This is the fifth book in this impressive series, and this is Aiden and Annie / Ceci’s story.
Aiden is team captain, and he and Annie have been best friends online for 7-years, but have never met, and never exchanged personal details. Aiden finds out that Annie and actually Cecilia, a billionaire tech genius, who has been working with his team on a groundbreaking helmet research.
This is a well written slow burn, easy to read story, with friendships, emotions, trust, reverse age gap, challenges, secret identity, insecurities, romance, engaging and relatable characters, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, hockey romance.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author in the future.

Ceci & Aiden
These two characters are everything. Instigator shares the story of Aiden and Ceci. The way they end up together, their meddling friends/family, their own uniqueness shined through so much. There is something about a mature female main character that does it for me. Ceci is strong, smart, driven, and yes a little bit of a workaholic. & when you have a character that's so driven that their focus is work love takes a backseat. & sometimes it's hard to find a partner that understands and supports your endeavors. Aiden does that and so much more. He is also unique. These two fit so well together once their lines of communication are open and they stop avoiding one another over simple things.
I really loved seeing their friendship blossom into love because each of these characters deserved the care they received from the author writing them. Allie always does an excellent job of ensuring the whole spectrum of individuals not only finds love but finds a love that fits them.
This book made me smile so much.

Overall with this series, I have really enjoyed the men of the Boston Grizzlies. Aidan is no different. I really did love him. I really enjoyed his friendship with Ceci from gaming to real life. Something about the transition of friendship to romance just didnt click for me and I dont really know why. I just found myself wishing for a later reveal so I could have seen the friendship being what it was longer.

I didn’t know this was book 5 of a series so there is a lot of backstory’s that I wasn’t privy to when reading. I liked the fact that this was neurodivergent but I just didn’t feel enough romance. Unfortunately this book wasn’t for me.

There was something so wonderfully different about Aidan and Ceci’s story. Instigator had all the things that make a sports romance fun, but it was the emotional connection between these two and the thoughtful neurodivergent representation that made this one stand out for me.

Thousands of hours gaming together have created a friendship where they can talk about almost anything, with one very important rule. No real names, photos, or identifying details. Neither realizes the person they know so well online is already becoming someone important to them in real life.
When Aidan discovers that Annie is actually Cecilia Ramos, the brilliant tech billionaire working with the Boston Grizzlies on helmet research, everything changes. The woman who challenges him, intrigues him, and has already caught his attention is also his best friend. I loved watching those two worlds collide. Online, being together is easy. In person, they are adorably awkward, incredibly attracted to each other, and suddenly trying to figure out what happens when seven years of friendship starts feeling like something much more.
Aidan was easily one of my favorite parts of this book. As captain of his hockey team, he carries so much responsibility, but socially he often struggles in ways other people don't necessarily understand. He is autistic, introverted, guarded, and still carrying the hurt from a past relationship. I really appreciated his journey toward becoming more comfortable with himself and realizing that he doesn't always have to handle everything alone. Beneath that grumpy exterior is such a patient, caring man, and once his feelings for Ceci become impossible to ignore, he is completely gone for her.
And Ceci was exactly the kind of heroine I love reading about. She is intelligent, successful, confident, extroverted, wonderfully chaotic, and unapologetically herself. She has ADHD, has worked hard to understand what helps her thrive, and is also trying to move forward from a failed marriage and the things that experience left behind. I loved that she wasn't waiting for Aidan to make every move either. Their personalities may be very different, but somehow those differences make them work even better together.
What I appreciated most was that neither character needed the other to "fix" them. Aidan and Ceci learn how to communicate, understand each other's needs, accept help, and give each other space when necessary. Their autism and ADHD are meaningful parts of who they are, but they are never the only things that define them. They are both incredibly capable people who happen to experience the world differently.
There is also something incredibly romantic about realizing these two cared about each other before they knew what the other looked like, how much money they had, or what they did for a living. Wish fell for Annie. Annie fell for Wish. They knew the person underneath everything else first, which made watching that friendship turn into love even sweeter.
Add in the Boston Grizzlies, Ceci's book club, wonderful found family, mutual pining, a reverse age gap, plenty of spice, emotional healing, and thankfully no unnecessary third-act breakup, and Instigator gave me so much to love.
Aidan and Ceci made me laugh, had me emotional, and reminded me that a happily ever after doesn't have to look the same for everyone. Sometimes finding your person means finding someone who sees exactly who you are and loves the life you create together.

