Irresistible small-town coastal charm where the clam chowder is as heavenly as the secrets are deadly…
Writer Saffi Graywood is looking for a quiet place to finish her latest book when she sets her sights on Last Chance Cove. After a winding drive along the rugged Oregon coastline, Saffi arrives at her home for the summer – an RV park overlooking wind-swept beaches with salt-soaked air and fog that rolls in without warning.
Three years after her husband’s death, Saffi is still getting used to life on her own. But nobody is left alone for long in this small coastal community, where gossip is shared with your morning coffee and secrets whisper in the brisk sea wind.
When Saffi discovers the body of the park’s manager hidden amongst driftwood, her plan to hole up in her RV is shattered in an instant. She is drawn into solving a real-life mystery that’s just as strange and twisty as the bestsellers she pens.
In a town that seems as sweet as a whipped-cream mocha, who has a motive for murder? And will Saffi’s sleuthing draw the kind of attention that could turn this exciting new chapter into her last?
Murder at Last Chance Cove is the first in a captivating new series where wild beauty meets small-town intrigue. Perfect for fans of Lauren Elliott, Merryn Allingham and Debbie Macomber and readers who love their mysteries served with breathtaking scenery, quirky characters and a dash of romance.
Saffi Graywood is a writer who travels the countryside looking for interesting topics to write up and publish in Aunt Saffi's Bedside Reader. She arrives at Last Chance Cove to find her three month booking at the RV park is not what she wished and then finds the body of the Park Manager. Of course she has to try and help discover what has happened.
This is a twisty mystery with a heap of red herrings, a cute dog and a possible romance for Saffi in future books. All good. Four stars.
My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Three years after her husband's unexpected death, Saffi Graywood still thanked him for his instruction on their RV. Now it was her home and she travelled from town to town, enjoying the peace and serenity, while writing and keeping her editor, Poppy, happy. Arriving at Last Chance Cove after the hair raising journey through Oregon's winding coastline, she was grateful when she pulled up at the RV park where she'd booked for three months. Overlooking the ocean; the breath of salty sea breeze had her sighing with delight.
But discovering first a bedraggled and almost drowned little dog, then later the body of the RV park's manager, Saffi was shocked, but immediately drawn into finding out who had killed her. Because even with the local police chief saying it was accidental, Saffi knew from the brief glimpse she'd had, that it was murder. Would her questions - of people she didn't even know yet - cause her to be the next one on the killer's list?
I really enjoyed Murder at Last Chance Cove by new to me author Kim Griswell. First in a new cosy series (Pacific North West Mysteries) it was fun and entertaining, with some laugh out loud moments at Saffi and her antics. She was - in her own words - a klutz, and proved that often! She was also a clever sleuth, and of course, annoyed the local policeman running the "ongoing investigation". There were many suspects, twists and turns aplenty, and a frustrated Saffi who couldn't concentrate on her writing... Highly recommended. I love the cover too, with Archie proudly showing off his red bandanna.
With thanks to NetGalley & Storm Publishing for my digital ARC to read and review.
This is a new author and new series for me. I was really pleasantly surprised by this new cozy mystery series. I found it to be a little longer, definitely character driven, and a little more engaging than an average cozy mystery. Suffi is an unusual MC, a little older, a widow, on the move as she lives in an RV and very engaged in the world around her as she write a series of books called Aunt Saffi's Bedside Reader a series of weird but true stories and strange facts. This keeps her looking for strange and interesting stories and gives her a head full of strange and useful information that sometimes comes in handy! As we begin, Saffi pulls into Last Chance Cove RV park for a three month stay to explore the Pacific Northwest and find novel tales to share. Unfortunately, she finds that the man she checks in with has just accepted a bribe for her three month spot, the last for the season. Determined she will clear things up with the female Park Manager she had talked to on the phone she takes a three night spot and gets set up. When she hears a scream in the middle of the first night, she gets up to offer help, first discovering a lost half drown pup and then later finding the body of the missing Park Manager. What follows is a wild, complicated mystery in a quirky small town with a lot of different characters and suspects. Suffi is in for a lot of strange happenings, crazy motives, and odd people. She also starts to make some friends in this wildly beautiful seaside small town. I really enjoyed this book and eagerly look forward to the next in the series! Book review of Murder at Last Chance Cove by Kim Griswell. Thank you to Storm Publishing and NetGalley for my gifted ARC.
