What I liked: This story had a twist that I wasn't expecting with Luqas and Toch. Toch is hailed as the savior of the people the Spidon call "ants", and while he can't be openly rejoiced or he could be killed Toch knows what he was born to do, just like Luqas knows he was born to protect Toch. While I found the abilities that some people on this planet have interesting, I wish there had been more of those powers shown because I assume everyone has a different level of what they can do with these abilities. I just thought it would have been a really cool topic for the author to explore so I could further immerse myself in the setting.

What I didn't like: I just felt like too much was crammed into a short story. It seemed hasty and I didn't get the chance to connect with the characters, any of them. If it had been fleshed out into a full length novel I might have liked it a lot better than I did because then I could have seen more of the characters and decided on whether or not I even liked the characters. I'm more "meh" to them because I didn't really get a whole sense of personality, I didn't feel any real need to root for them. I wasn't going to root for these people just because they're being oppressed by off-world aliens, I wanted a real reason to cheer them on to victory over their oppressors. And I didn't get that. Also, I don't quite recall a name for the people on this planet or the planet itself, just that the enemies are called Spidon and apparently ugly outside of this suit of armor they wear while on the planet. Oh, and they apparently emit some kind of goo that stinks?

Overall Review: Not all that great, it had some interesting points and I think the author missed out on character growth and the ability to expand upon this world the Spidon's have kept under their rule for centuries. I think a little backstory to the way the Spidon took over the planet as an introduction to the story would have been really neat, seeing how the people came up with the Plan and everything. It would have made for a real nice setup to the story. Other than that though, I wanted this story to be able to me me think about it again later on but I don't think that'll happen, because it was short and didn't have the elements to keep me glued to the page throughout the story. It only got interesting towards the very end of the story after we learn something new about Luqas.

Recommend?: No, not really. I mean, don't me deter you from reading whatever you fancy but it just wasn't good enough for me to recommend to anyone else personally.

Okay, let's get this straight from the beginning. This is not a book. It's a short story. If it were a book, I might have liked it, as then the plot lines might have played out and become something worthwhile. As it is, the story is truncated and bereft of much of its impact.

Laboring under an alien overlord, the 'ants' as their overlord calls them, have, over the course of generations, bred a final solution. A pair of boys -- the prime weapon and its protector. Before they're old enough to do their job properly, one of the ants betrays them, resulting in the death of the weapon. But, wait! There's more! The protector's still alive and he can take out the enemy too -- at the cost of others dying first and getting injured himself.

And that's it. That's the whole story. I feel cheated.

I received an electronic copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.

Prime is an interesting novella. At roughly fifty pages, it serves as a great introduction to, what I hope, will be a series. Toch and Luqas are best friends, but they’re more than that. In a world where humans are looked upon as ants, working as labor forces for an alien race, the Spidon, both of them have a destiny to fulfill. Toch’s destiny is to become the Prime, the being who would, according to legend, save humnity from the Spidon. He has a genetic power lying within him, waiting until he becomes an adult. Luqas is his Protector, who – as the title suggests – has to keep him safe from the Spidon. But when someone brings out the truth about Toch, and who he is, the future of the human race has in the balance…

The story is fast-paced and we’re thrown right in the middle of the action with two likeable, engaging protagonists. I liked Luqas the most of both of them, but both characters, as well as the secondary characters, were intriguing. The book had a few surprising twists, especially at the end.

An engaging, well-written novella. I’m already looking forward to the next book by this author.

It is the future, or is it the past? Prime never quite makes it clear when, or even where the action is set. The world has been conquered by the alien Spidrons for the last few centuries, but a plan to find freedom is about to reach fruition and it falls on two young men to fulfill the prophecy.

Prime is an interesting book, it subverts a lot of the 'chosen one' tropes and delivers a fast paced read. The way the powers worked were quite unique and it was an interesting take on the 'take back our planet' scenario.

The characters worked quite well together and I enjoyed reading about their struggles. The only niggling issue is that far too much of the book was conducted via conversation. The book at times felt more like a script than a work of prose.

Still a solid effort that I sailed through in a very short space of time.

Harboring genetics perfected over generations, Toch has been prepared since birth to be his race’s savior, but when the ruling Spidon get word of his powers before they’ve matured, the fate of humans hangs in the balance.

In Windsor Harries’ post-apocalyptic society, each member of the human race, looked upon as ants by their alien rulers, is bred and destined for a specific lot in life. Prime, a dystopian novella, follows two young boys hardly old enough to truly understand their destinies; one with the perfect genetic coding to allow him to defeat the Spidon, Toch, and one destined to protect him, Luqas. Best friends, Toch and Luqas are inseparable for more reasons that either ever thought, with destinies irrevocably intertwined in Harries’ cleverly twisting plot.

This was a great read. The plot was intriguing. Knowing it was a novella I knew the story wouldn't be long but I wanted to read more. As it was though I was compelled to keep reading to find out what would happen next. And the ending was perfect...as well as the middle...and the beginning. There were however times a disliked the main character. He came across as a petulant child not one who had been raised with he weight of a civilization on his shoulders. Those moments were short and few though so forgivable. I would have like to learn a little more background of the Spidrons and Axions as a race. I would definitely read more by this author. I hope to see more from this world. Perhaps a prequel set during the war.

I find it hard to review this book. I thought the ideas in the book were interesting, it's just that it doesn't really feel like a fleshed-out story. This made it hard to care about the characters, since I knew practically nothing about it. Fantasy is not a novella-genre: it's a genre with books of 500 pages, and that book is just one part of a 5-book series. This book made it clear why this is so.
I also found some plot twists hard to swallow.

SPOILER ALERT!
For instance, why is Toch told he is the Prime and the Luqas is his Protector, while they in fact both are the Prime? What's the use of that, why had it to be kept secret? It doesn't make any sense to me, other than, from the author's point of view, to add a nice plot twist.

Two young boys, not even matured yet, in a world where they are oppressed. But one is meant to save them all and the other protect him. He is the Prime. He was born for this and it is his destiny. A secret they are never told make it all unfold in a way you could not have guessed.

This book was great. I couldn't stop reading once I started it. It is very well written and makes you connect with the characters. You feel their pain while reading what they are going through.

I honestly hope there is another book. I loved it and highly recommend it for all types of readers out there

Really short, fast paced, fun read.

A dystopian society under alien obligation is patiently waiting for their savior, the PRIME.
