The afterlife’s sassiest spirit guide is about to slay Paris.
All she has to do is wrangle a few wayward souls—including her own.

Fresh off a solo incarnation of self-imposed solitude, spirit guide Pearly Gates is trying to follow the rules—or at least appear like she is. But when her first official charges—a prickly retiree, a guilt-ridden widower with a closeted grandson, and a young woman for whom romance has never quite clicked—hit a spiritual dead end, Pearly makes a bold move. She nudges them into a group tour of the City of Love…then tags along in disguise.

Her boss is not amused. The deal? If Pearly can raise their spiritual vibes by the end of the trip, she wins the freedom to guide her way. If not, it’s back to cosmic waste management. No pressure.

From midnight snacks to museum flirtations, moonlit magic to Pride celebrations, Pearly’s meddling sparks transformations she never expected. And when her ex-soulmate signs on as their tour guide—hoping to reconnect—she’s forced to reconsider the walls she’s built around her own heart. Can they finally break their old patterns, or are they doomed to repeat history all over again?

Set in present-day Paris, The Midnight Croissant is a warm, inclusive fantasy celebrating love in all its forms—full of found family, fresh starts, and the magic of showing up as your fabulous, flawed, self.

The Good Place meets Amélie—with glitter.
This book sparkles as a standalone, while also continuing the Pearly Gates series.

I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy of Midnight Croissant, and I genuinely adored it.

This book is a rare thing: deeply funny, emotionally generous, and quietly profound all at once. Bonnie Solomon has created a world that is wildly imaginative on the surface, a bureaucratic, glitter-flecked afterlife full of cosmic HR departments and soul metrics, but at its heart, this is a novel about compassion. About what it really means to guide someone without controlling them. About love that makes room instead of taking over.

Pearly Gates is an absolute triumph of a protagonist. She is bold, hilarious, deeply empathetic, and achingly human despite being very much un-alive. From the first page, her voice crackles with confidence and vulnerability, camp and sincerity. She’s the kind of character you want to follow anywhere, not because she’s perfect, but because she’s trying. Trying to help. Trying to love better. Trying to stay herself in a system that keeps asking her to sand down her edges.

What surprised me most is how grounded the emotional arcs feel. The three human charges Pearly guides are richly drawn and quietly devastating in their own ways. Their struggles feel real and lived-in, and the book treats them with immense tenderness, especially when exploring grief, aging, identity, queerness, and the pressure to live a life that looks “right” from the outside.

The romance in this novel is sneakily perfect. Pearly and Thunder have that lived-in, exes-who-still-know-your-soul energy, equal parts tenderness, awkwardness, and unresolved sparkle. It’s funny, heartfelt, and just romantic enough to make you grin without rolling your eyes.

The humor is sharp and joyful, but never at the expense of heart. Even the funniest moments are doing emotional work. And when the novel slows down, when it lets itself sit in longing or uncertainty or growth that isn’t linear, it’s incredibly moving.

There’s a confidence to this book that I admire deeply. It knows exactly what it’s saying: that intuition matters, that softness is not weakness, and that growth cannot always be measured on a spreadsheet, whether earthly or cosmic.

By the end, I felt lighter, seen, and oddly hopeful, the kind of feeling that lingers after you finish a book and makes you want to press it into someone else’s hands and say, “You need this.”

I’ll be thinking about Pearly Gates for a long time. I hope this is just the beginning of her story.

There’s something incredibly special about returning to a series that already feels like home and The Midnight Croissant absolutely delivered on that feeling and more. This sequel to Pearly Gates proves that Bonnie Solomon is not only an incredible author but one who keeps leveling up with every book she writes. The Midnight Croissant follows Pearly Gates the afterlife’s sassiest and most compassionate spirit guide as she takes on a new challenge that lands her right in the middle of present day Paris. Tasked with guiding three very different souls. A retiree, a guilt ridden widower with a closeted grandson and a woman for whom love has never quite clicked. Pearly bends the rules just enough to help them rediscover joy, connection, and possibility. When their spiritual journey stalls she nudges them into a group trip to the City of Love and secretly tags along. What unfolds is a cozy and deeply heartfelt story about transformation, found family, and the bravery it takes to open yourself up to love whether that love is romantic, platonic, or self directed. Pearly’s guidance never ceases to amaze me. Watching her navigate these souls with humor, empathy, and just a hint of chaos reminded me why I adore her so much. I could genuinely read fifty of these adventures and never get tired of them.Paris as a setting was such a perfect choice. One of the most important aspects of this book and something I deeply value as a reader is its inclusion of queer characters and queer stories. Representation matters and Bonnie Solomon handles it with so much care, tenderness, and authenticity. These characters aren’t reduced to tropes they’re allowed complexity, growth, fear, and joy. Stories like this remind us how powerful it is to see yourself reflected on the page.Beyond the magic and romance, The Midnight Croissant is also a story about trusting your gut and following your dreams even when it feels risky. It gently reminds you just how strong you really are and how much can change when you choose to believe in yourself. This book was everything I wanted it to be. Bonnie Solomon continues to prove that she’s a master of blending humor, magic, and meaningful storytelling. If you loved Pearly Gates, this sequel will absolutely steal your heart and if you’re new to the series, consider this your sign to start. ✨🥐💖 Comes out April 14th 2026!

