Callan MacKenzie is all sharp wit, devilish grins, and adrenaline-fueled risk. But when he discovers the truth about Bree's last relationship, he becomes her unexpected anchor across the ocean.

Long-distance is one thing-surviving a life-threatening accident is another. When Callan's reckless streak lands him in the hospital, Bree drops everything to be by his side. For her, it means facing down fear. For him, it's realizing he's found the one thing worth slowing down for.

Healing takes courage. Giving your heart to someone takes nerve. And sometimes, love is the wildest ride of all.

ARC review - Where the River Runs Wild
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️🌶️

Bree and Callan are pure perfection. Both stubborn, feisty, impulsive, and always ready for a challenge. Watching their relationship grow and flourish was completely heartwarming.

Callan, our impulsive and flirtatious blond Scottish MMC, has always kept to himself… until Bree. He’s instantly captivated by her sunshine and spark, and he quietly vows to protect the heart she’s always given so freely to everyone else.

Bree is sunshine and beauty with a bite. The caretaker who’s always held the world together for others. Through this story, she learns she doesn’t have to carry her trauma alone. She learns to trust again. To lean on someone who sees all of her. And Callan becomes that safe place.

Their love story is one of trust, friendship, healing, and growth. Through accidents, fear, and emotional upheaval, they learn that neither of them has to face life alone — especially with the help of family… and Bree’s loyal German Shepherd, Nugget.

As book two in the series, we get even more Knox and Juliette, more Aunt Rose, more Scottish charm, and that signature epic banter this series is known for.

This story of Bree and Callan will have you giddy over their banter then tugging at your heartstrings.

Bree’s journey of healing from her last relationship and dealing with panic attacks was written very well and relatable with the honesty of the events.

Callan is a risk taker that learns the hard way sometimes adrenaline can be found in love and not chasing the next adventure.

These two were perfect for each other. I loved how they slowly built their relationship through a friendship first over texts, memes and phone calls while long distance.

We cannot forgot love to Nugget who shows Callan that dogs are a man’s best friend!

ARC Review, thank you to House of Hearts Lit for the e-arc!

Who doesn’t want a handsome Scottish man who’s a little bit reckless? Sign me up, I’m first in line. Bree was overworked and overwhelmed and on a trip to Scotland Callan enters and the rest is history. A little bit of insta-lust, but it definitely worked in this situation, and we got my all time favorite trope, “who did this to you”, swoon. Bree had a lot of emotional trauma to deal with and Callan was always right there for her. I really enjoyed this, it was such a sweet read.

This was my first Alexandra Ayres book and I absolutely fell in love with Bree and Callan! Bree is newly out of an abusive relationship when her friendship with Callan begins. I love how Bree and Callan truly became great friends before they took their relationship to the next level. They have hilarious banter and it was obvious how deeply they cared for each other. Callan was so patient and supportive of Bree as she learns to cope and heal from her previous relationship and trauma. Seeing Bree rediscover her voice was truly remarkable and I loved how Alexandra portrays her strength and resilience. These two have unbelievably chemistry, unhinged banter, and demonstrate a healthy supportive relationship. I absolutely devoured this story and cannot wait to see where Alexandra takes this family next. Where the River Runs Wild is now available on KU!

This book was insta-love for me…in that I instantly fell in love with Callan. Having not read the first book (I received this one as an ARC), initially the immediate connection between Callan and Bree felt rushed, but it was actually paced beautifully in the way their connection grew and bloomed. I loved this story and will definitely be going back to read the first one!

“You’re something else.” He smirks. “Have I mentioned that I’d like to keep you around? Because if I haven’t, I definitely would.”

“It’s the way he makes me feel like I could completely fall apart, and he’d be there, hands out and ready to catch every piece without a second thought.”

If you are looking for a slow-burning friends-to-lovers with great banter, this is the one for you!

