Entschuldigung?
Veronika Kane is the monster-loving alter-ego of USA Today Bestselling Author Caroline Lee. One of Caroline's favorite genres to read is SciFi Romance, which led her to monster romance. When she discovered it was possible to set big, buff, delicious monsters in contemporary cozy small towns, she was sold. And that's how she ended up with a new pen name and a new series.
Welcome to the town of Eastshore Isle, the only beach town on the east coast experiencing negative population growth. You know who's going to help save the town? That's right; super-sexy, laugh-out-loud orcs.
My Orc Pen Pal by Veronika Kane Mated to the Monster series by multiple authors. Season 3. Connected to the Eastshore Isle series. Contemporary paranormal romance novella. Dual first person POV. Cinnamon hero. Can be read as a stand-alone. Rosemary Young joined the online MonsterSmash to learn more about Orcs since more are moving to Eastshore Isle. Her conversations with Akhmim become the highlight of her day with entertaining banter and more. He surprises her with the news that he’s one of the orcs moving to Eastshore and she reluctantly agrees to a date. Akhmim is sure that Ro is his mate but that’s too much for her. Sure, some sexy times are fine but commitment or claiming? No, not for her. But he’s persuasive, treating her with care and making the decisions all hers. She agrees to three dates. And those dates are way more than she expected.
Spicy, small town romance with low angst and plenty of humor. Akhmim is such a sweetie. He’s prepared to do whatever necessary to make Ro happy. And it’s hot!
Cute pen pal to lovers story. I thought Ro was a little too jaded and oblivious about love considering there didn't appear to be any backstory of terrible ex's or unhappy parents. Her mind jumped to weird places when the word Mate was thrown about considering the context, but I did like that she got a bit huffy about being claimed. Lol. Akhmim was a sweet guy, and I thought he was wonderfully patient. It would have been nice to see him working around his own schedule or showing more of what he did rather than always appear at Ro's beck and call. I assume they both work similar hours though...so it wasn't a huge issue. I guess it would have just been nice to see what else he did with his time. We get a lot of Ro's life, but not Akhmim's, outside of his living situation.
I’m always down for more Eastshore Isle, so this was amazing!!
I loved meeting this new group of 4 orcs who have migrated to the Isle after being welcomed by Daddy (erm, I mean Sakkara). I can already see the dynamics playing out and how each one is going to be mated off over 4 ADDITIONAL BOOKS starting with this one! I kinda have this theory that Roni is going to write like a hundred of these books, or at least in this world (maybe branch out for Eastshore as well to another town in the same world), and you bet your bottom I’m going to gobble each one up like the delicious treats they are!
Ok, so let’s get into why this one was so great. First of all, PEN PALS! I love the pen pals trope because it establishes this base relationship before the couple even gets to meet, which just advances the whole relationship from the get go. Brownie points for that, especially since I think this is the shortest book in the series to date, so stuff needed to start STAT!
Speaking of which, I am a short chapter whore, short book mongrel, so the fact that I could read this in like an hour was FANTASTIC! I didn’t want to put it down, but I also didn’t HAVE to because of it’s length. WIN-WIN!
I loved that Ro got her story finally! We’ve seen her in the background of the last couple books and I loved getting to know her as the FMC. I also really loved that she was the only (or one of the only?) FMCs who was like, “Wait, what? You can’t just CLAIM ME!”. I loved that going into this friendship/relationship/situationship she was not someone who believed in true love, so it’s no surprise to me she didn’t want to be claimed nor that she didn’t get the appeal of it. I loved seeing this different type of FMC and found it humorous to watch her walls fall just as much as her panties…oops I went there!
And Akhmim! I loved how much of a gentleman he was! When Ro was clearly not ready and wanted to stall them getting together, he took such a sweet approach of giving her 3 dates to send him away, as well as not pushing (or letting her push herself) too far when she wasn’t ready. I loved the 3 dates thing, especially when it blurred into the “Well, this time doesn’t really count because I just wanted to hang out” territory!
Of course, the spice was fantastic and the heart was on point, like always in this series!
Thank you to Veronika Kane for the opportunity to read this book. The thoughts and opinions expressed above are honest and my own.
Short, cute, and steamy! Rosemary and Akhmim are perfect for each other, but Ro is seriously risk averse. She’s watched some of her friends meet and mate the hunky orcs who’ve settled in her hometown, but she’s certain all she needs is a good time, not a lifetime. Her pen pal Akhmim, however? He wants all of her.
Loved the tension, loved the super spicy bits, and Ro’s stonewalling was funny in the face of Akhmim’s complete certainty that she’s it for him based on their correspondence before they met face to face.
I was fortunate to have received an advance reader copy from the author, and I’m pleased to share my honest review.
In this super cute and steamy return to Eastshore, Ro finally meets her Mate—uh, match! After communicating as email pen pals for months and never thinking they’d meet in real life, Ro’s dream orc shows up on her doorstep. Akhmim is part of a group of orcs new to Eastshore, and he’s anxious to claim the female he’s realized is his Fated Mate. After an explosive first night together, Ro wants to slow down because she isn’t sure she’s ready for forever. Will Akhmim convince Ro they’re meant to be in the three dates she grants him? You’ll have to read and find out!
