The Armchair Detectives

They might be over the hill but they’re far from six feet under and now there’s a murder to solve!<

Meet Martin Maxwell. As a former government operative, at eighty-four-years young he always pictured a retirement sipping shaken-not-stirred martinis on a far-flung island. But in need of some care after a new hip, he finds himself at Twilight Lodge on the decidedly cloudy English coast.

From the outside, it’s a picture-perfect place to recuperate. But when popular resident Elsie dies unexpectedly, Martin suspects foul play. She’s the third death in less than two weeks and always had a clean bill of health. Armed with a walking stick and his trusty notebook and pen, Martin decides to investigate.

While nobody believes him – death is an inevitable part of care home life after all – Martin is convinced something sinister is afoot. With his wheelchair-bound sidekick and former nemesis Albie in tow, they begin questioning the residents. Soon they learn that there are several suspects in the frame.

When they discover Albie’s love interest Barbara is in the killer’s sights, Martin knows time is running out. Will Albie’s heart be broken forever, or can they battle the effects of old age and each other, outwitting a murderer before it’s too late?

An absolutely hilarious and heartwarming cozy mystery perfect for fans of Richard Osman, Robert Thorogood, Jesse Q. Sutanto and Only Murders in the Building.

This turned out to be a thoroughly entertaining cosy mystery featuring a very unreliable narrator. Or was he?

Martin is obliged to spend a month in a nursing home after hip surgery. He is surprised to find Albie there and claims to know him from their past days as spies. Albie refuses to acknowledge that this ever happened and this leads to lots of really humorous dialogue.

When three elderly residents die in a short space of time Martin is suspicious and manages to persuade Albie to help him investigate. Just to make things even more interesting Martin's daughter is in the police force and she is firmly of the opinion that it is all in his Alzheimer influenced imagination.

I am not sure I ever really established in my own mind whether Martin really had been a spy and it was apparent that he probably was in the early stages of Alzheimers. It all made for lots of confusion and a really fun book. I look forward to a possible follow up.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

The Armchair Detectives is a hysterical addition to the elderly-folks-investigating-a-crime genre. Martin is spending a month in a nursing home after getting a new hip. Eighty-four years old, he formerly worked for “the Company” as a spy. When the third resident dies in less than two weeks, Martin decides something suspicious is afoot. He loops in Albie, also a resident at Twilight Lodge and his supposed former nemesis to investigate the suspected murders.
Martin is no Elizabeth Best. He’s not sharp as a tack, in fact, he carries a notebook around to help his memory. And some of his suppositions had me in stitches. But in addition to the humor, there is also a poignancy to the story. Dunn handles certain aspects of the story with grace. I went back and forth about Martin’s actual mental state. But as if anyone living with someone with Alzheimer’s, it’s never a constant. Sharpness definitely comes and goes.
The writing is great and filled with a rich wit. At times, I wished I had the book in addition to the audio because I didn’t want to miss anything. There were lots of times I was literally chuckling out loud. This is billed as the first in the series and I will definitely be seeking out the next.
The audio was a great experience as John Hopkins was perfect as the narrator.
My thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture Audio for an advance copy of this audiobook.

One Liner: Fun!

Martin Maxwell (84), a former government operative, didn’t expect to find himself at Twilight Lodge on an English coast, recovering after a hip replacement surgery. While it appears to be a perfect place for the purpose, the death of Elsie, another resident, makes Martin suspicious, even if no one believes him.

With his former nemesis and wheelchair-bound sidekick, Albie, in tow, Martin decides to investigate the deaths. Turns out, the killer has set their sights on someone important to Martin! Can he save them and expose the criminal without putting his life at risk?

The story comes in Martin’s first-person POV.

My Thoughts:

This is the first book in a new cozy mystery series featuring an octogenarian as an amateur sleuth. Since this trope has been trending for a while now, I decided to give it a try.

Don’t let the chapter count scare you (almost 60), since they are short and fly by fast. We get right into the mystery with a dead body in the first chapter. Yeah, no wasting time here!

