The Battle of Death Canyon was absolutely impressive. It was a massive showdown: Rowoon and Breck’s alliance, aided by the Whale and Tiger tribes, going up against the Bear and Flame Dwarf forces. Despite being heavily outnumbered, Cale's side fought phenomenally. The stakes grew even higher when the half dragon arrived, forcing Cale to protect everyone without Raon's backup. Fortunately, they managed to defeat it.

However, the aftermath was brutal. Cale almost died because the severe imbalance of his ancient powers pushed his body to the brink of exploding 🥲 Thanks to Erhaven's support, Cale acquired a new ancient power to stabilize himself. Rebuilding his vessel caused him unimaginable agony, undoubtedly the most painful experience he has ever endured. Once recovered, Cale wreaked havoc on the Eastern Continent before heading to the Whipper Kingdom.

The battle scenes in this volume were incredibly intense and well written. Raon’s desperation to rush his first growth upon hearing that Cale was in danger completely touch my heart. That said, I have to admit I always get a little bored during the Eastern Continent arcs 😅 Still, it is always a joy to read about Cale's chaotic adventures with his found family! ☺

Epic Fantasy, Transmigration, Found Family, Adventure, Comedy, Dragons!
Chapters 240~280 of the web serialisation.
[ Rant time: I still don't get why Seven Seas need to limit the release to 4 volumes a year. The translation has almost the same quality as the fan translation that's been available online for years. Unlike their Danmei books, there isn't a single illustration other than the covers, not the endpapers, not even the chapter titles! At least give us a map!! What are you doing? You're not making any effort!
And I can't even protest by lowering the rating because this is my favourite lightnovel. Ever. 😭 ]

Thankfully, maps are available online (Thank you to the creator ❤️)

We ended the previous volume right as the battle with The indomitable Alliance at Death Canyon started. The enemy attempted to blow up the cliff sides to form a bridge and marche into the Brek Kingdom. Instead, they were greeted by a wall of dark-blue fire, courtesy of our mighty dragons. From there, the battle only keeps heating up: flying bears, half-blood dragon, whales fighting in the sky.. and Cale finally saying 'yes' when the scary stone asked his usual question "Are you trying to sacrifice yourself?" ... All while the great and mighty Raon Mir is unconscious.

This arc is a treat for the adrenaline junkies.

As things calm down a bit, Cale is reminded that unless he finds his missing water attribute in the next three days, he'll blow up. And so both Cale and Raon have to fight their personal battles to survive and get stronger.

Cale has finally resigned himself to work extremely hard now in order to guarantee a slacker life in his late twenties. Hopefully the next 7 years will be enough. Hence he started his plan to take down Arm on the Eastern Continent right as the Mogor Empire declared war. How you say? By looting them..

Amongst all these events and action, Cale's commitment and sense of responsibility towards the people around him, and the way that level of care is transforming everyone's character and fate remains one of my favourite aspects about this novel.

..He was pointing at Lark—or rather, at the bundle of blankets in Lark’s arms. The young dragon was still breathing heavily within. “You’re not my little bro. You’re just a human. That’s the dragon.”
The half-blood dragon’s eyes sparkled. He could feel the might of the vessel within that little blanket.
..
“His first growth phase, is it?” He cast another amplification spell, causing his voice to carry throughout the area, though his words were intended for Cale. “What a perfect time to kill him, no?”
..
When the corners of the mage’s lips curled even higher, Lark clutched Raon closer to his chest. The black dragon remained unconscious, his every breath labored.
“Lark,” said Cale, stepping in front of the young wolf. “From this moment on, you are to look at my back and my back only, no matter what.”
His eyes were locked on the half-blood dragon..

I am the adult here. I’m the guardian of these two kids. I chose to take them in, so I must accept full responsibility.
He needed the Scary Stone’s power.
“Are you trying to sacrifice yourself?”
At long last, Cale responded to its refrain. “Yes.”

