Being an adult is a scam.
I closed the back cover of this book and had an immediate thought that I would be back to read this again very soon. I need to take a highlighter through this and gather all the hilarious moments to add to this review. For now I'll briefly discuss the reasons I loved this story, and why it is now in my top three favorites by SusuKhaa.
Reason #1 - Hating on Frank
I was unsure why the ex-boyfriend, Frank, got so much page time in this love story between Dao & Blu. It took me a while to understand that he is there to be a literal punching bag. He is: punched in the face by numerous characters, slapped by his mother because he is an actual garbage human and is hurting other people that she loves, and gloriously hosed by one of Dao's firefighters after she kicks a boot right at his chest. (These are the best bits, I will be back with more specifics quotes from the book.)
Reason #2 - The found family
SusuKhaa writes an amazing friend group or found family into almost everyone of her stories. This one is amazing with their quiet support of and real loyalty to Dao & Blu. There are numerous occasions for them all to come together, in celebration and hard times. The fact that this book ends with one such gathering is the cherry on top.
Reason #3 - Dao & Blu
Obviously the couple at the center of this story is the main reason to love this book. The two of them overcome many obstacles on their journey to a happy ending, and it is such a beautiful ending. I'm not going to spoil it any further than to say there is a five year time jump in the very last chapter and it melted me into goo.
Reason #4 - Their Pet Names
The pet names are the best, and I will post them all here when I return after a reread.
