Don't Tell Me How It Ends: A Novel

Rate this book
A floundering twenty-something, who’s sworn off romance finds herself roped into her meddling sister’s matchmaking business—in this sparkling debut rom-com that asks: can we protect ourselves while falling in love?

Kaia Harper may not have a plan for her life, but she knows what she won't be doing—falling for somebody's dusty son, promising forever. She'd rather spend the summer after college having disappointing one-night stands and watching crime show reruns. At least she won’t be caught off guard since she already knows how all those stories end.

But when her very pregnant and newly single sister calls for help, Kaia reroutes, stumbling back home to suburban Connecticut…and into the business plan of her sister's new matchmaking company. Kaia’s views on love remain as bleak as her career prospects, but if becoming the inaugural client can distract her from existential questions like "What am I even doing with my life?", Kaia will suffer through a few bad dates and call it a favor.

When Ro Jackson finds Kaia stalled on the side of the road, he isn’t put off by her attitude. His steady disposition is Kaia’s opposite and makes him exactly what she needs—a friend in town who can handle her just as she is. But as Ro talks Kaia through a summer of failed matches, she finds herself drawn to more than just his poetic outlook and friendship.

Kaia hadn’t seen this one coming, but as she and Ro grow closer, she’ll have to decide what’s more important: needing to know the end of every story, or jumping into the unknown.

Hey all! I'm SO glad you're here, and even more excited for you to meet these characters I've been keeping to myself for too long. I've tried to create a world here that feels FRESH, LAYERED, RELATABLE, and REAL, and I really hope you enjoy the time you spend in it. As a lifelong romcom fan, I hope my debut novel gives you that true romcom experience we all know and love.

Thanks so much for reading and reviewing!

I have found a new author to be obsessed with and this is her debut! I am beyond impressed and in love with this book. Adrienne Thurman is an auto-read author for me now.

Kaia is one of my favorite FMCs of all time. She is so real and messy. I love to see a flawed woman who is also strong and independent but layered and complex. Kaia is not one thing and she is also not underdeveloped or overwritten. Every action of hers makes sense for her character.

And Ro. Oh sweet, hot, steady Ro. What a man. It was fun to read a book that felt true to real time. No fake dating schemes. No marriage of convenience. Just two people who start as strangers, develop a friendship, and fall in love. Again, they are messy but they are real.

And Adrienne is up there for me with Rosie Danan, Betty Corrello, and Cat Sebastian in terms of authors who are incredibly witty and exacting with their writing. The jokes are funny and specific to the character in a way that a seasoned stand-up comedian or comedy writer would think. And there is a quote about how grace is the only thing we can control so why not give ourselves that and it will stick with me for a long time. That doesn’t happen often for me with books and it is such a gift.

Towards the end, there was one too many times that Kaia was avoidant (though I completely understood it) and one too many speeches. And I would kill for an epilogue but even still, I completely loved this book and will scream from the rooftops about it.

You will probably like this book if you like:
🧡 Strangers to friends to lovers
🧡 Matchmaking
🧡 He’s an artist
🧡 Opposites attract
🧡 He falls first
🧡 Complicated family dynamics
🧡 Sisterly love

I always like to give debut novels grace. This is their first time out here. I’m not expecting a masterpiece. But I /am/ expecting to like the story I carved out time to read.

Unfortunately, I did not like this one.

This book is as long as it is because the FMC, Kaia, is as insufferable as she is.

Kaia spends the vast majority of the book just being an asshole to any and everybody in the name of sticking it to the patriarchy and because her dad wasn’t around.

Which—okay. Why is she making it everybody else’s problem? Especially when people are just trying to help her out and in two seconds flat, she’ll fire off a rude retort. It’s exhausting.

I feel like she should skip the relationship and just go to therapy.

“How do you keep believing in me when I give you nothing to hold on to?”

I said the said thing, girl. Several times.

“You should be with someone much better than me.”

You won’t get any pushback from me, babe. I agree. Wholeheartedly, in fact.