A creature’s face was poking out of the bundle in Cale’s arms. Even with its eyes closed, its round, chubby features were quite cute—but that wasn’t the issue.
When Albert met Cale’s gaze again, Cale said matter-of-factly, “This is a dragon. He’s currently going through his first growth phase.”
“Pardon?”
“He’s six years old. His name is Raon Mir. It’s a nice name, don’t you think? I’m the one who came up with it.”
“You… What?”
Cale wasn’t finished just yet. Cradling Raon in one arm, he gestured to Erhaven with his free hand. “And this one is an ancient dragon—the oldest dragon on the Western Continent.”
Albert blinked a couple of times, utterly stupefied. Then he gave his head a light shake. Am I delirious with exhaustion? Is it because I didn’t sleep well for the past few days?
..
Albert faced the ancient dragon. Erhaven shrugged, regarding the crown prince with an aloof air. Speaking as if Albert was beneath him, he said, “Nice meeting you.”
The man Albert had always believed to be a bodyguard was actually a dragon. He couldn’t believe it—but Cale didn’t allow him any time to process. He still had quite a few things left to say.
“Oh, right. If things go sideways, I might explode three days from now. It’ll be fatal.”
“Huh?! What the f—”
“Goodness,” Erhaven murmured as the curse flowed from the crown prince’s lips. Albert shut his mouth and swept both hands over his face.
Looking wholly unbothered, Cale went on, “There’s an issue with my Ancient Powers. It’s under control for the time being thanks to a temporary measure, but it seems I only have three days left.”
Cale’s blasé attitude had Albert at a loss for words.

..Raon’s front paws were moving. Little by little, his stubby feet quivered and twitched before Vicross’s eyes.
The smell of blood sent the black dragon’s heart into overdrive. Thump, thump. He knew without a doubt that Cale was the one bleeding.
Raon was itching to open his eyes and see what was going on, but he was still far away, in another world.
....
This blood smells like my human. I need to save him!

Just as Rowoon and its allies are about to clash against the Indomitable Alliance at Death Canyon, Cale Henituse awakens to find the young dragon, Raon, has entered his first growth phase and fallen into a temporary coma. Now, Cale must lead Rowoon's troops into battle without one of their aces, and although he feels confident they can win, the fight will be intense and end up taking a major toll on his body. Having thrown off the delicate balance of Ancient Powers in his body, Cale learns he must find the Water of Judgement in three days to return to normal -- or else he'll explode. Add into the mix some thievery, identify theft, and a new declaration of war, and it's all in a day's work for the lovable lout and his overpowered found family.

In the past, I struggled with the long battle descriptions in this series, but perhaps I'm finally used to it now at volume seven, because I actually enjoyed the large-scale battle that takes up the first quarter of this book. Whether the writing improved or the fight was simply more straightforward, I could follow it much more clearly than previous ones. I also appreciate how all the battles are over the top but not dramatic; otherwise, I worry the books would fall into the trap of taking themselves too seriously.

After the war with the Indomitable Alliance, in keeping with the breakneck speed of this series, Cale immediately faces another crisis: his impending death. Even though it's obvious he'll survive, the writer does a great job of creating and maintaining tension, and while there are some quieter moments, for the most part, the plot retains its quick pace. The first half of this installment is the more exciting of the two, as the second half sees Cale setting the stage for future schemes. However, some of the shenanigans are almost comical, while other scenes focus on Cale and his cadre of badasses navigating the political landscape and get ahead of their enemies.

This is such a fun and fantastical series. It never disappoints, and I can always count on it to provide the perfect escape from reality.

Web novel chapters: 240-280

This volume covers the end of the Brek-Rowoon and Indomitable Alliance war. The Alliance is defeated at Death Canyon following the epic battle against the half-blood dragon. Cale strains his vessel overusing his Ancient Powers and using the rest of his Fire-Suppressing Water, leaving himself only three days to Find the Water of Judgment Ancient Power in the Easter Continent to stabilize it or else die. Raon finishes his first growth phase, and Cale returns to the inn he left Ron and Vicross in charge of to begin undermining Arm's influence on the Eastern Continent. Cale makes deals with the Flame Dwarves and the Bear Tribe to make moves against the Mogor Empire, and begins assisting Tunka and Whipper Kingdom to deal with Mogor making underhanded schemes to start another war with Whipper.

