Itarah 1: Rabbit Hole is an intriguing coming-of-age, fantasy novel. Eden's grandfather, who raised him, is a high-ranking official in the government. The High Council, the land’s governing body, has outlawed the use of magic, and all magical creatures must have all magical properties removed. This means fairies must have their wings cut off, gorgons must have their eyes removed, etc.
In this dystopian and draconian system, all magical creatures suffer. This is done under the pretense that magic use will open a portal to another realm. If opened, this portal will unleash horror upon the world.
The book features two interesting calls to action for the soon-to-be hero. First, his grandfather is tasked with reopening the portal. This will cause destruction but hopefully squash any rebellion that may be brewing. Simultaneously, Eden accidentally causes a stuffed rabbit to come to life. The now-living rabbit claims to be inhabited by a farm boy. But as the story progresses, the rabbit's knowledge of magic and other matters makes this seem less likely. In any case, Eden is tasked with bringing the rabbit back to a distant land where he can reunite his spirit with his body.
Along the way, Eden makes friends with Sera, a fairy, whom he rescues mid-wing-removal surgery, and Phil, a faun.
The book has quite a few story arcs. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I will only mention the portal, the rabbit, and Eden’s conflict with his grandfather, but there are quite a few more.
As I mentioned before, there are two calls to action. And likewise, I find the book hard to plot on Freytag's Pyramid, especially as one arc is resolved and we move into another. The book ends with a delightful mystery and foreshadowing for the next book in the series.
I would recommend this book for readers who might be interested in an unconventional fantasy. The characters are compelling, the world is vivid and emotional, and the book is hard to put down.

I have to say first off, that corresponding with Audrey was such a pleasure. Professional and polite, Audrey reached out to me with the offer to read and review her book and I am so thrilled she did. I admit, I took my time with this one and savoured every word put to paper.
In this world I am in now, the computer age, we are lacking. So when an Indie author crosses my path, I want to jump for joy. Real human written words all wrapped up in a beautiful package.
The art on this book gives me Art Nouveau impression. Its simply beautiful. The artist information for Itarah can be found on her website. It is that attention to detail that was such a welcome treat.
This book is one of the best I have read in along time and it starts with the characters. They feel real, complex and emotional. The lives and choices of these characters matter. A lot of authors struggle to make it happen, Audrey succeeded. From wizards to swordsman and all the hidden in plain sight magical creatures you'll find something that speaks to you. What is also really meaningful and speaks to the ages is that these characters are likeable and relatable.
The world building in this book goes hand and hand with the characters. Its detailed enough that you can follow along and map it in your head but, if you sign up for Audrey's newsletter on her site you can download a beautiful map. Absolutely great bonus for signing up. The locations were described in rich detail that definitely let your imagination take hold, you could almost close your eyes for a moment and wonder what it would be like in that spot.
Itarah - Rabbit Hole is a beautiful well written story full of twists and turns, the ups and downs and even the love to hate and hate to love characters that every good book needs. The hidden gem in this book is what you expect the character to do and what the character becomes or is in secret is the best surprise. I can not wait to pick up book two and continue my journey in the Itarah series.
I absolutely recommend this book if you are looking for a palate cleanser to get away from viral fast reads. Let your mind savour this story and take all the moments to sit with it. Its a connection with fictional characters I have not had in a great long time and we need to have that experience again in our lives.

Aujourd’hui je vous parle d’une fantasy pas comme les autres puisqu’elle sort de tout ce qu’on a l’habitude de lire. Enfin, personnellement, je n’en ai pas encore lue comme celle-ci.
On va voyager à travers cette histoire en se questionnant autour du bien et du mal et ce que c’est.
Nous avons un beau groupe de personnages formé qui ne savent pas où ils mettent les pieds… tout comme moi ! J’ai adoré voir l’évolution d’Eden que je trouve de plus en plus mature au fil des pages. Quant aux autres personnages, ils ne sont pas en reste. Chacun a une place importante dans le récit : ce magicien qui ne sait rien de la magie, ce lapin en peluche qui parle, cette fée mutilée et ce faune un brin alcoolique…
L’action ne manque pas. Nous avons l’envie de savoir ce qui va se passer et ne plus arrêter de lire. En plus de ça, ce roman ajoute une petite dose de légèreté avec de l’humour, une quête que l’on veut suivre et ces personnages attachants.
Et cette fin du premier tome ne donne qu’une envie : continuer notre lecture. Je n’ai pas pu attendre et c’est dans l’immédiat que je me suis plongée dans le second opus !