ADHD and Autism have so many stigmas attached to those diagnosis and attitudes need to be changed. Authors who have the courage to write about these can affect change for the better.

Instigator by Allie Lasky is the fifth title in the author's Boston Grizzlies Hockey Club series and was a thoroughly enjoyable read following the endearing main characters of Aidan MacGregor and Ceci Ramos.
The story at its simplest is a sweet slow-burn reverse age gap hockey romance with Aidan, the team captain and Ceci, a billionaire tech genius, who are both high functioning professionals but struggle daily with their autism and ADHD respectively, to maintain and live up to their responsibilities and the expectations required of them both publicly and privately.
Through the dual POV writing I was invested in both characters from the get go as they transition from online to real life friends and stumble through all sorts of awkward social situations as they open up to one another and explore a romantic relationship, both emotionally and physically.
Both have bad past relationship experiences and are gun shy initially to put their feelings on the line but their strong foundation of friendship and willingness to communicate with one another sees their insecurities and hesitancy crumble as they realise that with their imperfections they are indeed perfect for one another.
The capacity Aidan and Ceci had to care for the other was a pleasure to read. Pair that with the author's exploration and sensitive use of ADHD and autism as integral parts of the characters and their interactions with each other, their friends and colleagues, all made for moments throughout that had me cringing at the awkward situations and conversations, chuckling with amusement at others, and also swooning at the warm heart felt break through moments for the both of them as they navigate towards a rewarding, comfortable relationship.
Chosen and found family feels with Aidan's teammates and their significant others, Ceci's bookclub friends and former colleagues and teammates turned friends, made for a wonderful world the story took place in as themes of respect, support and acceptance remained at the forefront as Aidan and Ceci inevitably get their well deserved HEA.

This was my first Grizzlies HC book, and it will not be my last. I was hooked by the first chapter and devoured the rest of the book as fast as I could. 4.5 ⭐, 3 🌶️, and a good balance of hockey v. life.
Billionaire baddie Ceci seemingly has a full and vibrant life filled with a book club for the ages and a board seat on the Grizzlies team working on a project to prevent head injuries in hockey, but something is always lacking. As a FMC in her 40s, she was diganoised with ADHD in her 30s, and that changed her world (something I sincerly relate to) because she finally knew why her brain wasn't like everyone else's, but even with that understanding, her closet relationship is a man she met playing video games online 7 years ago, and she just feels lonely--enter Aiden.
Aiden, the stoic captain of the hockey team, is struggling in his life because he feel like he doesn't measure up to the expectations and needs of his team and family while keeping his recent Austim diganosis to himself. Surrounded by people he knows cares about him but doesn't always know how to be the person they need, Aiden turns to the one person in his life who's always been there: Ceci's online alter ego, Annie. And boy oh boy does his brain break when he realizes the woman he's been talking to all along is also one of his long time crushes that he doesn't feel like he knows how to talk to. And the chaos that insues? Incredible, and also, so real and grounded in ups and downs of life. How does one balance a semi-work place relationship, a reverse age gap, and anxiety that grips them both? The simple answer: together, surrounded by the people who care about them, and taking chances to be vulnerable.
Those spicy scenes? So yummy. The team comradere? I must now read every book and can't wait for the next one. Their future? Fully convinced that they'll make it after the last page. Who doesn't love a man who just wants to support their more intelligent partner who (is older) and can take over the world? Chef's kiss. And if you're like me, who right now feels untethered about what comes next, Aiden and Ceci make me excited and hopeful for the life I live outside of books, and that is why I will keep coming back to the two and this team.