The first-person narration is funny, lighthearted, quirky, and (borderline) silly. There are a few heavy sentiments, but the overall vibe is light and easy, something you can read when you want to smile a little.

There’s also a bit of unreliable narrator, though not with the main mystery. This will be an overarching plot, so I’m curious to see where it will lead in the coming books. What is the truth? Who knows?

The mystery itself is pretty straightforward, though there are a few red herrings and easy twists. Given the characters’ ages and physical limitations, it’s not really action-based, but yes, they do manage to get into some awkward situations.

Of course, if as many deaths occurred even in a retirement center in such a short period, I would be more concerned than the MC’s daughter instead of brushing it away. A bit strange that she doesn’t feel something’s off for a long time despite being a constable.

The revelation is also a bit easy due to the age restrictions, but I don’t mind. It aligns with the narrative until that point.

We have a dog called Custard that mostly likes to sleep. And oh, there’s a bit of crushing and flirting too! ;)

To summarize, The Armchair Detectives is a breezy mystery with octogenarian sleuths, a few suspects, and some shenanigans that are bound to make you chuckle.

Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

4.5 Stars. Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this entertaining and enjoyable read. The plot takes place in a long-term nursing home for elderly patients. It involves murder mysteries and was suspenseful and hilarious. I found myself laughing out loud frequently. This book is scheduled for publication on October 01/2025.

Martin Maxwell (age 84) had led an exciting, thrill-packed life as a government operative (spy) in a highly top-secret agency. He travelled to many dangerous countries, telling everyone his career was that of a hotel inspector. He envisioned retiring to a tropical island, where he would bask in the sunshine. Instead, he is now temporarily confined to a long-term care home following a hip replacement. and enduring physiotherapy. Everyone, including his daughter, now a police officer, is unaware of his top-secret career as a spy.

His mental state is quite good, but he carries a notebook in which he writes down important things he might otherwise forget. Now, he lives among elderly patients, and suspects something sinister is going on. Within his first two weeks at the home, three people have died, which is beyond statistical probability. Soon, there is a fourth death. The people who died were said to have been in reasonably good health despite their advanced ages and their deaths were considered normal due to old age. Martin believes someone is killing them for an unknown reason.
He recruits another resident, Albie, to assist in his investigation. Albie was a fellow spy with whom he worked in Belize, Nicaragua, and other locations. Their working relationship ended badly. Following a stroke, Albie has forgotten this and is in a wheelchair. Is someone murdering the elderly residents, and what could be the reason? The sudden deaths are all considered to be age-related, and the only thing they had in common was that they involved guests in the most desirable, expensive rooms with a view of the British coastline.

The staff believe that Martin has signs of dementia. Those around him think he is confabulating his career as a government operative, imagining his life as a spy, and has developed false memories. Even his daughter, whom they asked to join in the investigation of the suspicious deaths, believes his mind is deteriorating, as he fails to remember he was a hotel inspector. She considers him deluded.

Martin pushes Albie in his wheelchair as they question staff members and other suspects. It is crucial that they solve the deaths quickly, as Martin has recovered enough to go home. Albie is trying to establish a romantic relationship with one of the female patients. She has one of the special rooms with a view, and they fear she may be the next to die.
Recommended for its clever combination of mystery and humour. I was pleased to learn that 'The Armchair Detectives' is the first book in a new series, and look forward to reading the next one.

A very enjoyable cozy mystery that I didn't want to put down. I laughed so much throughout this story, the banter between Martin and Albie was very entertaining. I listened to the audio book and the narrator was excellent. I really didn't want this adventure to end and I will be on the lookout for the next book in the series. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a light hearted mystery, especially if you like Pugs too!

I would give 6 stars if I could! The Armchair Detectives by Matt Dunn was one of the best cozy mysteries I have ever read (technically I listened to it on audiobook). The story reels you in instantly and you are swept into the world of Twilight Lodge, the retirement home our mystery takes place in. We spend all book following our characters through haphazard situations riddled with humor and eccentricity. The wit of the writing is on full display and you can’t help but smirk throughout. Not to give anything away, the age of the characters is almost a character of itself as that is a constant throughout the story. I was sad when the book ended and can’t wait for the next one! This book is so charming. If you like cozy mysteries, do your self a favor and read The Armchair Detectives!

