She was enraptured by the man they called Romeo the moment that he turned those butterscotch-colored eyes her way. What wasn’t to love about a big, burly, plaid-wearing lumberjack?
He was tall, gorgeous, and knew how to wield a chainsaw better than Leatherface. He could fell a tree in seconds, had thighs that were as thick as said trees, filled out a pair of Wranglers better than any cowboy ever, and didn’t care that she could operate heavy machinery better than him.
He was everything a girl like Mable could ask for.
The caveat? He was a convicted felon that’d just escaped from prison, faked his death, and ran from his home in Texas to the mountains of Montana.
At first, Mable didn’t know what kind of man he’d been before coming to her small, mountain town. He led Mable into a false sense of security, made her fall madly, deeply, and irrevocably in love with him, and then shocked her by sharing his darkest secret.
Now, she’s left reeling, thinking life couldn’t get more complicated.
Until she finds out her stepmother knows Romeo’s secret and plans to exploit him. To make matters worse, Romeo goes on the run to protect Mable from himself, and she realizes that she has a dark side, too. One that’ll stop at nothing, not even murder, to make sure that he can live free.
Lani Lynn Vale is married to the love of her life that she met in high school. She fell in love with him because he was wearing baseball pants. Ten years later they have three perfectly crazy children and a cat named Demon who likes to wake her up at ungodly times in the night. They live in the greatest state in the world, Texas. She writes contemporary and romantic suspense, and has a love for all things romance. You can find Lani in front of her computer writing away in her fictional characters world...that is until her husband and kids demand sustenance in the form of food and drink.
House of B.S +Lies is the first book in a new spin off series (Don't Date Him) and this one didn't hold back from the very beginning. Growing up in beautiful Montana, Mabel is familiar with her small town and she wouldn't trade it for anything. Well.. if you add in her stepmother and step sister, she would definitely re-consider. But trying to keep her head down and live her life is proving to be difficult day by day for Mable. When a new guy comes to town and she realizes that he has something that belongs to her, all bets are off.
Knowing that this is a new series by this author, I wanted to give this one a try. I loved the setting of the story and even though the hero's past was a bit vague still, I truly liked him. I found that more than a few instances were too convenient if I'm being honest and it's like everything had to be wrapped up quickly. I will say that I'm more than curious to see if a certain side character will get their own story and if that's the case, I'm definitely reading that one.
If you're looking for a quick sexy read with a lot of family drama, then this one's for you.
This is a super fun read! I love Romeo & Mable! She's been through & is going through some family dramas & Romeo knows how that goes. They're attracted to & intrigued by each other from the first meeting. Then they discover they have an unexpected connection, a friendship is born, and they discover different ways in which they're VERY compatible. 😁
I especially enjoyed the way the family drama unfolds. Apollo gets to help out & he's quite entertaining. Mable loves to cook and so I did spend some of this story fighting cravings to make & eat delicious food. Worth it, tho! 😄 And there's a biscuit recipe at the end. Anyway, Mable has such a sweet heart, even when there are dire circumstances. And Romeo would say he DOESN'T have one, but he does, and his protective nature is also on point. I love the way he stands behind Mable when she's standing up for herself while also standing beside her to help in those situations - and calling in Apollo for help.
New series and definitely new family drama lol. LLV brings it all with this new group of characters. Romeo gets a fresh new start thanks to his brother-in-law and has ended up in a small town in Montana working as a lumberjack. Only a handful of people know his secret and he plans to keep it that way. What he didn’t plan on is Mable. The heavy equipment operator working for his same company. He never thought love was in the cards with this new life, but he went and fell in love anyways. When his lie is threatened to be exposed, he runs to save her, but Mable is determined to take care of that problem herself along with a little help from her bestie and the step-sister she always hated. I’m loving this new series and cannot wait for more!
