In the cursed forests of Lirien, Seren Ragnall lives by blood and blade. As a warrior of the rebel Viori, she’s sworn to kill any Lirien loyalist she encounters. But when a Lirien soldier saves her life—wounding himself in the process—Seren does the unthinkable: she spares him. To keep him from execution, she invokes a forbidden blood oath that binds their fates . . . and their souls.
What Seren doesn’t know is that her captive isn’t just any soldier. Rykr Westhaven is the exiled heir to the Lirien throne—a prince with a price on his head and enemies closing in. If the Viori discover who he truly is, they’ll kill him—and her for protecting him.
Condemned to a brutal trial by combat to earn their freedom, Seren and Rykr must fight side by side—against monsters, rivals, and the heat simmering between them. Their bond was forged in blood, but it sparks something darker, hungrier. What began as duty becomes desire, and every touch threatens to unravel the lies they’ve told to survive.
Because when the truth comes to light, the only thing more dangerous than your sworn enemy . . . is the one you can’t live without.
Carved in Crimson is the first book in the Heirs of Lirien series, romantic fantasies set in a mythical land. Content includes violence, battle scenes and wounds, strong language, and open door, steamy romantic content.
Annabelle McCormack writes historical romantic fiction, fantasy romance, and contemporary romance packed with sprawling adventures, epic love, and soulmates who just can’t stay away from each other (even when the world is falling apart). If there’s a sweeping love story with high stakes and deep emotions, she’s probably writing it—or at least dreaming about it while chasing down her next cup of coffee.
When she’s not wrangling words, she’s wrangling five home-schooled kids, a couple of dogs, and an unreasonable amount of books in Maryland. If life had more hours (and less laundry), she’d be traveling, painting, or becoming a professional pastry chef. For now, she’s content with baking, reading, lifting heavy things at the gym, and plotting her next great escape—er, novel.

I’m going to be honest - I’m very picky with my fantasy reads, which is why I don’t make frequent review posts for that genre. However this fantasy book did it for me! The world building is carefully crafted, including a map provided, the characters have depth, the world politics are explained and well-developed, and any romance flows naturally and works so well.
I will definitely be reading the sequel! Thank you Annabelle McCormack for re-awakening my love for fantasy by crafting such an intricate world and beautiful story 🧡💙❤️

Carved in Crimson absolutely ruined me in the best, most glorious, soul-snatching way possible. This book didn’t just meet my expectations; it broke them, set them on fire, and carved its name into my reader heart.
The writing? An absolute delight. Every line flowed with purpose, sharp, emotional, and deliciously addictive. I found myself rereading paragraphs just to soak up the perfection of it all.
The world-building is nothing short of phenomenal. The way the author crafted the realms, the ancient gods, and the intricate system of magic and bindings felt so vivid and alive. Every detail felt intentional, layered, and brimming with mystery. And the best part? We’ve only seen the surface level of it all. You can feel there’s so much more lurking beneath: deeper histories, hidden powers, and secrets waiting to be unearthed in the next book. It’s the kind of world that promises to only get richer, darker, and more spellbinding from here.
Banter: 10/10. Sharp. Funny. Flirty. Painfully well-timed. The kind of banter that makes you grin like an idiot and then immediately clutch your chest from emotional damage two pages later.
There were moments that made me laugh out loud, and others that had me straight-up crying into my pillow. The love confessions? Swoonworthy. Tender and raw in a way that didn’t feel cheesy, just real.
Now let’s talk about the trope execution because this isn’t your regular “marriage of convenience” setup. Oh no. This is a true enemies-to-lovers done right with a marriage of convenience. The tension, the snark, the power plays, everything was so well laid out that by the time they actually gave in, I was practically cheering like a sports fan at a final match.
FMC — Seren. Not a single annoying bone in her body. Brave, reckless, loyal and dangerous when it comes to protecting those she loves. She’s petite, sure, but anyone who mistakes her size for weakness is in for a rude awakening. A true warrior. Her strength is loud, her heart is fierce, and her journey? Purely incredible.
MMC — Rykr. Oh. My. Gods. This man. A walking weapon with a sharp tongue and sharper instincts. He’s the kind of lethal, gorgeously handsome warrior you know could destroy you but instead, he chooses to ruin you emotionally with a single look and his mouth. The way he’s protective, a little possessive, and so deeply attuned to Seren’s strength made my heart combust. And that mouth of his? The banter alone should be illegal.
