Celebrating the 40 year history of Studio Ghibli, the careers of its illustrators, animators, and art directors. Studio Ghibli Dream Artists is a breathtakingly in depth, behind-the-scenes exploration into the lore, art and creative processes of Studio Ghibli— which I absolutely adored!
Including tributes to the works of less well known artists such as Yasuo Ôtsuka (and colour designer Michiyo Yasuda) whose aesthetics and work (along with behind the scenes figure Toshio Suzuki) helped shape that iconic Ghibli-style we’ve all come to know and love.
And with gorgeous colour images from projects Ghibli founders Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata worked on before the Studio took shape, to well into its heyday, it’s later collaborative projects and even an in depth exploration of the newest release for the studio, The Boy and The Heron (2023), Ghibli aficionados have plenty to drool over!
There’s even a small section of interviews with illustrators who talk about their day-to-day schedules, work output and experience working for the studio which I found incredibly interesting.
The tidbits about how storytelling, character designs, movements and themes all came together to create each movie were really insightful too! Particularly when it came to all the behind the scenes stuff and the struggles the studio faced in the early years.
As a bit of a history and art nerd, it was just a really fascinating read overall— and gave me soo much more appreciation for the craft and creativity that brought all my faves to life.
Honestly, I could probably write a dozen essays on how much I loved this, but the real enjoyment is experiencing it for yourselves.
Fellow Ghibli fans, you definitely need to add this to your collections ASAP. And I promise, you won’t be disappointed!
Also, a huge thank you to Rachel Quin & Insight Editions for this stunning copy.
This is a good read for fans of Studio Ghibli. It is well produced with glossy pages and a lot of illustrations. I found the writing a bit uneven (it is made up of tributes from a number of different writers). It covers the careers of the studio founders and history of the studio. After the introduction I found it a bit repetitive in places. The writing style improved when the most recent films were covered. I also enjoyed reading about the music, the museum and other Ghibli attractions that can be visited. You will want to book a holiday in Japan after reading that section! I bought this book as a gift, and know that it will be very well received.
