The antique shop along the shore of Lake Michigan had always been a source of pride and comfort for Audrey, but lately she can’t shake the feeling that something was wrong or about to change.Audrey had been raised in foster homes and had learned to take care of herself at an early age. She was now a strong and independent young woman, but was that enough? She was beginning to feel that there was something lacking in her life. She should be happy; she had a fantastic business, wonderful friends, and made a comfortable living. No one could ask for more. Life in the small town of Fox Hill was relaxing and slow-paced, so what was wrong? Audrey was about to learn that she had to pay more attention to her woman’s intuition. Someone or something was trying to warn her. Her nerves were frazzled and oftentimes the hairs on her arms stood up as if trying to alert her. Was it to something sinister? Should she be looking out for trouble, or will there be an exciting change coming her way? After discovering some interesting antiques, she feels compelled to dig through old records to search for answers, but will those answers solve her questions or someone else’s?
Jane O'Brien discovered her love of writing at the age of ten when she wrote her first ten-chapter book in pencil on notebook paper. She passed it around to all of her friends at school and told them she wanted to be an author. And that planted the seed. O'Brien's career life has been varied. She was a piano teacher for over 50 years, a librarian, and a professional proofreader. She is also interested in genealogy, having worked on her own family tree, as well as her husband's, for over 40 years, which helps to color most of her novels. Today, as a grandmother, Jane is finally fulfilling her lifelong dream, after successfully having her thirty-fifth book published, which includes two trilogies, one six-book series, three Christmas novellas, and two Amazon best-selling time slip series. She lives in West Michigan and writes romance with a little history, mystery, and family entanglements, all set in her part of the state. The stories she weaves are about family and the intricate connections of relatives, past and present.
I was surprised at how good this book turned out to be. Audrey is presented with a box of recently purchased antiques by her picker, Gracie. In the box she discovers lace collars, doilies and an autograph book among other things. She feels a strange connection to the book and sets out to discover any information about the original owner. The history she uncovers turns out to be very personal.
As Audrey ran her antique store she came upon some very valuable things. She dug into genealogy and found a relative that may be related to someone for the antiques. Being raised in foster homes with no true family she found she is related to the antique owner.
Reading a book by Author Jane O’Brien is like spending time with a good friend that you can count on. You know you are in for a calm, warm, understanding time together. Jane O’Brien writes with a lyrical and pleasant voice.
The main reason I am drawn to this trilogy is because of the characters. In this, the second book of the series, we meet Audrey Doanes, age 39. “Audrey turned the key to the door of her shop, the same as she did every morning. Audrey was usually positive and happy all the time. She had carefully created the image of being a lady over the years.”
Audrey is a mature and composed individual even though we learn that she had a rough start in life. Now that she owns her own shop, Audrey has a stable life with an interesting career to fulfill her, but she longs for more. Will her dream of having a family to love and having someone love her come true? Readers, you will enjoy seeing how Audrey’s past, present and future come together through the world of antiques. I also loved the name of the book and the store!
Another reason why I love Author O’Brien’s books is because she writes lovingly of the state of Michigan. We are given beautiful scenes of western Michigan, descriptions that resonate with the mood of the story. I enjoyed reading about the lighthouses, the freighters, and the summer beaches. “Each and every time Audrey watched the sun set over Lake Michigan, she was filled with awe.”
Author O’Brien is a charming writer and her books remain in my heart even after I have finished them. I highly recommend this book and I am grateful that there is a third book in the series.
A cute story about a throw away child and how her life evolved to be a success and find the love of a cop that knew her long ago. The book is written in a very simple format with lots of description and details. But the author always has many twist, turn of events, and surprises. That makes the book an enjoyable read.
The book was okay, definitely not one of my favorites from this author. I think my expectations were set high. I was expecting Audrey to travel through time due to the antiques theme and the author’s other books. So I kept waiting and expecting something out of the ordinary to happen and it never did. It was a good story.
This book frequently read like a travel guide to Michigan. I like Michigan, I've been there many times, but I didn't want to read a travel guide. It didn't seem as well written as the first book, so it was disappointing to me.
I found the first part of the book ok for light reading although a little slow but I love the way the author linked book 1 and 2. I became quite teary reading the second half. Great story line.
