A 19-year-old boy gets sent to prison in 1970's Britain for a love affair with a 15-year-old boy in this dramatic account of the anti-gay legal practices of the time.
The action centers upon the boys' affair, its betrayal and the criminal and legal pursuit that follows. Above all I liked the portrayal of the older boy, for it's exactly how a young gay male would have felt and acted in the glare of such a vicious public exposure.
This disturbing tale of ostracism and isolation is a little bit undercut by an emphasis on the paternalistic rectitude of older adults as they work to make sure the older boy acts strictly within the confines of judicial proceedings.
The author is remarkably effective at portraying what homophobia feels like to its victims. It is this point of view that makes the book stand out for readers.