Tropes: Fated Mates, size difference, friends to lovers, small town, quasi-epistolary
I received an early version of this book and am leaving my voluntary review.
This novella just didnt quite make it. Spoilers * * * * These books are all cute, but they are already right on the line of being too short to truly enjoy. Right as you get into it, it ends. This one is even shorter though. Ro is friends with Maya and Menmon. Yet she had no idea about orc mating, or what it would mean if he said "XYZ". It just seemed like for such an intelligent woman, she didnt know things she absolutely should have known.
While this definitely wasn't nearly my favorite, it was fine. I dont hold it against the others in the series, and I will keep reading.
Uhhhhh this didn’t do it for me. I wanted more set up and pen-palism. To read some emails would have been nice. The story is cute from there seeing their dates and how they interact with each other, but then it dies. Rosemary just flips a switch and all the sudden everything is fixed. I feel like it was missing content and it didn’t always flow very well.
A silly premise, but with deceptively rich worldbuilding- so much so that I honestly feel like it was in a bit over its head.
Genuinely, I think it's in large part the split perspectives that hurt this one. In such a short format, I'd much rather have spent what little time there was getting to know one character fully, rather than both halfway, in fits and starts.
I had to come back and edit this review because too many dnf’s for me this week making me rude when I need to try to remember this is someone’s effort and that deserves a modicum of respect. Most of the time. ——— First time reading this author. It started well, until the morning after their first date.
SHE initiates, which is great! He gives her 2-3 orgasms (he insists on pleasuring her first), that lasts into the morning after (not clear on whether she reciprocated, but ok, great!)…
then she has to get up and pee, which was fine, realistic for morning stuff, ya know?
So by now, he’s been pleasuring her all night and is all horny (understandable), and she just walks out of the bathroom and is like, right ok well… deuces! 👋 gotta go dress in my Jammie’s and grade papers so move along now.
He was like oh I guess sexy times are over… ok.. no prob. 🥹Even though he was left with his dick in his hand.
Literally.
O_o
She proceeds to flip out on him about the mate issue. This fmc is not just baffling for not knowing about orc mating habits when her friends are mated to orcs already, but she also pivoted selfishly and abruptly.
I can only speak for myself, but I have a threshold of the maximum level of cunty behavior I’m willing to tolerate in either mc’s before I nope out. If the character slides past naive, past confused or misunderstanding and straight into asshole territory (towards the other mc), I no longer trust the book to turn itself around after that.
Actually, I think she lost me earlier than that, while at the restaurant the fmc says the word ‘amazeballs’.

This cute, cozy, small-town novella is part of two series. It takes place after Book 7, My (Secret) Orc Boss, in Veronika Kane's Eastshore Isle series and is part of the multi-author series Mated to the Monster Season Three. While it stands on its own, it fits best as Book 7.5 in the Eastshore Isle reading order.
Rosemary, a dedicated teacher, has been exchanging heartfelt emails with the charming Akhmin, an orc who recently relocated to the island town of Eastshore. Their long-distance penpal connection has blossomed into something more—and when they finally meet in person, sparks fly, and so do a few warning bells. Akhmin comes on a little strong but is enthusiastic and determined to win Rosemary over.
This cozy, sweet, humorous, and lightly spicy small-town monster romance novella is a fun, quick read. I'm looking forward to My Orc Nanny, scheduled to be released in May 2025.
Spice: 4/5 Plot: 4/5 Writing: 4/5 My Enjoyment: 4/5
4.5 stars. Ro, the female human lead, has been exchanging emails with Akhmim, the male orc lead, and his desire to meet her was the reason behind his relocation to her island. Now he’s determined to meet her because he thinks she’s his fated mate. But Ro is sure that’s not how relationships work, so Akhmim negotiates for three dates to convince her otherwise…
This novella is dual POV, well written, and a sweet and steamy, contemporary fantasy, fated mates, small town romance. I enjoyed Akhmim’s devotion and certainty, as well as appreciating his willingness to give Ro time to adjust to the idea of him. I empathised with Ro’s concerns about romantic love and enjoyed seeing her perspective change. I enjoyed the building intimacy between the characters. I would have enjoyed this story being a bit longer/more detailed but it is complete with a cute HEA, which makes me happy.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.
I love the Eastshore community and the orcs there. This new group is just as wonderful. In this one we meet Akhmim and Rosemary. Rosemary isn’t sure she believes in love. Akhmim is certain she is his fated mate. I loved Akhmim, he was so cute and precious. He knew Rosemary was his mate and I loved the dates he planned, they were so perfect for him and her. Rosemary was such a sweetheart and I loved her family. It was so wonderful to see a big welcoming family who just wanted their daughter to be happy. Fantastic writing. Amazing characters. And the town of Eastshore keeps getting more and more wonderful.
I did receive an ARC and this is my honest opinion.
