Would've been 4 stars if Mabel hadn't been glittered up to the nines to be the angel she isn't, because she is a shitty person, not gonna lie. Loved Birdie and her small clan that supported her, the rest can go kick rocks in hell, including the H. Just saying

This ended up being just okay. Barely. 2.5 stars.
I wanted to DNF at 56% because everyone – with the exception of Birdee (heroine), Shade (her BFF), Reyelle (Shade’s mum), Charleigh (her new friend), and Bernice (the hero’s sister) – were complete and utter arseholes. Including the hero. I decided to keep going, hoping it got better. And it kinda did but mostly didn’t. I ended up feeling ambivalent about the hero by the end. And all the drama that happened in the last part of the book had me rolling my eyes. It was ridiculously over the top and made no sense. Oh, and apparently, by the end we’re all pretending Mable is a nice person (spoiler alert: she’s not).
I normally like unlikeable/messy characters but they have to make sense. Or be interesting. Or at least have a plot that is. This one kind of fell apart for me. Maybe I needed to read previous books for me to feel differently? Also, I lost track of what happened to one of the characters who was causing the heroine trouble but then conveniently disappeared?

In the last book, Birdie didn't come off the best until the end and we learned she was just as wronged as her sister. So seeing how her life was in this one made me really mad. She really was on her own and I was glad that finally someone else saw, that person being Creed. It didn't mean that all of a sudden he was team Birdie, but the more time he spent with her he saw what kind of a person she was and how she didn't do things to point out the good things she did, nor want to be all "poor me". Instead she did what was needed to keep her life moving, which as times was sad.
It was interesting to see things change between the two, for good, then bad, then good again. You could tell that the "bad" part wasn't malicious, she just wanted Creed to have something she longed for. While it took a bit, he finally did come around to see that.
Things got so crazy at the end, from Birdie's accident at work, to what went on with her family. She dodged a bullet there when they didn't talk to her. It was nice to see how things ended, finally Birdie has people around her that really like and love her, something she deserved.

2 stars. Oh mannnn, I am disappointed that I actually spent $6 on this book. I could kick myself for that.
The reason: I felt like the synopsis didn't really represent the book at all. I was thinking more small town angst and less biker town stuff. Just a whole lot of over the top drama! Insomuch as you were kinda lost. Villains of the story just drop off to who knows what happens to them (the creepy boss).
Cons: let me tell you this whole book was a whirlwind of constant new characters being introduced. Some SERIOUS backstory and multiple plots that I was just lost on. Idk maybe you had to read 2 or three previous books to even understand this convoluted plot, but it was too much and not enough at the same time.
I am just overwhelmingly disappointed and underwhelmed with the plot. The characters were ok, there were just SO many constant characters being introduced and random plots that sputtered that I was left spinning.
As for romance-it was ok. Nothing overly inspiring or passionate.
Pros: hats off to the author for even having the cajones to publish.

This author's books are hit or miss for me, but I liked this one. This is second in the series, but I didn't feel like I really missed anything. Especially since the first had a mean girl FMC who treated the h from this book like shit for a long time. So yeah, her being forgiven in this book like nothing happened wouldn't have been for me. The reason I skipped book 1.
Creed the H here is originally from a group that was broken out of prison who were wrongly accused of their crimes. From what I got this was from the help of a local MC that gave them all new identities. A bit OTT because that could never happen, but I was ok with it. Birdee the h was the black sheep of her family, but not from her own doing. Her father all but abandoned her, and her stepsister and half sister treated her horribly. With a biological mother that was crazy. She was left out and lonely, but she wasn't weak. She had her found family, and once Creed pulled his head out of his ass, she had him as well. I'd definitely classify this as slow burn as far as on page intimacy goes, but the feelings were always there. Overall I liked it. It was an easy read. BUT! It's not free on KU. You have to pay extra and this author's books are expensive on there. Definitely could be cheaper in my opinion with only a page count of 250 pages.
Safety: I just wanted to mention if anyone is grossed out by blood there is a long scene where an artery in Birdee's arm is severed and blood is spurting everywhere coating her friend in it. The whole scene was OTT and kinda made me chuckle 🙈. Also, for anyone sensitive to animals being euthenised there are a few good parts here as Birdee goes and volunteers to be with them on their last day. Only discussed in conversation. Not on page. Plus, mentions of hunting. It's Montana so... I come from hunters, so it didn't bother me, but just wanted to add in case someone else would be uncomfortable.