Boston Grizzlies Hockey Club: Aidan and Ceci
This took me a few days to read… Not because I wasn’t a fan, but because I had smaller blocks of time to read, and I really wanted to be able to sit down and just get through it in one or two sittings. I hate stopping and starting a book, and this is definitely one that makes you want to avoid interruptions!
I really loved Aidan and Ceci. There was so much growth for both of them, and while their struggles were certainly different (and some things were a little unexpected), they both felt very real. I loved seeing them work through everything and slowly figure out what they needed, both separately and together.
The whole online friends/secret identity thing was so much fun! Seven years of being best friends online, knowing basically everything about each other… except who the other person actually is. And then finding out that your online best friend is the woman you’re now working with? Yeah… that’s going to make things interesting!
And the mutual pining! I mean… come on. Aidan trying so hard to convince himself that friendship is all he can offer while clearly being completely gone for Ceci was just chef’s kiss. He may look grumpy, but this man absolutely worships her.
Ceci was fantastic too. Smart, successful, chaotic, neurospicy and completely unapologetic about who she is. I loved her.
It was a bit spicy, particularly later, but nothing that felt over the top. And it was also SO sweet. There were plenty of moments that made me smile, but also some more emotional ones that really pulled at the heartstrings.
Plus hockey, gaming, found family, baseball (and an almost unhealthy love of baseball)… what more could you want?
Another 5 stars from me! Allie Lasky has definitely done it again, and I absolutely loved this one.

I hate stopping and starting a book, and this is definitely one that makes you want to avoid interruptions!
I really loved Aidan and Ceci. There was so much growth for both of them, and while their struggles were certainly different (and some things were a little unexpected), they both felt very real. I loved seeing them work through everything and slowly figure out what they needed, both separately and together.
The whole online friends/secret identity thing was so much fun! Seven years of being best friends online, knowing basically everything about each other… except who the other person actually is. And then finding out that your online best friend is the woman you’re now working with? Yeah… that’s going to make things interesting!
And the mutual pining! I mean… come on. Aidan trying so hard to convince himself that friendship is all he can offer while clearly being completely gone for Ceci was just chef’s kiss. He may look grumpy, but this man absolutely worships her.
Ceci was fantastic too. Smart, successful, chaotic, neurospicy and completely unapologetic about who she is. I loved her.
It was a bit spicy, particularly later, but nothing that felt over the top. And it was also SO sweet. There were plenty of moments that made me smile, but also some more emotional ones that really pulled at the heartstrings.
Plus hockey, gaming, found family, baseball (and an almost unhealthy love of baseball)… what more could you want?
Another 5 stars from me! Allie Lasky has definitely done it again, and I absolutely loved this one.

4.75 stars. This story is dual POV, well written and edited, and a sweet and slow-building steamy, mutually unknown identities, awkward in person, contemporary sports romance between Aidan/Wish, the introverted younger male autistic professional ice hockey player and captain of his team, and Ceci/Annie, the extroverted older female ADHD tech billionaire associated with his team’s research project. I chuckled ruefully at some of the truly awkward interactions, especially at the beginning when neither character was aware they knew the other online. I enjoyed Ceci’s willingness to reach out initially, contrasted with Aidan’s determination to wait patiently for more. I enjoyed Ceci’s confidence in who she had become and her acknowledgement that medication helped her immensely and made her stronger and more capable. I enjoyed Aidan’s increasing comfort with himself and his identity, and his willingness to share that with others. I enjoyed his acceptance that he could learn to lean on others. I enjoyed the slowly building intimacy and the acceptance of disability and the capacity to accommodate it. I ADORED the chosen/found family feel, and the relationships with Aidan’s teammates, Ceci’s bookclub friends, and others. I enjoyed the non-standard ending that saw the characters content in ways that others may not understand.

Allie Lasky always brings the fun, the chemistry, the found family, and the heat you look for in a romance. The Instigator has it all but is more special in so many ways.
Ceci is brilliant, dedicated, and successful. She’s also 43, diagnosed with ADHA at age a late age, battling with perimenopause, and is sure she doesn’t want a relationship like her first failed marriage.

I’ll admit—I wasn’t sure what to expect when I saw that the MMC is autistic and the FMC has ADHD. But this ARC completely surprised me in the best way. I’m genuinely thrilled I got to read it early because now I can confidently tell the world this book deserves every one of its ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.
This story is all about perseverance and the reminder that struggling with a condition doesn’t make anyone less capable, less worthy, or less successful.
Aidan stole my heart. I wanted to hug him and reassure him that he was okay, that he was enough. There are so many people like him—people who don’t understand why crowds overwhelm them or why certain situations feel impossible—often because they’re living with an undiagnosed condition. His journey felt honest, tender, and deeply relatable. And once he found the woman he loved, he gave her everything.

