A ticking biological clock shouldn't feel like a time bomb! Learn what you need to know about modern fertility to help take control of your reproductive future—from egg and embryo freezing to IVF, surrogacy, and beyond.
Women are born with all the eggs they will ever have, and 90 percent of them are gone by age 30. The eggs that remain will decline in both quantity and quality, making it increasingly difficult to become pregnant around the same time that many women are focused on finding a life partner, building their career, or both. But Jaime Knopman, MD, wants you to know that science has advanced, the world has transformed, and the choices available to us have changed too.
For years, Dr. Knopman’s practice in a thriving New York City–based fertility clinic focused on infertility; now, she is primarily a fertility specialist who helps countless women and couples understand and utilize the latest options that can offer reproductive freedom. This shift is profound, as everything about the way we can, and increasingly do, make babies has changed, with implications that extend far beyond family planning.
In Own Your Fertility, Dr. Knopman and coauthor Rebecca Raphael offer an accessible modern-day overview of how advancements in the field of fertility treatment have transformed the path to pregnancy, while also sounding the alarm that women in particular can—and should—take control of their reproduction. Whether you’re trying to get pregnant, thinking about having a baby in the future, or simply want to keep your options open, this book is your guide to all things reproductive planning, from egg and embryo freezing to IVF, sperm and egg donors, and surrogacy.
Grounded in science, data, and decades of experience with patients from all walks of life, Own Your Fertility debunks common fertility misconceptions and empowers you to make informed, intentional, and proactive decisions about your body and your future.
Feeling informed and empowered. Dr. Knopman helps to reeducate us about our bodies and provides the ability to have full control of them. Even if having children isn't in your future, fertility discussions are important. How difficult it can be to have a child, along with the emotional and mental toll it can take is not talked about nearly enough. There are so many options for those who want children and those who don't!
Informative, factual, and empowering. The authors are clear in their intent and in drawing a crystal clear line between scientific evidence and medically-informed opinion - which is so important in a book like this. I am certain I will return to this book many times over the course of my fertility journey and life.
Own Your Fertility: From Egg Freezing to Surrogacy, How to Take Charge of Your Body and Your Future by Jaime Knopman is an empowering, no-nonsense 4-star guide for anyone navigating reproductive choices today. Knopman cuts through myths with straight talk about egg quantity declining after age 30, IVF realities, and modern options like freezing and surrogacy. The book excels at making complex science accessible, blending data with patient stories to explain timelines, success rates, and costs without sugarcoating challenges. Practical advice on banking eggs early, donor options, and building a fertility plan feels proactive and realistic, especially for career-focused women or those facing delays. While some sections overlap on basics, the structure supports quick reference, and Knopman's optimism—rooted in real advancements—leaves you informed and hopeful. Own Your Fertility equips you to own your reproductive future rather than letting biology dictate it. Highly recommend for anyone in their 20s–40s planning ahead. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review

This is an extremely necessary book for anyone with a uterus and ovaries, especially starting in their twenties. Own Your Fertility is packed with clear facts, practical information, and myth-busting truths that I truly wish I had known years ago.
As someone currently going through a fertility journey, I didn’t realize how difficult getting pregnant could be, and reading this made me think how I wish I had known all this in my early twenties. The authors do an incredible job explaining the science, options, timelines, and realities of fertility in a way that feels empowering rather than overwhelming. It’s honest, informative, and deeply eye-opening.
I listened to this as an audiobook, and while the narrator did an excellent job, this is actually a book I’d recommend reading in physical or e-book form if possible. The format, charts, and detailed explanations really lend themselves to a more immersive, reference-style read that you can go back to again and again.
This is the kind of book everyone with reproductive organs that allow for pregnancy should read before they think they need it.