I will say when I started the book, I was worried it was going to be too much like the Thursday Murder Club. Not at all! It is an independent story that stands up on its own. So if anyone else shares that worry, don’t, this is a fresh and unique story all on its own.

Also, a quick note on the narration quality. John Hopkins brought each and every character to life and elevated my experience of the story! Well done! I will now personally look for other books he narrates.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the advance review audiobook copy.

I would recommend if you like:

Cozy mysteries
Characters with quirks
Humor with your mysteries
Senior citizen main characters
A new cozy mystery series
To shut your brain off and just get lost in the story

I would caution you if:

Want your mysteries more complex
Want your mysteries a little more serious
Want a bloody or hi octane story line

Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for providing me with an ALC.

I love books that have MCs who are senior citizens. This book was definitely an entertaining read. Martin and Albie have such a great dynamic -- just what we need from a pair of old best friends. The writing was very smooth and even serious topics were treated in a jovial manner (not in an offensive way ofc). The mystery itself was nice but the ending felt a bit anticlimactic because there wasn't really much of a shock factor. They kind of figured it out probably midway through the book and things didn't really change after that except for some additional evidence and the final explanation. But, I definitely love the start of this series and I will continue reading any upcoming books when they're released. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a senior citizen solving crime and ofc for fans of the Thursday Murder Club and Vera Wong series.

The narrator was brilliant as well and really made the story feel more entertaining and real. I could imagine Marty and Albie better just from the narration.

This book was one of my all-time favorites , not only of this year, but probably of all time .

This book is a nicely paced, fun, and just warm-hearted book that I want everyone to enjoy.

This cozy mystery is a cozy fireplace, in my favourite pjs, while I am on vacation. It has little joys here and there, but just enough joy and excitement to keep my interest.

The story of the two men and their quirky friendship warmed my heart, and I just truly enjoyed this book in a way I wasn't expecting.

If you are looking for a highly suspenseful and heart-pounding book, this isn't it; but if you are looking for adorable, cozy, heartfelt, and a little bit of tension that is perfect for fall- LOOK NO FURTHER. <3

Seriously, the best book.

Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture Audio for this incredible advanced audio copy. All my opinions are my own.

The Armchair Detectives by Matt Dunn is the first book in the same name series and it’s a great start. 84 year-old Martin is in twilight Lodge home for seniors due to recently having a hip replacement. He is also a former Secret agent along with a fellow resident Albie who isn’t as happy to see Martin as Martin is to see him. when a resident with one of the Seaview apartments dies despite Martin knowing she was healthy the day before he becomes intrigued and tries to get Albi on board but not only does Albie hold a grudge against Martin for things that happened in South America but he also has a love interest and competition for that Love interest named Barbara. it’s when he learns of Stanley the second victims death who was also healthy that he try to involve his detective daughter Dion and when she refuses to investigate goes to the local police department still getting no satisfaction he then decides to investigated self with his unwilling partner Alby. The more they investigate the dangerous it gets at the same times having to participate in the residence programs and Al be pursuing his Love interest Barbara this book is so intelligently funny well done and so enjoyable I cannot wait for the next book that I know is coming out at the beginning of next year and anyone who has yet to read this book needs to hop on it if you love cozy mysteries with elderly protagonist that are quickwitted highly intelligent and you love to laugh you will definitely enjoy this book I totally absolutely did.#NetGalley, #TheBlindReviewer, #MyHonestReview, #MattDunn, #TheArmchairDetectives,

The narration of the audiobook by John Hopkins was great. I especially loved his voice for Albie, the reluctant and snarky sidekick. It captured his skeptical personality perfectly. I think the narrator made a mistake towards the end and used his Nigel voice for Martin's dialogue, but it was not a big deal.

This was a fun murder mystery with two seniors investigating in their nursing home. There were some Only Murders in the Building vibes and The Thursday Murder Club. This book is told only from Martin's POV, which I personally prefer.