First things first, this was the absolute roughest start to a volume. We left off in the middle of an action-packed battle and picked right up and continued on like nothing had happened. If you read the web novel, there was no break because you can just click next chapter; but the volumes? No, that was a three-month break. It was incredibly frustrating to be dumped right back into the middle of everything like that. I get that they're trying to only incorporate about web novel 40 chapters or as close to 400 pages per volume as possible, but this was not a reader-friendly starting chapter.

Complaint aside, I loved this volume. Once you get past the first however many pages in the first chapter, it gets back into the flow of things as they fight the half-blood dragon. The defeat of the half-blood dragon was great, and his backstory was equal parts horrific and plot-moving. His connection to White Star, the leader of Arm and thus the Big Bad of the series, finally reveals information about our mysterious, rumored villain. He seems like a cruel monster from that backstory alone. A story is only as good as its villain, as some people say, and I am a firm believer in the thrill of a story having an amazing villain. That's what I'll remember.

Immediately after, Cale goes after the Water of Judgment and simultaneously Raon confronts his future, full-fledged self to finish his growth phase. Amazing. Absolutely amazing parts. They were both very exciting and tumultuous back-to-back hits right after how good the end of the war was. The story seems to be on a role.

Let's not ignore that subtle hint of Earth in a brief moment Cale recalled his life as Kim Roksu. It seems Earth is not our ordinary, run-of-the-mill world we live in. No, it seems his world is dangerous as well. If I recall, it's implied to be something like another web novel trope instead of boring, modern day Earth. To no surprise to anyone, Cale never relied on anyone's help to do his job despite having subordinates whose job it was tohelp him do that job. And here I thought he'd be a wage-slave in a company (yes, I know that is another trope on its own across all isekais). Sounds like he learned a bit from that experience since he does rely on the other cast members to bat away all the problems coming his way in Birth of a Hero, yet he still holds too much close to his chest and doesn't really let anyone in or lean on anyone. Rosalyn made sure to give him an earful about that this time.

And then we get back to Whipper and learn that Prince Adin made a horrifically vile demand in exchange for not going to war. And that's aside from giving back Myple Castle that was once Mogor's territory. And worse, the king of Whipper is a sick coward who actually considers it. Tunka, I think it's okay if you go ham on him. I'll be your alibi that you weren't there, promise!

Not looking forward to waiting until June and then September and December for the next volumes. I know I can read the web novel, but I just don't want to force myself to deal with translations like Alberu or Eruhaben instead of Alber/Alver/Albert and Erhaven. Not to mention Mogoru Empire rather than Mogor Empire when Mogoru is going to come up non-stop next volume because of the war. I don't know, I just can't look at these translations without thinking they are clearly wrong and incomplete. Sure, I hate that the official goes with God of Sun (consistent with God of Death?) and the Kingdom of the Whipper over the better alternatives of Sun God and Whipper Kingdom that sound so much more natural, but those seem incredibly minor in comparison.

War is erupting all over the world. Cale's battle at the gorge is hard-fought--but he has to deal with the consequences of unbalancing his Ancient Powers immediately, or his body will explode. And Raon is still asleep, caught in the grips of his first growth phase . . .

These volumes are breaking at rather unfortunate points, although that's the problem with making books out of what was a long-running web novel, as the arcs don't neatly line up with the number of pages a printed volume would have. Still, this one manages to finish out one war, tie up some loose ends and trigger a lot of interesting bits of knowledge that will come into play later, and ramp up for ANOTHER war by the end.

Cale's defining feature is that he thinks of himself as a slacker. He'll always look for the lowest-effort way to get things done . . . but he also never hesitates to step into the line of fire himself. Especially when the kids are at risk of being hurt. His declaration that he's going to step up because he's their guardian is a great character moment.