Readers once again need to hold on tight as you'll quickly find yourself on a rollercoaster ride of emotions! When a side character from the previous book takes center stage here readers will discover a slow burn romance full of unexpected twists and turns that will leave them breathless with anticipation and turning pages frantically. By the end, you'll be thanking Ms. Vale for another beautifully crafted tale that has you counting down the days until the next release in this series.
Birdee was a bit villainous in the previous book, someone who I wasn't sure could be redeemed, but I discovered a whole different side to her here. Birdee's life has been less than happy, with lots of hardships that leave her only able to count on herself. She's put a wall up around herself that makes HEA a hard-fought victory for the man set on redeeming himself too. Birdee truly evolved here, broke my heart in many instances as I learned more about her past, and she really deserved happiness after everything her family put her through. She was strong with the weight of the world on her and needed someone to put her first just once.
Creed Daugherty is living life as a free man after serving time for a crime he didn't commit. His time in prison has left him a bit bitter and a bit of a loner for much of the beginning of the story. Once Birdee comes into his life though we see a man of strong emotions. After his harsh demeanor early on, he comes through wholeheartedly for Birdee when she needs support most in a cheer-worthy culmination to their HEA. I might've been a bit unhappy with Creed at first, but I was in love with him by the end.
This was a gut-wrenching, multi-layered romantic tale. There was suspense, along with lots of unexpected twists and turns, to keep me fully invested in this story from start to finish. Both Birdee and Creed are strong and relatable characters, both redeemed themselves along their bumpy journey to HEA, and I was rooting for them every step of the way. Along with these appealing main characters there were some equally strong secondary characters who stuck out and left me breathless for what's coming next in the series. With its compelling ending, readers will especially be clamoring for more, and with her usual talent Ms. Vale will give readers exactly what they want!

I felt so bad for Birdee and most of the time wished I could have told her to move….move very far away from everyone. Her job skills seem like they could be moveable to any other location. She’s the forgotten one, that no one really puts any effort into building a relationship with and in the previous book we learned her mother deliberately set her up for others to hate her. As well as telling Birdee lies about her family so that most of her relationships are damaged. Birdee has two friends, Shade a long time friend and a new friend Charleigh who give her as much support as they can and give little care to the rumors that swirl around Birdee. Creed now lives in Montana, with the rest of the guys that Apollo rescued and is working to figure out how to build a life with an important piece missing. He seems to have a brotherhood that he can depend on at any time and for any issue that arises. Birdee mistakenly tries to give Creed what he’s missing and it literally ends up with her being ostracized by the community. That is, until Creed acknowledges that he seriously overreacted and from there it’s Creed trying to make up for his very bad behavior. I like how Creed did what he needed to do to make amends and show Birdee how great thing could be with them. There are a lot of twist and turns in the story that swirl around Birdee and Creed. Enjoyed but still think Birdee should have got out early on before everything happened to her.

This is not so much a review as it’s my reading reaction.
I’ve been curious about this author as I’ve seen multiple comparisons to Kristen Ashley. I can see why, I guess…somewhat.
Kudos for a heroine with a truly unique career. And for a truly horrifying catastrophe. I’ve never come across those before in all my reading over the years, so points for that.
On a separate note, I’d read more by this author if their books were available on KU, but I don’t want to ‘pay to keep’ as they are not re-reading quality for me. Lots of untied loose ends left untied and unfinished possibilities.
Also, FYI, this doesn’t work well as a standalone. I assume you would need to read the series in order to know all the back stories and motivations of all of the many many characters who show up in this book?
P.S. Why is the character’s name spelled Mable instead of Mabel? I can see Maybelle or even Maple, but Mable? Weird. I can’t not spellcheck my brain to seeing table instead!

