www.ian-d-jackson.com I was born in Liverpool in 1964 and have been in magazines and publishing since 1989 and I am an accomplished feature writer.
My debut novel "Dead Charming" is set in Manchester and stems from my keen interest in psychology and crime. I want to analyse the experiences of both perpetrator and victim through their emotional and psychological turmoil with often terrifying results. My thoughts This is another new author that was recommended to me. I'm so glad that I looked into this story. It was a fast paced thriller that kept me hooked from start to finish. Joe Reed was a very complex character. But is he the real culprit or is someone else pulling those strings? I think the twists and turns made this story a suspenseful, exciting tale and kept me in anticipation right till the end..
The story starts of with Tony and his wife Emma that got married after being childhood sweethearts. They were destined to be together until Joe Reed charmed his way into their lives. Joe Reed was the new guy working at the company along side Tony. Joe seemed to be funny and very good at his job with being the soul life of any party. Joe the newcomer and Tony became such good friends that Tony took Joe home to meet his wife. But Joe is not the funny guy, he turned out to be a unlimate predator, fuelled by a leathal cocktail of icy hatered and frenzied lust. Dead charming is full of crime and evil that will cut through the heart of every reader. Review by ireadnovels.wordpress.com
This was a dark thriller that actually THRILLED me.I love to relax with a good thriller, but at times throughout this book my pulse was racing. I also love to read during my down time, say before bed, but I found myself reading DEAD CHARMING on my iPhone Kindle everywhere. I couldn't put it down. The story seemed to start off in a kinder gentler tone as the narrator clues us in to some crimes, but the twists and turns that happen as we get into the book left me dreaming of how the book would end only to be completely caught off guard by the climax and then totally shocked at the ending.
This is the debut novel by English author Ian Jackson, and it’s a cracker of a contemporary psychological thriller. If you’re a squeamish reader I give you warning now: there are some disturbing scenes that you may want to skim. You won’t lose the plot by doing so. Set in Manchester UK it tells the story of newly-qualified criminal profiler Jenny Foster as she starts work with the Manchester Metropolitan Police Serious Crime Squad and is dropped in the deep end of a serial killer case on her first day. Among other things it’s a story of degradation, torture, manipulation and deception. Told from multiple points of view—the victims, the killer, Jenny—it takes you intimately into their lives and their minds. The story is well told and doesn’t lose its way at any point. Jackson keeps the anticipation mounting as the police close in on their quarry and Jenny has to contend with problems at home while hoping her observations about the killer are accurate. And then there’s the ending! I’m not going to spoil it by saying anything about it. If you like taut psychological thrillers you might want to give this one a go.
I will admit that after reading the first portion I had to put it down because it so was brutal and raw. I was upset and I thought if the whole novel is like this I will not be able to read it.
Gratefully it wasn't, don't get me wrong there was a great deal of violence but it was also a great crime thriller.
We met Jenny Foster, a young mother and profiler who takes a job with the local police force (in England). On her first day on the job she is immediately thrown into a murder case that turns into serial killings. Her personal life is far from perfect and the reader is rooting for her at every turn. There's a lot more but I don't want to give any spoilers.
It's a well crafted psychological thriller that had me guessing until the very end ... and what an ending.
A story of betrayals, ambition, deceit and a study into the working of the human mind.
Love it - going to pick up another one by the author.
A well written, easy flowing book that had me captivated from the start. Excellent suspense with pure thriller trademarks and I was instantly transported into the book, hooked by the fine detailing of the characters and the storyline. It also kept me on my toes with plenty of twisting plots, which at times were harrowing to read but mostly because it's so well written and intense. The ending is unexpected and I felt lost lost as to what happens next. I hope there's a follow on book and I will be looking out for this author in the future. Well done. x
What a cracking story. Near the start you realise that the nice guy is far from it. Some really graphic and stomach churning passages, but in the context of this dark story not at all out of place.
It felt real and the twists and turns at the end were largely unexpected and still leaves me cold to think that although a novel events like this have some footing in reality, there are some horrid people around.
I understand this to be the author's first novel, I hope not the last. A great read and I'm sorry the book ended.
A great debut novel, very enjoyable and well thought out. I say enjoyable - the book is full of all sorts of horrible, from the twisted serial killer living in squalor to broken families. But the story flows well and there is plenty to keep the reader interested. The ending had a couple of unexpected turns which finished the book off really well... though that last line warrants another story all of its own! I'm looking forward to reading Mr Jackson's second novel.
Very graphic beginning but worth sticking with it as it is a fantastic psychological read. Follows a newly qualified criminal profiler working with the police to find the person who is abducting and killing women in Manchester while dealing with turmoil in her personal life at the same time - won't add anymore as don't want to spoil it for anyone. Highly recommended.
"Intense" doesn´t even start to cover it. Two days after finishing it, the story and the characters still don´t leave my head. It´s a powerfull and penetrating plot, with potent and passionate characters that the author masterly leads towards and overwhelming outcome. Really ejoyed it!
Ian Jackson held my interest from page one. Complicated and unexpected at every turn this crime novel was unique. I didn't want to put it down till the end. I'm looking forward to more from this author.
Started off OK and was quite a page turner, but half way through the hunt for the killer just dragged on and on and nothing really happened. It just turned into boring police dialogue. Should have been cut down by a 1/4 to stop it from dragging.
I can't believe I've wasted my time on this book and was absolutely devastated by the ending!!! Why write such grim books at all? The content is upsetting enough to prompt at least a fairly happy ending. This book just makes me wanna throw it away and wash my hands afterwords. I hope I never come across anything like that again.