The side characters deserve equal applause. Each one of them was layered, loyal, and equally strong and their friendship with Seren could probably survive an apocalypse.
Now… the Skorn Trials. Holy. Hell. Those scenes were nerve-wracking. I was on the edge of my seat for the last 40% of this book, heart pounding, breath held, refusing to blink because the pacing was that good.
And the ending? It shattered me, rebuilt me, and then laughed while I was still emotionally bleeding. The final line alone made me stare at the wall like, “Oh, it’s about to go down in hell next book.”
Then came the epilogue. WHAT. THE. ACTUAL. HELL. 😭 Who was that?! Why would you do that to us?! And now I have to wait a whole year to find out? I’m undeniably unwell.
To sum it up: Carved in Crimson is a masterclass in fantasy romance filled with grit, heart, chaos, and a love story that burns hotter than any inferno.
Wow, what a book to get me out of this slump I've been in.
Seren and Rykre are everything. The side characters were just everything. The writing was beautiful, the world building exquisite. Something slightly different and i loved it, i knew it would be good from the prologue alone. Wow.
You have reluctant enemies to lovers, Banter, Found family, forced proximity, blood oath/soulbound, unique magic system, gruesome creatures. Everything you want in a romantasy/fantasy.
I'm not saying anymore, i don't want to spoil it, just get it read lol
Thank you Netgalley, the author and publisher for this opportunity
Thank you to Netgalley, Victory Editing and Annabelle McCormick for this eARC! Genre: Romantacy ⭐️5/5 🌶 2/5 🧠 6/10 (Had to reference the glossary only a few times in the beginning) Cliffhanger 7/10 (Bumped a point for the epilogue because what the heck?)
Noteworthy: Book 1 of an incomplete series. Dual POV. Publication date is November 4th, 2025.
I am begging anyone who is reading this review to add this book to your TBR and read it immediately on release day. It's that good! The writing and world are incredibly immersive. My favorite kinds of reads are the ones you get so lost in you put off everything else. This is one of those books!
The two main characters are amazing! The FMC Seren is pretty much the perfect female lead. She's loyal, kind, brave and most of all smart. Watching her work through things and figure stuff out on her own was so refreshing. She is young and does have a touch a naivety, but not so much that it hinders her character. It just made her believable. She may be one of my favorite FMCs I've ever read in a Romantacy. The MMC Rykr is so cocky and brash in a tongue in cheek way. But he also has a huge sense of loyalty and watching him wrestle with his circumstances made for some great chapters. They are both unapologetically who they are, yet not so closed minded and stubborn that they can't have real growth! So good!
The side characters were well fleshed out. I found myself even caring for characters that we don't see beyond the first few chapters just because of how they are weaved into the story. The bad guys are indeed very bad! I love when everyone is morally gray but sometimes having a clear villian just hits the spot!
It's Norse inspired with an interesting magic system including fabled beasts. If you liked A Fate Inked in Blood, Direbound, Shield of Sparrows, or anything where you want to truly get swept away in an incredible story, pick this one up!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
And here I was, thinking I was too old for this. Apparently, I’m not—and I didn’t want this book to end. It was great! I’ve been craving a good fantasy romance for a while, but I either end up DNFing them or the ones I finish leave me disappointed. Well, this one scratched the itch. Lovable characters, an engrossing plot, and the banter… oh, the banter 🫠 — chef’s kiss! In short: -Dual POV -Well-crafted world and characters -Credible fighting scenes Tastefully done romance Truly engrossing. 👏🏻👏🏻
I'm writing this review with my eyes red from crying, such a wonderful reading experience.
A romantasy book with slow-burning love story that started with the marriage of convenience trope. A fantasy world full of magic, creatures, and gods. Action, trial, enemies-to-lovers, intrigue, and prophecies. I recommend this book to all romantasy fans.
Thanks to Victory Editing and NetGalley for the early review copy!
"Fire consumes everything in its path. Even chains. My path was mine to forge… or burn." (Prologue)
Slow-burn romantasy that evolves from strangers/enemies-to-lovers through a fake, but ancient forged marriage oath bond. Seren is strong-willed and has an equally strong sense of family and values. Inevitably, that nature leads her naively onto and into a perilous path. The bond she forges with Rykr opens up the door to dangers and secrets that could very well mean death for one or both of them.