Love when we get introduced to a new series by LLV and a whole new cast of characters, well Apollo was the mastermind behind the breakout so he has a recurring role in this book. Romeo has his sister‘s husband, Apollo, to thank for getting him out of prison and setting up his life in Montana. He is settled in the small town in Montana when he finds an abandoned dog to keep him company. He keeps to himself, only going to work and meeting up with his fellow prison break guys once a month that is until Mabel quite literally runs into him. Mabel is going through some drama and her family also and Romeo wants to stand in front of her and protect her from all that drama. He is worried that she will find out why he is really in Montana and won’t want to be with him. Will someone find out before then and make waves for Romeo and Mabel?
Romeo Haynes has a second shot at a semi normal life. Semi normal for a man who escaped prison and is living a quiet life in Montana. He keeps to himself but when he meets Mabel Watts he finds his interest is peaked. She is all wrong for him but he sees a strength in her he finds enticing.
It started with a missing dog, loving to bake and horrible family members. Mabel is doing her best to get by. She finds herself attracted to Romeo but does he feel the same? Secrets have a way of destroying everything can they find a balance when all is revealed?
Loved. Another fabulous series by this author. Full of twists and I am definitely intrigued by the characters in this series. Can't wait for more.
5 stars for Romeo (Meo) and Mable's story! (Romeo is Dru's brother from the last series.)
Lani Lynn Vale does it AGAIN. And again, and again, and again. Writing books I can't get enough of.
Lani has written an amazing and relatable romance book that gave me all the feels and had me sitting on the edge of my seat.
This is a delicious slow burn that gave everything I wanted in a romance book while setting the scene and secondary characters for the books to come in this new series. I can't WAIT for more books in this series.
Without giving too much away you get a FMC who is struggling through life with her extra crazy and mean family and an MMC who is hiding from his past but is intrigued by a certain someone. Add in plot TWISTS that keep you craving more, swoon worthy moments and hot chemistry and spice...perfection!
I'd recommend this if you are in the mood for a spicy story about a who with a secret past and the woman he loves confronting someone who is determined to destroy them both.
Overall, I rate it 4⭐out of 5 based on the following: 🤩Enjoyment - 4; 👥Characters - 4; 📖Plot - 4; 🗺️Atmosphere - 4; and🖋️Writing - 4 with the first 3 categories being most important. Based on my review scale a 4⭐rating means I really enjoyed this, I'd recommend it, can see myself potentially rereading it, and I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.
What worked for me: • Romeo's character is apparent with how he cared for Mable's dog and his actions when she was the target of guy with a grudge • Mable's calm acceptance when she figures out Romeo's secret
5 She’s the Surest Thing That’s Ever Happened to Him Stars!
New characters, new location and new suspense and drama! While I’ve been reading LLV for a few years now, this is the first series where it’s all brand new characters and I don’t have to wonder what all the connections are to previous books and series. This book is an amazing start to this series. Romeo and Mable, while opposites, sort of, are so perfect for each other.
Romeo has landed in Mable’s small Montana town trying to stay under the radar along with a few other men that are all living a different life than they were just a few weeks ago. This man has lived an entire life in his thirty plus years but when he gets to Sawtooth, his life changes in every way possible especially when he meets Mable thanks to Brawny. Their first meeting was filled with electricity and I was ready for every minute of it.
Mable has lived in this town her entire life and to say that her life hasn’t been easy is putting it mildly. I won’t go into details because I couldn’t do it justice. But trust me, this girl is due to have something go her way even if a certain man isn’t quite on board yet.
This book kept me on my toes and I so enjoyed watching Mable and Romeo dancing around each other and all the happenings in this town that at some points had me laughing but then I’d turn to another chapter and I had tears in my eyes. When we find out EVERYTHING it had me slack jawed! The way LLV crafts this story is diabolical.
Mable and Romeo have a true slow burn, but it fits so well with them. It was hot and steamy and sexy and filled with so much emotion. The way they come together creates a healing in both of them. When things start to come to light, they lean on each other and realize that while it may not seem like they would make a perfect pair, they really do bring out the best in each other.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the phenomenal secondary characters in this book. We get introduced to the men of the future books and potentially some of their soon to be romantic interests. This book is filled with friendships, newly formed and those that have been for a lifetime, and is proof of what banding together for the right thing can always result in the good rising above the bad!
