Hitsuzi Yamada (山田 ヒツジ, Yamada, Hitsuzi) is a Japanese cartoonist, best known for the manga series The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today, which debutted in 2018.
I’d call this pretty much the same as the rest of the series, but there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. It doesn’t achieve that heart-tugging pathos of earlier volumes, but it continues to succeed on its significant charms.
One of the more enjoyable developments this volume is that Saku manages to get some of her own reliable moments where she comes through for Yukichi instead of the usual scenario where he picks up her slack.
This comes through in the first story, a fun number about a lottery for merchandise, and a later one about fast food that features a delicious betrayal that isn’t what it seems, of course, but does let Yukichi get classically stressed out.
Rio has a good chunk of time in the volume as well, as she learns to love music and singing again after she accidentally goes viral. Her relationship with Yukichi is fun, although less so than her crush on Saku.
There’s also a really enjoyable storyline with a thunderstorm that brings a bunch of little smaller plotlines together with the weather as a bit of connective tissue. It’s not amazing, but cozy, much like the whole volume.
None of this made me stand up and go ‘wow’, but it did give me a smile and a chuckle and just had that general sense of a good, comfy book. It wisely has the ability to not just be about the same thing, offering enough variation so it doesn’t get stale. That’s harder than it seems.
4 stars - having done the work to make me care about most of these characters, it’s really nice to just sit back and enjoy them doing their thing. Baseline for the series, but it’s a strong read.
This series about a working girl, her cat, and their friends, always makes me laugh a little. All the storylines move forward a bit. The cat gets frustrated with fast food. They're both a little scared of thunderstorms. And as always, people are trying to be matchmakers. it's just life (well, life with a human sized cat) but it's funny and kind.