""....The question is: how far will you go to save her?”" (Ch 1)
Blood oaths, high-stakes, hidden identities, suppressed powers, political intrigue, trials, duty/personal agendas, and deadly beasts.
"Nothing says romance like casual death threats.” (Ch 10)
Choices!!! Argh. Those choices made with tunnel vision are so frustrating when you want the characters to do the right thing and not be stupid, but then they end up doing the opposite.
"She was.... forbidden fruit in every way, and right now, the only thing I wanted was a taste." (Ch 28)
The twist that came, I kind of suspected earlier on, but it does try to throw you off the scent.
"He’ll kill me on sight if he recognizes me. I had to survive this meeting. I was the only one.... left to stop him. And now my true purpose was clear." (Ch 25)
And man, toward the end with less than 5% left, it was a tear-jerker for me. 😪 A great love story, but will it have a happy ending?
Finally, the epiloge left me confused, but intrigued. Guess I'll find out what it means, in book 2.
I received an ARC of this book, which does not affect my review. Thank you to the author and Booksirens for the chance to read this book.
This was simply phenomenal. Wow. I might go as far to say I was hooked before it even began with the beautiful maps but then it started and I was pulled in even deeper. From the start, it is hard not to be in love with the characters from Rykr, an exiled prince who covers up his vulnerability, secrets, and issues with a sense of humor, to Seren, whose ambition is admirable and is a very likable character from the beginning all the way until the end. While the two are initially pushed together after Rykr saves her live and she spares him, they fall deeper into each other’s fates and eventually realize maybe it was meant to be. I loved both characters a lot but Rykr was probably my favorite. I just love characters who cover their own sweetness with some taunting and banter.
But there is much more than the blooming love story going on here, from political tension, magic and soul bonds, danger around every corner, and supernatural creatures that make this the kind of dark epic fantasy I yearn for. There is a reason this is my favorite genre, after all! Because there was so much going on, it made the romance work even better. Not only was there great chemistry between the two, and I was so excited for it to keep growing, but it made both of their stories even better. I don’t always think romance is needed to enhance character arcs, and sometimes it can even feel oddly placed, but this is not one of those times. Here the romance was an integral part of the plot and the story was made better for it. It makes the stakes, already high, feel even higher, as Rkyr and Seren contend with the trials. No one is safe and you genuinely feel that way which makes it so much better. I love it when I read a book and I truly do not know who will live or who will die, as it makes the ramifications so much more serious and real. Climatic fights and deaths are some of my favorite parts of a book and the books where they have me utterly in their grasp, where I am moved to tears at character deaths or holding my breath because I don’t know what will happen, who will be defeated, or who will die, is when I am strangely the happiest. The book wraps up in a way, but it also ends on a cliffhanger. Now I need to know what is going to happen between Rkyr and Seren, how Seren is going to react, all of it. As much as a good cliffhanger makes me want to read the next book, I am so sad the next book isn’t already out! However, I enjoyed this story so much that I might just read it again once the second book is ready.
This is an action-packed fantasy romance, with high stakes politics, captives, surprises, and so much more. If I thought I was hooked in the beginning, I was in for a treat, because somehow it just gets better and better.
From the moment I read the blurb I’d a good feeling about this book and I wasn’t wrong. Easily one of my favourite book of the year.
If you love Romantasy with:
🔥Enemies to lovers (he’s the prince and she’s part of the rebellion) ❄️Forced Proximity. 🔥Marriage of convenience. ❄️Found Family, Banter. 🔥Forbidden Love. ❄️Unique Magic system. 🔥 Hidden Identity ❄️MY WIFE!!! 🔥 Blood oaths, Elemental magic, Politics, betrayal, Soul bond, magical creatures, unexpected twists and so much more.
Rykr and Seren was amazing. They were both strong, honourable, warriors and powerful. I adored the way Rykr protected Seren from everything. When he first stood with her and called her ‘My wife’ —even when he had all the reasons to hate her— I swooned. They respected each other and were there for each other always even when they both were forced to keep secrets. The world building was epic, second half thrilling and anxiety inducing. I loved the way the story was revealed. The plot and magic system was complex but well written. But the climax took the cake. What an epic showdown was it!!!!
So sad to see some of the things that happened in the last part but I’m so excited for the next book.
I received an advance review copy and I’m leaving this review voluntarily.
Oh. My. Gosh. I LOVED this book!! Carved in Crimson completely owned me I couldn’t put it down and that ENDING?? Excuse me while I scream into the void because I need book two immediately!!