I enjoyed this and will continue the series. I will say it wasn't as funny as I was hoping, more just lighthearted and silly. Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture Audio for the ALC.

This blew me away a hilarious cozy mystery set in a care home with the detectives being residents. The narration brought this to life for me the voice was perfect. It was a simple who did and why but within it there was so much more. The characters were so well intergrated into the story. One thing i did really enjoy was the fact that as a listener or reader you are never sure if the main detective is a ex spy or if he is suffering from dementia . This was so entertaining the situations they found themselves in trying to solve it alongside the relationship between them and the drip of the past. So pleased to have found this it was great, not sure how a series will follow but i would highly recommend this its funny and its characters perfectly voiced make this 5 stars. I received this audiobook for free from Netgalley & Bookouture Audio.

This was an enjoyable listen, 2 OAPs - one willing and the other having not much of a choice, investigating a string of deaths in their nursing home. Oh, and the willing one is a former spy.

I enjoyed the obvious red herring, wit, Martin's intelligence gathering and his quick thinking, in spite of his new hip, lack of a service weapon and him being 84. Also, Albie wasn't bad himself, even with all his reluctance, he was very helpful.

John Hopkins delivered with his narration. I think my favourite performance of his was during the Mrs Doubtfire scene. I've called it that so as not to spoil anything. The absurdity of Martin & Albie's voices and how much they struggled to keep them up. All in all, he gave a nice and appropriate mellow reading that fits the book.

Matt Dunn’s 'The Armchair Detectives' is a charming, cozy mystery that blends humor with a mystery. Martin, the 84-year-old amateur sleuth, is a lovely protagonist and his witty exchanges with Albie bring both warmth and humour to the story. I appreciated the way the book touched on themes of aging and memory while still keeping the tone light. Some of Albie's remarks made me smile.

The mystery itself is enjoyable, though a bit predictable at times, and some of the supporting cast felt underdeveloped. Still, this was an entertaining, easy read that fans of The Thursday Murder Club and other cozy mysteries will likely enjoy.

I wasn't sure about this one to begin with. After all the blurb did make it seem very similar to Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club. But it turned out to be a joy to listen to.. I loved Martin and Albie and their friendship. What a great team they made. Martin is obviously in the early stages of dementia and needs to carry a notebook at all times in case he forgets. I loved the was he/wasn't he conundrum of what Martin's former job really was, and I'm still not sure, though I know I'd love to believe him :-) The book is definitely fun, and a bit quirky with so many one-liners and laugh out loud moments.. I'll definitely be looking out for the next book in the series.

The audiobook was a fantastic listen and the narrator, John Hopkins, did a great job.

The Armchair Detectives - a book I wasn’t sure I’d like, but immediately fell in love with.
Based in a care home (stay with me), we follow Martin Maxwell who is staying there briefly after a hip replacement. As a former government spy, he immediately notices that folk are dying a little too rapidly and along with his mate Albie, embarks on a murder mystery.
Full of laughs and brilliant investigatory skill and brilliant narrating by John Hopkins, I was hooked from the start.

The Armchair Detectives by Matt Dunn
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I didn’t expect to love a mystery set in a retirement home as much as I did—but wow, this one pulled me in. Martin, at eighty-four, thought his biggest worry would be boredom at Twilight Lodge. Instead, residents start dropping in suspiciously quick succession, and his sharp mind can’t ignore it. With his trusty notebook, walking stick, and the reluctant help of Albie (who is equal parts rival and partner), Martin sets out to uncover the truth.

What made this so fun for me was the voice. Martin is witty, stubborn, and so much sharper than people give him credit for. The banter between him and Albie had me grinning, but the mystery kept me turning pages. There’s a bittersweet undertone too—watching people fight for independence and dignity while also trying to solve a crime makes the stakes hit differently.

It’s clever, heartfelt, and a little unconventional, which is exactly why it stood out from other cozy mysteries I’ve read lately. If you’re looking for something that balances humor with heart and still gives you a solid whodunit, this one’s worth picking up.