Decent beginning but can we have a heroine who DOESN'T need rescuing from their families, who they don't fight without the help of a man. Just saying.
Mable and Romeo are a working class romance that evolves quickly to Mable being a trust fun recipient that had a family who was crap, especially her father and stepmother. We find out that Birdie was only mean because her own mother was a nasty person working to make the girls think each of them were bitches to the other.
Romeo running and then not at least texting her through his sister or something. Sorry, but he should have made the effort. And the thing with Seri, that was so expected, nothing new to see here.
Also, all the single ladies introduced, Rocky, Birdie, and Cody. I can see them all ending up with the other men with maybe one surprise lady thrown in. I'm not a fan of the foreshadowing that we have been seeing consistently like this. Especially, the sisters ending up with the brothers of the men or brothers in the MC. So convenient, too convenient.
Good quick read with no crazy plot overload but really just a re-tread with the crazy woman family. Why these women can't get some gumption and destroy them on their own then cut her ties not sure? I'd enjoy a stronger female lead for the future leads like ones from the past like Reese or Cheyenne, Payton, Viddie, Adeline, or even Katie.
And please for the next few, please for the love of all that's readable, remove the hating Montana and the snow and the environment and wanting to move to Florida. So much of that country is God's country and constantly moaning about the cold and snow is abhorrent to me. There are plenty of people who live in Montana, love it, and take pride in their strength to get through their winters. Also, there are ways to combat seasonal depression besides moving. Maybe incorporate that in your next book.
Please return to strong females and males both.

Ms. Vale continues to gift readers with compelling storylines, unforgettable characters, and edge of your seat action courtesy of this first book in her newest series. Having met Romeo in her previous book I was immediately captivated by him and couldn't wait to get greater insight into his life. Helping him make a new life is Mable, a woman surrounded by family drama and just waiting to break free. Together these two scarred individuals find themselves in a fight to reach their HEA.
Romeo is a recent transplant to a small town lumber community, carrying a BIG secret while staying below the radar. He's a strong but silent man who just goes about his business. But the moment he meets Mable, a caring and supportive side emerges fully, a side that warmed my heart and made him even sexier. What starts out as a slow burn between him and Mable soon grows into a decadently delightful journey to HEA, one full of surprising twists and turns.
Mable has lived in this small town her whole life, dealt with a family that has left her scarred, and I was just praying for something good to happen to her. That good thing is meeting Romeo! From their first meeting, one that crackled, to their slow burn journey to HEA readers will be rooting for them. With Romeo by her side, Mable stands up in ways she never thought possible. To protect Romeo's secret she'll do whatever it takes in actions that left me cheering.
Together they're an immensely likable couple with an unforgettable story that kept me on the edge of my seat. Their romance brought out every emotion in me and laid the groundwork for many more enticing tales. Romeo and Mable set the bar pretty high here, but with a cast of equally appealing secondary characters, I'm left excited for what comes next in the Don't Date Him series!
This new series has had a fantastic start. The characters were amazing, and the plot was filled with family drama, heartbreak, mystery, suspense, love, and laughter.
One aspect we truly appreciate about this author's storytelling is how she keeps her previous characters alive in her current books and series. Apollo played a significant role in making this plot special. Despite his past losses, it was heartwarming to see him happily engaging in problem-solving, a skill he excels at, to help Mabel and Romeo achieve their happily ever after.
The story was captivating from start to finish. Mabel and Romeo naturally gravitated towards each other, and their connection felt effortless, even amidst Mabel's chaotic life. Romeo's unwavering support for Mabel was truly touching. Throughout the story, readers will experience a range of emotions, from laughter to tears, heartbreak to love, all while enjoying the witty banter and the twists and turns of the plot.
Romeo and Mabel made a beautiful couple, their chemistry palpable, and their love for each other evident. They truly belonged together.
A standout moment was when Mabel candidly shared her future dreams with the stand-in dad of her dreams, adding a touch of humor and vulnerability to the story.