This story had everything I crave in a Romantasy with enemies to lovers, slow burn tension that had me feral, forced proximity, magical bonds, found family, and banter so sharp and delicious I was giggling and kicking my feet. The yearning?? The chemistry?? Off. The. Charts.
Seren and Rykr have such addictive energy together, she’s strong and smart with just the right touch of vulnerability, and he’s the kind of confident, grumpy MMC who will absolutely ruin your life (in the best way). Their connection built so perfectly that by the time things finally happen, I was fully unhinged.
Annabelle McCormack’s world-building is gorgeous and immersive, dark, magical, and full of twists that had me gasping out loud. The pacing was perfect, the tension was unreal, and I swear I was holding my breath half the time.
This is exactly the kind of book that reminds me why I’m obsessed with Romantasy. I loved every single second, and I’m already dying for book two. Someone please tell me when it’s coming because I’m not okay! Thanks to Crowns and Chaos and the author for the gifted ARC.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 6/5🌟 I devoured this book. A forced proximity, enemies to lovers, slow burn, marriage of “convenience” (if we’re calling it that 😉). Gracious, the tension and yearning are so good!! The twists were twisty and the turns were turny. My gosh there were plenty of them. Just when you think you may have something figured out, you don’t. But you love it that way and don’t want this story to end. This is book one and ends on a mild cliffhanger. I’m already looking forward to my reread and can’t wait to get a signed copy in my hands. I’m obsessed with these characters! The wit and banter and the yearningggg. It just what I love in a Romantasy! There is open door spice, I’d rate 2/5 🌶️🌶️. It’s descriptive but it’s not much. There’s side characters to love and enough development that you can’t wait to continue this story for the sake of ALL of them!! Thank you to the author and Crowns and Chaos PR for the eARC. This voluntary review is my honest thoughts and opinions about the book. You will love love love this story if you are a fan of Enemies to lovers Magical bonds Found family Forced proximity One bed My wife Slow burn Marriage of convenience Hidden identity
Anyways…I LOVED THIS BOOK! And I hope you will too! 🤍
This was my first book by Annabelle and her debut into fantasy did NOT disappoint. Carved in Crimson was everything I want in a dark romantasy—enemies-to-lovers tension, touch her & ☠️ vibes, soul bonds, forbidden love, deadly trials, and just the right amount of spice to keep the story sizzling. The plot and pacing flows so effortlessly that I flew through it, completely wrapped up in the magic of the world and its characters.
The story is filled with archaic superstitions, an intense and vivid setting, and so many jaw dropping moments that left me on edge with every twist. The world-building is intricate yet not overwhelming and the romance is perfectly woven in. The skinwraiths were terrifying, and gave major white walker vibes. The magic system was super original and the fantasy setting gave me some LOTR vibes and I was here for it 😂.
Rikr's struggle to resist his feelings for Seren and vice versa adds so many layers to their dynamic. The chemistry between them was straight up electric!!!! The amount of tension and longing and pining had me flipping pages so fast. The tension had me holding my breath, and when it escalated, I found myself blushing and swooning!! CiC is a true slow burn, simmering and building with every interaction… I can't wait to see where their relationship goes with all the obstacles and foreshadowing about what’s coming with the next book! The banter was straight up perfection and had me laughing out loud.
I was blown away and gasping when everything finally came together at the end. I have sooo many theories!!! This book will be living rent free in my brain for a long time and I’m counting down the days for the next book to come out!!

I absolutely devoured this book. I could not put this book down & I stayed up late a few times reading this book. This is the first book in the Heirs of Lirien series and is set in a mythical land. Seren Ragnall is the MFC and she is a fierce warrior fighter of the rebel Viori and is sworn to kill Lirien loyalists. She lives in a forest called The Dreadwood with her family and tribe. She has some mystical powers as well as the other tribe members. The MMC, Ryker Westhaven, aka Prince Calix, and is a Lirian. These two sworn enemies cross paths, and what occurs after they meet “bonded” them together. I loved these two! Ryker is arrogant and cocky & Seren was perfect to counter him with her strengths. This mystical world the author created is amazing and a page turner for sure! The second half of this book is so exciting and had my heart racing with lots of twists and turns, especially the ending. The secondary characters as well had a fantastic storyline intertwined. It did end on a cliffhanger but wrapped up most of the storyline and paved the way for book 2, which I will definitely be reading when it comes out next year. So long to wait! I can see this book made into a movie or tv show. This is a romantasy with a slow burn romance, enemies to lovers, and the path that gets them there is so intriguing! It has magic and monsters of all sorts. Also: Content includes violence, battle scenes and wounds, strong language, but not too graphic. This book will be available on Nov 10th. I received this book as an E-Arc from Victory Editing NetGalley Co-Op.
