Hitchens collaborated on five railroad mysteries with her second husband, Bert Hitchens, a railroad detective, and also branched out into other genres in her writing, including Western stories. Many of her mystery novels centered around a spinster character named Rachel Murdock.

'Cat's Claw' and 'Catspaw For Murder' are the same book!
Review of the Mysterious Press/Open Media Kindle edition (October 11, 2022) of the Doubleday hardcover original (1943).
It is perhaps a case for The Lone Librarian™ as the Goodreads series for the Rachel Murdock mysteries incorrectly lists Cat's Claw as #3 and Catspaw for Murder as #4. This throws out the numbering for all the subsequent books of which there were only 12 in total and not 13.
But otherwise, this is a standard entry for the series. Rachel is called to assist Prudence, the granddaughter of an old schoolfriend who has written to her asking for advice about a series of ominous notes which she has been receiving. Rachel's sister Jennifer tries to discourage any involvement but Rachel is soon on the road with Samantha the cat in tow. When she arrives at the home of Prudence and her sisters, murder soon follows.

There are some fairly unrealistic elements to this story, including one witness to a murder apparently not noticing that she was sitting in the same room with a dead body. Eventually Miss Rachel's friend from the LA murder squad Detective Mayhew is also brought in on the case and of course Miss Rachel ignores his cautionary advice until suddenly in the middle of the book she is apparently kidnapped along with her cat. But all is explained in the end, with cat Samantha providing a vital clue with a pawprint. Miss Rachel and her familiar continue to have nine lives and more!
Note: In the first 2 books, Samantha the cat was described as being of a marmalade colour. This apparently didn't suit the marketing and design staff for the book series, where a black cat constantly appeared in the titles and the book covers. In #3 Catspaw for Murder Samantha is suddenly described as being black.🐈⬛

Crestline è una località di montagna che in inverno assomiglia a una cartolina di Natale: neve bianca e morbida, montagne dalle pareti ripide e pericolose, chalet suggestivi.
Una mattina Miss Murdock riceve una lettera a dir poco inquietante. A scriverle è Prudence Mills, la nipote di una sua amica di infanzia. La giovane chiede il suo aiuto, poiché è venuta a conoscenza delle sue avventure investigative e non può fare a meno di aiutarla a decifrare il mistero che si cela dietro i biglietti inquietanti che sta ricevendo e che, oltre al disegno di mani deformi e mutilate, contengono dei messaggi impossibili da comprendere.
La sorella di Miss Murdock, Jennifer, non vede di buon’occhio questo nuovo viaggio, ma Rachel non può di certo lasciarsi sfuggire l’occasione di risolvere un altro mistero, soprattutto quando sente al telefono la voce sottile di Prudence, che si spezza in un pianto inconsolabile. È giunto il momento per Miss Rachel di lasciare nuovamente la casa di famiglia e di recarsi a Crestline per scoprire cosa sta succedendo.
Le ragazze Mills – Bertha, Nona e Prudence – vivono a Crestline due mesi all’anno, come da disposizioni testamentarie del padre, e hanno per vicini di casa gli ex soci del signor Mills, Andrew e Bonham Schuyer. Tra le due famiglie i rapporti ora sono freddi e tesi a causa di una disputa su delle terre che il signor Mills avrebbe dovuto acquistare per l’azienda, ma che invece ha preso per sé e che ha poi lasciato in eredità a Prudence.

La cara Miss Rachel non sbaglia mai un colpo!
Ormai non posso fare a meno di questa “saga” dei delitti della gatta.
In questa storia la nostra cara Miss Rachel insieme alla sua gatta escono dai confini californiani per recarsi in un posto più freddo.
Anche questa volta la Gatta e Miss Rachel saranno fondamentali per la risoluzione del caso.
Un giallo appassionate e scorrevole per nulla scontato, cosa che specie in gialli seriali può diventare un problema non da poco.
Ormai non posso fare a meno di questa “saga” dei delitti della gatta.
In questa storia la nostra cara Miss Rachel insieme alla sua gatta escono dai confini californiani per recarsi in un posto più freddo.
Anche questa volta la Gatta e Miss Rachel saranno fondamentali per la risoluzione del caso.

Un giallo ben congegnato e piacevole, con una protagonista alla Miss Marple coadiuvata dalla sua gatta, personaggio fondamentale.
Molto bella l'ambientazione montana, che dà alla storia un'atmosfera claustrofobica e sinistra.
Non arrivo a 5 stelle per due motivi:
- va bene la sospensione dell'incredulità, ma un'anziana signora acciaccata che si muove agilmente, di notte, con temperature sottozero è davvero un po' troppo;
- c'è un grosso buco di trama:
Leggerò senz'altro gli altri volumi della serie perché è stata comunque una lettura gradevole.

This series continues to be what you expect: an enjoyable read about a super-sprout 70-years-old amateur sleuth with her cat, dabbling in obscure family feuds unravelling in secluded locations.
In this episode, I particularly enjoyed some double-switches in the nature and intention of characters.

La storia mi è piaciuta ma avrei dovuto farmi uno schemino con i nomi subito perché faticavo a ricordarmi i personaggi, le caratteristiche, i legami di parentela, gli alibi ecc.

Torna Miss Rachel insieme alla sua gatta Samantha per risolvere un nuovo mistero.
Anche se la storia non brilla per profondità e ci sono sicuramente alcune sbavature (dire anche contraddizioni interne nella narrazione), per me questa lettura è sempre un momento rilassante e gradevole di stacco.
Per gli amanti della serie.
