A NOT-SO-PERFECT MATCHAfter Fuuko confronts Yuni's girlfriend with the vicious truth of their affair, Yuni chooses to stay with Nanase. It doesn't take long for her will to waver though, and she sneaks off to see Fuuko once again. Meanwhile, a stressed-out Nanase lashes out at her friend and teammate, Yuki. In order to make up for her outburst, she gives her a small gift. However, that sets Yuni off since she's been waiting for Nanase to give her a matching accessory for months now. Can their fragile relationship withstand the odds?
If people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones, we have this volume as a total no-fly zone because there are now exactly zero blameless parties in this horny debacle. Oh, yes, Yuni started it, but everybody gets a turn here.
Fuuko turns out to be perilously close to a yandere, although I was happy to see that her ‘Mom’ statements from last time were only half as weird as things looked like they might get.
In Fuuko’s mind, that means she’ll always love Yuni, but also never be her number one. Given her backstory, it’s entirely possible that Fuuko’s encounters with Yuni are mostly transactional ways to get around her own self-loathing.
Then again, it’s manga, she might just be doing it for kicks. The last reveal this time is a hell of a gut punch and definitely posits an incredibly bleak ending for the series where Yuni is left all on her own with nobody in her life.
Well, she’ll enjoy herself until that point at least. Fuuko brings a little kink play into an impromptu rendezvous during sports day and it is a scorchingly hot scene between the two. Whatever moral judgements are to be made, the two sure get passionate together.
Nanase continues to be the most innocent one again, but it’s a definitely graded on a curve. She’s completely tone deaf when it comes to caring about Yuni, whether she loves her or not.
She lashes out at Yuki, who is unfortunately accurate in pointing out the problems here even as she’s angling to land Nanase herself. Nanase’s apology to Yuki only makes things worse between the former and Yuni and on and on we go.
The real question is what in the hell is going to happen here. Fuuko makes it clear that she’s angling to be second place with benefits and not just straight-up loved, even as Yuni is way too drawn to her for that position.
Given how incredibly irreparable the Nanase/Yuni relationship seems at this point, I can’t see the two of them getting back together and calling it a happy ending. The frayed edges are fully torn by the end of the volume, even when Nanase thinks she’s helping (she’s not).
And Nanase is slowly being affected by all this like never before. She becomes a little less cautious about concealing her relationship with Yuni, although it’s now way beyond the point where that would have helped. You can tell that Yuni knows it too.
Which is all to say, if you like your tawdry to be wonderfully delicious? This is deliciously tawdry and then some. It is a sumptuous meal of poor impulse control and melodrama that serves something that somehow works.
4 stars - I guess drop a star or three if you don’t like this sort of story, but it is a belter as far as trashy “romance” stories go.
A bit of a weaker volume. The mama stuff is def a weird turn. This girl obviously has some really fucked up emotional issues, and her babysitter/abuser might have really screwed up her mind cause what the fuck?
As for the relationship between the two it's so messy, and we know it isn't going to work, so this trainwreck is always fun to watch.
Why did everyone suddenly become extra unbearable in this volume!? Yuni is such a whiny unreasonable bitch, I somehow enjoyed her in earlier vols, but she genuinely ever gives a fuck about herself and it gets annoying fast. She’s a cheater and a horrible individual, there’s nothing that could normalise her behavior against people. I cannot wait for the moment, when Natsume properly leaves her ass and becomes a thing with that friend of hers or smth. All of the main girls are overly sexualised, despite being highschoolers, plus it’s totally fine for teenagers to want to discover different kinds of intimacy with each other and be interested in bdsm dynamics, but in this, the whole ‘mama’ thing is just blatantly weird and uncomfortable to read. It’s giving age play and I don’t fuck w that shit. I waited to read this volume for months and now I just ended up being disappointed and annoyed at everything currently going on in the story. I adore toxic yuri, but why’s so much of it just trash writing ugh
This series Is setting up to take the spot that Boys Abyss had which is me hate reading a series. I know it’s trash and I despise Yuni more and more with each volume but for whatever reason I keep reading and wanting to know what happens. (I did finally break the cord with Boys Abyss.)
This volume is more of Yunis hypocritical nonsense. The weirdness of Fuuko and the whole mommy thing is still there but her explanation of what a mommy is made it a little less creepy, it’s still extremely messed up.
Nanase is honestly too pure of a character to be in this world. She deserves so much better. Everything she does is an issue for Yuni who is now declaring she’s so unhappy and doesn’t want this. Here’s an idea leave Nanase. The ending of the volume has me interested in who this new girl is and I hate myself for it.
My dream ending to this series is Yuni dying. Fuuko getting the mental help she so clearly needs and Nanase having a woman who truly deserves her, perhaps Yuki. TBD on my wish for the new girl.
Once a heart has tilted, it’s impossible to fully set it straight again. With it now clear that the protagonist’s feelings are leaning toward the “affair” partner, she once again clashes with her girlfriend.
At this point, it feels as though further digging into the emotional depths of the three characters is becoming strained. As a reader, I found myself hoping instead for a comparatively happy ending, even if that meant forming two new couples rather than forcing things to return to how they were.
However, the final moments introduce yet another spark of trouble, suggesting the story is about to plunge into even deeper confusion. While this escalation feels excessive, I can’t deny that it still makes me want to read on.
My Girlfriend's Not Here Today continues to look beautiful. The art is gorgeous. This volume has Fuuko calling herself Yuni's mom and I'm really not here for it. I don't know if it's the translation or what's happening but it gives me casual ick. This series is amazing. You love/hate all the characters except Fuuko who is always sympathetic and the best, even when she's trying to convince Yuni some nonsense about mothers? (ew)
idk what to say except please stop with the mama thing and omg were the girls drawn like that the whole time ? I didn't notice as much before for some reason. Also why is her mom always back hugging her like I don't wanna make it creepy , once other twice is ok but every single one of their pannel is drawn that way , that PAIRED with the whole mama thing makes it more uncomfortable
i loved the hot and cold energy of this volume even if it’s not one of my favs. the cliffhanger at the end had me mad for months waiting for the next chapter to be published