Can we take a moment to appreciate the absolute swoon-worthy attributes of men written by women?? Rykr is surrounded by enemies, bound to a daughter of his greatest foe, and his honor and depth of character are so deep, that he says things like this. ::melts::
That's right people, the enemies-to-lovers trope gets a makeover in Carved in Crimson!! It's not enough to make Seren and Rykr's people enemies; no, Seren's father has to be the very man Rykr hates more than life itself. At least, until his life finds new meaning...
"You're not nobody, you're my wife."
And did I mention that Seren and Rykr are not only married, but soul-bound in an ancient ritual Seren used to save his life WITHOUT his permission??
This is just the tip of the iceberg of this epic new romantasy! Carved in Crimson has all the elements that we've grown to love but with unique new twists you won't see coming.
Thank you SO MUCH Annabelle McCormack and Crowns and Chaos PR for the opportunity to read this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I’m incredibly grateful to have been given the opportunity to read this book as an ARC reader.
This book is, without a doubt, a five-star read for me. From the first page to the last, I was completely immersed in the world, lore, characters, and love that filled every chapter.
McCormack is a truly gifted author. She not only breathes vivid life into her fractured, magical world but also gives her characters depth, purpose, and unforgettable personalities.
I’m always drawn to an enemies-to-lovers and marriage-of-convenience fantasy romance, but Carved in Crimson is so much more than that. McCormack revitalizes these tropes by exploring the real challenge of gaining and giving trust—especially trusting yourself when it contradicts the faith you once had in others.
This story is rich in detail, visceral in emotion, and consuming in its passion, conviction, and persistence.
Seren is aware of her limitations, but her confidence and self-trust are shaken when she faces a dire choice: save a stranger by any means necessary or condemn him to death simply for being in the wrong place. Though she feels rattled and haunted by her decision and its consequences, this moment marks the first time she acts on instinct—defying the beliefs she was raised with among the Viori. Deep down, she knows she has never truly belonged to them. This realization sets her on a dark, passionate, and devastating path—one she was always meant to walk.
When Rykr is saved by a “savage” Viori woman and subjected to her people’s harsh laws, he’s challenged in ways he never expected. This fierce woman stands against her entire community for him, despite knowing nothing about him. She risks everything for a man burdened by regret, shame, and secrets. Her compassion pushes Rykr to see beyond Seren’s origins, to embrace her flaws, and to confront his own—meeting his past and pain head-on.
Though their connection begins with a magical bond, it quickly becomes something far deeper. Despite the constant threats and uncertain future, Seren and Rykr find themselves drawn to each other by choice, by admiration, and by a desire that burns brighter than the danger surrounding them. Together, they risk it all—their lives, love, family, honor, individuality, and even the realm itself.
When I say I loved these two characters, I mean it wholeheartedly. Every thought, confession, vow, and whispered word hit—and even more so in the explosive final act. Seren and Rykr have everything they know or believe upended, set ablaze, doused, and buried beneath political conspiracies, betrayals by loved ones, prophetic revelations, and brutal trials designed to destroy them both.
This novel—the start of what will surely become a powerhouse series standing alongside ACOTAR, FBAA, ToG, Spark of the Everflame, and Quicksilver—ends with perfection. I’m left content yet cautious, relieved yet apprehensive, warm and fuzzy yet utterly shocked and suspicious. In short, I’m in my feels and loving every second of it.
Out November 4th, this book deserves all the praise, conversation, theorizing, and obsessing the book community can offer.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A huge round of applause, an audible squeal of delight, and a dash of swoon-worthy spice = an absolute success for Annabelle McCormack.