I also like how Albert and Cale's relationship just keeps getting more real as time goes on. Albert's finally comfortable enough around Cale to let the princely behavior slip, and the two of them have this whole frenemy vibe as they keep sarcastically sniping at each other. And Cale seems to exist to give Albert headaches, but Cale is ALSO the reason why their country isn't a flaming dumpster fire, so Albert is inclined to give him as much freedom as he wants, since it always seems to end up being what Albert would want anyway.

And this volume FINALLY DEBUTS one of my favorite parts of Cale's overall story: The Real Arm! Cale has serious TALENT for driving villians nuts. He understands it's not about being a good guy to their bad guy---it's about taking what they think is theirs. Because criminals don't care about right or wrong as much as they do when people rob them blind. And then make fun of them. And then start a little gang war between rival villain factions just because he can.

Choi Han is just along for the ride, at this point.

There's also some intriguing hints about who Kim Roksu was before he was Cale. And hints that his work involved more than just office labor, and "Team Leader" did a lot behind the scenes. Which all lines up with the ways he prefers to move now, and how his mind keeps track of all the little threads that could become loose ends if not properly dealt with.

Overall this is another fantastic volume. I remember the first time I read the section with The Real Arm and had to stop repeatedly because I was laughing too hard to keep going. I'm so glad these are now out as actual books. Highly Recommended.

The gang is back, back again!

While this novel starts with a bang, right where book 6 ends, there is quite a bit of downtime afterward. Not every battle can be an all-out epic clash, and to have those epic clashes go your way, you simply must get all your ducks in a row. After all, prep work makes the dream work! Anyway, this novel has a lot of that - preparations and getting everything in order so you can wreak incredible havoc upon your enemies. Very elegant, very demure.

My favorite parts about this novel are none of those, though. My favorite part is how freaking nonchalantly the novel begins to expose Kim Roksu's past. We've gotten tidbits about Cale's life in Korea before now. We knew he was an orphan and had experienced hunger before, we knew he was overworked, and we knew he loved to read. But nothing more than that. Nothing that could indicate that something was... wrong... in Cale's previous reality.

Now, in a way, Cale is a hint of all of that. I mean, his adaptability to his new life, his fearlessness in the face of danger, battle, and people much stronger than him, his ease when dealing with higher-ups, and his strategy-oriented brain that sees the entire picture, makes plans and backup plans, and moves forward no matter what, may all be seen as an indication of someone who comes from a tumultuous background.

But, number one, plenty of transmigration protagonists present these qualities without an elaborate background, and two, there is quite a difference between "he must've had a hard life in Korea," and Like, those are not equivalencies, LOL. But I get quite a kick out of how this information is handled in the narrative. It's not treated as a revelation or a twist. It's not a big shock. It's simply another piece of information about his past, as innocuous as loving to read. Except it isn't, really, which is why I love this approach so much.

I love these books so much. Cale is hilarious!

By this point everyone has realized Cale is generous and kind except Cale himself. I love those scenes where Cale is wondering why everyone thinks he is so great when he is a lout. He does not realize his actions are not those of a lout. How delusional.

Also, in this book there are hints that Kim Roksu's original world is not the Earth as we know it. Some kind of catastrophe happened and Kim Roksu was not a typical office worker.

I read this book a second time because Volume 08 was just released and I needed to remember where it ended in this volume. Then I read it all because it is so good.

The battle with the dragon half blood was great to read as they couldn’t rely on Raon which is new for a change. I also enjoyed the three days where Cale had to get a water ancient power to fix his plate. The war against the Empire is finally starting and the world will soon know of their evil. I’m excited for the next volume!

A lot of stuff happened in this issue. One large war was resolved and another is being prepared for. Meanwhile both Cale and Raon have evolved somewhat, and Cale’s plans on both continents are advancing.

I need a map

Another great addition to the series. Great story, characters, action, scheming and so on. But I really need a map of the various countries as can’t quite place them in my mind. The inclusion of a map in the next book and updates for previous books would be great.