Wow…I couldn’t put this book down. I absolutely LOVED this book, a true 5-star read for me. I love the relationship between the main characters and how what is meant to be will always find a way. When you find the one meant for you, it's like finding a missing puzzle piece you didn't know was missing.

Bree (FMC), a nurse from Kentucky, has been getting by and barely surviving in an unhealthy relationship that turned from love to a dangerous situation with someone who is now like a stranger. She worries about others and hides her pain, and most are fooled by her except Callan (MMC), who runs his family whiskey business in Scotland with his brother, who is married to Bree's best friend. Callan can see the pain in Bree and knows she is hiding something. He is a protector and wants to make sure she is safe, and she needs someone to look out for her; she has been doing it on her own for too long. The relationship between the main characters was a slow burn, developing over a year marked by numerous trips, text messages, and phone calls to fill the many miles that separated them. The way the relationship is built on friendship and banter makes the moment when things change even better when they fall, and they fall hard.

ARC review Book 2 in the Windswept series. I have not read book 1.
Antecdotal thoughts while reading
Open door romance
Witnessing the accident changed Dillon, and not in a good way. Bree is having to put on a 'It's fine! It's fine! Everything's fine!" face. So exhausting!! Seeking counseling/therapy needs to be normalized, especially in high-stress community helper jobs.
Oh sh** Dillon....what have you done to Bree!?!
Callan, are you going to help Bree?
Very perceptive Callan, keep that alertness up
Bree is Callan's backpack. Hope she has a blast!
Will Bree open up to Lucy??
Callan, you are a steady presence.
Congrats Juliette and Knox!
What's under/ not under that kilt??
Be the anchor Callan. Bree needs that.
I appreciate a man secure enough with himself to be patient, to be what the other person needs first.
A ghost tour sounds like it could stir up some things.
Bree, can you quit the hospital? They sound like a piece of work.
You didn't say the words Callan, but your actions should have.
That better not be Callan in the ER/hospital in trouble!
Oh sh*t Bree! You just passed out and hit the floor.
Dillon, be on your best behavior. I have a bad feeling about this!
** 2 more hours of read time left to finish the book... but I am so tired. Sleep is calling my name even though I REALLY want to keep reading!
Oh wow, tears within 30 minutes of waking up is not how I week do my best teaching kiddos today!
“Do you know how hard it is not to slap you upside the head? It’s like trying to hold back a sneeze in a room full of pepper. Near bloody impossible.” 🤣🤣
..."Nugget misses you. If I don’t get him to you soon, he’s gonna stage a rebellion.” 😂
Callan, be the protector Bree needs through all her things.
All the feels in this book!!

Thank you to Alexandra Ayres and House of Hearts Lit for the opportunity to read and review this ARC!

This was a really heartfelt and beautiful journey. If you enjoy tropes like best friend’s brother-in-law, opposites attract, banter-heavy romance, found family vibes, along with healing and second chances, then you absolutely need to take a chance on this book. Where The River Runs Wild is the second book in the Windswept series, but can be read as a standalone (which I unknowingly did, yet again). However, based on some little nuggets of information I gathered through this story, and how much I enjoyed it, I will be going back to read the first one for sure. Also, can I just say that there is something incredibly romantic about Scotland. This is not the first romance I’ve read where the MMC is Scottish, or that takes place in Scotland, and I am finding that I really enjoy them, and they tend to just have this really deep romance aspect to them.

The FMC, Bree, was super fun and feisty, and I felt like she was a very relatable character. The MMC, Callan, proved to be a protector type who took one look at Bree and knew he would risk it all. Through this story, our characters face several emotional challenges that really foster growth in them, allowing them to learn to trust and lean on each other for support. Additionally, there is some really fun banter between the characters, and that is one of my favorite things in a romance novel. Overall, this was a touching novel, and I will be looking for more in this series.

✨ Thank you to Alexandra Ayres & her team for an ARC of the book in exchange for an honest review!

