Legend has it that in Baghdad the magnificent, a great and particularly dark-minded vizier, who answers to the name of Iznogoud, works on his ambition to lay claim to the throne of caliph Haroun al Plassid. Thus his favourite saying: “I want to be caliph instead of the caliph!” Seconded by Wa'at Alahf, Iznogoud tries ever more diverse and even crazier means to reach his ends – in vain, of course!
René Goscinny (1926 - 1977) was a French author, editor and humorist, who is best known for the comic book Asterix, which he created with illustrator Albert Uderzo, and for his work on the comic series Lucky Luke with Morris (considered the series' golden age).
Iznogoud is the evil Grand Vizier to the good-natured but slow-witted Caliph of Baghdad Haroun al Plassid. Wanting desperately to be `Caliph instead of the Caliph.' , he comes up continuously with plans to get rid of the incumbent , which always backfire on the miserable Iznogoud. Iznogoud's penchant for evil invention, together with the charming illustrations and witty dialogue makes for charming albums, by the same people who brought you Asterix. In fact in `Asterix and the Magic Carpet' a reference is made to Iznogoud, as Asterix and friends is to battle against Watzisname, Iznogoud's evil cousin in India, in order to save the lovely Princess Orinjade. I was given a couple of these books, as a present when I was eight, and absolutely loved them.
I read a few tattered copies of Iznogoud books when I was young. The English translations sadly went out of print throughout the 90's and early 2000's. Now they are being re-released in English. I do not know if these are new translations. This one is filled with puns and a sprinkling of visual gags.
5 stelle
Yay, Iznogoud akhirnya jadi Khalifah (setelah berepisod-episod mengalami kesialan dan kegagalan), hanya untuk dimakzulkan oleh rakyatnya sementara Iznogoud yang berjiwa Harun Alpusingiah malah jadi khalifah lagi, mumet (MenghibUr MbangET).
Yksinkertaisia kuvia ja hauskoja, oivaltavia ja nokkelia tarinoita.
Lyhyistä tarinoista koostuvassa albumissa Ahmed Ahne haluaa aina vaan kalifiksi kalifin paikalle.
Enjoyable if slight series of short stories about the eponymous character and his absurd attempts to supplant the caliph and take over. He actually manages to do so in the final story, only to have it all go horribly awry. The most amusing story is one in which he tries to abandon the caliph in the desert, to die of thirst. As excessively punny as one might expect from Goscinny, but it lacks the verve and visual genius of the Asterix books.
Ecoutez, patron...
===============
Agak penasaran sama pemilihan nama Iznogoud buat tokoh utamanya yang selalu jahat tapi sial ini, apakah sengaja plesetan dari "IS NO GOOD"?
Ceritanya lucu.
Baca ya kalau mau tahu gimana kekonyolan si Izno :D
This book, originally written in French, is so chock-full of puns, I have to wonder how the translator did it. Some attempted puns are awkward, but the majority of them are quite clever, and, boy, do they keep coming. This is a collection of short, cute, predictable stories, humorous artwork, and a frog to kiss. Probably heaps better in its original French, this is still well worth a read.
The constant word-play is exhausting- it would be funny if there were only one tenth of the puns. Translation to English obviously makes many fail, need to be substituted or go unnoticed- then there's the difference between British word-humour and American.
Six pun-filled tales from ancient Baghdad as the wicked protagonist Iznogoud (think Dick Dastardly) is repeatedly thwarted in his nefarious plans to depose the caliph. Goscinny’s imagination is clearly in evidence but the stories lack the scope of his writing for Asterix.