Birdee Calvert has a reputation around town she did not earn, sure the rumors were rampant but no one ever took the time to see if there was any truth to them. Having sisters who hate you, a father who avoids you like the plague and a mother who would put any villain to shame just are facts in Birdee's life. For a brief moment, more like a blip she thought the truth would change things only to find they did not.
Creed Daugherty has heard all the rumors about Birdee. He has paid attention and what he sees where Birdee is concerned is not the perception that everyone else has. When Birdee gets hurt, Creed helps her out. He tries to fight the attraction to Birdee but it isn't long before he decides she is his future. Will Birdee agree?
Another fabulous book by this author. I found myself torn a bit on Mable from the first book but so far this series is fantastic. Very different then this authors other books. Had a few twists I did not see coming.

not as expected
Typically a great author and fun reading. This particular installment was not my favorite hoping the next one will be.
Why isn’t this one a favorite? The lack of romance. Lack of fun moments as a couple or in life in general. The family dynamics for the female lead didn’t really make sense and sometimes I just want things to make sense. The Cody plot twist came out of nowhere. The red strings didn’t really connect, the dots didn’t connect, the story didn’t come together with intricate or mind blowing plot twists. “When in doubt-kill someone.” Being the most common plot twist when things get slow in the franchise.
Last thoughts, I just expect more lovin in a “just out of prison plot.” Lackin passion, lackin fun, cracka lackin action.
It just snowed for the 9th million time this year and I wanted a cozy book to pass the time. The snow fall was more exciting than the book this time. Better luck next time.

I’m so glad Birdie got her own HEA!! This poor girl has been used and treated like crap her whole life. A crazy family and I’m talking Loony Tunes crazy.
I have selective hearing. I’m sorry you weren’t selected today.
These men just want to live the rest of their lives in peace after everything that’s happened. Creed didn’t have a good upbringing at all.
I fully intend to haunt people when I die. I have a list.
This story was sad at times. My heart broke for Birdie and what she had to live through. Secrets come out but in the end all ended on a high note.

For the last 2 or 3 years I've maintained that chatGPT has written or been involved in the writing of this authors "books". I dare you to read this one and tell me I'm wrong. So bumbled up, characters who were important just walk off and we never know where they went, plot? what plot? By the end you want to tear your hair out or chuck the book across the room or both and considering it's an electronic device that's some hate. Go on, read it and tell me I'm not right. I dare you.

Its nice to see the real Birdee since she was kind of a villain previously. It was frustrating to see the previous heroine as a bit of a villain. Birdee is just a nice person who had the misfortune of having terrible parents. She was a puppet for her mother, who ruined her life, and now she still deals with people treating her like the bad guy. Creed knows the whole story, but is still a little wary of her and when she does something for him, he FLIPS out on her. I was really not pleased with his behavior.