✨Book Review - The Armchair Detectives by Matt Dunn
Arc Read
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Armchair Detectives by Matt Dunn is a witty and charming mystery set in a nursing home, where one resident is convinced he was once an undercover spy 🕵️‍♂️. Full of humour, quirky characters, and plenty of banter, it reminded me so much of The Thursday Murder Club. Light, comical, and heartwarming, this cozy whodunnit kept me entertained from start to finish!

Matt Dunn balances humour with intrigue really well—the banter between characters is sharp and entertaining, while the mystery itself is clever enough to keep you guessing without ever feeling too heavy. It’s less about grisly crime scenes and more about community, friendship, and the joy of puzzling out secrets together.

As an ARC read, this was such a refreshing change of pace from the darker thrillers I usually pick up. Funny, engaging, and thoroughly enjoyable—I’ll definitely be looking out for more in this series.

Perfect for anyone who loves a cozy mystery with heart, wit, and a dash of mischief.

First off, thank you to NetGalley, Matt Dunn and Bookouture Audio for the advanced listening copy in exchange for my honest opinions.

I have never read a book by Matt Dunn before and let me tell you, this WILL NOT be my last!

This book is incredibly witty, full of fun references and smart comments. The friendship between Martin and Albie is so comical, earnest and real.

Did I figure out the guilty person? Nope. As always, I am along for the ride. Will I try to figure it out? Sure, but mostly, I’m here for the story. And this story delivers!

Highly recommend!

And yes, I am eagerly awaiting book two because this was lots of fun!

Enter the new hero in the genre of pensioner detectives. As much as a wave this seems to be the ‘in’ thing, Matt Dunn has done it so well with Martin and his exasperated side kick Albie. This mystery is all the more endearing for how well the forgetful, but lively mid eighty year old hero has been portrayed. The acerbic wit runs in healthy form through out the read. For the first of its series, the book has set a nice tone and I do look forward to reading more of this old man’s adventures. And also hoping that Albie remains his forever faithful, despite so not wanting to.

Thanks NetGalley for sending me this treat as an ARC. Congrats Bookotoure for bringing this delightful read to us in October 2025.

A sure shot recommendation from me and best wishes for its release!

I just finished reading You Only Live Once by Haris Orkin and wow do I have a type of book I like to read or what. The story is slower in this book the plot was childish but the humor was great, c’mon a sing along in a retirement community with such titles as “Unforgettable”, “I Will Survive” and “Staying Alive”…priceless.

What I mean by a childish plot is that the assumptions the main characters make about the deaths of several senior residents of this retirement community seemed far fetched and lacked substance. The book is funny but that’s just it, this book is not intriguing, the only thing that I enjoyed when reading it is the hilarity. The actions of the main characters are very repetitive, these two men act extremely naive in their quest for the killer. The why the crimes were committed did not make a lot of sense but like I said before the humorous factor was great. I will read the next one in the series just for the laughs.

Sadly, this one just wasn’t for me, and that’s almost entirely due to the audio narration. I don’t want to be unfair—the book itself is clearly well written—but because I struggled so much with the narration, I can’t say I was the most attentive while listening.

The audiobook was narrated by John Hopkins, and while he did a perfectly fine job, I had trouble connecting with his delivery. His “proper posh British accent” was pleasant but so soothing that it kept lulling me to sleep. More than once I found myself waking up, rewinding, and trying again—only to repeat the cycle.

That said, I’m not giving up on the story. The premise is intriguing, and it feels like the perfect fall mystery. I plan to revisit it when the ebook releases on October 1st, and I have a strong feeling I’ll enjoy it much more in that format.

I fortunate to receive a complimentary ALC from Bookouture Audio via NetGalley, which gave me the opportunity to share my voluntary thoughts.

How I Rate
Because I mostly read ARCs, I focus on how I think fellow readers with similar tastes will respond. I sometimes round up or down based on pacing, prose, or overall impact, and I try to keep my personal preferences from weighing too heavily.

⭐️ 1 Star – Finished, but not for me; I never DNF ARCs.
⭐️⭐️ 2 Stars – Struggled due to writing, content, or editing issues.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3 Stars – Decent read with untapped potential; recommend with some reservations.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 Stars – Really enjoyed it and would recommend for several reasons.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Stars – Exceptional; lingers in my mind well after reading. A story I’d gladly revisit.