Last year, I had the absolute pleasure of discovering Bonnie Solomon and her beautiful novel, Pearly Gates. I read Pearly Gates as an arc and fell in love with Pearly and Solomon's extraordinary writing. Pearly Gates became one of my top ten reads of 2025, and now The Midnight Croissant, the next installment in the series, has become my first five-star read of 2026. The Midnight Croissant is every bit as heartwarming and fun as Pearly Gates, and dare I say even more profound.

As soon as I opened my Kindle and read the first page of The Midnight Croissant, I was immediately drawn back into Pearly's world. You know that feeling when you haven’t seen a good friend or relative in forever, and then you meet up with them and pick up right where you left off? That’s the feeling starting The Midnight Croissant gives you: comfort, warmth, and coming home. It was like Pearly, and I bumped into each other in a coffee shop, and she started filling me in on all she’d gotten into since we last spoke, and let me tell you, it was a lot.

Pearly is a bona fide spiritual guide now; she’s got the robe and everything. She also has a new supervisor, Mildreth Snaggs, who doesn’t exactly appreciate Pearly’s fabulousness. Pealry also has three new spiritual charges, and this group might be even more challenging than the group from the last novel. Their auras aren’t it, and it’s going to take Pearly and all of her larger-than-life sparkling personality to turn things around and level them up. In a bid to keep her job, which is hanging on by a thread thanks to Mildreth’s rancor (the woman has no joy in her) at Pearly and her methods, Pearly bets Mildreth that she can increase her charges' vibrational auras in 10 days by leading them all on a trip through Paris. What follows is an emotional tour through the City of Lights with Pearly and her three emotionally fragile wards that will have you laughing, crying, and wanting to book the next flight to Paris.

Much like I did with my past review of Pearly Gates, I don’t want to go too much into story specifics because I think that the joy of reading a Pearly Gates novel is going along with Pearly for the ride and being pleasantly surprised at all the wonder unfolding. Just know that there is plenty of joy, romance, and plot twists to keep you invested and that Bonnie’s writing is wonderfully rich and inviting. She makes you feel like you are right there with Pearly exploring the beauty of Paris and connecting with other souls on this wild ride called life and The Midnight Croissant.

With The Midnight Croissant, Bonnie Solomon has taken everything that made Pearly Gates so wonderful and added to it. There’s more emotion, more laughs, more drama, and thanks to the return of Thunder, Pearly’s soul mate through multiple lifetimes, more romance, too. The Midnight Croissant and the Pearly Gates series is perfect for anyone who needs to feel joy, hope, acceptance, and a generous helping of glitter.

Thank you so much to Bonnie Solomon for the opportunity to read a very early arc of The Midnight Croissant.

Reading this book was an absolute joy. There’s not much this book doesn’t bring to the table. The amount of depth, diversity, humor, found family, romance, transformation, bravery and 2nd chance arcs (multiple) were handed out in a way that continuously had me pausing progress to really let that breathtaking gift in and fully hear it and appreciate it. I was transported to Paris, enchanted by the characters and really felt their journeys.

Bonnie Solomon must have two brains in her head to have produced this complete triumph of a story.

4.5 glitter-bomb stars

I requested this book because it sounded cute, I love to support indie LGBTQIA+ authors and my library holds weren’t yet in …… then when I pressed play, I was unhappy to learn that the author was reading it herself. Usually, this results in disaster and huge disappointment.

At first, I grudgingly accepted that the author was doing a reasonable job of bringing her characters to life - though I didn’t know if I could embrace a book so entirely camp!

By halfway, I was completely invested. The characters played off of each other so well. They got more vulnerable and embraced personal growth, all while having fun, overcoming obstacles and cracking wide open.

By the end, I was both cheering AND crying!

Highlights included characters of all ages, paths, and identities. I ADORE that this (audio)book includes amazing Ace and AroAce characters, and showcases love of all types (romantic - queer and straight, family, found family, friendship, mentorship, etc).

Honestly, so happy to have found this author. This book was so full of wholesome, heartwarming, inspiring moments and brought me so much JOY!

Well, everything except the absolute butchering of French in the narration!!

Huge gratitude to NetGalley and the publisher, Bonsol Press, for an AudioARC of this book, in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC copy of the audiobook version.

