Although she writes under the pen name J.K. Rowling, pronounced like rolling, her name when her first Harry Potter book was published was simply Joanne Rowling. Anticipating that the target audience of young boys might not want to read a book written by a woman, her publishers demanded that she use two initials, rather than her full name. As she had no middle name, she chose K as the second initial of her pen name, from her paternal grandmother Kathleen Ada Bulgen Rowling. She calls herself Jo and has said, "No one ever called me 'Joanne' when I was young, unless they were angry." Following her marriage, she has sometimes used the name Joanne Murray when conducting personal business. During the Leveson Inquiry she gave evidence under the name of Joanne Kathleen Rowling. In a 2012 interview, Rowling noted that she no longer cared that people pronounced her name incorrectly.
Rowling was born to Peter James Rowling, a Rolls-Royce aircraft engineer, and Anne Rowling (née Volant), on 31 July 1965 in Yate, Gloucestershire, England, 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Bristol. Her mother Anne was half-French and half-Scottish. Her parents first met on a train departing from King's Cross Station bound for Arbroath in 1964. They married on 14 March 1965. Her mother's maternal grandfather, Dugald Campbell, was born in Lamlash on the Isle of Arran. Her mother's paternal grandfather, Louis Volant, was awarded the Croix de Guerre for exceptional bravery in defending the village of Courcelles-le-Comte during the First World War.
Rowling's sister Dianne was born at their home when Rowling was 23 months old. The family moved to the nearby village Winterbourne when Rowling was four. She attended St Michael's Primary School, a school founded by abolitionist William Wilberforce and education reformer Hannah More. Her headmaster at St Michael's, Alfred Dunn, has been suggested as the inspiration for the Harry Potter headmaster Albus Dumbledore.
As a child, Rowling often wrote fantasy stories, which she would usually then read to her sister. She recalls that: "I can still remember me telling her a story in which she fell down a rabbit hole and was fed strawberries by the rabbit family inside it. Certainly the first story I ever wrote down (when I was five or six) was about a rabbit called Rabbit. He got the measles and was visited by his friends, including a giant bee called Miss Bee." At the age of nine, Rowling moved to Church Cottage in the Gloucestershire village of Tutshill, close to Chepstow, Wales. When she was a young teenager, her great aunt, who Rowling said "taught classics and approved of a thirst for knowledge, even of a questionable kind," gave her a very old copy of Jessica Mitford's autobiography, Hons and Rebels. Mitford became Rowling's heroine, and Rowling subsequently read all of her books.
Rowling has said of her teenage years, in an interview with The New Yorker, "I wasn’t particularly happy. I think it’s a dreadful time of life." She had a difficult homelife; her mother was ill and she had a difficult relationship with her father (she is no longer on speaking terms with him). She attended secondary school at Wyedean School and College, where her mother had worked as a technician in the science department. Rowling said of her adolescence, "Hermione [a bookish, know-it-all Harry Potter character] is loosely based on me. She's a caricature of me when I was eleven, which I'm not particularly proud of." Steve Eddy, who taught Rowling English when she first arrived, remembers her as "not exceptional" but "one of a group of girls who were bright, and quite good at English." Sean Harris, her best friend in the Upper Sixth owned a turquoise Ford Anglia, which she says inspired the one in her books.