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed this story and meeting the new characters. We look forward to reading their stories in the future. The ending was perfect for this wonderful couple, and Romeo has earned a spot on our swoony character list. He is truly memorable.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Romeo & Mabel- triggers- hospice, family discord, identity theft, theft, car accidents, cancer, hacking. Ooooh… I'm so excited about this series and let me just preface this by stating that I freaking called it. You'll know what I'm talking about if you read “forced proximity” from the Content Advisory series. It's not necessary to read it first but it'll make a little more sense. Romeo is Dru’s brother and Apollo’s BIL. He's been unofficially transferred to Montana in the dead of winter to start a new life after serving time. 🤫 Trying to keep his head down until he returns a dog to his owner, he's instantly taken with Mabel. Mabel has had a difficult life. She had to deal with an evil step mom and sister most of her life and they've done nothing but make her miserable but when she meets Romeo, things get better. Only her feelings for him seems a little one sided. This is a little of a slow burn but necessary as the drama unfolds. It's hot, sexy and freezing all at the same time. Iykyk. I'm so excited to get into this new series. It's definitely another slight switch in the type of men LLV writes without being too much of a change. I Loved it. I Would have liked an excerpt on what happened after the power outage.
📖Genre & Tropes📖 : biker romance x ex convict hero x cute heroine x toxic family x lies and blackmails plot x spicy

The first book of a new nice series about bikers
With this volume, LLV launches a new series centered around the brother of one of the heroines from her Content Advisory series, who "escaped" from prison thanks to Apollo's intervention.
While it doesn't quite reach the heights of LLV's earlier series (which are still my favorites), I really enjoyed this romance. It's cute, sexy, and full of drama (I absolutely love it when families are completely unhinged !).
In short, a light and sexy romance that I enjoyed reading !
I didn't enjoy this book. It's nearly insta love which I'm not against but there's like... nothing to support this insta love plus it's trying to act like it's built on something but there's nothing to be built on. The characters are downright caricatures. I know some people who I think are not good people at all but they're not 1dimensional and transparent like this book portrays them to be....... I was open to the premise being weird based on the blurb so I'm not going to complain about that but... it was a bit strange. Anyway, the story did not flow, some things were super rushed others were too slow... i nearly dnfed it. I will say the last 25% of the book are much better than the beginning
I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.
Welcome to a new series from Lani Lynn Vale. This is the Don't Date him series and this is the first book. This is the story of Mabel and Romeo. To say that Mabel has lived in some serious family drama her entire life, might be an understatement. Romeo though is no stranger to what that is like. From the first moment they met they have a undeniable connection to each other. They are friends first and foremost. But how compatible they are cannot be denied. We get to live out all that family drama. Or maybe I should say some of it. Mable loves to cook and if you are hungry while reading this book, it might be bad for your waistline. There is also a recipe at the end of the book that i am going to try. I loved this girl and her outlook when things seemed so bleak, and I would have lost it from all the drama. Romeo is so protective, and I loved that side of him so very much. He would stand by Mable till the end of time. Of that I have not doubt. I loved reading this book, and I so can't wait to see all the amazing stories we get out of this new series.
Lani Lynn Vale strikes again with a bold, addictive series starter that proves why she’s a must-read romance author.
Have I mentioned how much I love the way Lani Lynn Vale delivers unique, utterly unputdownable reads time and time again? Her brand-new Don’t Date Him series kicks off with House of BS & Lies, and she comes out swinging with an instant hit that feels completely fresh and original.
Romeo and Mable’s story is a deliciously slow-burn, tension-filled romance layered with suspense that genuinely caught me off guard. This isn’t just a love story—it’s one wrapped in secrets, danger, and emotional depth. Romeo, a burly, tall, irresistibly hot lumberjack, is hiding something that could have devastating consequences if revealed… and watching that tension simmer added a gripping edge to every page.
Mable absolutely stole my heart. The BS she’s dealing with from her family had me fully invested—yes, there was definite Kindle-tossing involved. Her strength, vulnerability, and resilience add so much depth to the story, and the way the chemistry builds between her and Romeo feels natural, intense, and perfectly paced.
