In the subgenre of space horror, Paul W. S. Anderson's 1997 film "Event Horizon" has taken on somewhat of a cult classic status. I remember seeing this film in the theater, and I was, perhaps, the only voice of dissent in my group of friends. I wasn't that impressed, for reasons that I couldn't quite articulate, although it may have had something to do with the fact that it seemed a bit too "Hellraiser"-ish.

A scene that was originally cut from the theatrical release, probably for obvious reasons

I've since re-watched it and find it to be, at the very least, an entertaining and creepy space horror film, and I can appreciate more of the psychological horror aspect of the film that I didn't appreciate then. It is, essentially, "The Haunting of Hill House" on a spaceship, with a lot more gore.

Christian Ward (along with artist Tristan Jones) has, almost 30 years later, penned a sequel that, I can only imagine, nobody except die-hard fans really wanted.

In point of fact, this is a prequel, explaining the events that led to the disappearance in deep space of the spaceship Event Horizon, which was later discovered by Laurence Fishburne and Sam Neill, and which led to both men's male-pattern baldness. (That's purely speculation.)

Apparently the experimental drive system transported the ship to a remote corner of Hell, ruled by a demonic creature that looks like Groot if Groot were a member of Gwar.

This graphic novel series is, at the very least, readable. It's basically a rehash of the movie, so if you really liked the movie, you will probably enjoy this.

This is a very solid start to the prequel series, an effective setup of the story that captures the tone and style of the film, artistically and thematically.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Event Horizon: Dark Descent #1

Written by Christian Ward | Art by Tristan Jones

“Abandon all hope…” has never felt so deliciously literal.

Christian Ward and Tristan Jones kick off this official prequel with a blood-slick bang, plunging us into the doomed belly of the Event Horizon before it became legend. If you’re a fan of cosmic horror, demonic lore, and the kind of psychological unraveling that leaves claw marks on your soul, this debut issue delivers.

What Works

• Atmosphere: Ward’s writing drips with dread, layering existential terror over the cold mechanics of space travel. The descent into hell isn’t just metaphorical—it’s grotesquely real.
• Artistry: Jones’ visuals are a masterclass in horror illustration. Think Aliens meets Hellraiser, with a dash of Dead Space—all rendered in jagged, visceral detail.
• Lore Expansion: By introducing Paimon, the eyeless King of Hell, and fleshing out Captain Kilpack’s crew, the series deepens the mythos without over-explaining. It respects the film’s ambiguity while adding fresh nightmares.

Minor Gripes

• The pacing leans heavy on setup, which makes sense for a miniseries premiere, but some readers might crave more immediate carnage.
• Dialogue occasionally veers into exposition, though it’s forgivable given the scope of the world-building.

Final Thoughts

A strong, skin-crawling start that honors the cult-classic film while carving out its own infernal identity. If this issue is the gateway, I can’t wait to see what fresh horrors await beyond the gravity drive.

4 out of 5 stars.
Hell is just getting warmed up.

Happy reading 🚀💀📚

Beginnings

If you’ve seen the movie or even just caught wind of its premise, you can already grasp the direction in which the story will unfold.

The narrative opens with a thorough introduction to each crew member slated for the maiden voyage of the Event Horizon, allowing us to connect with their personalities and backgrounds. We also get a glimpse into the life of Dr. Weir, revealing the emotional turmoil he experiences just prior to the launch—an incident that adds a layer of depth to his character and hints at the haunting elements to come. The artwork throughout the film is striking, immersing viewers in the eerie beauty of space travel, while the dialogue hits the expected notes, filled with both excitement and tension.

Despite knowing the dark fate that awaits them, the initial scenes are infused with a palpable sense of hope and anticipation for the crew, making their journey feel all the more poignant. As the story progresses, it would be interesting to delve deeper into each character's motivations and backgrounds before they are sent off on this perilous mission. This foundation sets the stage for the unfolding drama, leaving viewers eager to see how their fates intertwine as they venture into the unknown.

I have to preface this review by saying I LOVE "Event Horizon." Some people might (wrongly) dismiss the interstellar-horror movie as cheesy (it isn't) or outdated (nope!) but I appreciate it for exactly what it is: "Hellraiser" in space (which is AWESOME). So I'm coming to this prequel comic miniseries from a little bit of a different angle than some people. Is it necessary to fill in the backstory of Dr. Weir, his gravity drive, and the fateful maiden voyage of the Event Horizon? Probably not, but I'm willing to be openminded. This first issue is mainly setup, introducing the ship's crew and their various regrets and secrets (which I'm sure won't show up to haunt them later on in the story). There are a few elements I'm a little wary of - writer Christian Ward's use of a seemingly demonic entity, artist Tristan Jones' character designs that don't quite resemble their real-life counterparts - but "Event Horizon: Dark Descent #1" hints at some forthcoming insanity so I'm on board.

