I enjoyed the first Brookstone book so much that I couldn’t wait for the second. I was not disappointed. Jim carried over from the first. He’s a local cop in Brookstone that everyone looks up to. He’s a patient man, dedicated to his job. Brock is new in town. He’s bought some neglected warehouses to remodel into small shops owned and run by local artisans, keeping the wealth in Brookstone. Brock is out and proud as a gay man. He’d seen heartbreak in a long- term relationship and after three years of just fooling around, he’s ready for something more. When he meets Jim, there’s an instant attraction but he knows Jim is straight. What he doesn’t know is he affected Jim as well, leaving him confused about everything he thought he knew about his sexuality. What I loved about this story was what Jim’s inner turmoil with his attraction to Brock. He questions his past with women, realizing that much of it left him unsatisfied. He worries about other’s opinions because he’s such a public figure, and he knows how small towns politics and gossip works. While he’s dealing with this, he’s getting to know Brock. The more time they spend together, the more they like each other. Plus there’s another mystery involved that keeps you guessing til the end. I hope Philip writes more books. His characters are multi dimensional, realistic, and very well relatable. The mysteries are not far fetched, and add a nice twist. The background characters are memorable and have depth without throwing off the focus of the story. Fantastic work!!