As with any strong first book in a series, the groundwork matters—and Lani Lynn Vale knows exactly how to do it right. We’re given just enough insight into the other men whose stories are still to come, creating anticipation without overshadowing the main romance.
House of BS & Lies is a powerful, addictive start to what promises to be another must-read series—and I’m already all in for what’s next.
We met Romeo in the last book of Content Advisory. His sister’s husband ‘broke’ him out of prison and set him up in a new place, Montana… Peace, quiet and where nobody knows him.
Mabel grew up in Montana. After her mother died, her father remarried and she had to deal with her evil stepmother and her sister. And her father didn’t care how they treated her. She only had her best friend, and irony her stepsister's dad to look out for her…
Mabel was someone with a good heart and even though she had terrible family, she took care of everyone around her. Romeo also had a crappy past. And a secret that he cant share, as it would be devastated consequences for everyone. Could he trust Mabel with his secret, with his life.
As always, this new LLV series starts off with a bang. Lots of drama, lots of secrets, a bit of a twist! I couldn’t stop once I started, read the whole thing in one go. And now I’m on the edge waiting for the next one to be released 😊 New series definitely going to be another hit 😊
With the help of his brother in-law Romeo has created a new life for himself in Montana even if it is totally unlike anything he has lived before but at least he has his freedom. When he meets Mable he can’t deny the feelings he has for her even if he knows the best thing he could do was to stay away. This becomes even more difficult when they find themselves sharing a dog and all he wants to do is protect her.
Mable has a tumultuous family life which continues to create complications even as she tries to distance herself from them. When Romeo comes into her life she has deep feelings for him however his actions have her believing that he only wants to be friends. When she realizes that isn’t the case the chemistry erupts but the drama they must face if only beginning.
Both Mable and Romeo have had to deal with a lot in their lives but that only deepens the connection between them. As the truth comes to light it will rock both their worlds, but they are surrounded by friends and family who would do anything for them.
I loved this series starter from LLV. This new series focuses on a group of covertly released prisoners who have been given new identities and new lives in Montana. This is LLV's take on small town/mountain men.
Romeo is happy with his second chance. He is building a quiet life with a stable job. He then meets Mable. She is a firey, heavy machinery operator with a whole heap of crazy family issues. These two initially bond over Romeo caring for her lost dog and their shared custody arrangement for Brawny. From this they become friends with a deep connection and sparky attraction. Romeo is hesitant to take things further but Mable takes matters into her own hands.
The love story is central to the narrative but I loved the surrounding characters and world building. There is a lot to learn about these men and their potential love stories. This is series that I am already hooked on.
Flirty, slowburning, mountain man and feisty FMC romance.
Oh my what a way to spend a day ! New year , new reads , new series , new characters and “friends” what more could one ask for !?
Mable can cook and loves dogs so she already has a friend in me 😉 but her “talents” don’t end there , this girl knows how to handle heavy equipment and she blew my socks off as well a few others 🤪
Romeo was in prison and we met up as his break out was being planned , I wanted in on the action and I did get it 😉
Romeo has eyes you could drown in and he’s had his fair share of family woes so he recognises the troubles Mabel is having and I love the way he has her back and supports her 🥰
Mabel and Romeo became friends when they realised they have a common friend and it just blossoms into something beautiful and I loved every moment of getting to know them as people but also together as a unit 🥰 Mabel must hold on tight I may just try and pry him from her hands 😂
Gritty and emotional! It's always fun to kick off a new series with Lani Lynn Vale, so a good bit of time was spent building up the list of characters and letting us get to know a little about each. Romeo is immediately endearing and heartfelt with his connection to her dog and returning him to her no matter how attached he was, etc. I felt like we were slightly overwhelmed with Birdie and the core of Mable and Romeo were rushed over a little bit more than normal in a LLV love story. I enjoyed them both, loved their connection and look forward to more in the series, I just wanted a little more here and now too. Overall, this was a well developed set up of the series and had a solid hook to keep us reading to get to know the other guys more. I enjoyed getting to see more of Apollo from the last series too!
