Blood Legacy

Rate this book
Latest release in the V V Inn Series from New York Times & USA Today Bestselling author, C.J. Ellisson.

Despite surviving silver poisoning, Vivian isn’t out of the fire yet. Rolando is still alive, as is his desire to eliminate all manipulator vampires like her. The streets of Buenos Aires prove to be a tricky hunting ground for Vivian and her husband Rafe, especially when a paranormal serial killer starts leaving bodies behind.

Overwhelmed amidst the city’s chaos, they seek help from Jon, Vivian's werewolf servant and the couple’s right-hand man. As the deaths continue, a local alpha under scrutiny for the crimes threatens to blame Jon and reveal his master’s daytime location—if they don’t find the real culprit.

It’s a race for the trio to stop the killings, uncover the truth, and catch the vampire responsible for Vivian’s torture—before the supernatural locals pick up their proverbial pitchforks and stop them all, for good.

Original Post at Fangs, Wands and Fairy Dust 3/11/15: BLOOD LEGACY OFFERS UNEXPECTED WISDOM

http://fangswandsandfairydust.com/201...

ARC provided by author for review. No remuneration was exchanged and all opinion presented herein is my own except as noted.

This is the fourth book in the VV Inn series. I really enjoy the story: C. J. has quite a lot of imagination. I like Vivian/Dria more than I did before; she doesn’t seem as hard or glib as she used to seem to me. Either she’s softer or I am. Hmm. It’s also nice to feel that Dria, who always seems to have anticipated everything, and who is terribly powerful is also vulnerable and needs her husband, her vampire servant, Jon (who is a werewolf) and who undergoes his own emotional trials here.

And C.J.’s story is really imaginative and intricate. Each character has a role in to play — there aren’t any extraneous people or critters. I felt the plot was sometimes a little loose and occasionally found myself saying but, why don’t they just,…

Then, every so often C.J. throws in a nugget of wisdom about seeking peace, satisfaction and happiness that is kind of unexpected in the context of the genre and what one would expect to be a more action and erotica based tale.

For example,
Some people are happier wrapped in hate. It’s a sad state to be in, but there it is (loc 2319, E-ARC).

Here’s my big issue with the book. And it’s been through the series really. It is written in the first-person immediate alternating between Vivian/Dria’s, Rafe’s, and Jon’s points of view. I find the head hopping confusing. I don’t always finish a chapter in the same sitting as when I start, so it’s easy to forget who is speaking and then I have to regain my bearings. Even inside a chapter I get confused by this.

I’m not a big fan of immediate narratives, meaning you are seeing things at the same time as the character — like you’re watching someone recount something under hypnosis where they think they are experiencing it, or watching an exploratory reality TV show. You know, “I’m walking quietly so as not to disturb the wild beast sleeping in his cave.” I don’t understand how we’re supposed to believe the story when it is always being narrated this way and it is exhausting. At times, it’s also confusing because of the way we tell stories and learning and understanding isn’t as immediate as this form of narration. And, I don’t feel the characters are written with distinct voices that set them apart from each other.

Yes, it’s immediate in the sense of impact, but I prefer a omniscient narrator or at least a past tense format. Or if it has to be this way limit the heads we inhabit.

The story takes place in Argentina but, I don;t get a feel for it being a different country. It could be any city with old buildings. I don’t know if it is because of the format; maybe seeing it from inside the three characters’ heads makes it feel less international.

This is technique reminds me of script-writing both in dialogue and stage direction. Maybe it is a personal preference of mine, or perhaps it is considered an avant garde, experimental format.

So there you have it, I was shy to include this mixed review in CJ’s tour. If you like this format and genre, this is a story you will probably enjoy. C. J. has toned the sex down from the original editions of the original series. It’s not quite as graphic as it was.

I tore through the earlier books in this series last year. And I do mean TORE THROUGH THEM. As in, I couldn't get enough of Vivian/Dria's crazy, whacked out world and the sexy, often dangerous shenanigans that went along with it.

I adore her relationship with her husband. I like how hard she fought against adding anyone to her seethe, but how she did it anyway when it was needed. I just... like her, She can be ruthless when she needs to be, but she loves with all her heart and she will protect those under her with a single-mindedness that is admirable.

After the events in book 3, Vivian has a powerful need for revenge. To work toward that, she summons Jon to Buenos Aires with her and Rafe. I won't say things go to hell, but they don't necessarily go smoothly for the trio.

