Many tools and techniques for coaching in this book. It's great, it's practical, it's useful.
It's a book that you might not read in one go but you'd go back into multiple times, especially if you are coaching, so that you can find an alternative model to use or consider a different approach to coaching.
Having the right tool to a task often helps us more than dexterity and wit. This is the reason we value toolboxes with lots of tools for our trade. Bob Bates's book is such a toolbox. Full of tools for various coaching situations, the book can help us review coaching models, recall memories of familiar models, and find new inspiration. Each description starts with a use case, a summary of theory, and a short guide for application. If you use the book the right way, it can be your treasure box. Do not expect to learn new theory and models, though. Two pages per model cannot give you the depth needed for learning. If you are familiar with underpinning theory, these summaries are friendly reminders. If you find a model you are not familiar with, this book can be a source of ideas and references but not a full guide and training material which is not its purpose.
My experience with this book was very good. My motives for reading this book were mainly derived from the fact that in my business education program, I started following a course that offered orientation into the activities of a coach. I demanded from myself to read a relevant book in supplement to the course.
I consider this book to be extremely useful. I was well able to grasp each of the models explained in the book, and each of them contains explanation for application of the model. Due to that, I was even able to implement some of the models through my course, which validates for me that every coach out there should have this book.
Interesting summary of a lot of things which most managers *should* already know. however, these gems are really well structured into different sections, depending on what depth of learning you want to achieve, and I found this useful. I also found useful the explanation of the theory, with (every time) an additional section on 'how to apply' the theory in your everyday management practice. In short, a useful guide to have around. I am using it to structure ho I develop workshops to coach my own staff.