This book encapsulated the energy of a lot of my favourites. I got the Good Place vibes right out of the gates and have recently discovered I kind of love cozy fantasy. A sucker for stories about the afterlife and the idea that we continue to have the same human struggles after we die. I’m still not sure if this arouses hope or despair, but will continue to devour such stories until I figure it out. The exploration of sexuality and relationships was done well and only added to the story. I will eagerly await more from Bonnie Solomon.

This was such an unexpected delight. This book is deeply emotional and moving while also being weirdly funny and endearingly cheesy. 4.5 rounded to 5 ⭐️

I didn’t realize this is technically a sequel in the Pearly Gates universe and read it as a standalone. This really works as a standalone and I can’t wait to go back and spend more time with Pearly Gates!

This book was written and narrated by an independent queer author, Bonnie Solomon, and was like a warm cup of coffee for the soul. I can’t wait to read more by this author!

Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to the audiobook The Midnight Croissant.

It was extremely unfair of me to keep Bonnie Solomon’s request to review her second novel for the post wisdom teeth (yes plural) extraction days of hell. So it’s even more impressive that the one and only Pearly Gates once again captured my heart and filled me with pure joy. If you loved Pearly first time round you’re sure to fall for her harder in this instalment she is truly fabulous. I laughed I cried I appreciated all the messages and I’m really just blown away. I cannot recommend her enough, I feel really guilty that I don’t have more words to put down here, I’m truly in a world of pain……..

Huge thanks to Bonnie Solomon for dropping into my emails and offering me an advanced copy to listen to via BookFunnel, I truly appreciate you 🫶

I just finished my advanced copy of The Midnight Croissant and am filled with joy. Bonnie Solomon’s vivid characters gather in the city of love with the fantastic, bombastic Pearly Gates, an interstellar spirit guide whose goal is to help them value exactly who they are. And they’ve only got so long before some evil forces crush their chances!

I love Paris, but this story gave me an even broader perspective. The group’s wild adventures immerse the reader in the city’s history, architecture, fashion, and food (Oh, the food!), not to mention some sweet amour. And when you come from all stripes of the rainbow, as they do, it means a lot to learn that there’s a place for everyone in this world. I identify as LGBTQ+, but you don’t have to. Anyone can get on this ride and know they are worth being loved and accepted.

Book: The Midnight Croissant
Author: Bonnie Solomon

Genre: Sci Fi & Fantasy, LGBTQIA+, Humor & Satire
Series: Pearly Gates Series
Setting: Paris
POV: Main Character POV

My Thoughts:

This novel is one that embraces the joys of drag, life long friends, LGBTQIA+ identity, and change throughout lifetimes. After reading book one, “Pearly Gates,” I have been very excited for the second addition to the series. My emotional attachment to Pearly continues in this story!

Pearly is tasked once again with helping her charges find peace and renew their view of life (i.e. increasing their aura). Pearly strikes a deal with her supervisor that she will raise her charges' aura by one level in ten days in Paris, the city of change and love. From pretending to be a travel vlogger (and ex-cruise ship member), Pearly must navigate the trials of her charges and her feelings for her previous soulmate, Thunder.

This story really dove into Pearly’s character in her new found role but also helped to embody themes of grief, longing, sexual orientation, coming out, and change. Pearly found herself trying to look at her charges as human beings, who are trying to move past their past and embrace their futures. Each charge/human I was able to find pieces of my personal story and was able to resonate with them – Solomon does a fantastic job in creating characters that many people can find themselves in.

As for the audiobook, Solomon narrates and really adds layers to Pearly’s personality that would not have been seen reading only the text. Pearly is narrated as quirky and high energy that I found to be entertaining and lovable.

I cannot recommend this novel enough if you would like Y2K, a splash of Paris cuisine and culture, and to see pure LGBTQIA+ joy. While it is uplifting and beautiful, you may find that it is also deeply emotional and leads you as a reader to navigate the world and the frequent changes around yourself a bit different -- the Pearly way <3

A special thank you to Bonnie Solomon, Bonsol Press, and Netgalley for an audio ARC and eARC of this story in exchange for an honest review

Pearly Gates is a bombastic and uncompromising protagonist, who always has a one-liner up her sleeve. (Seriously, someone with that name just has to be a little extra, right?) If that sounds good to you, you'll love this book.

Pearly is a spirit guide (think non-denominational guardian angel) and heavenly bureaucracy stuck her with a boss who's a stickler for the rules. The thing is, Pearly is very much an out-of-the-box person so while she tries to get her job done without going up against her boss, by-the-book was never going to work for her.

The resulting story is hilarious and over-the-top (whether you think that's a good or bad thing is up to you), but it's also going for heart. I personally feel like the vibes are more rom com than cozy(in a good way!), and there were moments when I wasn't really on board with Pearly's general sense of humor, but the book was still a fun distraction.