GUYS. Move over Knox, your brother Callan is here! SWOON WORTHY friends to lovers banter, adrenaline-focused Callan and heartbroken Bree form a friendship that turns into a steamy, yet passionate, love.

While I loved Juliette’s second chance at love with Knox, Bree’s second chance at love with Callan seemed to be more meaningful. Callan is the type of man that, “if he wanted to, he would.”

This book was definitely spicier than the first book, I’d give it a 3.5/5 🌶️🌶️🌶️. What I loved most about Callan is he always focused on Bree’s needs first. He never wanted to shelter her, or make decisions for her; he always wanted her to do things at her own pace, and gave her the space to do so.

Bree’s growth in the story is beautiful to read. She suffers a trauma from a relationship she had assumed was forever, and Callan helps her not only fall in love with him, but love herself again too. While not every romance is rainbows and butterflies (this one is motorcycles and “beastie” dogs) this story really honed in on fighting for what you want, regardless of what rivers, distance, or trauma comes by. I could read their love story over and over.

If you are a second chance at love fan, friends x lovers trope fan, or just love to read about love, this book is for you. The story of Bree deserves to be known, and loved. We all need to find the strength of Bree, with the support of a man like Callan.

Plus, who wouldn’t swoon over being called Sunshine or Lass as a term of endearment!? ♥️

“You’re something else, Sunshine. I think I’ll keep you.”

Where the River Runs Wild picks up right where the last book left off. We knew something was going on with Juliette’s best friend, Bree, but we didn’t quite know what. Her long-term relationship with Dillion—the one Juliette always saw as the model of a healthy partnership—has quietly taken a painful turn. As Bree faces the hurt of her past and begins forming a tentative friendship with Callan MacKenzie, the one person who truly sees her in the mess she can’t bring herself to share with her best friend, deeper feelings start to grow. And Callan…the man is such a green flag.

I loved the emotional messiness, the layers, and the way this story shows what a truly healthy partnership can look like. Alexandra wrote such a tender, vulnerable book, and I found myself relating to Bree’s experience through similar patterns I’ve seen in my own parent. I highly recommend checking content warnings before diving in, as this one could be triggering for readers with histories involving domestic abuse/violence, mental illness, or alcoholism.

Alexandra did it again!

I absolutely LOVED this book! It pickups right where "When the Wind is Right" ends, and is another homerun! Once again, just the loveliest writing - gorgeous imagery, witty banter, and fantastic character growth!

Bree has been drowning in an unhealthy relationship, and an unexpected friendship with Callan helps her heal and find new internal strength. Callan has been running from fruitless dating and commitment issues, and an unexpected friendship with Bree helps him find his way to solid ground.

This is a masterclass in friends-to-lovers! The mutual affirmation, their shared wildness, their adventurous spirits, their vulnerability all lead them to exploring what could happen if they trust each other. I ADORED all of the ways Callan saw and cared for Bree. His tenderness and considerate decisions were beautiful.

"He's laughter on rainy mornings and whispered promises under starlight. He's the feeling of coming home when I never knew what I lost."

"The few times I've been with her, I haven't craved the chaos ... I care about her. I want to be her safe place. I find myself simply wanting more of her."

This is a must read!

Where the River Runs Wild took me by surprise in the best way. This story is emotional, tender, and so much deeper than I expected. Bree’s strength really shines. The courage it takes to walk away from a harmful relationship, even when you still care, is enormous. Watching her slowly rediscover herself and step into something healthy and safe felt so meaningful.

Callan is wild in all the right ways. He is charming, full of life, and somehow exactly what Bree needs. He’s reckless at times, but his heart is so steady when it matters. Together, they feel like two people who are truly meant to find each other.

Alexandra Ayres does an incredible job showing the impact of relationships that break you down… and the strength it takes to rebuild. The community surrounding Bree is beautiful too; supportive, warm, and exactly what she deserves.

This book does touch on abusive relationships and PTSD, so definitely check trigger warnings, but overall it’s an emotional, powerful, and hopeful story about healing, courage, and choosing a love that lifts you up.