An okay story, nothing out of the usual for Ms. Vale's repertoire of plots. As another viewer stated so I'm not going into huge detail, the amount of people and background information at first was too overwhelming. I understand we needed to know all that had come before and the relations between the people if we hadn't read the prior books but having been a long-time reader I mostly skimmed it and still it was confusing. I felt some of it very unnecessary because it didn't add anything to the narrative or the interactions. Didn't help me understand motivations and the crazy reaction of Creed to his sister being told he was alive. And don't get me started on Cody and her crazy.
The fact he reacted as he did and didn't immediately set it right, yeah that's a hard no for me. And again, like I stated in my last book review of Vale's heroines. CAN WE NOT HAVE A FEMALE THAT'S SUCCESSFUL AND NOT DESTITUTE? The emotional and verbal abuse this woman suffered from should not have been compounded with the fact she was 'poor'.
Which she wasn't she 'chose' her situation which Vale loves to do to her heroines, (ex. got a trust-fund but refuses to use it, has money in the bank and a car that costs a mint but garages it) Just once, can we have a successful but unhappy woman in these plots or maybe she's perfectly happy with her career and her life but the man brings that extra special joy to life when they connect with their soulmate and best friend. ex. Luke and Reese or Sam and Cheyenne.
I know she doesn't read my reviews because I've been a long-time reader and instead of taking the feedback and improving her writing it only seems to get worse. Pumping out a $5.99 book a month I guess I shouldn't expect quality reading but she used to be so much better at writing characters that were full-fleshed but not completely just useless and every aspect of their life so miserable. The plots made sense most of the time and endings were fulfilling and covered all the explanations of weird side plot stuff or we knew we'd see more about it in the future.
And again, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT'S FUN TO READ, stop introducing the next couple in the prior book. I don't need to know that his sister will likely end up with one of his ex-con buddies or her friend will end up with one too. Can we not already?

In true Lani Lynn Vale fashion, she brought me another book that had me glued from beginning to end. There is not a book from her that I have not loved. Each and every character is written to bring the storyline to live right before my eyes. This one is all about Birdee and Creed. Opposites but yet so similar. Birdee's life has been less than happy with lots of hardship that have her really only able to count on herself. It was a gut wrenching multi-layered romantic tale that was entertaining, emotionally charged about second chances. I was on a rollercoaster ride of emotions with this read but that is something that I expected when it comes to books from this author. I am somewhat disappointed if I don't have that ride when I read her books.

I didn't think this series could get any better, but I was sorely mistaken. This is Birdie’s story and wow did she have a life so far and it wasn't a good one. When I was reading Mabel’s story, I felt sorry for Mabel and all that she had gone through which she had but wow when I read Birdie’s story and everything that she dealt with I was just completely floored. I have to say I absolutely love this series, and I never know what's gonna happen next when I turn the page. I don't know what's going to be on that page I'm always kept guessing this is what makes a great book. Lani Lynn Vale is such an artful storyteller that she weaves her stories and characters around her readers in a way that you don't want to put the book down and that you feel like you're in that story in that town walking right next to that character. I have to say that I am so in love with this series and the men in this series they are so rough around the edges and you don't think that they're going to be romantic and loving in any way, but they are. Which I think was one of the biggest surprises for me. I've read a lot of books with a strong male lead, but I have to say that I am so in love with the characters in this series and the fact that she threw in some Dixie wardens in there perfect perfect perfect! One thing I really love about Lani's stories and how they interlink with one another is that there will every so often come a character thay you will despise. One that you would never think could turn the tables and not only become redeemable but also one that you will come to love and respect.
Birdie is so beyond independent its not even funny. This woman has very few people to look out for her whilst she tries to keep her head above water and not become a bitter human for all the injustice that she's had to face. My heart just went out for her and the rage I felt. Crazy.
Creed is justifiably angry. This man had the book thrown at his for something he didn't intentionally do. He lost everything twice over and the prospect of something new is terrifying. So naturally he gets angry and says silly things. Did he overstep? Hugely. But a broken man bites first and oh lord does he make up for it.
It wasn't smooth sailing for them. In fact it was pretty turbulent but in the end they needed one another. They needed someone to fight for them and they needed to be loved in a way that wouldn't leave either of them questioning if it was real. It was heartbreaking and sweet . Frustrating and hilarious. In the end it was exactly where they needed to be.

But I was curious, and I have to admit I don't regret it : it's still unrealistic, with plot twists that go off in all directions, full of drama and psychotic characters, but even if it wasn't a huge favorite, I still enjoyed reading it !
In short, a biker romance full of drama that's a good read !