I am so incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have received an advanced copy of Carved In Crimson from the author! 🫶
It’s time to give a standing ovation to Carved In Crimson because this is a masterpiece at its finest and I am so beyond obsessed to the point that I had dreams about this book! 🥹💕 This book is everything I could have ever dreamed of with a dark romantasy with all of my favorite tropes imaginable: enemies to lovers, touch him/her and ☠️, hidden identity, forbidden love, blood oath, found family, slow burn, marriage of convenience, etc! 🫶
I was hooked from the very first line and I honestly could not put this book down! 😍 Rykyr and Seren both have my heart and I love them both immensely! ❤️ Seren truly is sound an incredible FMC and I love that she always stands up for herself and what she believes in even if that goes outside the expectations of what she is supposed to do. Rykyr on the other hand is such a guarded MMC but I love how he slowly starts to open his heart as the story progresses. The chemistry and love story between Seren and Rykyr is *chef’s kiss* 🤭🔥Don’t even get me started on the world building in this story is incredibly detailed and simply beautiful! 🥹 I truly am so beyond excited to continue this series because I need book two immediately after how this one ended! 😱🙊😳🤯
Fast, fierce with delicious twists, „Carved in Crimson“ throws you into the cursed forests of Lirien, where rebels, blood oaths, and inconvenient attraction collide. Seren Ragnall isn’t the perfect warrior, but she’s determined to prove herself worthy of her father’s legacy. That resolve gets tested the moment a Lirien soldier saves her life and she is honorbound to return the favor with the one thing she shouldn’t: an almost forgotten blood oath that binds them body and soul.
Only, her “captive” isn’t what he seems. Rykr Westhaven, exiled prince of Lirien, wears his secrets like armor—and when those unravel, so does everything Seren thought she knew. Condemned to brutal trials and hunted by friend and foe alike, the two are forced to fight side by side, through monsters, betrayals, and the inconvenient spark of something far too human.
Rich world-building, great side characters (I’m still bitter one didn’t make it), and tension that burns slow. Enemies to lovers. Bonded mates.
Rykr’s scent is spicy—clove and rosemary—and so in part is the book: impossible to put down.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I was hooked from the prologue!! The entire story was unique and the tensions between Seren and Rykr was amazing!!! The banter was bantering and anytime I see the words “my wife” I go feral!! Seren is trying to help find her sister who was kidnapped while with her and then she runs into Rykr who’s definitely an enemy BUT he saves her life so she feels she has to return the favor. This leads to her binding them together to keep her people from killing him and omg everything that happens after is wild! I was entertained the entire book and the ending was DIABOLICAL!!! I need the next book immediately!!
I basically NEVER give 5 stars but this one might deserve it. I'll give 4.5 for now and decide later when I reread before the next book releases! I received this book as an ARC and was very happy with how much I enjoyed it. So much world building and a unique magic system with a true enemies to lovers storyline. The ending had me in it's vices and I cannot wait to read more of Seren and Ryker's story ❤️ Way to kill it Annabelle!
4.5 stars!! Now THIS… THIS is romantasy done right. Strong characters, clever world building, secret identities, irrevocable bonds, and a slow burn romance that had me SWOONING. The end was brilliant, I’m dying for book 2. Absolutely recommend!!!
This had everything I could possibly love in a romantasy. A strong FMC. Marriage of convenience to a sworn enemy. Training for a deadly trial. Secret identity. Betrayals and unlikely allies. A juicy blood oath. Some fun fantasy creatures. A beautiful found family. And they were all done SO well. I loved every minute of this book. The ending was so fun too so I can’t wait for the next book!
This books was so good. At the halfway point I had a hard time putting it down. Seren and Rykr were star crossed and hot all at the same time. I can't wait to read the next book!
Absolutely loved this book! This book is everything. True enemies-to-lovers, political intrigue, loyalty, PLOT TWISTS, found family, elemental magic, and so, so many great characters. The world building is fantastic from the geography, to the creatures, to the magic system. The relationship development between FMC, Seren, and MMC, Rykr, is done so well. The hate to yearning, to can’t live without you is beautiful and believable. Seren & Rykr are both fierce and loyal protectors for those they love. The dramatic irony of what the reader knows versus each character creates such drama and suspense but yet there are still moments that will take you by surprise! Highly recommend!
Thank you to Annabelle McCormack for the early copy of this stunning book. All opinions are my own!
Holy moly, what a book! I devoured this one in just two days. There was so much action, tension, and plotting… the plot was plotting!
Ryker, the deliciously hot MMC every reader will want, and Seren, the strong, witty, and fiery FMC we all adore, completely stole the show. Add in a cast of unforgettable side characters, and you’re constantly questioning who to trust and what’s really going on.