“Well”… “if they run out of chandeliers, you can always h*ng yourself from the ceiling”

So much I can say about this book. I randomly requested the digital arc for the first one a while ago because the cover caught my interest. It was so much more than it seemed like it would be. There’s so much depth and understanding of the human connection in this book/ series. You feel seen/heard in a way that most books can’t accomplish. There are so many iconic lines from this one.

“I saw god and he was laminated in butter”.
“Breaking news: Paris cancels croissants because you’re the only snack they need”

This book has growth, body doubles, cosmic retribution, baked good, and sparkles. What more could one need?

Pearly Gates is back! This sequel to my favorite book from 2025 did not disappoint.

Pearly has learned to love herself as a strong, independent woman after her soulmate, Thunder, left her at the beginning of the first novel. She’s a spirit guide to three people, and she’s struggling to make any progress with them. That’s enough stress, but add to that that her boss is looking for any reason to get rid of her. In a desperate move, Pearly makes a risky deal with her boss. If she succeeds, she has freedom to do as she pleases as a spirit guide, if she fails, she’s done. What follows is an absolutely beautiful story of learning to love yourself, having courage to speak up against those who do wrong, and finding the ability to love another again.

Pearly’s trip to Paris to guide her troubled souls is full of fun, humor, and love. Pearly might be unconventional in her methods, but she is very good at them. I loved the spirit of this story. I loved the characters in this story and their journey. I loved the writing that draws the reader in and makes you stay up late at night for “just one more chapter.” Most of all, I loved Pearly. She not only guides her charges, but in the process, she realizes that maybe it is time that she let herself love again. She is such a fantastic character and I can’t wait to see what she gets up to next.

Bonnie Solomon has written another fantastic novel, setting the bar high for her future works!

If you haven’t read the first book in this series, please do, it is absolutely fantastic as well.

The Midnight Croissant is a big-hearted fantasy about love and acceptance. Pearly Gates, a shepherd of souls, decides that her charges need something extraordinary to boost their spirits, so she makes a bet with her nemesis and arranges a trip to Paris. So much fun! All the characters from the first book are back, but don’t let that stop you (if you’re new to the series) from discovering the magic of Pearly Gates in this feel-good romp. I will follow Pearly’s adventurous spirit anywhere!
Excellent outfits plus excellent audiobook narration by the author. I was in Paris recently and this brought me back to my visit and to those buttery croissants.

3.75 ⭐

I got the ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to Bonnie Solomon, the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC. All thoughts are my own.

As soon as I searched this book on Goodreads, I saw the word ‘cosy’ left and right. The reviews built an expectation of this book being some sort of a fuzzy, comfy blanket or a warm, long hug. Were these reviews truthful? Yes! 🫂 I will honestly review this book. So, let’s go! ♡

First, a quick introduction to the book. The MC is a spirit guide named Pearly. She has an idea of taking all of her official charges (people) on a group tour in Paris. On this group trip, each person goes through a personal transformation. We also observe Pearly’s personal growth as well.

Let me start by telling you my opinion on the audiobook. Bonnie Solomon narrated her own book, how cool! Her pronunciation is perfect. If English isn’t your first language, I think you won’t have any trouble understanding her. (That, of course, depends on your level.) Her usage of word stress and inflection was pretty good. This is crucial in audiobooks; otherwise, it becomes almost impossible to focus. At some parts, I felt like I was listening to a voice memo from my friend, which enhanced the cosy and friendly atmosphere. So, great job! However, at some parts, the pacing was too fast, and her voice sounded a bit robotic, which indeed made it hard to focus. Especially with the story pace, the first 20% of the book was a bit hard to get through for me. I’m not sure I would have continued if it weren’t for this review. But, good news: After the first 20%, the book became really interesting, and I’m so happy that I continued. 🩵

The writing is just… so beautiful. Listening to this audiobook with my eyes closed, I teleported to Paris. Her descriptions are so smoothly detailed. By smooth, I mean it was detailed but it wasn’t overwhelming. She perfectly captured the essence of being in Paris. I felt like I was inside the book. 💖 Paris is used a lot for romance books. I don’t know how Bonnie Solomon managed to do this but Paris didn’t feel cliché at all! She didn’t focus on all the lovey-dovey parts of the city, but rather the historical aspect of it. And FOOD!! I swear I could taste the macarons as she was describing the flavours. She perfectly described the smell, the taste, the aftertaste of all the foods… Is she secretly a chef?? Overall, amazing job with the descriptions.

