Cameron Bruce Crowe is an Academy Award winning American writer and film director. Before moving into the film industry, Crowe was contributing editor at Rolling Stone magazine, for which he still frequently writes.

Crowe has made his mark with character-driven, personal films that have been generally hailed as refreshingly original and void of cynicism. Michael Walker in the New York Times called Crowe "something of a cinematic spokesman for the post-baby boom generation" because his first few films focused on that specific age group, first as high schoolers and then as young adults making their way in the world.

Crowe's debut screenwriting effort, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, grew out of a novel he wrote while posing for one year undercover as a student at Clairemont High School in San Diego, California, USA. Later, he wrote and directed one more high school saga, Say Anything, and then Singles, a story of Seattle twentysomethings that was woven together by a soundtrack centering on that city's burgeoning grunge music scene. Crowe landed his biggest hit, though, with the feel-good Jerry Maguire. After this, he was given a green light to go ahead with a pet project, the autobiographical effort Almost Famous. Centering on a teenage music journalist on tour with an up-and-coming band, it gave insight to his life as a 15-year-old writer for Rolling Stone. Also, in late 1999, Crowe released his second book, Conversations with Billy Wilder, a question and answer session with the legendary director.

I was very wary and really just looking for Camerone Crow's story and the amazing Ron Howard but pleasantly surprised. All but Natasha Lyonne were fantastic.

1. Camerone Crow: very strong start to the series. Comes across humble yet adventurous and an amazing life that adds to how he writes and tells stories. Remarkable and well organized and well thought out. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

2. Natasha Lyonne never seen her in anything, seemed to be rambling and in the beginning more about complaining about how hard she worked. Chain smoking intellectual is the vibe I believe she wanted to give off and her voice struggles under the weight of the inflammation and irritation from chain smoking. The meandering diatribe does not get better. Skip. ⭐

3. Ron Howard: Spectacular, lots of great stories and very humble. He has worked with so many amazing actors through the decades and I love his approach to movies. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

4. Amy Heckerling: funny, honest, great story teller. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

5. Richard Linklater: very authentic, learned a lot. Very humble and wise. He said something like, “Your passions aren’t their passions (about a rejection). The world doesn’t reward your passions.” That really resonated with me and he seemed so grateful to be able to do what he does. How many of us get to have the world care about our passions? Not so many. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

6. Chloe Zhao: although I am not a fan of all her movies (I did not like Eternals) I loved her honesty, her heartfelt approach to her craft and devoted sincerity. I was very impressed with her and her take on actors and her process. First class person and appreciated her take on movies. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I really loved Cameron Crowes chapter but I loved all the movies he talks about. But his story telling and the way he narrators made it fun.
I gave a super brief try of the other chapters but I didn’t watch their movies so wasn’t interested. The Cameron Crowe chap is worth it. He talks about how he got started and the making of iconic films.

I will be honest this was interesting- to a point. I loved hearing Ron Howard- he is a favorite by far. But I also enjoyed listening to Cameron Crowe and Richard Linklater. Amy Heckerling was okay - I liked hearing about her working on 'Clueless.' But the others I forwarded through.

Hey Audible - I want more of these free behind-the-scenes stories of movies from a small amount of filmmakers
Really enjoyed the behind-the-scenes stories of how movies got developed, who or who didn't get the part(s) but especially the soundtrack developments of certain movies.

- Cameron Crowe - highly recommend reading his contributions. The most fascinating IMHO
- Ron Howard - wanted so much more from his insights
- Chloe Zhao - didn't really know of Chloe, but heard of her movies. Only seen one, but I'm interested in catching more of her style of storytelling.
- Amy Heckerling - nice tie-in with Cameron Crowe, tho different aspects of the same movie (Fast Times at Ridgemont High)
- Natasha Lyonne - that voice, iconic. Didn't have a clue she was a filmmaker.
- Richard Linklater - another interesting storyteller. Can't believe him & Cameron Crowe didn't work on School of Rock together?!

The Film Makers was a truly enjoyable listen, perfect for film buffs or just plain lovers of movies.

Cameron Crowe talked about Fast Times, Almost Famous, and Jerry Maguire. Ron Howard got into his collaborations with Russell Crowe and Tom Hanks while discussing technique and growing up both in front of and behind the camera. Richard Linklater remincested on the "Before" trilogy and told fun stories about trying to get Led Zep tunes in his films. Amy Heckerling, with her fantastic Bronx accent, also had a few things to say about Fast Times as well as Look Who's Talking and Clueless. Each director spoke around an hour and, honestly, could have kept on going.

I was not as personally invested in either Natasha Lyonne nor Chloé Zhao. Natasha has a great voice and some amusing comments. Likewise Chloé really sold her insight on the Marvel Eternals movie, but neither speaker had the impact nor the experiential gravitas of their contemporaries.

For a free "Audible Original", The Film Makers was a pleasant trip full of movie memories.

Hard to review a book that’s just people talking about their lives. I found this very intriguing and I recommend it to anyone who considers themselves or aspires to be a storyteller. Each of these directors had a different background, inspiration, and opinion on the artistic process and it was amazing to listen to.

There were a lot of interesting anecdotes and insights from well known filmmakers. The best, for me, was Ron Howard because I had taught so many of his films. Worth the read.

a rough ranking of my preference for three talks/ interviews based on fascinating anecdotes and some bits of humor:
1) Richard Linklater
2) Natasha Lyonne (even though she technically hasnt even directed a film yet)
3) Ron Howard
4) Chloe Zhao
5) Cameron Crowe
6) Amy Heckerling (though the two of them both made Fast Times so you get a full picture of the making and reception of that, which is great)