I think Ro, the MMC, is actually too mature for her. And—potentially, has something wrong with him because I fail to see what he sees in her. She spent the first half of the novel insulting him, then spent the last half of the novel dismissing him. Unless he’s like a secret masochist, I really don’t see what he keeps chasing her for.

this is the author’s debut in the romance genre, and it’s a genuinely promising start. i enjoyed this book, especially for how grounded and real it felt.

Kaia was the highlight for me a because of how raw and flawed she was depicted. her life is turned upside down, and we follow her as she tries to regain some balance while navigating her love life through a series of dates.

i also appreciated the quiet strength of her sister’s support; their dynamic felt sincere and comforting. the mmc was introduced through genuinely funny meet-cutes, and i loved how their relationship unfolded with care, moving from strangers to something deeper. Kaia’s hesitation toward him felt justified because i truly believe it was shaped by her past.

the slow burn was very present, almost frustrating at times, but it ultimately served the emotional build-up. even if the ending felt slightly rushed, kia’s growth and the way her character was portrayed made the story worthwhile.e

many thanks to the publisher for the eARC in exchange for an honest review

This was such a precious romance. Our FMC, Kaia, is a fierce and independent woman, and our MMC, Ro, is the ultimate golden retriever man—supportive, charming, and loved by everyone he meets. Their story unfolds as a slow friends-to-lovers burn, and honestly, there were moments I just wanted to shove their lips together to move things along, but in the end, the journey was exactly what they both needed.

I really loved how Kaia’s arc showed her learning that even when you don’t need help, it can still be beautiful to accept it when it’s freely and lovingly offered.

What made this book so special, though, was how it celebrated more than just romantic love. It shined just as brightly on the love between best friends, the love between a mother and her daughters, and that incomparable bond between sisters. It was a gentle reminder to cherish all the different forms of love in your life.

Fiercely independent, strong women deserve golden retriever lovers to take care of them, even when they don’t ask for it.

This book is real, raw, and relatable. It’s messy (complimentary) and feels like you’re along for a ride with your best friend.

I love the strong female friendships, and sister relationship dynamics in this one!

Whats to love…
- back cat x golden retriever vibes (imho)
- Single POV
- slow burn
- friends to lovers
- he falls first
- sisterly bonds
- grade a banter

What might not work for some…
- I do not mind a single pov romance book at all, but occasionally there comes along one that just feels like it would have hit harder as a dual pov. This one is that rare case for me. We get a lot of the FMCs interest/attraction towards the mmc and not nearly enough of the mmcs thoughts/attraction. I wanted to be in his head getting to experience how down bad he was.

2.5 star rounded up. Don’t Tell Me How It Ends is one of those books where I admired what the author was trying to do more than I actually enjoyed reading it.

Kaia is a deeply pessimistic, commitment-averse twenty-something who insists she doesn’t believe in love—and for a while, she really tested my patience. Her cynicism can feel exhausting, especially early on, and I went back and forth between empathizing with her fear of the future and wanting her to stop self-sabotaging for five minutes. That said, once you peel back the layers, it’s clear she’s carrying a lot of hurt, and watching her slowly confront that was satisfying… just slower than I wanted.

The sibling relationship was a highlight. Kaia and her sister felt real in that messy, loving, sometimes frustrating way that only family can. I honestly found myself more invested in their dynamic—and the matchmaking business—than in the romance itself.

Ro is kind, patient, and steady, but at times he felt like he existed more to absorb Kaia’s emotional whiplash than to be a fully realized character. Their relationship had tender moments, but I struggled to fully root for them, especially when the imbalance in effort became impossible to ignore.

The writing is solid and thoughtful, and the themes of uncertainty, post-grad limbo, and fear of the unknown will definitely resonate with the right reader. For me, though, the pacing and character dynamics kept this from fully landing.

Not a bad book—just one that didn’t quite win me over.

(Rounded up for goodreads!)

A fresh, witty and emotional romance that feels perfectly rooted in modern day womanhood.

I had such a good time reading this tension filled, swoony romance that leans into the realm of a women’s fiction novel with Kaia, her sister and her mother at the heart of the story.

