I fell in love with Lucky while reading this book. His personality truly pops off the page—charming, clever, and completely unforgettable. The author has crafted a story that not only entertains but also connects on a deeper emotional level.
The writing is excellent—clean, thoughtful, and engaging. What stood out most to me was how skillfully both the characters and narrative are developed. There’s a natural rhythm to the storytelling, free from forced descriptions or overdone figurative language. Everything feels purposeful and perfectly paced.
This book strikes a rare balance: it’s rich with meaning yet entirely accessible, making it resonate with both young and older readers. The themes—friendship, resilience, self-discovery—are universal and handled with sincerity and depth.
The setting, too, deserves praise. Even if you’ve never stepped foot in Florida, by the end of this book you’ll feel like you have. The author’s ability to evoke the environment without overwhelming the reader with detail is a testament to their storytelling skill.

A sweet, wholesome young adult story told by a skilled writer and teacher. So many endearing lessons in this book about conquering fear, learning to navigate heartache, standing up to bullies, and appreciating family and friends. The storyteller lives in the area that provides the landscape for the narrative. Having lived there myself, I attest that the depictions of the beaches, river, shuttle launches, and other scenes are truly realistic. Kudos to the author for weaving a story that takes readers on a never-ending adventure of discovery as the main character matures and experiences life with his new furry companion and loyal protector. Anyone who has a pet, especially one rescued in some way, should be able to relate to the unconditional love and blessing they bring to our lives. The ultimate lesson of Lucky is that we all have the ability to recognize how lucky we are if we just take the time to notice.