When the characters had their breakthrough and emotionally heavy conversations, there were MANY great quotes and passages about life, God, luck, evil vs good, self-love, bravery… I wish I had the physical book just so I could highlight those passages and read it whenever I’m having a hard time. For me, these conversations did truly feel like a hug. It was so healing to listen to these parts. There is a lot you can take from this book and reflect it to your own life. I’d love to share some quotes but I’m not sure if that continues as a spoiler so…

I’m not sure if this is because I haven’t read the first book, but I didn’t feel any chemistry between Pearly and Thunder. Thunder actually felt like an NPC to me. I, as a reader, didn’t feel any warmth towards him as an independent character as well.

When I read the description and the blurb, I expected a romance book. I, however, wouldn’t classify this book as a romance. If you are expecting a BookTok romcom kind of book, this is probably not the book for you. I would say this book is more focused on self-growth, character development, and discussions around life. I loved this aspect of the book.

There were a lot of popular culture references in the book. Even though I liked some of them, at times (for me) it disrupted the magical and mystic atmosphere of the book by reminding me of the ordinary, Muggle life. I am also not the biggest fan of swear words in books because of the same reason.

The reason why I gave this book a 3.75 ⭐ instead of a 5 ⭐ is because of the pace. The first 20% and the last 30% were slow-paced for my taste. I think some chapters were too long.

I’d recommend this book to anyone who loves a slow-burn, emotional relationship (doesn’t have to be romantic), and deep convo’s. The physical copy of this book would be perfect to read on a rainy day while sipping tea!☕️

P.S. : I feel like the book could’ve had a better cover. The cover doesn’t really reflect the content of the book; it doesn’t do justice to the writing and the themes of the book. This is, of course, my opinion.

Thank you again for the ARC!

Book: The Midnight Croissant (Pearly Gates)
Author: Bonnie Solomon

Thank you NetGalley and Bonsol Press press for giving me this Audiobook ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was my first time reading/listening to Bonnie Solomon and I’m now a fan for life. This was such a creative spin on the afterlife and spirit guides. I want to live in this world a bit longer.
The Midnight Croissant is the second book in a series featuring Pearly Gates (yes, that’s the spirit guide’s name – this and other tongue and cheek puns really drive this fun story). I did not read the first book but will now go back and read it. Still, jumping into book two unaware was not a problem. The author does a nice job of catching readers up and I was immediately immersed in a world.
This book takes Pearly to Paris where she takes her three charges, and others she’s not responsible for, on a whirl-wind tour of the city of love. There are clashing personalities (a woman who lost herself after a fire, a grandfather trying to reconnect with his closeted grandson, and a young woman looking for her own identity) and Pearly wonders if she’ll need to break a few spirit guide rules in order to really help her charges. Pearly is not known for being the most law-abiding, but her heart really is in the right place.
What I loved about this book was how hopeful it is. These characters are going through a lot. And it’s not that 10 days in Paris is going to “fix” everything, but if they can experience hope and joy and optimism, Pearly will have done her job in setting them off in the right direction. Aided by her past soul-mate (yes, awkward) and thwarted by her boss who just wants to ship Pearly off somewhere remote, Pearly uses her best tricks to inspire those around her and show them what love and community can really be.
Readers should be aware that there is some significant homophobic experiences a character deals with. Additionally, there is some mature content, nothing sexual on the page but a lot of inuendo.
The production of this was really solid as well. The author narrates it herself and while she does an admirable job, I would love to hear this book from a professional audiobook narrator, just to get more emotion. The different voices worked but it all felt like one emotion – not flat – just singular. There are few people who can be amazing writers and humorists and screenwriters and audiobook narrators so there is no shame in Solomon hiring someone for her next book. Beyond the narration, the pacing is good, good distinct but not overly long chapter breaks, and no extraneous noises or too-loud sound effects.
This was a lot of fun and a really interesting premise, with solid LGBTQ+ representation. I’m a big fan. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book!

This is the second Pearly Gates book but it can be read as a standalone novel. MC Pearly Gates is a spirit guide who’s as well known for her humor and pizazz, as she is for her tardiness and frequent protocol violations. Now, if she can’t turn things around for her three charges (and fast) she’s going to be relegated to the Null Region.

This read (for me) was chaotic and too long. It felt like a mash-up of every cliche group vacation movie, TV romantic movie with an FMC that just “so quirky”, and TV sitcom teen coming out episode. Think ‘My Life in Ruins’ but add queer characters, a rogue guardian angel à la Jessica Day (New Girl), and a Lisa Frank-amount of color and glitter - which I don’t think is all bad.

Cons: I did not enjoy “Dumb Pearl” and feel the emotional impact of the character would be better achieved by giving Pearly a quirky pet. Preferably one that doesn’t fart lightening.
The story is repetitive – in both the problems and the revelations. I feel like Pearly had no less 20 epiphanies by the end. It also seemed repetitive because many of the scenes felt like they were progressing in real time. Too many conversations, too many heart to hearts. Perhaps the trip should be 7 days instead of 10.