If you’re looking for a romance that takes a step outside of the typical box, this is it. Don’t Tell Me How This Ends takes a handful of imperfect characters and allows them to remain so deeply, yet believably and relateably imperfect, even as they learn and grow throughout the book.

The characters were amazing:
- I really resonated with main character Kaia. While reading her experiences, her outlooks and her struggles I kept thinking: I know so many people who would read this understand Kaia on a personal level like I do.
- Then enter: Ro. Someone who may or may not be a little bit more than meets the eye kind of guy. I loved Ro, but what I loved most what that he didn’t steal Kaia’s shine. So often I read a romance and get a little “meh” about the perfect, here to save the day MMC that takes up every single thought the FMC has. This was not that and what a breath of fresh air it was. Ro has his own story, his own life, and even.. his own conflicts with Kaia.

I loved the set up of the plot
- A matchmaking sister? As an older sister, this sounds like a dream job! A little bit of sibling torture, a little bit of “I know best” - perfect!

The romance was so good!
- I loved the tension between these two, the banter was even better. I loved when they hit their climax and it was the something like the opposite of a swoony moment. They felt real, this felt realistic.

With an overall focus on family, friendship, self-discovery and growth, healing wounds, and falling in love - this was such a meaningful read. Of course you add the cherries on top (the banter, the tension, the arguments, the sarcasm, the fails, the lessons and more)

My only two notes: are

1. The end went so fast. I’d pay money for an epilogue though I do appreciate that the ending fit the character.
2. I think some of the conversations between some characters could be a little long winded and repetitive at times.

Overall, one of my favorite romances this year! Highly recommend.

Don’t tell me how this ends is a slow burn summertime romance about Kaia, a recent grad going going through this weird transitional period of life and who doesn’t believe in love. She returns to her small hometown to help out her very pregnant, matchmaking sister and her lovesick mom. It’s clear Kaia is lowkey terrified of love, so her sister insists on setting her up on three blind dates. And through out all this she meets Ro, the cutest and sweetest “tow truck guy” you could ever know 🥰 And what starts as friendship slowly grows into something Kaia is seriously not prepared for 😅

I liked Kaia and Ro’s situationship so much. I thought their lil friends to lovers trope was really well done. Ro was so sweet! 🙂‍↕️💕🙌🏾 Literally the perfect golden retriever MMC. And the way he never wavered with Kaia. He was such a good friend to her and you could just feel the yearning through every interaction they had.

Kaia was frustrating tho tbh. Like I completely understood all her hesitations but at some points it really was like damn girl please stop being scared and let this sweet man into your life!!! It WILL be okay!!! 😮‍💨🤦🏽‍♀️ But thankfully she does eventually figure it out and by the end you do feel proud of her for it 🫶🏽

WOW-- WOW-- WOW!! FIVE STARS BABY!!

From the absolute start this book had me hooked!! The author's voice was sooo refreshing! She remind me of Bolu Babalola (Honey & Spice Author)... This story was so relatable. Kaia's guarded nature and Ro's artistic honest personality balancing each other out made so much sense. Them helping each other heal was actually very therapeutic for me. I was Kaia at one point in time.

I do think I will see some reviews about the FMC choices in this book, but I believe the authors story is theirs. How they want their characters to grow, fail, or thrive is up to them. Ro and Kaia were just sooo relatable!! I loved every part of it. The problems they faced were so real. I myself want Ro Jackson!! I was vividly picturing him in my head. He has topped my book boyfriend list!!

The end of the book included a preview of book 2 about Zola, and I even went on to read that hoping for snippets about future Ro and Kaia!

4.5 stars rounded up - let me just say, I’m nothing if not nosy and have read some of the negative reviews and I !!! Have !!! Thoughts lol

Kicking things off - I’m the biggest fan of these two. Kaia as her own messy, complicated person and Ro, the steady, constant and kind man that she is. My god😭😭

I loved being inside Kaia’s brain. She made me scream, she made me LAUGH, and I mean a LOT like all of her early interactions with Ro truly made me crack up.

