Emiko Sato is a 27-year-old struggling artist, drowning in bills and running low on hope. Desperate for cash, she begins donating blood—until an unsettlingly attractive doctor offers her a much more lucrative arrangement.
Dr. Asahi Kurosawa is charming, brilliant, and just a little too interested in Emiko’s blood. His terms are simple: she’ll move into his mansion rent-free as his roommate, and in return, she’ll allow him to draw her blood occasionally for his private research.
But Emiko quickly realizes this isn’t a typical roommate situation. Asahi keeps odd hours, never eats, and avoids the sun. The tension between them is undeniable, and his attention borders on obsessive—but the more time she spends with him, the harder it is to stay away.
As her ex-boyfriend Ryu forces his way back into her life, Emiko is plagued by vivid, haunting dreams of a life she doesn’t remember. A mysterious past begins to unravel, tangled with ancient bloodlines, dangerous love rivals, and a bond that feels like fate.
Emiko must decide who to trust—the vampire who might own her heart, or the past that refuses to let her go.

My Gothic Roommate (Book 1) by Hana Tsukishiro is a contemporary paranormal romance that blends gothic atmosphere, forced proximity, and a slow-burning, blood-bound connection into a story that feels both haunting and emotionally charged. Set against the backdrop of a mysterious mansion and shadowed by secrets of the past, the novel leans into vampire lore, obsession-tinged romance, and the blurred line between survival and desire.
Where this book truly stands out is in its ability to balance eerie tension with intimate character dynamics. The relationship between Emiko and Asahi is layered with curiosity, vulnerability, and a quiet intensity that builds with every interaction. Asahi’s controlled yet obsessive nature contrasts beautifully with Emiko’s desperation and resilience, creating a dynamic that feels both unsettling and compelling. The blood-sharing element, while sensual, is also used to deepen their emotional connection rather than simply serve as a provocative device.
The pacing leans toward a gradual build, allowing the mystery surrounding Emiko’s past and Asahi’s true nature to unfold in intriguing ways. While the story occasionally lingers in its setup, this slower approach enhances the gothic tone and strengthens the sense of anticipation. The introduction of external conflict; particularly through Emiko’s ex and the hints of a larger, more dangerous history; adds tension that keeps the narrative engaging.
Because of this blend of atmosphere, emotional tension, and supernatural intrigue, the reading experience feels immersive and quietly addictive. The story doesn’t rush its reveals, instead choosing to let the weight of its mysteries and relationships settle, which ultimately makes the payoff more satisfying.
I would recommend My Gothic Roommate to readers who enjoy vampire romance with a darker edge, forced proximity tropes, obsessive love interests, and stories where past lives and fate intertwine. Those who appreciate a balance of sensuality, mystery, and emotional depth will likely find this especially engaging.
Overall, this is a moody, intimate, and intriguing start to a series that successfully combines gothic romance with emotional vulnerability; leaving just enough unanswered to make you eager for what comes next.
Hana Tsukishiro’s My Gothic Roommate is a quirky, heartfelt, and aesthetically indulgent blend of slice-of-life, romance, and gothic flair. It’s a story that thrives on contrast—sunshine meets gloom, chaos meets control, and cute meets creepy—in the best way possible. When the cheerful and slightly naive protagonist finds herself moving into a new apartment, she never expects her roommate to be the living embodiment of a Victorian ghost boy—pale, stoic, impeccably dressed in gothic lolita fashion, and seemingly allergic to sunlight. What starts as an awkward cohabitation slowly blossoms into a sweet, slow-burn relationship full of mutual curiosity, acceptance, and unexpected tenderness. This manga leans heavily into gothic and cozy-core aesthetics, with plenty of visual delight for fans of lolita fashion, tea rituals, and spooky-yet-cute moments. Think Tim Burton meets kawaii slice-of-life.The “opposites attract” trope is handled with charm and nuance. The gothic roommate isn’t just a walking stereotype—he’s layered, guarded, and vulnerable beneath her lace and sarcasm.Despite its comedic tone, the manga gently explores themes like loneliness, identity, and learning to coexist with someone radically different.Gorgeously detailed outfits, expressive faces, and dreamy panels make it visually captivating. My Gothic Roommate is a gentle, atmospheric gem that offers a feel-good romance wrapped in ruffles and shadows. It’s perfect for fans of cozy yuri, gothic aesthetics, or just anyone who enjoys watching two wildly different people slowly become each other’s safe space.
Absolutely loved this! Where do I even begin? Emiko is just such a lovely MC, and she always reads as a soft and lovely character that brings the sun towards you. Asahi is the cool and collective MMC (unless he's with Emiko~)then he folds like a lawn chair 🤭. The plot was super interesting, and I really loved the variation of vampires being made through a ritual over the usual "bite and die" method. it spices up the genre.
The spice? It really cranked up the heat at times, and there was so much of it. I really loved how Asahi has this caring and yet possessive tendencies to him, that made it all the more endearing. Characters like Ryu and Emiko's co-workers really made the world feel more lived in (and brought some drama and silliness ) to the more mundane parts of the book that I enjoyed.
Overall a really fun read that just made the pages fly by and really loved the world Asahi and Emiko lived in, I can't wait for book 2!
All in all I did enjoy this book and I will read the second one. The main thing I wish I knew before going in is it is slow. I don't mind if a book isn't fast paced and action from start to finish but if it isn't, I need a heads up to adjust my expectation of how the flow of the story will go. With vampires I did expect more action than what was in this book but also I can see why the slower pace to build the story as well.
Just note that there is spice in this book and that was one of the things I was pleased with.
Some of the things I didn't love:
1) the repetitive descriptive words especially when describing Ashai. After the first couple of times, I promise, we get it!
2) I didn't appreciate the hypocrisy of the allowances made for Ryu but not when the roles were switched.
3) the lore with the vampires in this story is interesting but we don't get more information about how the whole thing works and I would appreciate that because I have questions.
I had no clue what I was in for when I got this book. It wasn't anything like I normally read. It was amazing. Truly words can't begin to describe it. Each scene beautifully written to draw you in and having you clinging to your seat wanting and needing more. The smut was smutty. It was a work of art. I truly CANNOT wait for the rest of the series to come out. The twists and turns had me gasping and many times sitting up straighter i even put my kindle down at a certain scene needing a minute to process what I had just read. All I'm saying is Ryu her ex he needs to get his own story or side story that would make my little heart happy. He deserves happiness too since Emiko and Asahi are getting theirs.
umm so....a doctor who turns out to be a vampire?! most people would probably say it's bullshit but unfortunately i'm not most people ;) that definitely altered my brain chemistry
A great read. I truly enjoyed the vivid, in-depth descriptions, especially of the various settings that really draw you in. Emiko shone as the protagonist, with her intriguing traits and overall charm. There was always something fun or conflicting going on between the cast, showcasing the different dynamics.
I also appreciate the clear research that went into the hematology aspect; the fine details made the story feel all the more authentic and believable.
I’m excited to see how the story continues to unfold and how Emiko, Asahi, and the others navigate the new turns in their lives.