I loved so many parts of this story, but the one that hit me the hardest was Bree’s journey of breaking free from a toxic relationship. As someone who personally relates to that struggle, her growth and strength meant so much to me ❤️
Callen is exactly the wild card you expect at first, but watching his softer, more tender side come out for Bree was pure magic. The way he shows up for her, supports her, and protects her heart completely stole mine. And yes… the motorcycle definitely added extra swoon points 😅🏍️
What I truly appreciated most was how their relationship didn’t feel rushed. The feelings were strong and immediate, but they allowed the connection to grow naturally, making their love story feel real, emotional, and deeply satisfying. Watching Bree learn to trust again and Callen stand by her side every step of the way was beautiful.
This book is emotional, romantic, and healing in the best way. If you love slow-burn romance, supportive book boyfriends, and stories about finding yourself again after heartbreak, you absolutely need to read this one ❤️

Bree has been going through it, she makes the decision to end a relationship that was doing her more harm than good. She’s been hurt so she won’t look back.
When Callan sees the light in Bree’s eye dim he knows he has to do something to cheer her up.
A broken soul and a soul that could brighten the world form a bond. Callan has never felt the way he does for Bree, friend or more he knows that she is someone to him someone important. Bree fears that what she feels might be too much for Callans easy going personality. They try to make it work but being apart can cause a strain and pain like no other.

Love how the beginning got me hooked right away, through the middle of the story it did start to get a bit slow but then picked right back up again. Callan was such a fun character to read. Bree is a relatable character, one that doesn’t want to burden others with her feelings. We see a relationship that started as flirty friendship grow into something more.

Where the River Runs Wild is a gritty and emotional love story about overcoming personal struggles together. Bree has left her long-term boyfriend after he changes for the worse and opens up to Callan while visiting her best friend in Scotland. Callan has always been the wild, impulsive one in his family but wants to be there for Bree. The two stay in touch while Bree goes home, and start to want more.

I loved Bree and Callan’s romance so much!! Bree overcame so much throughout the book, and Callan was always there for her. One of Bree’s fears was that Callan would only want casual, but he quickly proves to her he’s in it for the long haul. They have a flirty and sincere dynamic that was so sweet!

The two are able to heal each other, both physically and emotionally, throughout the book with the help of their friends and family as well. I haven’t read the prior book but will 100% go back to read Knox and Juliette’s story!

With beautiful views, hotties with the most exquisite accent and a cozy feeling of family this book transports you to the mystical Scotland.

I swear to God that reading this I can almost listen Callan’s accent in my mind, seriously I was just drooling all over the screen haha but tbh this man has such a rich duality… he’s nonchalant, funny and reckless but also he’s so gentle, patient and thoughtful.

Bree and Callan hit it off immediately, she’s the steadiness and calm that he needs to recharge and he’s the air and gentleness that she’s missing after loosing herself trying to save other people. These two literally are the perfect balance, I loved how they connected to each other, it was slow but so powerful that was inevitable, even when all the odds were against them.

Their story was heartwarming, full of emotions, yearning and so much sweetness and cuteness. I can only describe it as beautiful to read.

Where the River Runs Wild is your typical love story with a spicy twist… right up until the accident flips everything on its head.

Bree heads to Scotland to get her life together, mind her business, and definitely not fall for her best friend’s future brother-in-law. She’s anxious but tougher than she thinks, just trying to move on from a rough past.

Callan shows up with his reckless charm, sharp tongue, and that “I see more than you want me to” energy. The second he notices her bruises, he goes straight into protect mode and honestly I didn’t blame her one bit for catching feelings.

Everything moves the way you’d expect in a slow-burn-but-also-not kind of way… until the accident hits. That’s when the whole vibe changes. Bree has to figure out if she’s ready to trust someone again, and Callan has to decide if he’s finally ready to stop running.

