Rate this book
From Strange New Worlds season 4 writer Robbie Thompson (The Sin Bin, Marvel’s Silk) and Star Trek knockout artist Travis Mercer (Cyborg, Teen Titans) comes a Lovecraftian horror the likes of which the crew of the Enterprise has never seen before! After plodding through uneventful mission after uneventful mission, Christine Chapel is itching for a real adventure. So, when an opportunity to reunite with her old scientist friend Jinare for research on the planet Poilant crops up, Chapel is excited to finally do what Starfleet does explore strange new worlds. However, when the Enterprise arrives in Poilant’s space, the crew cannot get into contact with Jinare or any of her researchers. Chapel, Una, Spock, La’An, and Scotty beam down, and they are greeted by…nothing…no one…and no signs of what caused their disappearance, only a robot named D6 who urges them to descend into the planet’s depths in search of his friends. But there’s more than scientists lurking in the watery abyss. Ancient life-forms and behemoths await—and they might mean more adventure than even Chapel can handle.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – The Seeds of Salvation #1

“What horrors await beneath the ice?” You’ll be asking that long after the final panel.

Robbie Thompson and Travis Mercer deliver a chilling, atmospheric kickoff to this five-issue mini-series that boldly goes where Trek rarely dares: deep into Lovecraftian horror. With The Seeds of Salvation, the crew of the Enterprise isn’t just exploring strange new worlds—they’re plunging into the abyss of ancient terror.

Christine Chapel takes center stage, restless and ready for something more than routine missions. Her reunion with scientist friend Jinare on the icy planet Poilant quickly spirals into a mystery when the research team vanishes without a trace. The landing party—Chapel, Una, Spock, La’An, and Scotty—encounters only silence… and a lone robot named D6, who beckons them into the planet’s depths.

What follows is a masterclass in tension-building. Mercer’s art evokes the claustrophobia of underwater descent and the grandeur of alien ruins, while Thompson’s writing balances character introspection with creeping dread. The pacing is deliberate, teasing the horrors to come, and the final page promises that issue #2 will dive even deeper into the unknown.

This isn’t just Trek—it’s Trek with tentacles. A perfect blend of sci-fi and horror, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – The Seeds of Salvation #1 is an epic start that respects canon while daring to twist it. Whether you’re a fan of Pike’s crew or just craving eldritch vibes in space, this issue delivers.

Happy reading 🚀🪐📚

This issue was all set up, and no pay off, which is fine for a #1, but I was surprised at how little actually happened. I guess it's supposed to turn into a "Lovecraftian horror story" which doesn't really interest me at all, but I like the characters enough that I'll give it a shot. But again, just what Star Trek doesn't need... another horror story.

The art is decent and nothing overly memorable. Most of the characters don't really look like themselves, but the dialogue will clue you in.

We'll see there this one goes, but right now it looks like it'll be Chapel vs. a giant octopus, and I can't say that's the most exciting idea I've heard recently.
