Henry's puppy, Mudge, loves to eat. He really wants to share Henry's snack. Henry keeps saying, "No, Mudge!" But it's hard to resist a puppy as cute as Mudge!
An author of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry for children and young adults as well as an author and author/illustrator of picture books for children, Cynthia Rylant is recognized as a gifted writer who has contributed memorably to several genres of juvenile literature. A prolific author who often bases her works on her own background, especially on her childhood in the West Virginia mountains, she is the creator of contemporary novels and historical fiction for young adults, middle-grade fiction and fantasy, lyrical prose poems, beginning readers, collections of short stories, volumes of poetry and verse, books of prayers and blessings, two autobiographies, and a biography of three well-known children's writers; several volumes of the author's fiction and picture books are published in series, including the popular "Henry and Mudge" easy readers about a small boy and his very large dog.
Rylant is perhaps most well known as a novelist. Characteristically, she portrays introspective, compassionate young people who live in rural settings or in small towns and who tend to be set apart from their peers.
The beloved children's book character, Mudge, is the focus of this beginning reader. Mudge's boy, Henry, is eating a snack, and Mudge is trying to convince Henry to share. Mudge pulls out all of his tricks, only to learn that the solution was far simpler. The simple text and cartoon-style illustrations work well together to get the story across. Recommended purchase. Ages 4-7.
2.25 stars. In this book, Henry's puppy Mudge, is hungry for a snack. Mudge makes various attempts to steal Henry's snack. At first, Henry scolds Mudge, but he relents and gives Mudge a snack. The illustrations in this book are fantastic.
Title: Puppy Mudge Has a Snack Author: Cynthia Rylant Illustrator: Isidre Mones Genre: Early Reader Theme(s): Owner/Pet relationship, friendship Opening line/sentence: This is Mudge. Brief Book Summary: Mudge is Henry's dog and he wants a snack. Mudge tries several different things to get Henry to give him a snack. In the end Mudge simply looks cute for Henry and he gives Mudge a snack. Professional Recommendation/Review #1: Marilyn Courtot (Children's Literature) Mudge is one big puppy and he also has a big appetite. When Henry is munching a snack, Mudge tags along because he wants some too. He tries getting on Henry's lap, licking his head and any other trick he can think of. Henry keeps saying No! His final tricks win Henry over and off they head to the kitchen where Henry gets a cracker for Mudge. Mudge loves crackers and now both of them are happy enjoying a snack. One line per page with colorful drawings make this a perfect introduction to reading. The amusing pictures of puppy Mudge slobbering and drooling and doing anything he can to get his snack will remind kids of some of their behaviors. A Pre-level 1 book in the "Ready-to-Read" series aimed at kids who need word repetition, familiar words and phrases and simple sentences. 2003, Simon & Schuster, $14.95. Ages 3 to 5. (PUBLISHER: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers (New York:), PUBLISHED: c2003.)
Professional Recommendation/Review #2: Rylant, Cynthia Puppy Mudge Has a Snack 32 pp. Simon (Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing) 2004. ISBN 0-689-83982-0 (5) K-3 Different Illustrated by Sucie Stevenson. Ready-to-Read series. These books lack the liveliness and imagination of the original Henry and Mudge easy readers. Geared to a younger audience, the books feature very simple, repetitive texts ("This is Mudge. He is Henry's puppy. Mudge wants Henry's snack"). Clear, humorous illustrations provide some clues for new readers.
Response to Two Professional Reviews: The second review says that this book lacks the liveliness of other Henry & Mudge books however I'm not sure how lively you can make a book with only one 4-6 word sentence per page. I think this is a great early reader that uses simplicity & repetition to invite young learners into the world of reading. Evaluation of Literary Elements: One great item in this story is repeating phrases. The book repeats several phrases throughout which is helpful for young readers. The illustrations are warm, bright colors that are really inviting to the readers. Lastly, there is only one line per page consisting of simple text which again is great for early readers. Consideration of Instructional Application: This book would be perfect for young students to create their own pet story. They could write a short, simple story about their pet (or a pet they wish they had) and what adventure they would have. The students could then illustrate their own story in a picture box above their writing.
We have really enjoyed the Henry and Mudge series of books and the Puppy Mudge books are perfect for the youngest readers. Our girls had a lot of fun reading this one aloud to me.

A very short, easy Henry and Mudge book. Henry has a snack, but Mudge wants it. He tries many different strategies before finally getting crackers. I love that there are crackers in this book.