Where the River Runs Wild is a beautiful slower burn romance by Alexandra Ayres. It is the second book in the Windswept series and I haven't read the first book-yet. I fully intend to after finishing Callan and Bree's story.

After reconnecting at Knox and Juliette's engagement party, Callan and Bree begin a long distance friendship. They text, talk, and facetime between the engagement party and the eventual wedding. When they meet back up for Knox and Juliette's wedding, the connection is undeniable. They have to decide how hard they are willing to work to keep the relationship in place.

I love a book with minimal to zero other woman/man drama. I wish we got more of the building of he friendship/relationship tension between the engagement and wedding. There were little bits, but more would have just helped build their story even more.

Overall it was a sweet love story and I plan to go back and read Know and Juliette's story.

Bree and Callan are pure perfection. Both stubborn, feisty, and throwing sparks like it’s their full-time job. Their banter? Elite. Their chemistry? Off the charts. This story will have you devouring their back-and-forth one minute and clutching your chest the next.

Their love story is the perfect mix of trust, friendship, healing, and growth. And honestly? The way they built their relationship through late-night texts, unhinged memes, and phone calls before taking the real plunge… chef’s kiss. It made everything feel intentional, earned, and swoon-worthy.

From chaotic mishaps and emotional roller coasters to the unwavering support of family and yes, the real MVP, Nugget the German Shepherd, who shows Callan exactly why dogs are men’s best friends, these two learn they don’t have to face a single thing alone.

A beautifully written romance with heart, humor, and all the feels. Bree and Callan were absolutely meant for each other.

this was an easy 5 star read!!! once again, i must move to Scotland and find me a MacKenzie man because my goodness *swoon*

in the where the river runs wild, we are following Bri as she is getting out of an abusive relationship. She travels to Scotland for her best friend Juliette’s surprise engagement party and spends time with Callan, Juliette’s future brother-in-law. Callan and Bri start a long distance friendship that eventually turns into more.

I absolutely loved this book so much!! Callan and Bri were everything to me. The way that he took care of her, catered to all her needs and helped her to feel safe after everything she went through was just so heartwarming to read. I loved the sweetness and playfulness of their relationship. I loved the Scottish setting and the other characters so much! I also loved that this doesn’t have a third act breakup!!!

I absolutely loved Where the River Runs Wild! Bree and Callan’s banter is so natural, funny, and full of spark, it felt completely genuine and kept me smiling throughout. The plot was easy to follow, relatable, and heartwarming, with the kind of emotional depth that makes you root for the characters every step of the way.

Callan, the hasty and flirtatious Scottish hero, instantly fell for Bree’s sunny, vibrant personality, and I loved how he quietly committed to protecting her heart while letting their relationship grow organically. Bree’s journey of learning to breathe again and trusting someone with her heart was beautifully portrayed, and watching their connection deepen, first through texts, memes, and phone calls while they were long-distance apart, was completely satisfying.

Both Bree and Callan are stubborn, feisty, and impulsive in all the right ways, and their chemistry is off the charts. The story strikes a perfect balance of humor, heart, and emotional stakes, making this a thoroughly enjoyable and heartfelt read.

First things first....who doesn’t love a handsome Scotsman? This book had me from page one. It’s an absolutely beautifully written, emotional story that pulled me right in.

The chemistry between Bree and Callan is undeniable, but it’s their emotional connection that hit me right in the feels.Their banter? Perfection. And the spice? Just the icing on an already delicious cake.

This story gets heavy in parts, but every moment is worth it. It’s one of the most rewarding, heartfelt romances I’ve read in a long time, and I adored watching these two navigate healing, fear, and the wild ride that is falling in love.

This is contemporary romance at its finest; heartfelt, intimate, and deeply human—and it’s exactly why I love this genre: it reminds me that love, healing, and connection can feel both breathtakingly real and beautifully hopeful.