This first issue ticked ALL of the woke/diversity checkboxes that exist under the sun.

Did we really need a prequel to Event Horizon? We just need the cut content from the movie restored.
What is this prequel comic gonna do in just 5 short issues, honestly?

The art style is... an acquired taste I guess, one that I haven't acquired yet.
Spoilers ahead:
How did nobody know the Nigerian guy has terminal cancer? Don't they have medical checkups before the mission?
How did nobody know the Australian guy has killed someone? Don't they do background checks of people for the mission?
How did they not figure out one of them ALREADY died? It's not like there are 50 people on board so you can't keep track of everyone.

I will read the other 4 issues once they come out because I love the movie, but yeah I don't think this is going to be good at all.

This is one of those comics that appeals deeply to me due to my love of the 1996 movie. Its a flawed and underrated sci fi horror which has only recently started to get the love and attention it deserves despite its troubled post production, another victim of studio interference. fingers are still crossed that a fully uncut edit is discovered somewhere, hopefully not in a Transylvanian salt mine

(no joke, some unused footage of this movie was discovered in a salt mine in Transylvania)

This comic book details the events of briefly seen of the first crew in the movie which was heavily edited so only snippets of what happened to them exist and its not fully explained in the movie so my excitement for this was at a high. First issues as hard to review as they are the intro/hook to the bigger story and this one ended with me needing more.

I really loved this. It captures the creeping dread of Event Horizon while expanding on the ship’s legacy in a way that feels true to the film. The atmosphere is thick — shadows, whispers, and that constant sense that something terrible is just around the corner. The tension builds steadily, and when the horror hits, it lands.

For me, this was exactly what I wanted: a dark, unsettling dive back into one of sci-fi horror’s most haunting corners.

Hook, line, and sinker. I’m sold. This was pretty sweet. I love all these characters and how they are all going to play a role in this. I’m super excited someone picked up this cult classic and making their own twist to it.
Carry on……

Very good.

I have waited with bated breath for a sequel to the cult-classic to come out. It never did come out but we got the next best thing: A graphic novel. The story is good. Some creepy moments. Art is beautiful as well. I liked it a lot.

Not crazy about the art style, but it fits the existential dread of the source material. Ward sets good template with a diverse group of characters. Let's see how they deal with the hell awaiting them...

I enjoyed the movie immensely, so I was quite pleased when this comic showed up. Unfortunately, I can already see some cracks in the plot, and the artwork is not great. I hope the series gets better.

Finally!

I agree with others when I say this has been long awaited. This movie is one of my top 10 space horrors but since there was no other movies we were left wanting more. Thank goodness for comic books.

I loved Event Horizon (the movie) from the moment I watched it at a far too young age haha. This comic let us know about this world and the horible things that happened to the first crew of the Event Horizon.

Fantastic!

Fantastic! I loved the mystery and what is left to the imagination in the Event Horizon movie. Saying that I've always wanted more, a sneak peek at events which were brought up but never explained in depth. That depth starts here.

A New Take On A Cult Classic

I enjoyed issue 1. It added to the lore of the series without deviating too far from what was great about the film. Looking forward to the next issue.

Like the idea of this, offering the back story of what happened to the Event Horizon before the movie. Has some potential, but want to see how this evolves.

The Event Horizon was a revolutionary spaceship designed for one mission: faster-than-light travel with a top secret and experimental gravity drive. I’ll keep this brief since this is only the first issue of a serial comic, running a lean 30 or so pages. Let me start with a confession: I am absolutely in love with the original Event Horizon movie. My parents took me to see it when I was just 8 years old, and my world was forever changed. The allure of horror, especially cosmic horror, has clung to me ever since. The gore, the pounding knocks in the walls, the slow unraveling of the crew’s sanity… it all struck a terrifying chord in my young mind.

Now, we finally have a prequel comic series that dares to tell the story of the Event Horizon’s original crew: the ones who vanished on her maiden voyage. In the film, we learned that they crossed into Hell itself and were consumed by visions, mutilations, and ritualistic carnage. All we got was a brief, nightmarish glimpse through a grainy video diary of their violent, chaotic descent. This comic promises to show us the full story.

At least eventually. This first issue spends its time setting the stage, introducing our characters, and even showing Dr. Weir (Sam Neill’s character from the film). It builds tension beautifully, but ends right as the Gravity Drive is activated leaving us dangling, knowing exactly what kind of madness is about to be unleashed. Dark Descent #2 drops in October, and I’m already salivating for it. Since we’ll likely never see that elusive 130+ minute director’s cut of Event Horizon, this comic feels like the next best thing. For now, I wait patiently.