(As an aside, while I get what Vivian was trying to accomplish with Jon when she pushed him toward the female wolf, part of me cringed at the tough spot Jon was placed in. With his new lady friend back in Alaska--one he should probably tell Vivian about so something like this doesn't arise again--there was a whole lot of potential for things to turn out badly and I didn't want that. I like the guy. He's finally working his way through his obsession with Vivian and I didn't want anything to screw that up.)

We learn a few secrets about the vampires (more than a few, actually) and see just how diabolically clever Vivian can be when it comes to protecting her own secrets. Fast paced and nicely bloody (well, there were a few bodies strewn around, in any case), I can't wait to see what Vivian and her crew encounter next.

My favorite sexy red headed vampire is back for another exciting V V Inn adventure! Vivian & Rafe stay in Buenos Aires and summon Vivian's vampire servant Jon to join them in search of the missing vampire villain Rolando. The trio enlists the help of the young wizard Justin in finding their evil foe. Some very interesting new characters are introduced.....witches, a sexy werewolf and lots of magic takes the reader on a wild and crazy coaster ride in this 4th edition to the paranormal romance series. This wonderful tale is loaded with suspense at every turn as well hot steamy love scenes with our favorite couple. So buckle up, hang on and be prepared for a jaw dropping ending!

C.J. Ellisson writing it quite unique in that the books in her V.V. Inn series is told from first person and usually by 2-3 characters. She rotates characters’ POV through chapters, with each chapter being told from a different character. In Blood Legacy we get Dria/Vivian, Rafe and Jon’s POVs. I’ve come to enjoy this kind of story telling because we get the main characters’ thoughts and a bigger picture of what’s going on.

In Blood Legacy Dria/Vivian is still dealing with the events that happened in Big Game. She’s has healed from the silver poisoning from her kidnapping at the hands of Caroline the evil vampire that was part of the Tribunal.

Most of the V.V. Inn series takes place in Alaska but this time around the gang is in Buenos Aires hunting down the vampire that got away, Rolando. While Dria/Vivian, Rafe and Jon hunted down Rolando they are also roped into helping the local werewolf pack’s alpha to clear her name of animal-like attacks that’s been happening around Buenos Aires.

Jon is “ordered” by Dria/Vivian to get close the female alpha in order to learn a new werewolf skill that could be very helpful to Jon and his slowly growing pack back home in Alaska. But since Jon finally has a girlfriend (that he hides from Dria/Vivian) he doesn’t want to seduce the female alpha.

Blood Legacy is full of vampire and werewolf drama with some sexiness added to the mystery and mayhem.

C.J. definitely knows how to flow the story very well in each of her books, and builds up the story to an exciting ending. C.J. also knows to keep the reader reading from each chapter by leaving you hanging at the end of each one. Hence, the reasoning behind not wanting to put it down because you want to know what happens in the next chapter and so forth.

I give this book 5 stars and highly recommend it to PNR/UF readers out there. If you haven't picked up this series yet, I highly recommend you do.

Well I was ready to give it a bad review because I was finding it boring but motherfuckers I got the rug pulled from under me hard and mind you I don't use bad words on reviews but this one got me hard when the plot exploded that hard I did not expect two manipulators so inside the council and then the recount of Atlantis I swore Persephone and Esmeralda where the person but I was wrong and that end Rafe wanting to be a wizard and Jon trying to get a partial shift glorious.

You’re about to get some answers! The characters we love have had enough. It’s time to solve the mystery of who is after Dria and why. There are also new characters and they are intriguing. I loved reading this author’s take on the magical community, it’s refreshingly different from other supernatural books I have read. Once again, there is mystery, humor, suspense, and steam! Another great read in the V V Inn series.

I loved it... BOTH times I read it!

Dria survived and is out for the kill to get down to business. Rafe finds himself a magic teacher in the end, and Dria isn't sure what to think yet. Jon is ready to go home for the first time. Can't wait until the team heads home to the others in the seethe to give an update on all that they've been up to. This is definitely a busy book and lots of stuff has happened in a short period of time. Love, love, love it.

Things are getting much more interesting and exciting in the world of the V V Inn. I think this latest addition to the series may be the best one yet. I was totally enthralled.

If you have been following the series you know Vivian – the vampire master – was badly injured toward the end of the last book, Big Game, and needed time to heal. In Blood Legacy we find that she has healed up well, but that both her and Rafe – Vivian’s human husband – have been changed. They are both even more protective of the each other, if that is even possible.

They are still in Argentina – Buenos Aires to be precise. They have sent everyone else of the seethe back home to Alaska, and called on Jon – Vivian’s werewolf servant – to join them in Buenos Aires. Jon isn’t sure he wants to go. He and Candy are just getting to know each other really well and he isn’t ready to tell Vivian about Candy. But his master has called, and he did pledge to serve.