Falling in love, that’s what reading this book felt like! Truly Where the River Runs Wild is an absolutely amazing read, from page one you will be falling for and rooting for these characters! Bree is a loving ball of sunshine who is always ready to jump in and help, defend or care for those she loves, sometimes to her own detriment and honestly she was just so absolutely relatable. And Callan is just the most amazing book boyfriend, he was sweet, caring, a smidge on the reckless side but with a heart of gold and a love for Bree that isn’t to be missed! And obviously the Scottish background is stunning! If you’re looking for a sweet, friends to lovers, opposites attract romance, full of banter, so many swoon-worthy moments, spice, just enough drama to keep you on your toes, and a beautiful happily ever after then I highly recommend grabbing a copy of Where the River Runs Wild to add to your TBR!

This is the second book I’ve read by this author, and I can confidently say she’s quickly becoming my comfort author. You just know you’re going to love anything she writes.

Her writing style is so effortlessly smooth, and her stories are genuinely that good—they make for such addictive reading. This book follows Bree and Callan, and let me tell you, the chemistry between them is off the charts. You can practically feel it radiating off the page.

And listen… there is no third-act breakup. But something did break—and it was my heart. I cried. I know, shocker! I honestly think anyone who has truly met the love of their life will shed at least one tear while reading this. The anxiety and panic attack representation was incredibly well written, and I felt so seen.

Now begins the wait for the next book!

Where the River Runs Wild gives readers a moving look at two people finding comfort and strength in each other. Bree is rebuilding her life after leaving a relationship that only caused her pain. She is determined to move forward, even if it means carrying her hurt quietly.

Callan sees her struggling and refuses to let her fade into the background. His natural warmth and steady presence create a safe space for her to breathe again. What begins as lighthearted friendship gradually becomes something far more meaningful, and their connection feels genuine and earned.

Bree’s vulnerability makes her easy to root for, and Callan’s fun, supportive energy brings balance to her guarded heart. Their journey through distance, uncertainty, and growing affection creates a story that feels honest from beginning to end.

Is there anyone who doesn’t enjoy reading about a hot Scottish man? Callan is a bit reckless with eyes only for Bree. Bree is a nurse who tends to go through her troubles alone without reaching for help. While reading this I along with some other reviewers thought it was a little rushed but once I kept reading I realized that was not the case. Reading about their love blossoming was very heartwarming. This story was very relatable which to me was a nice surprise. Most books are great reads but are hard to relate to real life especially when it comes to Scottish men and American women. This novel made their relationship, extremely easily to associate with.

This is the second book in the series and I have not read the first but you betcha I’m gonna go and read that one now.

I voluntarily read this book that was generously provided to me as an ARC copy all reviews are my own and honest.

That prologue though!!! I was hooked from the get go! Ensure you read the trigger warning as there’s some emotional abuse, PTSD and substance use disorder.

The banter between the MMC and the FMC is wonderful and imagining the stunning landscapes of Scotland *chefs kiss! It appears as though the lighthearted, handsome Scot Callum is exactly what Bree needs to help her out through her fight or flight life experience.

As mentioned this books touches on heavy topics such as mental health, alcoholism, but it also focuses on the support needed to go through it all. What I loved most about this book was how the calming presence of one can help guide another through the darkness - knowing they’re not alone and finally realizing that asking for help doesn’t make you weak. That in fact, asking for help is strength.

Thanks to Alexandra Ayres and House of Hearts for the gifted copy — all opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed Where the River Runs Wild! It was so refreshing to see Bree in a different light compared to Where the Wind is Right. Her dynamic with Callan felt real and messy in the best way, their flaws made them human, and their opposite strengths balanced each other beautifully.

I wasn’t prepared for the accident storyline, and because of my own recent loss, that part hit me hard. It was tough to get through, but it also made the book feel incredibly authentic.

On the lighter side, Bree and Callan’s banter was hilarious. Their back-and-forth joking had me laughing out loud more than once, which was such a nice counterbalance to the heavier moments.

Overall, this book gave me both tears and laughter, and I loved every bit of the ride.