I love the premise of this book where two people can become close friends without meeting in person. This author also did an amazing job of conveying the loneliness someone can experience while being surrounded by other people.
Ceci is introduced first and although she is brilliant and successful, a failed marriage has her questioning if she can trust someone enough to share her life again.
Aidan is team captain and surrounded by his teammates yet his inner monologue is full of his insecurities and loneliness.
Each of them have been online gaming for years under a nickname and have become best friends without realizing they are in the same city.
I found both characters to be relatable and became more invested each time they almost met. Once they connect their relationship is not immediately perfect. They have misunderstandings but they work it out. Most importantly, they accept each other as they are. There are no attempts to fix the other person, rather they modify their own behavior to adjust to the other’s needs.
I had not read the prior books in this series, but that did not impact my enjoyment or understanding. I am inclined to go back and read the earlier books just because I enjoyed this one so much.

Gaming, hockey, secret identities, and a romance I couldn’t put down? YES PLEASE! I honestly didn’t know how much I needed a gaming hockey romance until I read this one. The gaming aspect made this stand out immediately, especially since gaming is something I’ve enjoyed myself and still have plenty of experience with thanks to being married to a gamer.
I had so much fun watching these two fall for each other online without realizing just how close they actually were in real life. They’re living near each other, working within the same hockey team, and completely oblivious to the fact that the person behind the screen is someone they could literally run into. Once their online and real-life worlds collide, the chemistry is fantastic, and I loved watching their relationship develop beyond the usernames and screens.
But what really made this story special to me was the heart behind it. This series does such a beautiful job reminding readers that being different is not something that needs to be fixed. You deserve to be loved for exactly who you are, quirks, differences, and all.
A fun, fresh romance with gaming, hockey, great chemistry, and a message that makes your heart happy.

I’ve read several books by Allie Lasky now, and somehow each one still feels unique and fully keeps my interest.

This is Aidan and Ceci’s love story. It’s not the typical romance, it’s an age-gap story with real characters, people with complicated lives and illnesses. They have struggles and hang ups, but they have to deal with them and keep going because they have no other option. Ceci has ADHD, had lost a ton of weight and had reconstructive surgery, so has scars and has to wear spanx under her clothes. She’s also brilliant and a lonely billionaire. She’s quirky and fun and an extrovert, over 10 years older than Aidan. Aidan is a professional hockey player, captain of his team, and autistic. Social interactions are a struggle to him, but he tries. He is open, generous and genuine. His sister has several medical issues that put her in a wheelchair on worse days, and using a cane on other days. Their friends and coworkers have all sorts of issues. Everyone is imperfect in a sense, so they are real.
This book is a wonderful love story, there’s not only romantic love, but also love amongst friends and family. I think it deserves 10 stars for the way life and so many issues are presented and explored.

Lasky has a gift for writing strong, fully realized characters who feel like people you could know in your everyday life. Both leads navigate real challenges—mental health, medical conditions, and disabilities including ADHD and autism—and the representation is thoughtful, grounded, and never treated as a plot device. It’s simply part of who they are, and part of how they learn to trust, communicate, and show up for each other. The online‑to‑IRL dynamic is fantastic. The gaming moments and the tension of secret identities add to the story in fun ways.
This romance is full of heart and authentic characters whose journeys will keep you turning pages long after bedtime.

Ceci and Aidan came together in a beautiful and authentic way that really highlighted their strengths and how they found a romance that truly worked for them both.
There is truly such a depth of trust in the relationship that Ceci and Aidan build, and that was one of my favorite parts of this book. They continuously show up for one another in the best way possible through good and bad times. It was beautiful seeing their dynamic flourish and how it allowed them both to be their truest selves.
The mental health and neurodivergence rep in this book is incredible. Both Ceci and Aidan have their own struggles, but it never takes away from how worthy they are of love. I loved seeing them both support one another on their journeys while also encouraging healthy growth and coping mechanisms!