Pros: There are multiple romances in the story and, except for a few kisses, there is no spice. The strong themes of community, self-acceptance, and love (romantic, familial, platonic) made the entire story incredibly wholesome.
I enjoyed how spirituality and religion were casually handled. No judgement – just stating how characters process and see life through the lens of the beliefs they hold. I also liked the concept of outgrowing old versions of yourself – and that being ok.
I thought Mildred was an incredibly rich antagonist. She’s interesting – a “villain” I really empathized with. Also, Beckett was very easy to love. Throughout the entire story I just wanted to hug him.

Favorite quotes:
“Same pews. Same hymns. But every Sunday, as I got older, all I heard was what I wasn’t allowed to be. Who I wasn’t allowed to be with. You got comfort Grandpa. I got surveillance.”

“The croissant on that food tour? Life-changing. I saw God, and he was laminated in butter.”

“LOVE ISN’T A TRIANGLE—IT’S A WHOLE DAMN CONSTELLATION!”

What a fun, wonderful, light-infused, powerful, sweet yet heart-breaking read!

I have to give credit to the author!! This one had me laughing one moment, then literally crying my eyes out the next...
It was such a FUN read, with so much love, angst, interest, disinterest, flamboyancy, solitude, sparkle, uplifting scenarios, as well as those that just make you... STOP AND THINK!!!

All taking place with the glittering lights of Paris all around, as well as the smells and sounds of same (they seemed to ease through the pages to my eyes, ears and nose...)

This was really just such an uplifting, beautiful, spiritual, emotional, unbelievably impactful read!!

And, it touched on SO MANY different levels... and personalities... and so much more...

A young woman trying to be a spirit guide (from the afterlife) named Pearly Gates (what else???) who is still trying to forge her way to do the right thing... from beyond...

An elderly man traveling with his grandson after the loss of his wife. An older woman who closed herself off from the world after losing everything in a home fire. And a young woman who finds it difficult to identify with anyone or anything in the world around her...
And yet, together, they all seem to grow... and learn... and live... and survive... and THRIVE!!

I'm not sure how else to say it other than that it was just a really SPECIAL read.
So if you are looking for something different, enlightening, and sweet... with a side of nutty, outrageous and mind-defying... look no further! You have found it!!!

All the stars for me for bringing out ALL THE EMOTIONS... and then some!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨✨✨✨✨🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟💫💫💫💫💫

#TheMidnightCroissant by @BonnieSolomon and narrated nicely by the author!! (I didn't realize that until this moment!!)
Of Note: This apparently is part of a series, but can certainly be read alone (as I did!)

THIS ONE HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED YET, BUT LOOK FOR IT SOON. RELEASE DATE IS 3/24/26!!

Thanks so much to #NetGalley and @BonsolPress for an ALC of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review!!

I really enjoyed "The Midnight Croissant" by Bonnie Solomon. It is fiction with a bit of paranormal or supernatural touch. The main character is Pearly Gates (Yes, that's her name) who is a spirit guide with three human charges to help.

She makes a deal with her irascible boss that she will raise the auras of her three charges by a whole level in just 10 days. To do that she gets them all on the same trip and tour to Paris and she is going to be incarnate and a member of the tour as well. If she can do it, she will earn the right to stay a guide and have little or no future supervision. If she can't do it, she will be demoted, possibly even sent to the Null division.

Pearly is a great character, very flamboyant and vivacious, and one who doesn't like the rules. Her human charges are an older widower who is taking his closeted teenage grandson, on a graduation trip, an older single woman who has shut down joy and color in her life, and a woman searching for her identity and belonging and finding she may be ACE (asexual).

So there are basically four stories, plus Pearly's own story that take place, and they are all woven together extremely well.

The trip though Paris was very well described and tempting, especially the food! It made me want to visit Paris!

The narrator of this audiobook was the author, Bonnie Solomon, and although she did a good job, this audiobook would really benefit from having several narrators.

I just found out this is the second book in the Pearly Gates series. I'm going to go listen to the first one next!

If this book sounds interesting to you, check out The Midnight Croissant or the first one, Pearly Gates, by Bonnie Solomon!

Thank you to Netgalley, Bonsol Press, and Bonnie Solomon for providing this audiobook in exchange for my honest review. I truly appreciate it!

I am already a Pearly Gates fan from the first novel, so I jumped right into this ARC with some high expectations. I am happy to say that they were met and frequently exceeded. While maintaining a structure that is familiar from the first book, intercutting between the comedic bureaucracy of the afterlife and the lives of Pearly's earthly wards, "The Midnight Croissant" expands upon almost every previously established element, delivering richer characters, more complex situations, and an even trippier idea of what is possible in Solomon's universe, as perfectly embodied by the newly introduced antagonist, Mildreth Snaggs, an officious and malignant middle-manager / sentient fungus.

