Just as Rowoon and its allies are about to clash against the Indomitable Alliance at Death Canyon, Cale Henituse awakens to find the young dragon, Raon, has entered his first growth phase and fallen into a temporary coma. Now, Cale must lead Rowoon's troops into battle without one of their aces, and although he feels confident they can win, the fight will be intense and end up taking a major toll on his body. Having thrown off the delicate balance of Ancient Powers in his body, Cale learns he must find the Water of Judgement in three days to return to normal -- or else he'll explode. Add into the mix some thievery, identify theft, and a new declaration of war, and it's all in a day's work for the lovable lout and his overpowered found family.

In the past, I struggled with the long battle descriptions in this series, but perhaps I'm finally used to it now at volume seven, because I actually enjoyed the large-scale battle that takes up the first quarter of this book. Whether the writing improved or the fight was simply more straightforward, I could follow it much more clearly than previous ones. I also appreciate how all the battles are over the top but not dramatic; otherwise, I worry the books would fall into the trap of taking themselves too seriously.

After the war with the Indomitable Alliance, in keeping with the breakneck speed of this series, Cale immediately faces another crisis: his impending death. Even though it's obvious he'll survive, the writer does a great job of creating and maintaining tension, and while there are some quieter moments, for the most part, the plot retains its quick pace. The first half of this installment is the more exciting of the two, as the second half sees Cale setting the stage for future schemes. However, some of the shenanigans are almost comical, while other scenes focus on Cale and his cadre of badasses navigating the political landscape and get ahead of their enemies.

This is such a fun and fantastical series. It never disappoints, and I can always count on it to provide the perfect escape from reality.

Web novel chapters: 240-280

This volume covers the end of the Brek-Rowoon and Indomitable Alliance war. The Alliance is defeated at Death Canyon following the epic battle against the half-blood dragon. Cale strains his vessel overusing his Ancient Powers and using the rest of his Fire-Suppressing Water, leaving himself only three days to Find the Water of Judgment Ancient Power in the Easter Continent to stabilize it or else die. Raon finishes his first growth phase, and Cale returns to the inn he left Ron and Vicross in charge of to begin undermining Arm's influence on the Eastern Continent. Cale makes deals with the Flame Dwarves and the Bear Tribe to make moves against the Mogor Empire, and begins assisting Tunka and Whipper Kingdom to deal with Mogor making underhanded schemes to start another war with Whipper.

First things first, this was the absolute roughest start to a volume. We left off in the middle of an action-packed battle and picked right up and continued on like nothing had happened. If you read the web novel, there was no break because you can just click next chapter; but the volumes? No, that was a three-month break. It was incredibly frustrating to be dumped right back into the middle of everything like that. I get that they're trying to only incorporate about web novel 40 chapters or as close to 400 pages per volume as possible, but this was not a reader-friendly starting chapter.

Complaint aside, I loved this volume. Once you get past the first however many pages in the first chapter, it gets back into the flow of things as they fight the half-blood dragon. The defeat of the half-blood dragon was great, and his backstory was equal parts horrific and plot-moving. His connection to White Star, the leader of Arm and thus the Big Bad of the series, finally reveals information about our mysterious, rumored villain. He seems like a cruel monster from that backstory alone. A story is only as good as its villain, as some people say, and I am a firm believer in the thrill of a story having an amazing villain. That's what I'll remember.

Immediately after, Cale goes after the Water of Judgment and simultaneously Raon confronts his future, full-fledged self to finish his growth phase. Amazing. Absolutely amazing parts. They were both very exciting and tumultuous back-to-back hits right after how good the end of the war was. The story seems to be on a role.

Let's not ignore that subtle hint of Earth in a brief moment Cale recalled his life as Kim Roksu. It seems Earth is not our ordinary, run-of-the-mill world we live in. No, it seems his world is dangerous as well. If I recall, it's implied to be something like another web novel trope instead of boring, modern day Earth. To no surprise to anyone, Cale never relied on anyone's help to do his job despite having subordinates whose job it was tohelp him do that job. And here I thought he'd be a wage-slave in a company (yes, I know that is another trope on its own across all isekais). Sounds like he learned a bit from that experience since he does rely on the other cast members to bat away all the problems coming his way in Birth of a Hero, yet he still holds too much close to his chest and doesn't really let anyone in or lean on anyone. Rosalyn made sure to give him an earful about that this time.

And then we get back to Whipper and learn that Prince Adin made a horrifically vile demand in exchange for not going to war. And that's aside from giving back Myple Castle that was once Mogor's territory. And worse, the king of Whipper is a sick coward who actually considers it. Tunka, I think it's okay if you go ham on him. I'll be your alibi that you weren't there, promise!