The banter and quips? 🤌🏽 I was laughing out loud more than once! You’ll feel every emotion: annoyance, frustration, sadness, anger, fear, romance, and yes, the spice absolutely delivers.
Dive into a world of divided kingdoms and realms, complex powers and magical laws, political intrigue, deadly trials, and cursed creatures. Every character is loyal to a fault, fighting their own inner demons while navigating tangled alliances and dangerous truths.
And that cliffhanger! It leaves so much open for interpretation; bring on the theories! I can’t wait for book two and to see how everything unfolds.
Huge thank you to Annabelle the eARC. This one was absolutely fantastic!
Carved in Crimson completely pulled me in from the first chapter. The world-building is rich, vivid, and easy to sink into, and the plot stays engaging with a perfect balance of tension, magic, and emotion. I really loved the enemies-to-lovers dynamic — the chemistry and slow-burn buildup kept me hooked the entire time.
This book delivered everything I look for in fantasy: strong characters, high stakes, and a romance that actually adds to the story.
I was genuinely wishing I had book two in my hands already.
Phew. I devoured this book in just over 24hours. It had me gripped.
This is Annabelle’s debut into romantic fantasy fiction and what a debut it is!
Seren - our FMC lives in the cursed forests of Lirien - training to be a rebel warrior she lives by the Viori code and sworn to kill any Lirien loyalist she encounters. But a Lirien Soldier saves her life and is wounded by doing so. Seren then binds them together to save him from execution.
However, what Seren and the rest of her tribe don’t know is that he isn’t just any Lirien Soldier. Rykr- our MMC- is the exiled heir to the Lirien throne.
The tension between them simmers until it reaches boiling point and the words that come out of this man’s mouth just melted me. He is cheeky, charming and antagonistic and I’m with Seren in that he’s infuriatingly sexy.
The journey to two go on all the way to the end had me on the edge of my seat. The twists and turns I could not predict. I was screaming, shouting, gasping and threatening to throw my kindle across the room.
I absolutely loved that the side characters stood out too. They were described in such vivid detail that you knew who each of them was and got just as attached to them as the main two.
We get glimpses into the world, the magic and the history of this world but the main aspect of the book is of Seren and Rykr’s relationship and them overcoming their differences. The way the book ended though I know that book 2 will reveal more and more to us and I cannot wait to see what happens. My jaw was on the floor and I had to flip the page several times to make sure I had actually finished as that ending! Oh My God.
Thank you to Annabelle and Crowns of Chaos PR for giving me this early copy.
Carved in Crimson by Annabelle McCormack is my new favorite Romantasy - & yes, that’s including ACOTAR & Fourth Wing. It has reignited my love for this genre & I cannot wait for the next installment. Trust me when I say, this is THE next big book series.
All of the tropes we know and love are there, but not in a “gotta force this in” kind of way. The natural weaving of the storyline and believability of the plot lets you truly immerse yourself in the world, a feat only a few authors can accomplish.
Her writing? Impeccable. Character development? Top tier. Magic & fantasy elements? Best of the best. World building? You’ll be hard pressed to find her match.
I rarely get surprised more than once in a book, let alone 5 times within the last few chapters. I pride myself on being able to pick up on foreshadowing & unravel the mysteries before they’re ready to be opened, but Annabelle got me. I’m seeettthhhhing that the next book isn’t out until November, 2026…but I guess that’s what I get for signing up for the ARC. I’m sure it will be well worth the wait. 🫶🏻
*** 6 stars *** Please add this to your TBR IMMEDIATELY. I cannot express how fantastic this book is… but let me try.
Carved in Crimson is going to be a duology, but I wish it was going to be a TOG 8 book job because I want more than 2 books! I’m not entirely sure where to even start. This is going to be my read of the year and I’m on book 110!
This book had me laughing, squealing, grinning, crying, jaw dropping and swooning. The story is complex, intriguing, full of twists and turns, politics and an interesting magical world. Every time you think a twist has been explained, something else is thrown in there. The twists don’t stop until the very last page.
When I saw the glossary at the start I was put off - I don’t like taxing my brain too much - but I think it’s actually very easy to understand the world and I had it figured within a few chapters.
The FMC and MMC are a true enemies to lovers, slow burn, occasionally spicy, amazing couple. Seren is a fantastic FMC, strong with a smart brain and feisty attitude at times. She is curious, loyal, sassy and I want to be her friend please. Rykr is thrust into this life he hasn’t chosen, but leads with his heart, whether he means to or not. He is charming, loyal, brave and perfect for Seren. I loved their banter and how they broke down each other’s walls. I particularly enjoyed the element of distrust - they didn’t just trust each other the minute they caught feels.