This book was exactly what I needed: a cozy mystery with bite. Griswell nails the atmosphere—foggy mornings, sea-salted air, and a town so quaint it practically has gossip on tap. The protagonist, Saffi Graywood, arrives in Last Chance Cove to escape, to heal, to write. What she doesn’t expect is to stumble on a body among driftwood within days of parking her RV. So much for peace and quiet.
Saffi is smart, layered, and refreshingly observant—more introverted writer than amateur sleuth, but that makes her instincts feel earned rather than forced. She’s still grieving her husband, still learning how to be alone. That ache lingers on the page without bogging the story down. Instead, it gives her drive. As she digs deeper into the mystery, you can feel her waking up again, bit by bit. And the town? It’s filled with just the right amount of charm and suspicion—grizzled fishermen, nosy café owners, oddball RV regulars. Everyone seems harmless until suddenly they’re not.
The pacing is tight. Clues come in steady waves, each chapter ending with enough of a tease to keep me flipping pages. And Griswell’s prose strikes a sweet spot—crisp but rich with detail. One line that stayed with me: “The fog rolled in thick as regret, swallowing everything but the sound of the waves and the weight of what I’d just found.” That’s the moment the cozy wraps fall away and the real stakes land.
By the end, I wasn’t just invested in the mystery—I wanted to stay in Last Chance Cove. Griswell has created a setting and a sleuth I’ll happily return to. This is a strong start to what promises to be an addictive series. I’m all in
The first book in a series has a rather long "To Do" list - establish the who, what, when, where and why of the main character, give us an engaging setting chock-full of interesting folks, set up a situation where a murder or mystery happens and the main character either feels called to help or is engaged to assist, keep our interest as the mystery slowly develops, toss in a few red herrings, and then bring it all together at the end by solving the first case and then setting up the main character for a hopefully long series of more cozy mysteries. Whew.
The author gives us an engaging main character in Saffi Graywood, "Writer. Roamer, And all-around klutz" and recent widow mourning her beloved Levi, who now travels in an RV. She arrives in Last Chance Cove, a picturesque small town with a great coffee shop and quirky barista, a hunky potential love interest Troy who runs a charter fishing service out of the harbor, and a murder right off the bat. After being woken in the night by a raven's cry (Saffi's spirit animal and guide) Saffi finds a dead body, Linda the manager of the RV park.
The author, who like Saffi is a rambling RV writer, has a good feel for people and gives us some interesting well-developed characters, but perhaps a few too many? (I'm still not sure exactly who Walter and Martin are ...) And with so much characters and situations fighting for coverage, about 2/3rds of the way through, I wasn't sure how it would all come together. But we do get an answer, and we also get a good sense of a small community and characters with a lot of potential for a series that I look foward to reading. 3.5 stars.
I received an ARC from the Publisher, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.
I received a free copy from the publisher through Netgalley and voluntarily reviewed it.
Murder at last Chance Cove caught my eye on Netgalley with the pretty cover, then the book description won me over. I loved the idea of the main character traveling in an RV and finding a new place to belong in Last Chance Cove. I had a great time reading this book. I liked reading about Saffi and her RV and her arriving in Last Chance Cove and slowly finding a place she wanted to stay longer and I liked reading about this small town on the coast.
The mystery was one that kept me guessing. Quite early on the main suspects are established and none of them really gets ruled out till later, but at the same time new information and secrets come to light throughout the story. This made it so it kept me guessing who of the suspects had done it, but it also felt like there was progress in the mystery despite no suspects getting ruled out yet. I kept switching who I thought the murderer was and then when I eventually settled on one I was proven wrong. I liked how all of these suspects had some secret or information that got revealed during the investigation. The reveal was well done and made sense too and managed to take me by surprise.
I liked reading about Saffi, she's a nonfiction writer and it was fun to read about her research and the books she has written. I also liked how this gave her a reason to poke her nose into things and how she was curious and wanted to know things. She could be quite determined to find out the truth and could come across as a bit pushy at times, but I also liked how she wanted to make sure Linda's murderer was found. The police did seem to do some work as well and I liked Saffi's dynamic with the police. There is a possible romance as well which will be fun to see play out more in future books. And I liked seeing Saffi make friends in last Chance Cove. The ending wraps things up nicely and made me excited for the next book, which I luckily already got for review as well.