Pátý potterovský průvodce přináší pohled na jednu z nejoblíbenějších potrhlých postav vůbec. Dozvídáme se o Lence a její roli v celém příběhu a neochvějné podpoře Harryho v jeho dobrodružstvích. Je to jedinečná a okouzlující mladá dáma, která si rozhodně nedělá níc ze škarohlídů. Lenka děti učí, že není nic špatného na tom, být prostě sám sebou.
Lenka se s Harrym poprvé setkává na začátku čtvrtého ročníku v Bradavicích. Harry si všimne, že je trochu zasněná a nekonvenční, když spolu sdílejí vagón do školy. Uloží si hůlku za ucho a čte časopis vzhůru nohama. Když ale Harry tvrdí, že se Voldemort vrátil, je jedna z těch, která ho viditelně podpoří. Díky ní se také více dozvíme o Bradavicích a havraspárské koleji, škrknách nebo strachopudech.
Ačkoliv je Lenka spíše vedlejší postavou, je v celém příběhu natolik výrazná, že se okamžitě stala jednou z mých nejoblíbenějších. Tento průvodce se mi ohromně líbil a připomněl mi hromadu zajímavých věcí, na něž jsem už za ty roky zapomněla. Přece jenom má člověk v paměti daleko víc filmová zpracování, přitom v té knižní toho bylo daleko víc. Proto si průvodce zaslouží 5 hvězdiček a velice se těším na další kousek.

For Harry Potter fans young and old, Pocket Potter’s is a wonderful way to become intimate with each of the characters in the Harry Potter series. Each character is described and given a back story. We learn about Luna and her role in supporting Harry through his adventures. She is a unique and delightful young lady.
Luna first meets Harry at the beginning of her fourth year at Hogwarts. He notices that she is a bit dreamy and unconventional, when they share a train carriage to school. She stores her wand behind her ear and reads upside down. However, when no-one else believes that the wizard has seen Voldemort, Luna supports him.
We find out more about other Houses at Hogwarts, as Luna shows Harry the entrance to Ravensclaw. You have to answer a puzzle to enter the door, as Ravensclaw students’ values are wit, learning and wisdom.
There are many more examples of Luna and Harry meeting. We examine details about Luna that have not been told before. These are lovely additions to the original series and certainly expand knowledge of the minor characters in the book.

I was excited for the Luna Lovegood Pocket Potter, but it didn’t fully work for me.
The illustration of Luna felt off, she looked more like a LOTR elf than Luna, especially with the ears.
The other characters also felt oddly drawn and unfamiliar. (Especially Harry!)
There were too many quotes compared to previous Pocket Potters, and some lacked enough context.
Even having read all the books, I struggled to place a few of them.
Lovely concept, but this one didn’t quite capture Luna’s essence for me.
The illustration of Luna felt off, she looked more like a LOTR elf than Luna, especially with the ears.

This is a cool and clever way to introduce young readers to the wizards and witches in the original books or to refresh the memories of former readers. Luna is the fifth in the series, with the 32 pages covering her entire life up to the final year at Hogwarts. She is not as interesting to me as others and I would have preferred a book on Hagrid, but the book is filled with colorful illustrations and pictures with accompanying text at grade level. Still an excellent series!

No estoy a favor de la autora (ya sabéis porqué) pero tenía este libro por la estantería, en inglés, y me ha gustado mucho. Es conocer a Luna mucho más de lo que sabíamos de ella de los libros de la saga.
Adoro mil a Luna y necesitaba tener este libro (al ser inglés me ha venido genial para practicar para los exámenes).
Es un cuento corto que sirve para desentrañar a los personajes del mundo de Harry Potter (hay varios personajes más).

Learned a lot I either didn't know or hadn't recalled about Luna. I thought she wore radish earrings not dirigible plums, even though it would make more sense (oddly enough) for her to be wearing the plums. I didn't know the Lovegoods believe dirigible plums enhance the ability to accept the extraordinary.

Luna is such a fun character, I'm glad that there is a Pocket Potter for her. I really appreciate how these books hint at things that happen in the original series but don't ever give anything major away, and I love all the fun quotes at the end of every book.

If you don’t 💗 Luna, you’re just plain ‘loony’. I had to buy this one for my library, as Luna is my favorite Harry Potter character. These little biographies of the Potter characters are just amazing and the illustrations really tell their own story.

This is my 5th Pocket Potter's book I've had the pleasure of reading and I would say, so far it is my favourite. A great addition to any Harry Potter fan and a fantastic way for children to learn about Harry Potter and his friends
