Antecedents' Legacy #5

Assembly's Folly

Rate this book
Having survived what was thought to be a suicide mission, it was time for Zander and his crew to head back to MX Hub. A single fist wiping three behemoths off a planet— and with only two dead pilots— was considered a legendary feat. Before he departed, Abrill did her best to warn Zander that he’d likely be summoned to the Assembly.

Zander was indeed summoned, and it was looking like he’d have to leave everyone else behind. It took Lavella interceding to buy enough time for Dreams to finish their upgrade so the whole crew could go. The trip included Lavella and Vakdreak, who also had business with the Assembly.

Assembly Hub was even larger than MX Hub, being one of the two major Hubs. Zander’s tactics and actions were called into question, as well as rumors of him being a heretic to the Antecedents. Friends and foes took sides, but in the end, the Assembly voted to accept his new tactics. However, that didn’t stop the opposition for long.

Zander’s new friendship with a lead pilot from another Assembly ship roped them and his allies from the Assembled Fist into a plan to crush Zander and his ideas. All three ships were given a new to reclaim a lost world, an impossible task that had never been accomplished before. As the small strike fleet was set to leave, Zander got the approval from the captain in charge to lead all combat decisions for the mission.

Zander knew he’d have to break the box more than he already had. A world swarmed by Entoma for years wouldn’t be simple to deal with, but he had options. He made his plans to deal with what they’d likely find. His actions might see him branded as a heretic or a hero, but he didn’t care. All he cared about was completing the mission with as many pilots alive as possible.

talk talk talk

Like all of Daniel’s books after book one, and sometimes even book one, this book is 90% conversation. It purposefully skips past any action scenes, and instead has the characters talk about them in the most vaguest sense.

It is the complete opposite of ‘show don’t tell’
They talk about what they are going to do. Then they talk about what they did.

The story covers months of them clearing the planet they were sent to at the end of the last book, but really nothing much happens. Plot wise he trains other pilots, convinces them to let him use his ideas, and that’s it. Only negative thing to happen to the characters in the entire book is to side characters that were previously never named. Some of the security personnel that were not important at any part in the last few books.

Besides that everything goes perfectly, and you can’t even really envision how because of the lack of any descriptions or action scenes. Even the one smut scene, outside of the many references to the MC’s harem is pretty boring compared to previous books.

The world and main idea has potential, but the writing gets worse every book. If I was not reading these on Kindle Unlimited I would have stopped 3 books ago.

Don’t read if you want mech battles against aliens, or smut with aliens. In fact I’m not sure the real reason to read this book except to use as seeds for your imagination to dream about what it could have been.

Slightly lost

It’s hard to read a story that you already know the end of the book when you’re two chapters in. I feel like the fighting and training weren’t interesting enough to take up as much of the book as they did. And the feeling of the assembly was more like mocking our current political status. Seems like the actual story got slightly lost in the writing.

I recommend the story

When it comes to a sequel I'm basically looking for everything that made the last book worth it and then just a little bit more. This author has been able to deliver that consistency across quite a few of his stories. This does not preclude the fact that occasionally there are stories the gentleman tells that I don't like personally, but that doesn't mean that the story is anything less. Gentleman has been able to write entertaining stories for a variety of audiences. In this book we see our characters heading into what is thought of as a suicide mission. There was never any doubt that our main character utilizing the vicious tactics that can be associated with the ultra militaristic characteristics of the United States would succeed. Then of course there is the predictable blowback from the alien Council upon the return. We get some additions to the relationship between our main character and the others. We have a few surprises that pop up during the perilous mission. Now the question is at the ending of this book, where does the story go from here. My understanding is that the author is what's known as a discovery writer. At least that's what I believe that method is called. It's hard to tell if the author knows where the story is going from here. I look forward to finding out. With that said I call for a round of applause for everybody who had a hand in bringing the story to us, the Amazon readers.

I'm enjoying this series

It's a similar story for the author but in a different way. I like it.

I feel the action and strategy is well done, neither too brief nor overly long. We get to see how they do it, then we move ahead with the understanding it's done.

The world and intrigue is intriguing. I'm enjoying the twists and turns in the politics and world and am looking forward to where it goes.

But...
I understand there are relationships and they all care about each other, but I felt another series of his ended poorly because too much emphasis on "love" where it was basically the Love Pantheon with the divine power of Love. If this turns into the love ship crewed by the love squadron with generous donations from the love corporation I will drop the series.

Until then, I'm enjoying it!

After some weaker books, this 5th book of the series delivered quite well. There was a bit of tell, not show, as there were several big time skips involving the first ever clearing of a planet. More time was spent on training for it than the actual battles on it. In some ways, it would have gotten tedious to read about the same thing happening over and over again, but the training was similar in nature.

The harem grows by 2 in this particular book. The sex scenes were just ok. At this point, only the Captain probably remains as a harem member, once she can control her body heat.

Based on this book, I look forward to seeing what book 6 brings.

Always an excellent read!

I love Schinhofen novels.
The mixture of sci-fi action, political maneuvering, conspiracies and space bug extermination make for an excellent read.

But the romance, the family dynamic of Zanders harem, the different representations of the alien races and their cultures and rituals is always amazing to read about.

From Vixens and Todd's of the Kitsune, to the predator prey dynamics of vampires and everything in between. It's always fun to read and I'm looking forward to the next book!

a really interesting military sci-fi story with fantasy races.