To summarize: I had a great time reading this cozy mystery, I liked how the main character owned an RV and reading about the RV park as well as Last Chance Cove. The mystery kept me guessing, the main suspects get all introduced early on and no one gets ruled out till later. Secrets and information come to light along the way and it made the mystery feel like it still had plenty of progress. I liked the reveal and the way it made sense even tough I guessed the murderer wrong. I liked reading about Saffi, her nonfiction books and the RV she lives in. I liked seeing her slowly grow fond of this small seaside town and make friends and connections. I had a great time reading this one and look forward to the next book.
Murder at Last Chance Cove by Kim Griswell is a charming start to a new cozy series! The series follows Saffi after she decides to park her RV in a coastal town in the Pacific Northwest three years after the death of her beloved husband. Saffi is looking for inspiration as she is a researcher, investigating a variety of subjects for her best selling books. In the middle of her first night at the RV park, Saffi hears a scream and finds a lost dog. The next morning, she finds the dog's owner's dead body. Saffi cannot let the murder go unsolved and puts her researching skills towards solving the case making both friends and enemies along the way.
I'm a huge cozy mystery fan so I knew I would like this book, I didn't know that I would like it as much as I did though. I thought the entire book was so unexpected that it felt really refreshing. I found the characters were lovable while still being intelligent. I thought that the logic made a lot of sense. I did ding it by taking off half a star for a choice the character makes when she reveals to the entire RV park that a victim is still alive and will talk soon but other than that the sleuth does not suffer from TSTL syndrome. I was also so pleased to read about someone who was a little older, I tend to gravitate to books about people around my age but this was such a nice perspective, I quite liked it.
Overall I do recommend this book to anyone who enjoys cozy books or would like to give one a try. I think the whole story will pull you in if you give it a chance.
Thank you to NetGalley, Storm Publishing, and Kim Griswell for giving me the opportunity to read the book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. By the way, I liked the book so much I even bought the audiobook after finishing it because I know I'll be listening to that bad boy when I knit.
"Murder at Last Chance Cove (Pacific Northwest Cozy Mystery #1)" by Kim Griswell is a good start to a new cozy mystery series. This book sets up a series that could either stay put in Last Chance Cove or travel. The main character is a nomadic bedside reader author named Saffi Graywood. She took to the RV life after the sudden passing of her husband since she writes factual articles that get accumulated in bedside reader style books. She also has a regular blog about stories she picks up in her travels. She may even have a stalker via the blog.
While at her summer camp ground spot, Last Chance Cove, some serious drama goes on. First, she may have had her monthly camp spot stolen out from under her by a misogynistic campground host and bribing Texans. Then, the campground manager's dog has to be rescued and the manager has gone missing. Saffie can't help but investigate when things just aren't adding up.
Everything is and isn't tied together. All the little things are like a my scrap bin of yarn. You don't know what's connected to what or what one clue will lead you to.
If you’re ready for a cozy mystery complete with quirky characters, humor and engaging writing, Murder at Last Chance Cove by Kim Griswell is a book for you. I especially loved Ms. Griswell’s word play and descriptions of the southern Oregon coastal town. It’s an engaging ‘who dun it’ from beginning to end. I’m looking forward to meeting up with the protagonist Saffi Graywood as she solves more mysteries down the road.
Murder at Last Chance Cove is exactly what you’d hope for in the first book of a cozy mystery series: a charming coastal town, quirky neighbors with just the right amount of gossip, a sudden murder, and a reluctant amateur sleuth who can’t help but get involved.
Our sleuth, Saffi Graywood, is not your typical twenty-something heroine—she’s a widowed travel writer still grieving her husband, Levi. She’s grounded, funny, and delightfully klutzy, which makes her both relatable and refreshing. Traveling the Pacific Northwest in her RV, she arrives at Last Chance Cove intending to write, heal, and maybe put down roots for a while. Instead, she stumbles across a half-drowned pup and, shortly after, the body of the RV park’s manager. When the police shrug it off as an accident, Saffi’s instincts (and a few well-timed raven calls) tell her otherwise.