I did not like ro, first of all I don’t want to say it’s weird how she reacted to her pen pal, but it was. Like seriously where did u think this was going? Like they have obvious chemistry but ro is brushing it off to a good time(spicy stuff included) and basically telling him to politely fuck off.. and it’s like girl... and she acts like she doesn’t believe in love and she has parents who’ve been happily married for 35 years so why is she acting so cynical when the perfect boyfriend is right there. Also negative points for that hideous orc on the cover, it reminds me of creepy ass talking Tom
“Best. Pen pal. Ever.”! Rosemary, a teacher, learned a few home truths in this splendid, fast moving, sensationally hot story, after meeting her pen pal, Akhmim. What totally captivated my attention and gave me so much enjoyment though, was his undying certainty that she was his mate - throughout this book. I mean, really, isn't that every girl's wish? Having just finished reading an early copy of this brand new story, all I can say is, "More, please!".
Akhmim is down bad. The epitome of "he falls first and harder." He literally moved across the country for a chance to meet Rosemary.
Rosemary, on the other hand, isn't really a believer in love. But, Akhmim is hot... and it's just one date, right?
I love all the Eastshore orcs, but Akhmim is something special. He's a little nerdy, a little inexperienced, and just completely in love with Ro. He's ready to prove himself as her Mate.
I absolutely loved it! I'm really happy that the author introduced more orcs into Eastshore Isle to share their story. I just know they're going to win someone's heart soon!
I liked the male main character, Akhim. He and the female main character clearly were perfect for each other, but she had difficulty accepting the concept of a mate bond. However, he was so earnest and patient. His persistence really paid off when she finally recognized and accepted him as her mate.
Another amazing addition to the Orcs of East Shore. It's nice to see the new orcs on the island are going to find their mates here as well. Akhmim and Rosemary are the definition of a modern day couple. They meet on-line and when the opportunity strikes that they can meet in person they take a chance. The first date goes well but Rosemary has her doubts about love. Will Akhmim be able to change her mind and make her believe in true love and everything having a mate can offer.
Rosemary (or Ro as she likes to be called) was curious about orcs so she decided to sign up to be a pen pal to an orc named Akhmim. Little did she know that she would meet the handsome orc and become smitten with him. She also didn't know that Akhmim would claim she is his mate. He has three dates to convince Ro that she is his and he is hers. This story has steamy romance, lots of fun times and a happy ending.
Ro absolutely does not believe in true love. Akhmin has arrived on Eastshore to test her beliefs. They had been pen pals for months and have an easy banter and have shared stories of their lives. Akhmin gets the opportunity to move to Eastshore so he jumps at the chance to come and meet his pen pal. Akhmin has is work set out for him when he realizes Ro is his mate. He gets Ro to agree to 3 dates to prove himself to her – hopefully he’ll be able to! I wish Eastshore was real!
This is another good book about the Orcs and humans on Eastshore Isle. It is probably one of the steamiest in the batch. It is a short, fast read and you can probably finish it in one setting. I enjoyed the ability to read this book early and would recommend it and all of the other books in the series.
Okay I am a bit picky about orcs being a LOTR fan... But this one.... Oh my goodness!!!! Perfection!!! I loved it! It made me laugh and giggle with the nerdy stuff and swoon at the spicy scenes! I really loved it! I read the whole book tonight because I couldn't put it down! Just the best!!!!
This story was the ooey gooey sweetness that we can expect from Eastshore Isle. This one starts off with one hell of a first date. The next morning wasn't so steaming. Our MMC has some work to do to convince Ro that he isn't a caveman and Fate really knows what she is doing. We get glimpses of our newest orcs and I can't wait to see what comes next from this beautiful community
I loved visiting Eastshore Isle again. Although I felt like knocking some sense into Ro. I've read all the other books in the series and it was great running into some old friends. I realize that she did not know much of Orc culture, but she had several friends to ask. They worked out their differences and got their HEA.
FMC becomes pen pals with MMC on MonsterSmash. They correspond for several months. Then he wants to meet, and they super connect, but she kind of freaks out. She agrees to three dates so he can woo her... I love how they get to know each other better. And of course, there is an HEA.
🔸️A quick, fun reading featuring determined male and very reluctant lady. The story is juicy, cozy and quite comforting. Romance is on fast paced side. 🔸️This installment is much shorter from other books from Eastshore Isle series and I had a problem to truly connect with main characters.
Another amazing Eastshore Isle story! No real drama or angst just a wonderful, romantic, feel good story. I love them and I am so happy there are going to be more!
Veronica Kane never disappoints! All of the Eastshore Isle romances are exceptionally well written and honestly, I’d love to fall for an Orc of my own. Read these stories, seriously you’re going to love them!!
This is such a cute book! I absolutely love friends to lovers and small town romance! The vibes were so cozy and perfect for a rainy day - plus those steamy scenes will keep you warm at night! Really great book!
This is truly a feel good book, just a little tension to help the story build as it needed and the right amount of transition time to make it good for a shorter Book. I will probably be reading again multiple times in the future.
