When Alex turned off the interstate to find a gas station, he never expected to end up in a town where the cows outnumbered the people. But when it turns out that their station ran out of gas the day before, and the phones don't work anywhere in or around the town, things start to get a little strange. What does this happy little town hide?
Hello! My name is J. C. Cauthon, and I write books for other writers such as myself. I publish a writing prompt collection every other month on Amazon, share writer resources through my blog and newsletter monthly, and much more.
You can find me most places on the web, but I tend to stick to only a few social websites. If you want to see the inspiration behind my projects, you can check out my Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/cauthonj
Instagram and Facebook are also two great places to catch up me. I try to update these daily with at least a writing prompt, but the more time I spend off the computer, the more I get written.
If you want to see what I have recently published, some reviews of my books, or what I am reading, you can visit my author page on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/J-C-Cauthon/e/...
A cracking little tale, one that has been told similarly before, not least in the classic film of the same name (and a bit of Psycho too!), offering it's own take on the lost in an alien land urban myth with a tremendously paced short story that gathers towards a chilling climax. Lone driver Alex is caught out on a deserted rural road (excellent monochrome cover choice too), no phone signal, low on gas and hungry - it's not looking good. But not to worry - there is a diner up ahead - they will be able to refuel both him and his car, and they should have a phone. They'll be able to give him directions too......
The author animates the old urban legend (in this case a rural legend) of a traveler running low on gas who find himself in the backcountry. I won't give it away except to say it's creepy. Even though it's a short story, there's plenty of suspense and fear as we follow the main character as he makes one mistake after another, the entire time I'm shouting . . . no, no don't do it, but he goes and does it anyway. It's a simple tale and this case well told.