The mystery itself is nicely layered. Griswell sprinkles in plenty of suspects and red herrings, and while I had my suspicions, the final reveal landed later than expected—which is exactly how I like my cozies. The pacing stays steady, with moments of genuine tension balanced by humor, heart, and community.
What elevates this story are the characters and setting. The cove feels vividly drawn—windswept, moody, and atmospheric—while the townsfolk come across as lived-in rather than caricatures. The friendships, budding romances, and small-town dynamics feel authentic, and the mystical thread of Saffi’s connection with ravens adds a unique touch without overpowering the cozy tone.
As a series opener, Murder at Last Chance Cove checks all the boxes. It’s not reinventing the cozy mystery wheel, but it delivers warmth, atmosphere, and intrigue in equal measure. Saffi Graywood is a heroine I’m eager to follow, and I’m looking forward to seeing how she (and the community of Last Chance Cove) continue to grow in future installments.
Author Saffi Graywood and her husband, Levi, sold up everything, bought an RV, and headed off to enjoy their retirement together. When Levi died suddenly, Saffi found herself alone, no home to return to, and a hole in her heart she didn't think she would ever fill. Three years later Saffi is in Last Chance Cove on the Oregon coastline where she is looking forward to spending three months in the same RV park while she catches up on her latest edition of Aunt Saffi’s Bedside Reader, while finding other interesting things to write about. What she didn’t expect was finding a dead body on the beach and becoming a suspect in a murder investigation! Meaning, along with new friends, Delilah, and the very gorgeous Troy, she has to look into things for herself. Nothing is quite as it seems, and as the danger increases, she isn't sure if they can actually solve the mystery before becoming victims themselves.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Storm Publishing, but the opinions expressed are my own. The first book in Kim Griswell's new series was a pleasure to read. I loved Saffi, Delilah, and Troy, along with the other inhabitants of the RV park, all of whom added to the storyline in a variety of ways. The mystery twisted and turned its way to a conclusion, but there were still things left to discover and explain, which guarantees I will be on the lookout for book two. I thoroughly enjoyed this and happily recommend it to any cosy lover.
Murder at Last Chance Cove is the first book in a series by Kim Griswell featuring Saffi Graywood and she is off to a great start with this series and I cannot wait for the next book in the series. Mature readers will find a home to come to.
Saffi is a writer who has come to the Pacific Northwest to find stories for her podcast Travels with Aunt Soffi and to work on a new book for her Aunt Saffi’s Bedside Reader series. Little did she know on this journey that she would find the community she didn’t know she was missing, and perhaps a new romance to heal from the loss of her husband Levi three years ago.
Saffi barely has time to set up her RV before she is greeted by a mystery of a lost dog in the middle of the night, and then she discovers the missing RV park manager’s body in the estuary the next day. People are quick to declare it an accident because there was a weather warning for sneaker waves and said Linda was careless. Saffi doesn’t believe it is an accident based on the wound on the back of Linda’s head and proceeds to poke around, to the dismay of the detective working on the case There are several suspects because Linda was not a nice person and there is little doubt she will not be missed.
One of the things I liked about this book was the more mature cast of characters. So often us mature readers have to deal with characters who are in their early 20s, which is fine, but sometimes you just want your own age group. When Saffi met Troy, an attractive local man who does fishing charters, she assumed he would only be interested in younger women. Her thought of “She had experience, and she knew how to use it” made me laugh. . Ms. Griswell’s description of the characters and the town of Last Chance Cove is done really well so that you feel you know the people and the town. I want Delilah’s coffee in my life! There are so many red herrings in this story that when you think you have figured out the killer, there is a twist that makes you rethink your theory. I loved that Saffi’s potential love interest didn’t follow the standard trope of being the detective in the town, though I do love a good nosy woman/lawman story.