I thoroughly appreciate her being messy and avoidant and a bit damaged because holy h*ll is that realistic. Now did she also make me scream in frustration a few times? 1000% yes. But I think that’s just LIFE and she’s figuring everything out, and I think she deserves the grace to do so.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I do have to say - a common theme seems to be that she’s angry/broody and that Ro is doing a lot of heavy lifting. And being honest, that is true. My issue with this is that HOW many times do we see angsty or broody men in romance and the world ROOTS for them. And gives them grace and compassion. There are so many grumpy men in romance and nobody blinks - but when it’s a woman, it’s received SO differently and I really want folks to sit with that.

I love Kaia and Ro. Their love isn’t perfect. And she is a little rough around the edges. But ffs, that man is RIGHT where he wants to be.

The only and I mean ONLY note I have for this is that I wish my baby Kaia would’ve gone to therapy - even if it was something that she brought up and we knew she was going to do after this story ends, because she DOES need to talk to someone. But she can also be shown kindness AS she works on herself.

I also loved watching her navigate her early 20s, changing friendship dynamics, uncertainty about her future - like YES the romance but I think Kaia’s story was also so much more than that, idk.

Kaia and Ro truther for life lmao but most importantly, Kaia!!! Can’t wait to read this author’s next book!!!

a lot to like about this book!! i loved following a grumpy-ish main character and seeing her fall in love and just the journey throughout the story, absolutely LOVED the sibling relationship and the different dynamics of the characters. the writing was bingeable and all, but honestly the story just didn't fully click with me. idk if it was the pacing, or if maybe i wasn't as attached to the characters as i initially thought, but it didn't get me as much as i thought it was going to. overall though, a solid read!!

4.75 ✨ I freaking loved this book. I was already enticed by the synopsis, but I really really loved this book. This is a slow burn friends to lovers story and for me the build up is so worth the wait. This story is told from the perspective of Kaia who is kind of directionless in life and is super avoidant when it comes to love. She does not see the point what-so-ever. Her sister is a professional match maker who takes the opportunity to set her up on dates. But she may not even need the services when our loveable MMC, Ro enters comes in the picture.

This story is so cute. I love the matchmaker trope of it all with her sister trying to set her up on dates, when the love of your life is clearly right in your face. Kaia and Ro were so cute. I loved seeing their friendship build up over time with the obvious yearning for each other that Kaia was desperately trying to avoid. The tension was great to me.

Kaia will be a character that people deem to be "unlikable", but once we learn more about her and why she thinks the way she does, it was easier to root for her regardless. I won't sit here and say she didn't frustrate me though, because she definitely did LOL.

Overall I thought this was a really great debut and I had a great time reading this!

Don’t Tell Me How It Ends is a refreshingly real, modern-day matchmaking romance that doesn’t shy away from the messy truth of dating in the app era.

Kaia Harper is addicted to dating apps. Not for love, but for the quick hits of attention and distraction they provide. Relationship-averse and a little lost, she moves back home with her mother and her pregnant sister, Zo. Zo, ever the optimist, launches a matchmaking company and quickly decides Kaia will be her perfect first client. The setup is ripe for both comedy and heartbreak as Kaia is pushed through a carousel of dates. Some disastrous (my god the first date was the worst), some hopeful, while trying to figure out what she actually wants.

Then comes Ro. A grounded, quietly intense artist who slips into Kaia’s life and starts to challenge her cynicism about love. Their connection builds slowly, tenderly, but also turbulently. Kaia runs hot and cold, and the emotional push-pull might be frustrating for readers.

The fights in this book are gnarly (there's a climax scene and you'll know it when you read it). It's soul baring gnarly, it’s messy, it’s loud, it’s full on right there smacking you in the face. But that's what I really enjoyed about this book. I feel like we get a sanitized version of the dating scene in romance novels these days that this felt like a breath of fresh air.

My only gripe? No epilogue! After investing so deeply in Kaia and Ro, I was dying for just a glimpse of what comes next.

Adding on a quote:

This life is long baby. You're gonna fall backward and start over more times than you ever imagined. And the only thing that changes each time is how quickly you learn to give yourself the grace to do it.

Content Thoughts:

From the moment I received the email offering me an ARC of this book, I was intrigued. The cover alone made me drop everything and start reading immediately, and once I did, I was completely hooked. The writing pulled me in right away, and I could not put the book down. Within a few hours, I was already halfway through, giggling, laughing out loud, and kicking my feet.

