“They embraced, weeping like men who had lost everything — and had just found what mattered most.
Father and son, together once more”

This was a really nice tool to have along side the Main book. The Poetry is beautiful but can be hard to cipher through it. This simple translation was a great partner to help me understand the plot, who is who, and the Ancient Greek significance of what is included in Homer’s tale. Like a study guide while reading! Would suggest it for those tackling the Odyssey. I don’t think I would have liked it as much.

It was a good taste of humility to read the first 200 pages of Fagles translation and realize I feel I am missing so much more depth because I am so focused on making sure I am getting the story.

When it comes to old literature of the West it is always helpful to have a guide on the journey. Since it is a journey that will reveal who you are! We can’t miss what we are meant to find!

Didn’t finish the original version, as it felt very long-winded and hard to read. Reading this version in modern language was MUCH better. Able to finish 2/3 of the book in under an hour. An interesting story that I didn’t realize was mostly told through flashbacks. Don’t think I’d read it again, but a good classic to read, nonetheless. Loved the commentary on why things mattered according to social norms of the time, as well.

Short but clear interpretation

It doesn’t have the same impact as the original poem, but it certainly is clearer and much shorter. I’m not really sure how I feel about it, except that I’m missing something.

Great guide!

Enjoyed reading this as a guide while simultaneously re-reading the Odyssey. Really helped with catching up right before the movie comes out.