Thank you NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A great start to a new series. Saffi is a writer who decided to travel all over the country in her RV, following her husband's sudden death 3 years ago. She spends a few months in each place, digging up interesting facts about that place that she then includes in her books. She arrives in Last Chance Cove and by the following morning she's involved in a murder mystery. As a writer she's curious and starts digging. It goes from a murder mystery to blackmail, kidnapping, arson and attempted murder with plenty of twists and turns along the way. Also some fun, quirky characters in the town. A fun read and I'll definitely read the next one. Thanks to Netgalley, Storm Publishing, and Kim Griswell for the free ARC. All opinions are my own.
What a pleasure it was to read this exciting new cozy mystery. Saffi is struggling to finish her book, so she takes to the road in a massive RV, hoping that a tranquil spot will help her creativity flow. What Saffi doesn't expect is to get mixed up in a murder investigation, one that places a big target on her back. I had a good time meeting this new main character and I'm hoping there will be plenty more future books. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.
An easy enough read as they try to work out who the murderer is, with nice enough characters but I found myself more skim reading as it wasn’t gripping enough for my liking.
We have so many things to write about (and read) in 2025. I simply will not in good faith continue this book with a disrespectful (and irrelevant to the plot) joke.
Saffi Graywood, a traveling writer who gathers real-life stories for her books, stops in Last Chance Cove to finish her latest manuscript. Instead of writing, she investigates the murder of the RV park managers. The twists and turns keep you guessing as Saffi sorts through suspects to find the killer. I’m curious whether Last Chance Cove will become her home base as she continues exploring the Pacific Northwest, and I’m already eager for the next book in the series.
Love this! I hate to be cliche but this is modern "Murder She Wrote". Our protagonist is an older, (Let's say early mid-life) widowed author who is living in a small coastal community and murder is at her doorstep. Cliche. But so much better than that. Saffi is a Non-fiction author. She had started the RV life with her professor husband when he suddenly passed away. She continues traveling in her RV and writing her successful Aunt Saffi bed side stories. Saffi rolls into another campground with expectations of hunkering down for the next 3 months to plot and write her next book. She's met with an irritable greedy campground assistant manager who doesn't care she had scheduled a spot for 3 months when someone else is willing to pay extra for it. Before things can be hashed out, the Manager who promised her the longtime spot is found dead by Saffi. Her curiosity gets the best of her and she can't help but jump into sleuthing mode with her new neighbors in this camper community. Wonderfully written characters in a beautiful setting.
This is a cozy but written in a very real manner. The new neighbors are welcoming but also aren't sure of the new member to the campsite who can't keep her nose out of everyone's business. And is treated in a way that is more real than most cozy's are. Loved that fact the as she's looking at everyone suspiciously, they are reminding her that she's the new camper and everything was fine till she showed up.
There is a bit of a mystic feel to the story but not in a magical or paranormal way. There is acknowledgment of spirit animals in this story, but again set in reality. Think like "when a cardinal visit's it's a sign from loved one who has passed." When a raven pops up, Saffi pays attention. So it's not really a woo woo situation. But it is prominent in the story and adds a bit of a mystical feel to it.
Well written and held my interest through the whole story. Love the backgrounds of all the characters. Very much looking forward to this being a series.
Saffi Graywood is a widowed writer and travels in her RV looking for tidbits and inspirations for her books. She has come to Last Chance Cove for three months to finish her latest book, which she is behind schedule. She also finds the office guy has just rented her 3-month space out from under her and she has only three days. She is going to have to take that up with the park manager, Linda. Unfortunately, that night she finds the park manager 's body washed ashore. At first blush, its thought an accident but Saffi is not convinced. She now has a book to finish, decide what she is going to do about a place to stay and try figure out who killed Linda and not becoming a suspect or the next victim.
I enjoyed the story. I liked it being located in the Pacific Northwest and having an older sleuth. This was the first in the series and so there were a lot of characters to get to know...which also gave you a lot of suspects. My only critique was the at times the story slowed (for me) due to a lot of descriptive information which I didn't think was always necessary to the story. I also didn't blame the detective in the story for getting annoyed with Saffi due to her penchant at times for calling him about another new suspect with little to back it up.
I truly wasn't sure who did it, so the mystery was very good. I liked the community of folks and look forward to seeing them again in the next book.
Thanks, NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the chance to read this ARC.