In expanding upon the first book, "The Midnight Croissant" does move away from the cozy coffeeshop setting that was a big part of the original's charm. A sumptuously depicted Paris makes up for this, with scenes set against the grandeur of Versailles and the comfy nooks of the Shakespeare & Company bookstore. The romance of Paris lends a new vibrance to the story and provides the perfect backdrop for learning more about Pearly's past incarnations, as well as further exploring her many-lives-long relationship with her soul mate, Thunder.

As a final note, I want to add that I am not necessarily in the target demographic for this book, being an older, straight, white, cisgender male. This shouldn't matter and I'm glad to say that it doesn't. While Pearly Gates presents as a drag queen, and other characters are from the LGBTQIA+ community, I found myself relating to all of them and empathizing with their struggles on a human level. This is both a fun read and a rewarding one, as Solomon sends the world a much needed message about the value of human connection, the need for self-acceptance, and the relentless grace of second chances.

Some books entertain you.

Some books comfort you.

And then there are books like The Midnight Croissant. The kind that gently takes your face in its hands and says, “You’re allowed to be exactly who you are.”

The Midnight Croissant is a story about acceptance, love, and finding your own way, and it does so with warmth, humor, and emotional honesty that completely caught me off guard.

Pearly is an absolute vibe. Witty, optimistic,  and powerful, she pushes so hard to be herself, and I respected that deeply. Her take on life is wholesome without ever feeling naïve and she encourages everyone around her to grow while still giving them the space to just be.

Every story mattered. Every moment counted. I got emotional.... like, really emotional. I felt everything the characters felt: happiness, anger, sadness, love, desire. One standout moment for me was Lillian and Pearly’s conversation in Chapter 22, it was eye opening and absolutely beautiful. Moments like these make me take a look at my own life.

Bonnie Solomon’s descriptions are stunning, painting scenes so vividly that I could practically taste the croissants and feel the glow of the city. (Also… Emily in Paris mention?? 👀 I see you, girl.)

Ultimately, The Midnight Croissant made me feel warm and fuzzy inside. It’s naturally funny, emotionally rich, and deeply comforting. The author has a rare gift for making readers feel understood and that’s something truly special.

I have to add as well that the LGBTQ+ acceptance in this story was subtle, gentle, and perfectly written. As a bisexual woman who took over 20 years to come out ... thank you. This book made me feel seen without ever feeling performative.

P.S. If this were an animated show, I would watch the hell out of it. Amazon Prime or Netflix — Come get ya girl!!

I gratefully received an ARC copy of this book along with its predecessor, "Pearly Gates". The original was a terrific romp with great humor, lovable characters, and thoughtful narrative arcs for the main characters. The sequel, "Midnight Croissant", expands upon and adds to what I loved from the first. An enjoyable romp through Paris with more good, queer fun yet still containing sections that drew me to tears.

"Pearly Gates" was the MC's redemption arc. "Midnight Croissant" is her proving ground. Whereas Pearly learned to love and depend on herself in the former text, the latter is where she relearns how to love others. But Pearly isn't the only one; Solomon does the City of Love justice in demonstrating the many exemplary ways that romance and sexuality shine in our universe. And I do mean universe- not just Earth or the afterlife. Even fungoids have emotions, which are literally explored in this book. Innovative stuff.

I related well with the first book's characters. I am pleasantly surprised to relate even more with the characters in this book. To clarify, I am an ace Filipino living in Tennessee. Not only are two important characters from Tennessee, one of Pearly's charges is an aroace Filipina exploring her sexuality throughout the novel. Her and other LGBT characters really get to shine here, even experiencing the more vibrant parts of Paris' queer night life.

Bonnie Solomon's writing is entertaining and fun while having its profound moments. She takes the question "what lies at the center our universe?" and provides her own fabulous theory- something loving and kind.

I read an advanced copy of The Midnight Croissant and am a better person for it. This book is a joyful romp through the afterlife, complete with spiritual guides, soul rebirths and incarnations. Pearly Gates, spiritual guide extraordinaire is tasked with lifting the vibrational auras of three charges: an older woman sequestered behind a life of barriers, a grandfather frightened of acknowledging his grandson’s sexuality, and a young woman whose workaholic existence suppresses her true self. Pearly decides on the best course of action—a fabulous tour of Paris. She bets her supervisor, Mildrith Snaggs that, as a result of the exploration of the City of Lights, her charges will raise their auras one level and thereby become happier and more fulfilled. But if Pearly loses the bet she will be demoted to the job of celestial waste management, her worst nightmare.

Pearly dons her sequined outfits and larger than life hairstyles and joins her charges on a fabulous tour of Paris including the chandeliers of Versailles, the peacefulness of Mont. St. Maichel, and of course, a search for the best croissant. Her soulmate, Thunder, surprises her by manifesting himself as their tour guide and Mildrith, filled with stunted jealousy and resentment, attempts to thwart her quest.