This volume has one of my favourite arcs. Cale admitting that he will sacrifice himself and how he takes responsibility for the children. Also he almost dies and bleeds a lot; So that's a plus.

I really liked how Roan's growth was intertwined with Cale's. A nice little parallel.

There was a bit more of the War and fighting in this one witch I'm getting a bit tired of. That being said the fighting at the start of the book was more enjoyable than in the last.

Hopefully we can explore more political, conversational stuff in the next book. I think that's where the books shines more.

To anyone who loves transmigration stories, found family, eternally (amusingly) oblivious but wickedly smart characters, and some really good action scenes, I definitely recommend this series.

I adore Cale, Raon, Choi Han, Ohn, Hong, Rosalyn, Albert, Erhaven, Witira Clope Seca, and all the dozens of memorable and lovable characters in this series! I have LOOOONG finished the online novel for this series (all 776 webnovel chapters) and am actively waiting for the next chapter of part two to be released (currently ch. 553). Completely work the many sleepless nights I've spent reading this series!

Question for future volumes:
Did Kim Roksu come from an earth that went through its own fantasy apocalypse?
I always thought he came from a "normal" Earth because he was reading web novels on his day off.

"Even in his life as Kim Roksu, he had received a lot of complaints when he became the new team leader because he only gave brief orders to the employees, mercenaries, and ability users." - pg 284

"Be it in Korea or this fantasy world, the rotten ones were all the same. That was why the good guilds had such a hard time. One of Kim Roksu's jobs back on Earth had been to discreetly neutralize those crooked ability users' guilds—that was the way to mitigate the chaos." -pg 330

“Even in Korea—no, even on Earth—people did far worse for the sake of their own survival when the world descended into chaos...
The year after Cale—or rather, Kim Roksu—took his college entrance exams, he was working part-time at a restaurant when violent upheaval struck without warning...
Someone once said that the world would go to hell in the event of an apocalypse… It was difficult to do it alone. They needed each other. That truth brought the people back together to return to a bearable world.” -pg 400-401

Where we left off:
Cale is with Choi Han & they are @Whipper with “stupid Tunka” & Herol. The empire is starting a war with the Whipper empire & so Cale is gathering a team to help out. Rosalyn is taking the mages who left Whipper & they are going to go fight for their country (they have been naturalized in Rowoon.)
• hoping this helps Whipper move from “all magic is bad” to “bad people used magic to do bad things”

What to look forward to/remember:
- the flame dwarves working with Mary to create flame birds
- how the bear tribe joins in
- half blood dragon human dude is now working in the inn
- “Agreement Regarding Liv-An’s Eastern Business” that proves the corruption between 3 groups
- 1 out of Arm’s 2 main bases is Ron’s family’s mansion
- Goldie dragon has less than a year to live
? does Cale use the god of death’s artifact to save the golden gramps?
- Roan’s special nature(?) is the present & Goldie’s is dust(?)
- the fire cheapskate mentioned to watch out for those with a sky attribute, something to do with arrogance?
- our cat knight has been informed he is the king to be in Cale’s game plan.
— cat knight knows NOTHING about the cat tribe & going berserk (Cale needs to ask Erhaven about the cat tribe)
- the twin saints have secretly made their return to the empire (w/ the healer elf & the sculptor assassin inc)
- the jungle is geared & ready to go after the alchemist’s bell tower
- the desert country prince is now unofficially in Cale’s group once he realized that the imperial prince has been screwing him over
- Cale has received/upgraded the firepower to the fullest; apparently, it is a disaster bringer(?)
- the world tree plans on giving the seed(?) to Roan
- the crown that is thirsty for dragon’s blood is scared of the con power & Cale’s power aura has grown more powerful, though he has to occasionally beat the crown so it doesn’t eye Roan or get any funny ideas

3 things he learned from the tree update:
✔️ someone collecting nature powers
✔️ judge of water who fled to the east
🔘 Roan’s heritage