The story is structured in a way that feels natural and believable. I really loved the banter between the main characters, as well as the overall plot.

One of the standout elements for me was the FMC’s family dynamic. The lessons learned by the women in this family are challenging, emotional, and very real for so many people. The FMC’s mindset at the beginning of the story was also relatable to me in certain ways, which made her growth even more meaningful.

I especially appreciated that the author did not rush conversations by cutting dialogue short. Scenes were allowed to fully play out, giving us a chance to see complete interactions and the opportunity to truly get to know the characters and sit with their emotions.

That said, I did find myself wishing we could have seen more of the challenges the MMC dealt with in his own life. At the same time, I am glad this was not a dual POV story, as staying solely in the FMC’s perspective allowed the reader to fully experience her confusion and emotional journey alongside her.

I also would have liked a bit more setup around the matchmaking business, though I recognize that adding too much there could have slowed the pacing, so this is more of a personal preference than a major critique.

This was an engaging, heartfelt read that kept me turning pages and left me eager to pick up more books by this author.

I absolutely loved this book! I could not put it down once I started it and finished it in a couple of days. The FMC Kaia is a fiercely independent woman and the MMC Ro is the definition of a golden retriever man. Kaia was very relatable in her struggles with relationships, and I loved her character growth throughout the story.

I think the best part of the book was that it didn't only focus on the romantic relationship, but also showed the love between friends and family. It shows that our relationships with our friends and family is just as important.

This book is amazing! So addicting that I had to stay up way past my bedtime to finish. When I got to the end and there was no epilogue, I said out loud, “Are you serious?!” But then came the preview chapter for the author’s next book, which is set in the same world as this, and I could relax. I went into this expecting a bookish story because of the title, but it’s actually a matchmaking trope—and that ended up being such a fun surprise.

I’ll admit I usually prefer a soft “lover girl” FMC, but this one was so sharp and funny that she completely won me over. Her voice carried the story, and I found myself laughing a lot. The MMC was also wonderful—patient, charming, and exactly the kind of balance the story needed.

One thing I especially appreciated was how much the book centered the FMC’s relationships with her mom and sister. The family dynamic felt warm and real, and it was refreshing that the story didn’t revolve entirely around men. I really enjoyed this ARC. “But here, with Ro, not knowing doesn’t feel like something to run from. It’s a promise I want to run toward. A promise that there’s so much still to come. I’d stand with Ro in this not knowing, forever, if I could. I’ll stand with him now, in our beginning.”

This was so much more than a romance book. This book was about finding one’s self while also getting the chance to find love along the way. I love and will always cherish this book, not only for its characters but for everything it brought to the table for me. Kaia and Ro and my babies, no, all these characters are my babies, my family even. This was completely and utterly perfect!! A literal cinematic masterpiece. This book wasn’t simply words on a page but instead a movie being played in my head. My very own romcom. God I just LOVE love!!! Now where can I find my own Ro Jackson?

Well, this book tried and failed to be engaging or romantic. Another new release letdown. I knew after the first two chapters that this would not be a highly rated book for me, but I wanted to give this author a chance to change my mind. I could see what she was trying to do, but the execution was terrible. And so was Kaia. Seriously, there’s unlikable, and then there’s Kaia. So unfunny. So unpleasant. Kaia’s mom annoyed me, and so did her sister, Zola.

How many times can an author remind the reader that a character is pregnant? The limit does not exist. Almost every single time Zola was mentioned, so was the fact that she was pregnant or a mention of her pregnant belly. It drove me insane. No chemistry to be found between Kaia and Ro, mostly because Kaia was unbearable. Kaia is the type of character who makes you reflect on everything she thinks or says, just so you can eliminate those traits from your own personality.

There is not a single thing I didn't love in this book. The families, the main characters, the plot; the whole story was great. The way that Ro cares for Kaia, even as she fights him on it, is next level. I think it's safe to say that Ro is my new favorite book boyfriend.
My favorite part of the book, though, may have been the references to art and music. The arts are truly universal and it was written in such a beautiful, connective way.
I expect this book may end up being in my top releases of the year.

