This book presents some really good ideas, but it kind of felt like a big pile of concepts, not really a flow or progression. I've been feeling that way about books a lot lately, though, so it could be just me.

For me, the key takeaway here is the idea of focusing on the problem your reader is having--the "before"--and expressing it in your reader's language. It's so tempting to focus on the solution you want to tell people about and express it in your own language, but if you do that, it's much harder for people to realize this is the book for them. I think that's a really valuable insight.

Unfortunately, the chapter titles are all puns on song titles, so you can't just use the table of contents as a quick overview. Also, the book is peppered with pleas to email the author. I get that it's a lead-generation tool, but holy crap, way too much.

When I finished the book, I was left with that hazy feeling of "what did I just read?" That's a bit disappointing. I guess most of the steps are just mushy. About the only thing I remember is the constant harangue to email the author, and the point that struck me when I heard the author speak at an online self-publishing conference. Oh well.

I wish I'd known this book was targeted toward people who write self-help books. Not particularly useful for a fiction writer.

That's not the reason for my low rating, however. I did try to read it, figuring it wouldn't hurt to learn about a different kind of writing. It was the blatant self-promotion that put me off, the realization that this is nothing more than a glorified advertisement that was written in a single weekend. Waste of time, and I'm guessing her "incubator" program is a waste of money, too. There are plenty of great writing books out there that DON'T try to manipulate you into purchasing additional services.

This book is nothing more than one very long infomercial plugging her writing program, her publishing company. and other services. If I had paid for this "book" I would be screaming to get my money back.

Just what I needed to hear

Reset my perspective on my passion for writing and helped me understand the publishing process in a much less terrifying and practical way. I read it in one sitting, took copious notes, and regret nothing!

I loved this book. Angela gives 10 steps to writing a book that matters. Steps are often like a to-do list for me. It helped me check the things I was doing in a current book I was working on

Few points first: (1) I'm a client of Angela's and (2) I'm the Jenn referenced in Chapter 4 (yup - the weirdo organizing one)!
About the book: When Angela told me that she had written and was publishing The Difference, I was a little perturbed. I mean, I paid her a good amount of money to teach me the process and hold my hand through the writing of my book (which will publish March 10, 2015). Now, here she is, giving away the secrets!! But you have to know Angela to know that it is of utmost importance to her to help people get their message out into the world. This book is a labor of love. It is Angela showing her soul to the world. That reason, alone, makes this book worth the read. You can feel how much it means to her to give you the tools to write a book that matters. Another, better, reason to read this book is: it works. I have 3 unfinished manuscripts that have accumulated over years of wishing to be an author. Once I decided to hire Angela help me write the book the matters to me now - a completed manuscript was a done deal. Read this book. Then hire Angela to help you get it over the goal line. You won't regret it.

I love this approach to writing that turns writer's blocks into opportunities and gives you clear, understandable information you need to sit down and get that book written. I will be using this method on my next book, and I already feel clearer about what I want to write and ready (if not eager) to get started.