It was quite interesting to see these three characters interacting away from the Inn. We get a sense of just how disgustingly rich Vivian is, as well as how much these three really care for each other, as well as their group back at the Inn. They will literally do anything to keep everyone safe.

The action and suspense of Blood Legacy is spell binding. As usual there are murders to solve and as usual, there is a plethora of suspects. Just when we think it is all figured out, someone lobs a curve ball. When I thought I knew “who dun it” – surprise!

Although the voice of this story was divided between Vivian, Rafe, and Jon – each getting an alternating chapter in turn – this story moves along well and cohesively. I was flipping pages just as fast as I could and actually enjoyed seeing things happen from each point of view.

The mystery of this book may do okay as a stand-alone read, but I would advise that you begin at the beginning. There is backstory on the characters that will enrich the reading experience of this one. That being said, I look forward to the next book. Although Blood Legacy did not end on a cliffhanger, it was left open for much more story. Such is the case of the Urban Fantasy and this one is just getting better and better as it goes along. I am so glad I have stuck with it.

I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a great read! By far I would say this is my favorite of the series up to this point. I don't have the next books in the series yet, but I definitely plan to get them soon! The series is getting very good.

I'll start with the main issue of contention that began with the second book: the multiple perspectives. In this book, there are only three POVs. As Ellison eluded previously, she brought this one back down from the six that previous books contained. I think the six were difficult to follow. Three can still be difficult, but if you don't stop in the middle of a chapter it's not really an issue. I also think that reading the story from other character's perspective can be essential. You get a better idea of how different characters are feeling and what they are thinking.

Now to the story. I am loving how things have progressed. This book picks up a few weeks after book 3, Big Game. (If you haven't read the previous books I recommend reading them in order first, but also book 4 was a little different and wasn't a part of the bigger Vivian story.) This book delves deeper into the vampire "political" scene. There are dangers around every corner, some they know about while others are dropped into their laps, and some are watching from the shadows. The intrigue in this book is written exceptionally well. And I never saw the end game coming. Great read!

Also of note, for me, I found far fewer editorial mistakes than in past books. So much more enjoyable when there aren't many of them. Some don't bother me, but a ton starts to get on my nerves. That made this book even more easy to read for me and more enjoyable.

This is book 5 in V V Inn series and if you're as big a fan as I am, you've read them all but if you haven't read the others, I suggest that you start at the beginning.

This is an amazing series that's hot (sometimes really hot) sweet (Like stand the test of time sweet) as well as laugh out loud funny but so many of those in this particular story.

This book takes up not long after book four left off. Vivian (Dria) had been hiding out after barely surviving silver poisoning from a couple of vampires that wanted her to give up her secret. The secret that she's a manipulator and can control the minds of humans as well as vampires. This secret is one test she has kept hidden for more than five hundred years and must continue to keep otherwise she will be executed.

Now that she's better she meets up with both Rafe and Jon in Buenos Aires to search for Rolando, the vampire test hot away but their going to need help. Not only can they not find Rolando but their are strange killings that are happening around the city. Could these killings be caused by a paranormal shift in the city or has someone summoned that were thought to be only myths?

This is once again an amazing book by C. J. Ellison and while it ends on a somewhat cliffhanger you still get closer to this particular story while leading into the next which in my opinion cannot get published soon enough. I really can't wait to see how it plays out with Jon and Candy and I'm intrigued to find out what the deal is with Justin as well.

ARC Review
A long waited addition to the VVInn series.
I'll try not to spoil anything.

First off:
One piece of advice, for you established fans, reread the series especially the previous story. Just to refresh background information/plot etc. in your mind. I struggled with trying to remember plots/info from the previous books and novellas.

Now for the main:
It took a while for me to really get into the book. At first, Dria is suffering from PTS and is not her usual self.
A lot of the preliminary chapters contain characters' inner monologues and their current actions as a result of the traumas in the last major book.

When the pace finally picks up you are engaged with the twists and turns, new character and talents introduced.

I particularly enjoyed how Jon and Rafe's characters became more dominate in this book. It was their chapters I liked. Though Jon is treated like an annoying sidekick at times but he holds his own.

Definitely a "lock the door, switch off the phone, block out the world book reading time" kind of book. I had to reread some pages because they were heavy in dialogue or plot and I was trying to deal with life encroachments at the same time, so I got lost at times.

Once again, we are left wanting more, and patience isn't my strongest characteristic at times.

