His dragon is gone. His power, fractured. But the world still needs the Nightshade.
Callen once wielded the raw power of a dragon, a connection that saved his people—but cost him everything. Now, haunted by echoes of what he lost, he struggles to rekindle the bond that made him more than human.
But the world won’t wait.
A mysterious Pyrin delegation arrives with whispers of rising rebellion, ancient dragon fragments, and a past Callen thought buried. Among them is Nessa—an ally from a life he tried to forget, carrying secrets that could restore his power… or doom them all.
As the Lord Regent’s forces close in and long-lost magic stirs beneath the mountains, Callen must reclaim the dangerous legacy of the Dragon Singer, or watch the world burn from the shadows.
Perfect for fans of Brent Weeks, Robin Hobb, and Michael J. Sullivan, Within the Drift delivers epic fantasy with heart, political tension, and a hero caught between who he was and who he must become.
Feels like it's written by A1 half the time. The same grand realisation our purpose gets repeated every 2 pages for no reason. The lore of the world seems to be made up on the fly half the time, it keeps overwriting what was in the previous books. The writer contradicts his own world building. For example: At one point the characters reach a temple and it's described as being formed by a dragon willingly having transformed it's own body. But later the book praises it's architecture and carvings, decorations - So is the building the body of a dragon or something built by humans? The age of the building also keeps changing between scenes - between 800 years and thousands. This book kills your brain cells.
There are several sirustional inconsistencies, mostly, towards the end of the book. For example, from one chapter to the next the protagonist loses his anchor and is struggling the the next chapter he suddenly has it again and it is causing the same problems before it shattered. Another is the daughter is struggling with her power and then all of a sudden she is completely fine with no intervention explained. There are also a few spots where paragraphs are rewritten word for word. Beyond these annoyances the story itself is enjoyable and there is excellent world building.
Incredible! Two very talented authors come together and take us on dangerous adventures with characters that seem to come to life. I am excited to read book 4:)
Totally enjoyed it! This is a well written and has well developed characters. The story is catching and with the strong characters makes for a very enjoyable read. Great Reading Everyone!
Good characters development, screaming plots, great action, good capture human emotions. Holds true to the family as normative, and it's defense as primary.