Lani Lynn Vale's newest series is blowing my expectations out of the water! Her latest release People We Avoid was amazing from start to finish.
This is Birdee and Creed's story. We met Birdee in book 1 as Mable's crazy step-sister but we really learn about Birdee and who she really is throughout book 2. My perception of Birdee did a complete 180 after reading this book and I think it's amazing what she's gone through.
Creed is an ex-con who was wrongly incarcerated for a crime he didn't commit. His sister, Bernice, fought tooth and nail to get him released but to no avail. Years later he is released and finds himself in Montana as a Game Warden. I love Creed's compassion towards all living things and especially Birdee.
Poor Birdee has the entire town thinking she's a b**ch and even her "family" seems to have shunned her after getting close in book 1. Now, she's very much on her own with her best friend Shade and her job. I LOVED the uniqueness that Lani Lynn Vale gives to her characters and Birdee is no exception. Birdee has a doctorate in Animal Science and MILKS SNAKES for a living! How freaking cool?!
Birdee and Creed's relationship is very unconventional but I loved it from the word go. I can't recommend this book and this series enough and can't wait to read the next book!

When I met Birdie in book1, I really didn’t like her. She was bitchy and just from what you read not a good person. But then we got to the end and find out that Birdie was a victim just like her stepsister.
In this story we got to know her a little better, and I have to say that I really didn’t like Mable and Codie. Poor Birdie really got the wrong end of the stick. She got stuck with terrible parents and a terrible stepfather. When she got into an accident with her moped, I guess it was luck that it was Creed’s truck.
Now she has one person who will actually put her first.
Creed had a terrible past himself, besides for his sister, he had nobody. And then going to jail for the next 25 years for something that he didn’t do… Until he got a second chance. And now he is living in Montana as a Game Warden. Now it seems his not just getting a second chance at a new life, but also might be getting a chance at love.
I loved Birdie and Creed’s story. It was filled with so many surprises. I seriously did not see that ending coming. But I absolutely loved it. Creed was so amazing with Birdie. And I loved that he stood up for her with her father and sister. And that he put her first. Loved it. Loved the story, the characters, the romance and the suspense 😊

I loved this book. Its a fun story and is pretty light reading. Its the second book in the series and I did not read the previous book. At times I was lost but the author does a great job of catching you up with what you might have missed and the relationship to the characters.
One thing to note is that Cody is a girl. For a majority of the book I thought she was a he. But she is a pretty minor character for a majority of the book so its not an issue til later.
This story features Birdee who has had a bad rap in the last book. As we get to know her, she is absolutely awesome. A huge sweetheart but also one who is overlooked a lot. She also has a terrible family. But so does Creed. In a way it bonds these two as they get to know each other.
Creed is a jerk to Birdee a lot. Even before he pulls his major fit in this book, I thought he was a jerk. I really didn't see much romance before they get together. But once he makes a mess of things, I liked how he was after that. Thats when he won my heart.
A lot happens in this story and it's what made it a really fun book. It also introduces some really terrific new female characters, and I am excited to see what happens next.

This is the story of Birdee and Creed. If you read the last book, Bridee was probably not your favorite person. I thought she was going to be the villain in every story. But I was wrong. She has really had a tough life. She really has no one in her life that she can count on. The walls this girl has built are fierce and strong and there is no getting through them. I have to tell you though that you need to be prepared for a broken heart at times. These two characters really have gone through it as Creek is a man who had been to prison for a crime he didn't commit and is bitter and pretty much a loner. Birdies trauma has been caused by her family and they put this poor girl through so much!! I must say you might get angry too. Or heck I should just say your going to feel a lot of things reading this book. When Birdee and Creed meet I swear it was like a magical transformation in him as she is a men with really big emotions. He might seem gruff and make you mad in the beginning but do not give up on Creed. There of course is some suspense in the book. It wouldn't be a Lani Lynn Vale book is there wasn't. I loved reading this story and could not lay it down.