I really enjoyed this! I love Kaia and Ro’s friendship and their banter. I really felt like a part Kaia’s close knit family. It was insightful seeing how each woman navigated their relationship with love and romance too. The characters were imperfect and real which made the story feel super natural. This is a such cute romance! I read it all in a day lol

Thank you to NetGalley & Penguin Random House for the invitation to read this eARC in exchange for my honest opinions.

When Kaia finds herself floundering in life, she leaves her college town and heads back home to be with her mother & pregnant sister. Kaia has a very bad attitude about relationships and men in general. Most of it stems from her father abandoning the family when she was younger. And now, she finds that her sister, who has been in what Kaia considers the "perfect" relationship, is also divorced. Her sister has a dating service and has Kaia go on a few dates to try and fix her attitude. After some of the dates, her attitude is quite warranted. However, in the meantime, there is one guy, Ro, who saved her on the side of the road breakdown that she is "softening" to a bit. Their banter is great, and I found myself rooting for them. I quite enjoyed this debut Rom-Com and was glad for the invitation to read it. If Rom-Com's are your thing, this one is set to release on April 14, 2026.

Kaia doesn’t believe in happy endings- she’s experienced too much heartbreak in her life for that. But when her newly single pregnant sister decides to strike it on her own as a professional matchmaker, she grudgingly agrees to help build the new business by allowing herself to get set up.

Back home and with no career prospects, Kaia endures a series of bad dates when she gets rescued from the roadside by an unbelievably hot tow truck driver Ro, who turns out to be an up and coming artist in New York City. Ro is back home too- on family matters, deferring his dreams in order to take care of his ailing father.

Kaia and Ro become friends, and then much more than that, but she pushes him away due to her distrust of romantic love. But Ro falls first and hard and he won’t give up on Kaia’s heart that easily.

With a relatable and steamy slow burn love story, a fun meet cute and a vibrant cast of characters, and featuring an emotional quarter life crisis, this debut will appeal to twentysomethings and those wanting to revisit that era of their lives.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for granting my request to read this e-ARC and provide my honest opinion.

Can I just give a shout-out to the cover designer, 'cos this cover is amazing!!! 😍 Now, to the plot... Kaia Harper, a floundering twenty-something year old who's sworn off romance, finds herself roped into her meddling sister's new matchmaking business.

We meet Kaia, and to be honest, I was instantly put off by her character – like, girll, we get it: you have severe daddy issues, you're scared of decisions and what to choose, you don't know what to do with your life and the degree you have, and you don't want love and relationships. You want casual... and then you accept being a client for your sister's matchmaking business, how!!! 🤦 If you know you don't want relationships.

I don't like the way they did my boy, Ro Jackson!! 😂 He was always begging, begging for crumbs of attention from Kaia, and she knew that and still would turnaround and blame Ro for ghosting her when he did nothing of such!!!

And regarding the matches, I knew that nothing would come out of it, but they did my boy dirty, and I don't like it 😭.

Overall, I didn't like Kaia, and I didn't like Kaia and Ro together; I couldn't root for them. Thank you for the e-ARC.

Thank you to Net Galley for giving me access to this ARC.

This was definitely a fun read. Kaia Harper moves home when her very pregnant sister’s life begins to unravel. Being unsure of her own path, Kaia, takes the opportunity to help out at home. As she surrounds herself in her hometown, she realizes just how much things have changed and how bleak her love life is. With that in mind, she helps her sister with her matchmaking business not expecting to be her first customer. But is love in the cards for her?

When I first started reading this book I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about Kaia. She felt very pessimistic but as you get to know her, you quickly realize she’s carrying so much hurt. Seeing her walls come down with Ro was so cathartic to see. Ngl, I was mad at her sometimes but she really came into her own.

I loved being able to see the bond with her sister grow. There was so much realness and love within their relationship. I was so excited to see her sister is the main focus of the next book. I do kinda wish we had a bigger moment with the mom, but overall the book was well written. I’m excited to see where this series goes.
