and pregnant. It wasn’t an easy situation to untangle, but I did enjoy the realistic resolution, which shows that they’re both on a path to healing and reaching a point where they can be together again.
Here are the tropes! Pregnancy Trope Emotional Rollecoaster Love Triangle (sort of)

The Lies We Loved is a tormented, twisty novel that leaves you questioning whether a single person in Paige's life is actually sane and/or sensible (including Paige herself). On the night Paige plans to tell Elliot she is pregnant, he announces that he's fallen in love with a co-worker. He utterly blindsides Paige, who just can't understand how she didn't see it coming. It turns out that there was never a relationship with the coworker - Elliot's supposed best friend Shaun has sat dripping poison into his ear about how Paige is more successful than him and she won't want him anymore, and that this Heather is clearly into him. Instead of Elliot thinking it through logically, or talking it through with anyone other than Shaun, he jumps with both feet into the "you absolute dick" square on the Game of Life board. And from that point on, there is very little any character says or does that can be classed as rational - particularly in the case of Elliot.
As the "wronged" woman, and with the book being written from her POV, you expect to feel a lot of empathy for Paige, but she becomes so ridiculous at points that you just want to throttle her! I can understand that hormones are messing with her brain, and on top of having her heart ripped out, that means she's not necessarily able to rely on her sense of equilibrium, but honestly... developing feelings that you think could be love for your (totally unprofessional at best, thoroughly creepy at worst) OB/GYN because he shows you kindness is a sure sign that your behaviour is not rational, and that you should be talking to someone - a professional preferably (particularly with the suicidal ideation) - but even your Mum, who seems to be the closest thing to a sensible person you have in your life.
Elliot is such a conundrum. Why is he so led by Shaun? Why does he blindly believe everything that man says? And why is Shaun so rabidly anti-Paige? If Elliot stopped for one second to consider how successful his relationship with Paige has been until now, would he really nerf their life together on such a whim? There's potential for a really juicy backstory here, which I think once fleshed out will totally enhance the rest of the novel. Elliot's mother also confuses me - she is portrayed as a fierce Italian woman, for whom family is everything - yet she just blindly accepts Elliot's (Shaun's!) version of events when Paige has been a daughter to her for the past three years? She wouldnt stay quiet and shun Paige, especially as Elliot's behaviour gets more erratic - she'd be constantly trying to get to the bottom of it all.
As it stands, the threads are there for a really gripping story but it's all a bit vague at the moment. Fill in more of Shaun's backstory and we at least get some understanding of why exactly Elliot falls for his games. A steadier pacing of the plot with the OB/GYN may provide more of an understanding as to why Paige develops feelings for him - at the moment it just feels like a very odd crush on a man who shows her kindness which has been overblown into more because of her hormonal brain. More fleshing out of this plot point is needed for it to make as much sense to the reader as it probably does to the author. With some rewriting and some strong editing, this book has the potential to do well, but at the moment, in my opinion, it is falling a little short.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to review this book!
wow this book is demolished in one sitting just incredible. you know you have a good book when you catch the feels anger, remorse forgiveness confusion. Belle promised ruin and she succeeded i felt destroyed at times, I felt at times yelling at the characters for the absurdity of what they were falling for yet I had the internal battle going I can also see how this happened. then she promised manipulation and I felt as though I was watching one of those who's done it movies constantly guessing where it's coming from... maybe I was being manipulated??? just it's a great read yes it had a pregnancy trope but it fits and if you have had kids you can understand the thought processes in Paige's mind.
What she promised, She gave us! I read this book so fast, i could not put it down. It had me running through all of the emotions. I was angry yelling at the characters asking them how they could be so naive to fall for some of these things, but at the same time it made me look at myself and some of the things I have fallen for that I now cans see were absolutely crazy to fall for in the first place. I loved this book, I loved the characters, everything about it. It was written amazingly well, and I cannot wait to see more books from her! If you need a book to take you on an emotional rollercoaster then this is the book for you. It truly is a magnificent read!
Wow!! What a fun read. It started a bit slow and I wish there was a bit more character development as I didn’t realllly feel attached to them until midway through. Otherwise, I absolutely loved this story and read it so fast. I could still throat punch Elliot (and shaun and Liam tbh….) but I’m glad they figured it out in the end. Paige is strong, and independent and the story truly goes through so many ups and downs sharing Paige’s inner dialogue which is just so strong. Great read, I will be recommending this to everyone I know! Book comes out Dec 16 🩵🩵✨✨

This book will take you through all of the emotions!! I loved Paige and her inner dialogue she is a strong character to deal with everything she was dealt with pregnant. Elliot oh Elliot I wanted to throttle him the first 80% of the book like please don't believe these people 😫 all in all such an angsty book that was read in one day!!!
Absolutely loved this book!! I read it in only a couple of days because I had to know how it ended, so every second I got I was reading it, it had a great storyline, was emotional and was well written, I can’t wait for more of Belle’s books to come out!
The Lies We Loved completely wrecked me...and I mean that in the best way. This story is sad, emotional, and so painfully real that I felt every single decision right alongside Paige. She has been betrayed in the worst way and at the worst time in her life!
From the very beginning, my heart broke for her. Planning to share life-changing news, only to have everything shattered in an instant? Devastating. What I loved most is that this book doesn’t shy away from the consequences of betrayal. Elliot’s spiral, the tangled web of lies, and the outside manipulation all added layers that made the story feel raw and unpredictable.
And then there’s the emotional tension between holding onto what was, questioning what could be, and learning when to finally choose yourself. The romance isn’t easy or clean, and that’s exactly why it works. I kept thinking about what would be the outcome, she had so much on her plate but still pushed thru!
This book is intense, heartbreaking, and impossible to put down. I was fully invested until the very last page.