This is the 2nd book in this brilliant series which is fast becoming my favourite.
We met Birdee in book 1 and after the revelations in this book i had a feeling I would be totally #teambirdee and I totally was!! I got so ragey on her behalf wanting to jump through the pages and rip a lot of people new a**holes! I just want to give her a big hug and be on her cheer squad! she deserved so much better then she got from those around her and who were supposed to be her family!
Now Creed! whilst I loved him, i even wanted to rip him to pieces at one point BUT he did redeem himself and rightly so!! Creed himself has been through so much and after being convicted of a crime he did not commit is now living a new life in Montana!
With this one I laughed, I cried and got annoyed and protective of and for Birdee! I was hooked from beginning to end and finished this in an evening as I did not want to stop!! I cannot wait to see what is coming with the next book!

This small town in Montana keeps getting more interesting with each book. This second book focuses on Birdie and Creed. We met Birdie in book one and I wasn’t really sure how I felt about her. Now that I know the truth about a few things, I’m 100% on her side because this girl has been treated as less than for too long and by the people that are supposed to unconditionally love her.
Creed is a man that isn’t interested in getting to know anyone other than the men that are part of his inner circle. He definitely isn’t interested in getting to know Birdie better. Sometimes though fate steps in and what we didn’t know we wanted and/or needed happens and it changes everything.
There are some twists and turns in this book that kept me guessing and to say I was shocked at the end is putting it mildly. I mean my jaw dropped when it was all said and done because WOW!!!
I love the connection that Birdie and Creed developed and they truly are what they each needed. Love comes when we’re least expecting it and for these two, it brings peace, forgiveness, redemption and clarity on what’s really important and pushing aside anything or anyone that doesn’t believe in them.

Talk about a redemption story. In this book we follow Mabel’s half sister, Birdie and learn her side of the story. But we also see that Mabel wasn't the only one mistreated in that family. We also get a deeper look at another one of the SEVEN, Creed. His backstory is so sad and frustrating. But despite ending up in prison, he was still a really good guy who loves his baby sister. When he watches Birdie and notices how her family mistreats her, he's angry on her behalf and becomes her protector. Of course there are some bumps and bruises along the road for these two but they still end up becoming one scorching hot couple. Slow burn definitely. There's definitely a plot twist that switched up the game but I felt there was a missed opportunity or two with the antagonists. But it was definitely still a very good book.

Lani Lynn Vale delivers yet another gripping, unputdownable read with People We Avoid, and if this is only book two in the Don’t Date Him series, then I’m officially all in. This series already feels like a must-read, and I’m completely addicted to the rough-edged men and fiercely unique women who now call this small mountain town home. Every time I dive into one of Ms Vale’s stories, the outside world disappears—and I lose myself entirely in the one she creates.
We first met Birdie in book one, and let’s be honest… she probably wasn’t everyone’s favourite side character. But by the end of that book, Vale had quietly set the groundwork for something deeper—and here, Birdie’s story absolutely wrecks you. Once you truly get to know her, your heart can’t help but break for everything she’s endured.
Enter Creed Daugherty: the ultimate loner with a backstory that’s just as devastating. From the start, you know this was never going to be an easy road to a happily-ever-after. And just when you think you’ve braced yourself for the emotional fallout, Ms Vale does what she does best—throws in a twist you never saw coming and leaves you holding your breath.
This is a slow-burn, heart-pounding romance layered with emotion, pain, healing, and a touch of suspense that sneaks up on you when you least expect it. Birdee completely surprised me in this book—in the best possible way. In the previous installment, I felt pretty neutral about her, but here? I was rooting for her hard. When Creed got all bent out of shape with her, I was ready to climb through the pages and punch him myself. I may or may not have loudly muttered “HOW DARE HE” on my iPad… in a doctor’s office. Small town perks—they already know I’m dramatic.
Her family? Whew. I wanted to throat-punch more than one of them—but by the end, I understood their particular brand of chaos a whole lot better. I also had a few lingering questions by the end, which is the only reason this wasn’t a flawless read for me.
You can read this without having read the first book, but I highly recommend starting there. It adds depth to the characters and makes certain moments hit harder. And the best news? More books in this series are coming. I’m officially invested.