Murder at Last Chance Cove is the debut cozy mystery for Kim Griswell's Pacific Northwest Cozy Mysteries series. This is an enjoyable cozy mystery with likable characters and a mystery that kept me guessing and although I suspected the culprit I wasn't sure. Saffi Graywood is a writer of short stories about odd and interesting history or every day things. She is a widow (and wants to be called Mrs Graywood for whatever reason) and is traveling around in a RV. She arrives at Last Chance Cove RV Park to find out she only has a spot for 3 days instead of 3 months like she planned. The Park Manager isn't very well liked and ends up dead. Saffi follows ravens who help her find clues which is a bit different. She tends to show up whenever there is a problem so she is on the suspect list. Being new she doesn't know anyone else in the RV. Park so she suspects them all of murder. That gets a little repetitive but there are other things going on and as Saffi gets to know the locals the story progresses. Some characters I liked and some not so much. I imagine the next book will showcase the characters in a better light now that the initial introductions have been.made and hopefully friendships will be stronger. Overall this was an enjoyable cozy mystery with a lot of potential. I received an advanced copy for free from NetGalley and Storm Publishing and I voluntarily leave this review. #MurderAtLastChanceCove #PacificNorthwestCozyMystery #StormPublishing #KimGriswell
Murder at Last Chance Cove is the first in a new series and my first book by the author. The story revolves around a murder that Saffi, the fmc stumbles upon in a new RV park along the Pacific Coast where she hopes to stay for the next three months and finish her book. The mystery is definitely good with enough red herrings to keep the readers guessing, but the writing fell short of my expectations. I am a huge fan of the cozy mysteries genre and I had high expectations for this book, so it pains me to not give a glowing five-star review. However, I found my attention wandering several times in sections where the narration seemed wordy, descriptive, and a little repetitive. Some sections read like a travelogue rather than a cozy mystery. Perhaps the author wanted to establish the setting as this is the first book in a new series, but I felt it made the book less engaging overall. The pace is mostly slow and the characters aren't that endearing or memorable either, but I kept reading for the whodunnit part and did enjoy the last sections of the book when the pace picked up. I also enjoyed the quirky, slightly paranormal touch with the ravens as well. I thank Storm Publishing and netgalley for the arc provided in exchange for an honest review of the book.
A huge thank you to NetGalley, Storm Publishing and author Kim Griswell for providing me with the eARC of “Murder at Last Chance Cove”, in exchange for my honest review.

First Book in the Pacific Northwest Cozy Mysteries Series
Saffi Graywood, a writer looking for inspiration for her latest book, as well as recent widower, is battling to find a new place to call home. After moving from place to place in her RV, she funds herself settling into Last Chance Cove for the summer, where she hopes to spend her time exploring and finishing her latest book. Things do not go according to plan when Saffi finds the dead body of the RV park manager, and is lead into a tangle of sleuthing to find out who dunnit.
Saffi is not your normal cozy mystery heroine as she is a little older, but not so much wiser and she finds herself tangled up in a murder mystery, where she may even be a suspect.
As cozy murder mysteries go, this was enjoyable, although a little convoluted as there was a lot going on and it was sometimes hard to keep up. There was also a lot of characters introduced throughout the novel, all of whom were suspects at some point, making it hard to almost keep up with. However, this is the first in a series, and as we get more titles, it will become easier to distinguish between the characters, who are all very entertaining in their own right.
Set on the Pacific Northwest coast, the aptly named Last Chance Cover has a host of quirky characters who provide a vibrant community for this cosy crime mystery. Saffi is still grieving the loss of her husband Levi, who died suddenly just when they were finally spending quality time together. To come to terms with her loss and to honour his memory, Saffi has continued her RV journey, writing successful books about mysterious creatures and happenings and a travel-oriented blog. When she arrives in the cove, the weather changes for the worse, and a woman goes missing. Not satisfied with the accidental status the police give the incident, she decides to investigate something which draws in the whole community and propagates an increasingly menacing ethos. The characterisation is spot on in this story, and that's what makes it so good. It's easy to visualise them and the vivid setting, and the mystical twist of the ravens adds a lovely twist to the tale. I quickly invested in Saffi, and the story proved to be an entertaining read. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
What I liked: Murder at Last Chance Cove has a sympathetic and fun female main character in Saffi. She is a middle-aged writer who lost her husband a few years ago. She is continuing their shared passion of traveling the states in an RV, and she has come to Last Chance Cove, an Oregon RV Park, to enjoy the views and finish her latest book. But when the park owner is killed in an "accident" that Saffi suspects is murder, Saffi must help solve the crime. The descriptions of the Pacific Northwest scenery are breath-taking, and Saffi is a complex and engaging character, as are the townspeople she meets.
