Clara was never meant to be a mother, a goddess, or the glue that holds her weird but somewhat functional found family together—but here she is, doing all three with the grace of a tipsy flamingo in a minefield.
With the Sea Kingdom demanding her son, Luc, return to the Sea and begin training as their heir, war brews on all sides of Clara's crumbling sanctuary. Dave, injured but alive, finally awakens, claiming he wants peace. But when secrets unravel and old magic awakens, Clara discovers that Dave’s loyalty might not lie where she thought. Again.
As Clara juggles magical politics, a town that wants her gone, and Neve’s terrifying new powers, her reluctant alliance with the stoic and dangerously powerful stranger living on her land deepens into something she doesn’t have time to name.
Because something ancient is stirring beneath the waves.
Something monstrous enough to shake the heavens.
A threat larger than anything Clara has ever faced has awakened.
S.E. Babin has a passion for writing books with a paranormal twist. Whether it's romance or mystery, she loves taking the norm and turning it into the extraordinary. Her love of reading turned into a curious exploration to see whether or not she could write her own novel.
Beginning with random, terrible poetry and a slightly popular reimagining of Beowulf's Grendel in her high school English class, Sheryl spent way too much time in the library, killing any chance of her becoming a cheerleader or anything even remotely cool. Clara and Dave have joint custody of their son, but she’s having to fight still to keep the sea from taking him. One of her friends has some strange new powers that they’re not really sure how they work so she’s having to watch her, they’ve got a new person living on the property to help protect Clara, and Clara has decided she might want to get back into the dating game with this new person. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
As much as I’m enjoying Clara and Baba and Neve, the constant rotation of unreliable men who show they’re untrustworthy yet somehow become romantic interests only to prove they are untrustworthy has gotten old. Less of that, please. (And though I’m still sad Dave became an utter asshat, I’m kinda hoping ). Pretty much everything else in the story has been entertaining so if there is another book I’ll probably read it.
We have a (really difficult) confrontation with Hecate in here, some very funny scenes, some really intense scenes (like "reinstalling a heart and a spirit into what should have been a corpse"), Dave/Poseiden waffling (again), and new and really interesting characters. And, of course, perhaps the prelude to the end of the world (again).
The series is DEFINITELY heating up in intensity and I am looking forward to the next episode.
Wow! Ok first I read the cocktail in Hell series and then I started Clara’s series and OMG!!! I love the characters in this book!! Clara and Dave. Clara and violet. Lucifer. So great. So amazing. So wonderfully flawed yet brilliant!! I can’t wait for the next one. Read this book BUT read the co Lysol’s in Hell series first. Don’t worry once you start you won’t be able to stop!!
This book has it all and now I need more. I laughed out loud more than once reading this book. Even had my husband laughing when I read him a few excerpts. I can’t wait to see what happens next. Loved it
Loved this book as much as I did SE Babin’s previous work. The friendships that Clara has with Violet, Baba, Neve, and Artie are almost real life. You can always count on friends. Highly recommend!!
I can't say enough about how I crave the world that Babin has created with the interactions between the characters. You can feel the warmth between the friends with the humor bringing a smile to my face!
I am still not crazy about the MC and her “I can never forgive him!!!!” schtick. But …. having said that …. the cast of characters is appealing (and eclectic) and the ending was pretty darn cool.
In the course of 10 days, I’ve read all 8 of Violet’s books and 3 of Clara’s. Loving S.E. basin’s writing and need to see where this goes! Patiently waiting (okay, not so patiently waiting) for book 4!
The pantomine of riding a bike made me laugh out loud.
I thoroughly enjoyed the books. I appreciated the humor and wit of the characters. It was refreshing to learn about the characters and I enjoyed the world in which it occurred.
I'm not sure how I feel about Dave being the villain. It's taken such a turn since the bar. I appreciate the snippets of Violet and Lucifer. But, there's a sense of disconnect from the group.
