I've been reading/singing from this book every week of my entire life. I have many pages/songs memorized and look forward to continuing to sing and think about these hymns until I'm singing in that heavenly choir. (Maybe I'll have a better voice then.)

This are the songs we sing every Sunday. I recommend to any other Mormons to learn a lesson that a very important person has taught me.
This year of 2010, I had the great privilege of singing in the choir for the Young Women's Broadcast. It was a wonderful experience. Before the broadcast we all sang, ate lunch, listened to talks, then sang a hymn. For the hymn they passed out small pieces of paper, we all looked down and had to squint to read. After the song, we were given another remarkable lesson. That we did not fill the spirit as much when we bent down to read as we did when we sang our memorized songs, she challenged us to try to memorize hymns so during sacrament on Sundays we could sit up straight and sing surely to let the spirit in.
The very next day, Sunday, I went to my cousin's farewell at his ward. It just so happened that since conference was going to be held on Easter that the ward was doing an Easter program that day. The many minutes of the Sacrament was singing hymns. I was determined to use the lesson I had learned the day before and hardly looked at the words of the text and sang loudly.
It was the best Easter program I have ever been to. Because I never felt the spirit so much at others as I had then.

I find it funny that had given this book one or two stars did not leave a review with it. I'm sure some of them just felt that it deserved one star, but what if some of them gave it one or two stars just because?

This is the music book that I play from most often when I sit down at the piano. I almost have to force myself to play from something else. It's amazing how much I like they hymns.

"I own a copy" - well, actually we own 9 copies of this edition in English, 2 of which are the larger piano/organ size. We've also got 2 in Spanish, and 1 in Japanese. Thus, when friends or family are over we can all sing together. We've got some older LDS hymnals (mostly the previous edition), a Lutheran hymnal, and a Presbyterian youth hymnal.

For a history of the hymns see: Our Latter Day Hymns: The Stories And The Messages.

This is the standard hymnal for the LDS church that you'll find in any meeting house. It is comprised of 341 hymns and is standard to a hymnal found elsewhere: the lyrics and the matching note annotations.

Of course there are some hymns that are strictly unique to the LDS faith as seen in hymn 121 "I'm a Pilgrim, I'm a Stranger" seems to account the journey of Lehi's family into the new world. Hymn 274 "The Iron Rod" which is the iron rod story from the Book of Nephi. Hymn 284 "If You Could Hie to Kolob" which can only be understood if your a hardcore LDS researcher, have read The Pearl of Great Price, or are a Mormon.

Thanks!

The information at the back of this hymn book could make an amateur/volunteer church/choir conductor out of anyone. There are some powerful tools, including listing the poetic meter of all the songs so you can choose two songs with the same meter and switch the lyrics to the other tune. There is even advice on how to arrange the hymns for choirs or small groups.

An edition with wire binding is helpful for accompanists. The regular binding will not stay open easily on a music stand until it has been beat up by years of use.

I gave myself a challenge to read through (sang to myself) every verse of every single hymn in this book in order. I also read the scriptures footnoted with each of the hymns. One of the most inspirational and educational activities I’ve done.

I highly recommend.

I recall many a sunday evening spent next to my dad singing our lungs out flipping from one song to the next in the hymn book. Now as a adult, myabe my attention span is a little better, don't know the cause of it. I feel like I am learning my favorites over again. Now with a deeper understanding of them. I really like how at the bottom of every page scriptural references are also provided. It makes a big impact on me to look up thoses references during Sacrament. I know with in the deepest recesses of my being that God not only lives, but loves music. I know that D&C 25:12 is true. Try it! It's an interesting and exciting way to pray always!

I've always loved what seemed to be the obvious intent of the words of hymns. As I do not sing, I find them very hard to sing even for myself.
However, as a convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints I have come to love this book. Our hymnal. Many of the hymns are found in other denominations. Some are known round the world. I have now, after nearly 30 years of singing as best I could, come to cherish these hymns. I believe that our Father in Heaven loved to hear us sing them, as best we can. My heart is tied tightly to several.
Although it is hard to chose a favorite there is one that I keep close. "Abide With Me, Tis' Eventide."

I love the new (1985) Green hymnbook. It has many new hymns (eg. Because I Have Been Given Much) that are very precious to me. But I will always have a tender affinity for the old (Dark Blue) hymnbook. It's hymns are the songs of my childhood. I remember sitting in the old white Chapel in Mapleton, Utah with my grandparents singing such hymns as "Oh Ye Mountains High". Often these days I will meditate on a selection out of the old book as a part of my early morning devotional. This has always helped me set the tone for my scripture study.

Um, by Parley P. Pratt? Well, OK, if you're picking just ONE composer in this book. What can I say? I love the hymns. I'm so glad I was raised on them so that I can know them as well as I do. It's always a surprise to me at how little so many LDS members know of the hymns. This collection has been around for over 20 years. You would think they would use such a glorious resource more. Very sad, for they are missing out on such wonderful lessons, ways of expression, and spiritual experiences.

As a child I would listen to a confident alto in our ward and sing the alto line with her. I believe this helped me learn to sight-read faster as I was learning to play the piano at the same time. So this book helps in many levels of music, feeds one spiritually, and feels so inspired as I have played through all the hymns in this book. I guess that qualifies me as having "read" this book from beginning to end.

Music touches the soul. This is a variety of hymns some familiar and individual to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints written by their own people. Others generally used in all faiths of other Christian Churches. Either way the beauty and diversity is a testimony to the divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ, his celestial son ship to the Father, and his redemptive powers to the humble penitent soul.

This book has a very nice collection of hymns that are great for anyone to sing at worship service. It's a little sad that "Come Thou Fount" is not in this book, but "Nearer My God to Thee," "How Great Thou Art," "Redeemer of Israel," and "Rock of Ages" are included to name a few. Scripture references throughout the book allow it to be used for study along with singing.

When I sing these hymns or hear them sung, they bring me peace and joy and remind me of God's love for me. I am so thankful for the people who wrote them and the people who collected them for us to use. The Lord has said that a song of the heart is a prayer unto God. And with these hymns we have many songs of praise.

Singing from the hymn book taught me how to sight-read. We own about 4-5 hymn books, and I should start trying to memorize them again. Its always handy to know the words and tune when you end up in the back of the overflow from time to time.

I love the hymnbook of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Every song has a fantastic and personal message, and often - if not always - teaches a lesson with its text. As both an organist and a vocalist, I love singing and playing these inspiring hymns.

I love the hymns, especially as they are printed with the music score for parts and accompaniment, to aid practice.
I have learned about 50 of my favourites by heart, and know perhaps half the total. One day I hope to know all of them by heart.

The Hymn is a prayer in song to our Father in Heaven. They bring the Spirit of our Father into our hearts through singing and hearing them. Countless times has my life been influenced, my mind enlightened, and my heart softened by their testimony and strong Spiritual power.

Today marks the end of a project where I finally went through every hymn in the book and writing down my favorite line out of each song. A great compilation where scripture and poetry combine to make the best hymnal in the world.

I know this is a hymn book, but I love the songs and the inspiration they give me. Even if you can't sing (like me) I recommend reading through the hymn book and buying the hyms on CD.

Keep one close at all times, and memorize them. Scriptural text is important to memorize, and the hymns are additionally fairly easy to memorize, and invaluable in overcoming evil.

I learn everytime I sing or read through the words in each hymn. It helps me to better understand doctrine in a pure way and of course keeps us all happier here at home when we sing these.