What I disliked: The book began to drag a little toward the middle. It's hard to put my finger on exactly why, but I had trouble finishing it. I did find the ending satisfying, and I plan to read the next in the series.
Overall: A fun cozy mystery with great characters and beautiful descriptions. Thanks to and NetGalley for providing the advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
Murder at Last Chance Cove is exactly what you’d expect from a cozy mystery: a small coastal town, quirky/noisy neighbors, a sudden murder and an amateur sleuth who can’t help but get involved.
This was a chill, relaxing read... the kind of mystery you pick up with tea. What I really appreciated is that the characters are past their 20s, so the unnecessary immature drama was skipped completely. Instead, we get grief, growth and friendships that felt lived-in.
The mystery itself? Nicely done. The killer wasn’t obvious, and it actually took me a few tries before I figured it out ... much later in the book, not at the very beginning. That balance kept it engaging without ever feeling too heavy.
As a series opener, I’d call this a good, solid start. It’s not groundbreaking, but it has atmosphere, heart, and enough intrigue to make me curious about where Saffi Graywood will end up next.
I received an ARC from the Publisher, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.
Recently and suddenly widowed author Saffi has embarked on a peripatetic RV tour as a way to learn to deal with her grief. She comes to the opposite coast and a nice little RV park in a small town with hope of being alone to write and deal. Fine until she finds the body of the park manager and her curiosity/investigative needs has her digging into the community and the murder while falling into amazing red herrings and sneaky plot twists. Hope to follow this series with its interesting characters! and Ravens. I requested and received a temporary electronic review galley from Storm Publishing via NetGalley. Kim Griswell is a "new to me" author who has penned a very entertaining cozy mystery. I was pulled into the story from the first chapter and the swift pacing of the story kept me engaged.
Saffi Graywood was a strong yet vulnerable character. Being a widow who feels as if she's lost her "home", she travels in her Rambler RV around the country researching interesting stories of places and people for her book series. However in Last Chance Cove, she now faces a new challenge - investigating a murder. Descriptive writing of both the town and the quirky inhabitants made Last Chance Cove come to life for me. There are some really great red herrings that kept me sure of my wrong conclusions while the twists kept me turning the pages until the reveal. I will be watching for the next one in this series as well as other books by this author.
I voluntarily reviewed a digital Advance Reader Copy of this book from Storm Publishing via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own.
Saffi Graywood, anxious to find a place to finish her latest book, finds her way to the lovely Last Chance Cove, along the Oregon coastline. It had been three years since she lost her husband, and it had been difficult for her to get used to living alone. She soon learns that this small town may be just what she needs. Just as she fits in with the locals over morning coffee and gossip sessions, things change quickly when she discovers the body of the RV park manager in the woods surrounding the park. She suddenly finds herself involved in trying to solve a real-life mystery instead of writing about one. Last Chance Cove is a typical small town where the folks are friendly and helpful as they go about their daily business. As Saffi conducts her real-life investigation, she finds herself in an exciting situation full of drama that is unlike anything she could have ever imagined writing in her own mystery series. Could this experience change her life as a writer entirely?
Murder at Last Chance Cove caused a couple of things. It made me want to join the RV life, and it made me want to visit the Pacific Northwest. Minus the murder of course. Saffi Graywood is an interesting character. She has lost a husband. She writes Bedside Reader books that apparently are often about true crime. She is like a dog with a bone when she is following an idea or a theory. This trait meant that Saffi got herself into a number of dangerous situations in the book. It meant that she might lose the new friends she was making in Last Chance Cove. It meant that the poor detective in town was quite beleaguered. This is the first book in the series, and it seems there will be lots of fun to come as Saffi settles in Last Chance Cove and more adventures begin. Oh, don’t miss the cookies. I enjoyed reading the book. Thanks to Storm Publishing and Netgalley for the chance to read the book.