Not looking forward to waiting until June and then September and December for the next volumes. I know I can read the web novel, but I just don't want to force myself to deal with translations like Alberu or Eruhaben instead of Alber/Alver/Albert and Erhaven. Not to mention Mogoru Empire rather than Mogor Empire when Mogoru is going to come up non-stop next volume because of the war. I don't know, I just can't look at these translations without thinking they are clearly wrong and incomplete. Sure, I hate that the official goes with God of Sun (consistent with God of Death?) and the Kingdom of the Whipper over the better alternatives of Sun God and Whipper Kingdom that sound so much more natural, but those seem incredibly minor in comparison.

War is erupting all over the world. Cale's battle at the gorge is hard-fought--but he has to deal with the consequences of unbalancing his Ancient Powers immediately, or his body will explode. And Raon is still asleep, caught in the grips of his first growth phase . . .

These volumes are breaking at rather unfortunate points, although that's the problem with making books out of what was a long-running web novel, as the arcs don't neatly line up with the number of pages a printed volume would have. Still, this one manages to finish out one war, tie up some loose ends and trigger a lot of interesting bits of knowledge that will come into play later, and ramp up for ANOTHER war by the end.

Cale's defining feature is that he thinks of himself as a slacker. He'll always look for the lowest-effort way to get things done . . . but he also never hesitates to step into the line of fire himself. Especially when the kids are at risk of being hurt. His declaration that he's going to step up because he's their guardian is a great character moment.

I also like how Albert and Cale's relationship just keeps getting more real as time goes on. Albert's finally comfortable enough around Cale to let the princely behavior slip, and the two of them have this whole frenemy vibe as they keep sarcastically sniping at each other. And Cale seems to exist to give Albert headaches, but Cale is ALSO the reason why their country isn't a flaming dumpster fire, so Albert is inclined to give him as much freedom as he wants, since it always seems to end up being what Albert would want anyway.

And this volume FINALLY DEBUTS one of my favorite parts of Cale's overall story: The Real Arm! Cale has serious TALENT for driving villians nuts. He understands it's not about being a good guy to their bad guy---it's about taking what they think is theirs. Because criminals don't care about right or wrong as much as they do when people rob them blind. And then make fun of them. And then start a little gang war between rival villain factions just because he can.

Choi Han is just along for the ride, at this point.

There's also some intriguing hints about who Kim Roksu was before he was Cale. And hints that his work involved more than just office labor, and "Team Leader" did a lot behind the scenes. Which all lines up with the ways he prefers to move now, and how his mind keeps track of all the little threads that could become loose ends if not properly dealt with.

Overall this is another fantastic volume. I remember the first time I read the section with The Real Arm and had to stop repeatedly because I was laughing too hard to keep going. I'm so glad these are now out as actual books. Highly Recommended.

The battle with the dragon half blood was great to read as they couldn’t rely on Raon which is new for a change. I also enjoyed the three days where Cale had to get a water ancient power to fix his plate. The war against the Empire is finally starting and the world will soon know of their evil. I’m excited for the next volume!

A lot of stuff happened in this issue. One large war was resolved and another is being prepared for. Meanwhile both Cale and Raon have evolved somewhat, and Cale’s plans on both continents are advancing.

I need a map

Another great addition to the series. Great story, characters, action, scheming and so on. But I really need a map of the various countries as can’t quite place them in my mind. The inclusion of a map in the next book and updates for previous books would be great.

I really liked how Roan's growth was intertwined with Cale's. A nice little parallel.

There was a bit more of the War and fighting in this one witch I'm getting a bit tired of. That being said the fighting at the start of the book was more enjoyable than in the last.

Hopefully we can explore more political, conversational stuff in the next book. I think that's where the books shines more.

This volume has one of my favourite arcs. Cale admitting that he will sacrifice himself and how he takes responsibility for the children. Also he almost dies and bleeds a lot; So that's a plus.

To anyone who loves transmigration stories, found family, eternally (amusingly) oblivious but wickedly smart characters, and some really good action scenes, I definitely recommend this series.

I adore Cale, Raon, Choi Han, Ohn, Hong, Rosalyn, Albert, Erhaven, Witira Clope Seca, and all the dozens of memorable and lovable characters in this series! I have LOOOONG finished the online novel for this series (all 776 webnovel chapters) and am actively waiting for the next chapter of part two to be released (currently ch. 553). Completely work the many sleepless nights I've spent reading this series!