Have you ever wondered what it would be likely if James Bond retired ? Well now you don't need to wonder, well sort of and I loved every minute. I am so glad I discovered this book and before it was even ended I was following the author. I really liked the characters. Martin armed with his note pad and Albie with his hearing aids and a wheelchair might not immediately make you think of a top notch spy but who needs a gun (or a martini) when they are around. Move over Bond there is a new guy in town, well okay an elderly guy in a nursing home. The story was well written and it was so easy to picture the characters as they stumbled along in the nursing home and in the investigation that no body else believed was one. The mystery was good and kept you guessing the whole way through, whether there was a murder at the nursing home and even if Martin was actually a spy or a hotel inspector like everybody believes. I really hope there are a lot more books in the series to come, featuring my favourite double Spy act.

When Martin moves into a nursing home to recuperate after a hip replacement he never imagined he would have to dust off his old spy skills. Someone is killing of residents and with everybody putting it down to elderly people die, Martin sets out to prove otherwise. First however he has to enlist the man who he sent to prison, luckily for Martin his former partner Albie has no memory of his life before his stroke. Can Martin and Ablie uncover proof of nefarious goings on at the home? Or will the pair just be shaken up.

I have listened to a lot of audio books but this narrator is one of the more entertaining ones I have heard. I just loved him speaking as a man while impersonating a Scottish woman.
I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Big Thanks to Netgalley, the author, and the Publisher for the advanced copy! I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own

'The Armchair Detectives' is a cozy mystery by Matt Dunn, featuring an ex agent who investigates a crime at his retirement home.

The start of the story was a bit rocky, especially since the main character was not my favourite, but things got better after the first chapters. The side characters were endearing as well, especially Martin's friend. The mystery was also interesting and nicely paced. The whole story actually reminded me of The Thursday Murder Club but without all the things that I hated about that book.

Finally, the audiobook was well narrated and produced.

Thanks to NetGalley and Bookoture, I was able to listen to the audio version of this book before its release in October. It was a cute little “who done it” tale in an elderly setting at a nursing home. The author did well telling the story, and his British accent helped make it more interesting! There was some humor among the characters which was a fun addition. This wasn’t necessarily a book to keep me wanting to listen constantly, but it was enough of a good story to make me to listen to hear the ending.

I loved this! I always worry when the main characters are seniors that the content will be more slapstick, less substance, and that the characters will be portrayed as feeble and complaining; this was not like that at all. I loved Martin, the retired hotelier/spy and Albie, his former partner and current resident of the nursing home in question; both were smart, savvy, and loveable. There was just the right amount of humor and antics without going overboard. The mystery was well-paced, and I enjoyed following along as they tried to figure out what was happening to the residents. Highly recommended!

A charming and clever mystery! I really enjoyed following Martin and Albie as they pieced everything together. It kept me guessing right up until the end, which I loved. The mix of humor, friendship, and murder made for such an engaging read, and the characters felt both quirky and endearing. I especially enjoyed the way the story highlighted the resilience and wit of older sleuths, it gave the story a fresh, delightful spin. John Hopkins was a fabulous narrator who brought each character to life with personality and charm. I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series!

This was witty and had me laughing out loud at points. The author does well to balance humour and intrigue that kept me turning the pages.

The storyline follows Martin and (the reluctant) Albie as they attempt to solve the murder of four residence from the long-term nursing home. Suspiciously they all are in rooms with a sea view.

The character depictions are wonderful and I was rooting for them to solve the mystery before any more residents were murdered. Especially Albie’s new lady friend.

The way the author writes is spectacular. I could picture the scenes as if I was standing next to the characters, working alongside them to solve the case.

The pacing and overall storyline of this book was great. Cosy mystery books are popping up everywhere but this one manages to stand out against the crowd.

If you are a fan of cosy murder mysteries this one is for you!

Shout out to Custard who really has the dream life!

Thanks to NetGalley and bookouture for the early access. Cannot wait for book 2!