The MC and his fists take on whats intended as a suicide mission to clear an invaded world of entoma. Of course they also are on the lookout for some form of backstabbing to insure that their enemies’ plots fail. Though I would have preferred more intrigue and political conflict, the story was really good. It’s also a potential end point to the series as tactics formerly considered heretical now have some level of acceptance.

Excellent addition to the series

Excellent addition to the series. It had some twists I was anticipating and not and some I thought but didn’t happen. All together a very good reading time - well worth time and cost. Now the saddest part waiting for the next book. I do sincerely thank Daniel Schinhofen for his dedication in writing and putting out books in a timely fashion. It is greatly appreciated and an endearing quality for readers - if I may be so bold as to proclaim for that group!!!

Worth the wait

Alternate universe, SF advanced technology, interstellar threat, alien races, harem adult situations

Zander and his family, friends, allies, and unexpected draftees spend most of a year using Zander's new tactics in fleet combat, boarding defense, and ground attack on a thoroughly entrenched enemy species that wipes out all competition. Engaging. Excellent editing. Look forward to the next one in the series.

Very good - the story touches on many things and needs the earlier parts read first

This one of my favorite series from the author. The story builds well and logically, my only whine (not an issue enough to be a complaint) is how fast the family grows in the volume. Greaves, the lead from an earth like ours is in an alternate universe, using his military/merc skills to improve fighting and battle approaches to a society very resistant to change yet fighting for survival.

Continues to be better than most of the author's fantasy stuff, but the same structural problems (e.g. elements I don't like) afflict this book. Good story progression overall, and sexy bits didn't overwhelm the plot. The author has some sort of fixation on damaged peoples' relationships, and more emphasis on that than I care to read is what loses this book a star.

We'll see what the next book offers, and I'll take this series one book at a time.

Interesting and fun

This book continues to build up and interesting world and enjoyable characters, but I feel that this entry focuses more on plot than characters.

More time is given to the development of Zander's attempt to shift the training and tactics of the Assembly than to the deeper parts of his relationships with other characters.

That being said, it's still very enjoyable.

One hell of a roller coaster

This series hits every solid trope of hardcore military combat in literature with a good dose of hlit fun and sci-fi flair. Add in the fun touch of fantasy on the side, and you have a very rare but delightful balance between science, fiction, and fantasy that few tales can match. Can't wait for the next novel as the stakes raise further still with the possibility of retaking worlds from an enemy that makes the zerg damn near adorable.

Good Harem Series With Military Action

This is a unique twist to writing harem type series. For one the series is written in space, with a dash of Multiverse, and sprinkles of military action. Overall, I think this is a good series, so if a harem adventure with military action is your cup of tea, you will enjoy this book. If you enjoy adventures, set in space, space, travel, and fighting aliens you will also enjoy the story.

Good Stuff

Zander leads a tiny fleet to take back a fallen star system. Uncertain allies, political treachery, and tens of billions of enemy monsters stand in his way.
Solid character work, flowing action scenes, touching (heh) romance, and legalistic maneuvers kept me reading all day.
A strong continuation of a good series. Recommended.

A smashing success!

This entry in the series is all about the battles involved in taking a planet back from the entoma. While I would have loved to see more of the action, I can appreciate that we didn't spend three books on a single plot point. This wraps up the arc neatly, and sets the stage for larger things to come. I am, as always, looking forward to the next one.

solid closing arc

Another well written book. This one we got to see space combat, planetary combat, and kinetic bombardment love it! It was nice to see a lot of the plot lines from prior books closed up. I’m really curious to see where the story will go from here. I’m thinking Terran’s will have a place in the future story as they have the potential for thousands of pilots.

Another great book in the series

I enjoyed the book, I was worried about how detailed the battles would be in the book, but it was fine with most of the combat being left out. Zanders family still grows to uncomfortable levels, and the flowering words describing their loving relationships is a little excessive, but still brings a smile. Enjoying this series.

A good conclusion to the series or a good pause in the story.

Daniel continues to craft interesting and intelligent stories. I'll be disappointed if this is the end, but this is a good place to pause. I'll look forward to whatever Daniel comes up with next.
Maybe he'll go back and pick up some of his other stories (hint, hont)!

If you like the genre then, Worth The Read!

All of Schinhofen's books & book series are consistently free of writing mistakes & editing errors. Even though there are character similarities across his series, each series settings & world building are done well & each one is inventively, creatively, different.

Great progress

This was a great "chapter" of the overall story to read. Once again the author did his best to keep the, story flowing while still extending the harem to an unrealistic size were this not fiction. My only complaint would be the rush at the end to close this "chapter* as there was an opportunity for drama. I look forward to the next one.

Developments

I have a hard time finding something I don't like about Daniel Schinhofen's books. One of the few authors to move me emotionally. That said, Assembly's Folly will reach inside you and play with your emotions.

Excellent book

What a damn good book. I’m just sad that this might be the last book in the series. The action was there. I did t feel like the book rushed. From start to finish I was on the edge thinking about what was next.

Kickin it nu school.

This was a pretty cool episode. Cut and dry accomplishments in the plot, nothing surprising. Could have used a bit more mecha, flesh out a few more battles or tech. Still an enjoyable read and welcome addition to a great series.

Amazing series, perfect balance of action and spice!

Can't wait for the next book. Looking forward to seeing Maker and Zander change the universe. Wonder if Maker can do anything about the pilots being sterile when she changes everyone's AI?