The side characters in this are great. Who are the friends and foes!? You are literally guessing until the end. I loved the intrigue and guessing. The trials and fighting scenes were great. The spice was great - not loads and well placed. The tension though - top bloody tier!! This incredible book does have TOG vibes but in one book rather than 5! I’m not entirely sure how McCormack has managed to get SO much into a book without missing bits or making it feel rushed. There is not a moment of rest, the momentum keeps building from start to finish.
Annabelle McCormack is a new-to-me author but one who is now firmly on my radar. Boy can she write a fantasy novel. *chefs kiss* Please can I have book 2 like now Annabelle?!?
Thank you so much to NetGalley, Victoria Editing and McCormack for allowing me the pleasure of reading this ARC. #NetGalley #HeirsofLirien #CarvedinCrimson
Carved in Crimson, the first book in the Heirs of Lirien series, is a romantic fantasy set in Dreadwood - the forbidden forest that shelters the rebel Viori. When the exiled heir to the Lirien throne - disguised as Rykr Westhaven - is gravely wounded while saving Seren Ragnall, a fierce Viori warrior, she repays the life debt by binding them in matrimony through an ancient blood oath, unknowingly tying their fates together. This, in turn, leads them to face brutal trials, deadly enemies, and a growing attraction that threatens everything they’ve sworn to protect.
From the very beginning, I was completely drawn in. Seren is a strong, layered heroine whose loyalty and inner conflict make her unforgettable. Rykr’s quiet strength and hidden identity add tension and depth to the story. Their chemistry is electric, and the slow-burn romance had me turning pages late into the night. Watching them try to hold on to each other while duty and loyalty pulled them apart was both heartbreaking and beautiful.
The worldbuilding is rich and immersive. The cursed forests of Lirien are painted with vivid detail, and the stakes feel urgent and real. I especially loved the buildup to the Skorn Trials - the tension, emotional stakes, and how it all unfolded were intense and beautifully written. The dual POV added emotional depth, and the supporting characters brought in a warm sense of found family. The way the author slowly tied up loose threads with each reveal was masterful. The plot twists in the final 30%, especially toward the end, left me desperate for the next book.
Overall, Carved in Crimson is a thrilling mix of fantasy, romance, and rebellion. It swept me away with fierce loyalty, forbidden love, and trials that test the soul. With unforgettable characters, high-stakes action, and a love story that simmers beneath the surface, it’s a must-read if you love enemies-to-lovers and epic fantasy adventures.
Carved in Crimson is a delicious marriage-of-convenience romantasy that scratches the itch for high stakes, slow-build tension, and a magic system that feels familiar yet refreshing. Set in the fictional continent of Lirien, we follow Seren, a rebel fighter by blood and blade, who binds herself to a Lirien soldier after he saves her life. Cue banter, bad decisions, and sexual tension that keeps you turning pages.
Seren is sharp, stubborn, and painfully human in the best way. Her counterpart, our MMC Rykr, is navigating a complex situation—surrounded by enemies and forced to keep his cards close to his chest if he wants to survive. Despite that, we see the vulnerabilities he gradually reveals to Seren as trust builds between them. When the walls finally crack, it’s worth the wait.
Pacing-wise, the opening lands with immediate stakes, and the middle gives just enough breathing room to deepen relationships before the last act tightens the screws. The romance leans enemies-to-lovers and forced proximity with a side of duty vs. desire, and the chemistry works because it’s rooted in conflicting loyalties rather than just snark.
Worldbuilding is where this really shines. The continent of Lirien opens up slowly so you never feel lost in lore dumps. Cultural distinctions map to real-world vibes in a way that feels respectful and textured, making the world feel lived-in and diverse. Magic (elemental and blood-bound) is integrated into politics and personal stakes instead of sitting on top of them, which I loved.
Even in the slower, tender moments, the book hums with danger that keeps you anxious about what comes next. The monsters feel original and genuinely unsettling. And there are enough twists to keep you guessing.
The book ends on a cliffhanger, leaving us with plenty to speculate on. I am definitely looking forward to book two. If you like your romantasy with an edge, you are set with Carved in Crimson.
Thank you to Annabelle McCormack and Crowns & Chaos for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
