A rare case of it's not you it's me. I think most people will love this one. I WANTED to love this one. The MMC is very swoon worthy, like others have said. I just....couldn't.
The circumstances leading to their breakup were bad, and since everyone likes to mark their reviews as spoilers without leaving helpful (or any) spoilers, resulting in my curiosity making me suffer through this one, allow me the honor:
These two are childhood sweethearts, soul mates, they're each other's One True Loves, everyone in their town knows they'll end up together, blah blah blah. She's 2 years younger than him so he goes off to medical school alone and after one drunken night, wakes up naked next to another woman.
And instead of asking her questions or going to the FMC or doing anything at all about it, he kept it to himself and agonizes over it for weeks, until the woman comes to tell him she's pregnant.
SO HE IMMEDIATELY MARRIES HER. Like immediately, no questions asked.
And the FMC, who still thinks nothing is wrong and that her boyfriend is planning to marry her and start their dream life, gets told over the phone the next time she calls him that he's married. Just like that, no hello, must blurting it out.
And when the woman doesn't want him to mention the pregnancy to his family and then suddenly has a miscarriage, he thinks nothing of it. Asked no questions before marrying her, asked no questions when she didn't want it announced, asked no questions when she secretly had a miscarriage.
Mind you, this guy is in medical school....
And for 5 years he stays married to her, happily fckin her even though he wants to be with the FMC, until he hears the OW laughing with her friends about how she not only baby trapped him with a fake pregnancy, but also drugged his drink that night he was out with his friends and he hadn't actually slept with her.
And then even 5 years after the divorce (so 10 years later in total now), he still doesn't want to face the FMC with the truth. He has to be coaxed into doing it by everyone around him.
Anyway, I just wanted more from him. He said like 20 times some variation of how he was going to go get his woman and then the tiniest thing would set him back or stop him completely. He didn't fight for her until the end and even then he had to be literally told what to do by his sister and her husband whose biggest regret was not going after the sister after their own argument years earlier.
This guy is just willing to let everything happen TO him without taking charge of his own actions or even asking basic questions like, "is the baby mine?" Or "can I come to a doctor appointment with you?" before blowing up his entire life and marrying a stranger. Smh
And don't get me started on the the reviewers saying the FMC should have gone after HIM and everything would have been solved. Girl what? I know you're not saying that someone who had their significant other suddenly marry someone else during a long distance relationship should be the one who fixes That.
But while I'm talking about the FMC, it's one of my biggest pet peeves in romances when authors allow the FMC to move on after the heartbreak of her life...but only with an asshole. She can't ever be happy with someone who isn't the MMC and she can't find ANYONE that is halfway decent in 10 whole years or else the entire genre would implode or something.
It's easier to accept the very dubious cheating that takes place in this book (not quite physical, but at the very least, emotional cheating) because the OM is an asshole. It's easier to accept her split second decision to drop him for the MMC because he's an asshole. And she can also give up her entire life for the MMC once again because the life she has in [insert any other city] wasn't as fulfilling as what the MMC offers her now that he's decided he wants her after 10 years. 🙄🙄🙄
But hey, he built himself her dream house down to the last fixture she wanted even though he never planned to go after her...and now that she's forgiven him after one conversation where she also didn't ask for proof of his far-fetched explanation, it can be hers too, so there's that.
Short epilogue that shows nothing useful of their future. I despise that.