Vivian has survived her torture and only one of her captor's is still at large. She nearly died. Now she will track down and kill Rolando. Rafe, her mate, is in Buenos Aries preparing for her arrival. What dangers will they face? Vivian is such a strong and compelling character. I enjoy following her dangerous exploits. The passion she shares with Rafe is amazing. When they are together, sparks fly and danger surrounds them. Vivian is unstoppable. Her courage and foresight make for a compelling story. Jon has pledge his loyalty to Vivian and he means what he says. He is a wolf shifter who knows how to get things done. He has a dream to unit all the packs and he won't stop until it becomes a fact. I enjoyed the interaction between Rafe and Jon. It added a different vibe to the story. Blood Legacy is a roller coaster ride of suspense and non-stop action. C.J. Ellisson did an amazing job. I can't wait for the next book in The V V Inn series. Just be aware that this book ends with cliff hanger. It left me breathless and wanting answers

It's been awhile since I read the last book of series. However, C.J. Ellisson does a great job catching the reader up without bogging down, but wish I would have reviewed Big Game before starting this book to make sure I haven't forgotten any detail or nuances. I approached this book with the assumption that it would be a simple "Get Rolando" plot. Boy was I underestimating the book; it was that and so much more. Ellisson expertly weaved together other -- at first glance -- seemingly disparate plots with the local werewolf pack, culturally relevant (to South America) "extinct" supernaturals, and witches and wizards into Dria's/Vivian's search for Rolando. Well done and great edition to the series.

Another captivating book in the VV Inn series with some great twists and turns in the plot. It is told from three points of view (Dria's, Rafe's and Jon's) and once again it takes you on an action packed journey of intrigue, suspense and sensuality. The friend/foe relationship between Rafe and Jon never ceases to entertain but it is perhaps becoming less antagonistic as Jon pulls away from his obsession to with Dria, to becomes more invested in his new love interest (which his Vampire Master is as yet unaware). Jon's character continues to develop and become more interesting with each book. I look forward to watching his relationship with his new love unfold in future books. As always the depth of feeling, chemistry and sensuality between Dria, and her husband is woven seamlessly throughout the book, and never fails to titivate. A very enjoyable read that leaves you wanting the next book.

Another hit for the V V Inn and the most wonderful C.J.!!

LOVE IT! I'm such a big fan of the V V Inn series, and love how this one focuses in with our three characters, Drea (or Vivian) vampire manipulator extraordinaire, her super sexy hubby Rafe, and the ever chunky Jon (Drea's blood servant). Drea is recovering from the torture while imprisoned by her own vampire counsel. Rolando is still MIA and Drea wants him found and interrogated for his part in the imprisonment, but Rafe and Jon want something much more permanent, like death. Will they find him and get her answers or serve him his death? Is Rafe and Jon going to be able to handle her wants, when they just want to be her protectors. And can Jon handle being around Drea while he has his budding relationship with Candy? Oh, the agony for the book.

AWESOME (little spoilers)

I would love to give this more stars if I could! This is another book in the V V Inn series and they just keep getting better. Vivian, Rafe and Jon are on a mission to find the nasty vampire that helped get her taken and abused. She almost died if not for Rafe her mate. They come back to get revenge and find something else that needs taking care of .
I have to say C J Ellison does spectacular writing and the V V Inn series is one of her many great series. I do recommend reading them in order though so you can appreciate the wonderful story line. Again I'm sad that the book ended and wait not to patiently for the next! Trust me you'll love this series!

C.J. Ellison does it again. I thought the characters continued to evolve and the relationship of Dria, her husband Rafe, and Jon was interesting to follow. Trouble seems to find Vivan wherever she goes and even sometimes she goes looking for it like when the hunt is on for Ronaldo. The idea of a vampire council of the elders was interesting to watch as it continues to unfold. I thought it was a little slow in the first few chapters recalling events like the silver poisoning from the previous book but once it got going it was good. The only draw back I felt was that I had to go back and re-read the previous book to recall Dria's events. I still found it well written and it never hurts to re-read a great author's book. I would recommend it and all of her others in the series as well.

Blood Legacy is a continuation of the Vampire Vacation series. This book starts where Big Game leaves off. Vivian is recuperating while Rafe is scouring Buenos Aires for the vampire that caused his wife harm.
Rafe and Jon, both have leading roles in this story. As Vivian's protectors they both are tossed into situations that test their abilities.
Twists abound in this continuing saga. Answers to why Vivian was so cruelly tortured in Big Game are revealed, and her darkest fears seem to be coming to past.
I do believe this is one of the best books in the series. With each book you can see the master wordsmith at work weaving tales that capture the imagination, delighting the soul with characters that vividly come alive as you read.