The House of BS & Lies by Lani Lynn Vale is book one in the new series: Don’t Date Him. It tells the story of ex-con Romeo and Mable. Mable is a woman who is struggling through her life, mainly due to how her family treats her (what they do to her is pretty horrific), enter Romeo an ex-con who is trying to stay under the radar. There is definitely instant attraction between the two characters with a slow burn thrown in for good measure. Romeo and Mable are great together; they have good banter and just seem to genuinely like each other and Romeo has Mable’s back which is great.
A really good start to a new series and I can’t wait to see what comes next!
ARC received for a fair, honest and sometimes long review. All opinions are my own. 😊
Kicking off a new series in the Lani-verse, and we aren't in Texas this time. And it's cold! With Lani's books, you know what to expect, and this is no different. But be assured, if you love Lani, you will love this book too. We have Romeo, who is brother-in-law to the computer wizard Apollo from the previous series. So if Romeo needs help, Apollo has got him. And we have Mable, a fantastic cook and lover of huge dogs. Plus, a proficient heavy equipment operator. I love that about Lani's heroines; they can do anything and still be the FMC. Their book was good, but I feel the series will only get better when we get to know the other guys who came to this area with Romeo. There isn't the bond there immediately, as with Content Advisory, or her other series. I am looking forward to seeing where this goes.
This is the first in a new series, and my word, what an awesome beginning, Romeo and Mable’s story is! Mable is a heavy equipment operator, while Romeo, is a convicted felon, who escaped from prison, with hie death faked, thanks to his brother-in-law, and he has now built a new life for himself, with only a few people knowing his secret. Romeo’s word tilts on its axels when he meets Mable, and they complement each other perfectly. This is a well written, easy to read, action packed story, with family dynamics, friendships, emotions, lies, secrets, suspense, intrigue, heartbreak, manipulation, drama, mystery, trust, humour, witty banter, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, tragic, twisted, and unpredictable, small town romance. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
New LLV Series, new town, new characters and a slow burn….who could ask for more!
I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am for a brand spanking new and fresh series from LLV. She always creates amazing places and people in her series. And this one doesn’t disappoint. Not only does this book draw you in right away, a few chapters in your ready to love these ex cons.
Rome (Meo) has found a new life and home in Montana. He’s no longer in jail and he needs to keep it that way. He doesn’t want to bring attention to himself but once Mabel enters his life that may be a difficult task. Mabel doesn’t have an easy life. Her family is a wreck and once that’s brought into her work life Romeo takes notice and his life will never be the same.
With many twists and turns you won’t be able to put this book down….and you’ll be desperate for the next book!
This story has pain, secrets, abuse, and heartbreak.
If you have not read the below I would recommend reading those books(s) first: Forced Proximity (Content Advisory #7) - <-this is the sister’s book
This is Mable and Romeo’s story. If you read Forced Proximity you learn a little about Romeo. He is living far from home. When he meets Mable there is a pull but he has secrets he needs to protect so friendship is all he can offer. After all she has been lied to all her life he can’t add to those lies. But when forced to leave her with no word he is hurt and knows if he can just get back to her, he will keep her forever. They both have a past he is worse than hers, but she knows that no matter what he is a good person. Can they get a chance to have a future or will one person ruin that for them?
I'm so excited to have another new series to read from Lani Lynn Vale. Her books always make me laugh, sometimes cringe, but always leave me wanting more.
House of BS & Lies was a great story to start the new Don't Hate Him Series. As per usual with Lani's books, this one is a spin off from a character in her last series and has some tense moments in it.
Romeo is a convicted felon and Mable is a woman that live a straight and narrow life. Romeo may be a felon, but he's a good man at heart, and Mable can't help but fall for him. Even when she's angry, he finds a way to lighten her day.
Mable is a hard working young woman that has dealt with a lot in her young life, but she's finding that her circle could be a little bigger.
I loved this story and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series. I love Lani's books and devour them as soon as I can.