I loved this book. It filled me with happiness, laughter and a poignant message of love and acceptance. As earth-bound humans living in today’s world, we all could use a bit of Pearly's spiritual-guide wisdom: “Luck’s redundant when you’ve got style.”

Though I have not yet picked up Pearly Gates, which appears to be the first of the series, I do find this books was able to stand alone and tell the story of a spiritual guide (a literal spirit) who is helping her charges navigate their mortal lives.

Pearly Gates is a bit of a wild card and her methods of spiritual guidance are unconventional and ride the line of legal or taboo. It is no wonder her boss is out to get her and to bring Pearly's sparkle under control. Pearly decides to make a deal with her boss; she says she can turn the lives of her 3 charges around on a 10 day trip to Paris or she will submit to being demoted and possibly exiled.

I do want to go back and read the other book as I want to know more about Pearly herself and why she is the way she is. I do see her flamboyance as being lovely and sparkly but I also understand the manager a bit as well, when someone seems to b slacking off and not following common practices and also seems to be a bit more show rather than producing results. I love her personality but I can see that since she seemed to have skated by a lot of the traditional path to get a position as a spiritual guide, she seems to take it for granted. I enjoyed seeing her buckle down and join the people she was supposed to be guiding as they toured France for all of their differing reasons. It seems being with them helped her put in perspective the importance of her job and also some aspects of her own existence as well. I can't wait to see what else happens for Pearly and others.

I’m giving this a 4 stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Bonnie Solomon whisked me away to the cobblestone streets of Paris in this charming Pearly Gates Novel. The story follows an American baker who inherits a mysterious patisserie and discovers that some recipes require more than just flour and sugar—they need a little bit of faith and a whole lot of heart.

The Good:
The sensory writing is incredible. Solomon describes the pastries and the Parisian atmosphere so vividly I could almost smell the butter and espresso through the pages! ☕🥖 The found family element with the quirky staff at the bakery was heartwarming, and the slow-burn romance with a cynical local architect was the perfect "opposites attract" dynamic. I also loved the magical realism touch—the way certain croissants seemed to give the customers exactly what their souls needed was pure 4-star magic.

The Not-So-Good:
The middle section felt a bit long as the protagonist struggled with the "should I stay or should I go" dilemma. A few of the misunderstandings between the leads felt like they could have been solved with one honest conversation. However, the sheer charm of the setting made it easy to keep reading!

This is the second Pearly Gates book, but it can definitely be read as a standalone. I went in unsure what to expect since I hadn’t read the first, but the premise immediately intrigued me.

Pearly is a chaotic, glitter loving spirit guide who takes her three charges on a transformational trip to Paris while trying to avoid banishment to the Null Region. At its heart, the story focuses on community, self-acceptance, love, and outgrowing old versions of yourself.

I really enjoyed the wholesome tone and the vivid descriptions of Paris. The conversations about life, faith, and personal growth felt sincere and comforting. The low-spice romances and the layered antagonist were definite highlights.
That said, the pacing felt uneven. The beginning and the final stretch dragged for me, and some scenes and repeated realisations could have been trimmed. I also wasn’t a fan of the “Dumb Pearly” element. It felt over the top and unnecessary, and I think a talking pet could have achieved the same emotional impact in a simpler way. I also didn’t feel much chemistry in the central romance.

Overall, this reads less like a cosy romance and more like a reflective story about growth and connection. It also very much felt like a spin off of Human Resources by Nick Kroll, which is not a bad thing but I feel like it coloured my experience. If you enjoy slower, heartfelt books with a bit of chaos and sparkle, this could be for you.

I was given an advanced copy of this book and the author has such a wonderful hold on character growth and development. It's so easy to love the characters in the pages of this book. Each persona and background is so unique but the challenges they face are so relatable: the desire to be accepted and loved, societal expectations, and self-realization and actualization. All set in the most fabulous city in the world! It was the exact feel good read I wanted over the holidays.

Not to mention the settings! They themselves are a character. I've been to Paris and had the most fabulous time and this book brought me right back to the streets, with all their wonder, promise, and dreams. Solomon paints the city just as your heart wants to romanticize about it, food, atmosphere and sites included! I was also not expecting the historical insight on the different locations, it was so fun to be thrilled by events of the novel and feel like I was learning new tidbits as I walked the metaphorical streets of Paris. Pearly makes you want to root for her, and even the 'bad guys' are complex and endearing in the end. Plus Pearly's swoon worthy romance with her ex-soulmate was butter on the already delicious story croissant. It was nice that the main character also had such a worthy love interest.

I can't wait for Pearly's next adventure!