When I first started reading Blood Legacy, I had to catch up because I hadn't read the rest of the books in awhile. But I managed to catch up withing just a few PAGES because of C.J.'s descriptions. I couldn't put this book down, I read it in under a day! Creative cliffhangers at the end of chapters really push you to keep reading. The story itself is intriguing and captivating and I felt really invested in Dria, Rafe, and Jon's adventures while trying to find Rolando and figure out why Dria was treated the way she was. I kept trying to imagine what was going to happen next but C.J. put some shocking twists and turns in, making the story even better! I love these books and these characters and I already want to read the next installment!

Another great book in the series. Rave and Dria are still in Argentina, but they have traded out Drew and Paul for Dria's servant Jon. They are still on the hunt for Roland, and now Persephone shows up for some added fun.

Justin the wizard is now a big help since some added magical killer are thrown in. Add a sexy female werewolf that can change so she is both wolf and human. Who is giving Jon some trouble as his and Candy's relationship grows stronger and is still a secret from Dria.

The story moves along fast and we find out the secret of why a Vampire should never turn a witch. And that Paul might be in more danger than before.

And Justin might just have a family secret in Alaska.

All in all a very good book.

I was priveledged to receive an ARC of this, the fourth in the VV Inn series.
This is set in Buenos Aires, as Dria (Vivienne) recovers from being tortured by the ancients. With her beloved husband, Rafe and trusty werewolf servant, Jon by her side, Dria sets out to uncover the mysteries of several unnatural killings in the area.
A gripping, edge of the seat tale of of witches, wizards, werewolves, shifters and creatures thought to exist only in fairy tales. With a few steamy scenes between the husband and wife thrown in, I cannot recommend this highly enough.
C J Ellisson is the Queen of erotic urban fantasy, I can't wait for the next in the series.

The long awaited next installment of the V V Inn series is finally here. Was the wait worth it? ABSOLUTELY!!!!! C.J. has taken our beloved heroes/heroines and the readers on a whirlwind roller coaster ride. Blood Legacy has such amazing imagery that you feel as if you’re right there going through the feelings, battles, love, suspense…it grabs you by the seat of your pants and away you go. I have been a fan of this series for a few years, but this book has quickly become my favorite. This is definitely one that I will enjoy reading over and over! Awesome job as always C.J. Ellisson!

I was so excited for this installment of the next VV Inn series. It starts right where you left off and the storyline continues to build. C.J. Ellisson has a great way of connecting with your curiosity. She pulls you in and you never want to leave. Her characters flow so well with each other, which makes the book so easy to read. She not only gives you a great storyline but great romance. I would recommend this to any paranormal romance fan or any romance fan for that matter. Great addition to this series !

quick read

The multiple view points was probably my biggest issue with this book. Sometimes its good to have different perspectives...just not every chapter. There were times when the POV changed and I wasn't quite ready to have it do so. I think by changing POV so much the reader lost the intimacy and sassiness from the first couple of books...there wasn't enough time to get the full picture.

I do like these characters and the storylines are quick and easy to read. We'll see what is in store for Dria, Rafe and Jon soon....

I love this series, it's one of my favorites. I enjoyed this book and all the characters. I'm very happy that Jon is becoming his own person and hopefully having his mate :) I did miss a lot of the characters from previous books but hopefully the next book will incorporate all them back in. I love seeing Dria, Rafe and Jon kick butt in the books! I can't wait for the next one and hope there's more to come! Some people don't like the story being told from different point of views but I really enjoy it and wish more authors did it.

This is the best of the v v Inn to date. Dria and Rafe are still in Brazil but they have sent for Jon. There have been a string gruesome murders that seem to be linked to the wizard Justin. Dria decides to investigate. Meanwhile, Jon has met with the Alpha of the local pack who is female and has the ability shift partially. They soon discover that the murders are a trap to lure Dria into a meeting with a manipulator vampire who wants a list of all her children so they can recruit them for unknown purposes. I can't wait to discover whether not Dria can reach her offspring before the others do.

Suspenseful !

This one had me biting my fingernails and sitting on the edge of my seat, not just because of the physical dangers the characters faced but also the emotional minefields they had to navigate. I caught myself cringing, reading with one eye open, muttering "no, no, no, don't do it" under my breath, and turning pages as fast as I possibly could. If you've read the previous books in the series and grown attached to the characters like I have, then this book is a roller coaster ride. I can't wait for the next one!