Ceci plays an online baseball game with a man she has never met. His screen name is WishIWas, hers is StatisticalAnomaly. They don’t know each other’s real names but she considers him to be her best friend. Her other friends are all in relationships and she is the last one left. Aidan is the captain of the hockey team. The coach tells him that he needs to help with a project that the team doctors are working on for helmet sensors- a project that Ceci is working on.

The first series I have read from Allie Lasky is the Boston Grizzlies series, and it has definitely hooked me right in. Ally Lasky writes strong female and male characters who face realistic, everyday challenges. Her stories explore important topics such as mental health, medical conditions, and disabilities, including ADHD and autism. The main characters in The Instigator, Aiden and Ceci, are strong in their own right. Ceci, is a tech billionaire navigating a failed marriage, confronting the trauma of her past, and struggling to believe in love again. Aiden, a professional athlete and captain of his team, is dealing with the possibility of losing his sister to his best friend while wrestling with whether to reveal that he is autistic. Their story made me laugh out loud, cry, and left me wanting more. The five stars were well deserved. I can’t wait to find out what Sinclair is dealing with in the next story in the Boston Grizzlies Series, One Timer.

Didn’t realize that this was part of a series wish I had known that before I started reading this book because there are a lot of characters and a lot of backstory that I did not know.
I did like how the characters met and I did like the development of their relationship however not that I want a third act break up, but I felt like that there was not any tension like it was too good to be true and I was waiting for the shoe to drop.
And while I do love that the book is very inclusive and talks about mental health and not being neurotypical, I felt like there was a lot of emphasis on that and not a lot on actual romance.
I did like the ending specifically the epilogue however, I do feel like we were left with questions about what her next chapter is going to look like work wise.
Overall, it was an cute story. It just didn’t quite get there for me and I wish I had known that this was book 5.

Instigator ( Boston Grizzlies Hockey Club Book 5 ) Perfection!! Just absolute perfection!! A emotional rollercoaster that hooks you from page one and does not let go !! This book , this entire series is just that and so much more. Aiden and CeCe - oh how these two had my heart 💜, oh how I was not prepared at all for how invested I was going to find myself and all the feelings I was going to experience. Smiling, laughing, crying, even yelling outta pure frustration and most definitely rooting so freaking hard .i loved the progression of their relationship, i loved how likable and relatable both were ( the fact that neither was perfect- that they had obstacles to overcome and personal challenges to face just like we all do . Add into that the hockey and secret identity aspect , the angst and the humor and the witty banter , the family and friendships. I have to say , I was not prepared for how their story would touch my heart and just resonate with me on so many levels .

I did not realize this was book 5 in the series before I started, but it was clear that it was just one in a larger world. There were so many names thrown around, I didn't even attempt to try and keep them straight. I feel like this author just isn't for me. It was a little too much After School Special meets Romance Novel. There was a lot of reference to the sister and her fiance, like their back story, and since I hadn't read any other books, it was just a lot, and I skimmed thru some of the run downs with other characters that just weren't very important to this story. I did like how they met and the small world aspects of it. But overall, this just wasn't for me. Some people may love all the inclusion that was involved, if that's something you specifically seek out in a book, this may be up your alley

i have loved every book in the Boston Grizzlies series and this was no exception. First, I do highly recommend reading the prior books. We see characters from the previous stories - which is my favorite part of reading a complete series - so there are alot of people involved in Aiden and Ceci's story. The two are virtual friends - have been gaming for 7 years together and I LOVED that they had the already established relationship and even how before the chose to meet up - they were revolving around each other in the same spaces. I adored that there was no second act break up - that they talked. Ceci is an older FMC and that added a layer that I really enjoyed reading. Even that she didn't have the typical sports romance FMC occupation. Allie did a great job creating space and story for Aiden and Ceci to get to their HEA in a way that I felt truly did them justice.

This book is two worlds that I didnt ever see colliding: hockey + gaming.
These two characters meet over online gaming and build a relationship under their online personas, not knowing that they live right by each other and work for the same hockey league. Funny how fate works like that, but sparks fly and you get to see these two amazing characters bond in real life and grow in their relationship. I also love the identity of this book, being different is okay and welcomed and everyone deserves their person who accepts and loves them for being themselves.This book was the perfect romance that inspired and filled my cup, Allie is so great at making you really fall in love with her characters.
