For decades, Princess Pineberry has played the fragile damsel in distress in her popular fantasy role-playing video game.
Growing tired of the same old routine of being kidnapped and rescued, Pineberry wishes for nothing more than to fight her own battles and explore the world outside of her beloved Mooncake Kingdom. When she gets kidnapped (again), she accidentally activates a dangerous glitch which causes a storm of bugs to crash the game, resulting in an instant 'Game Over' for herself and everyone she holds dear.
Awakening from her demise, Pineberry finds herself in the dark recesses of RAM (Random Access Memory); a desolate world within the game console's hard-drive, populated by other video game sprites on the verge of deletion.
The memory stock of this world will soon be wiped clean by garbage disposal programs called 'sweepers'. And just like every other sprite in RAM, Pineberry is a junk file on the run. However, she is not ready to just disappear forever and refuses to go out without a fight. It's not game over just yet.
Teaming up with some unlikely friends in the form of Captain Sigrid and her crew of sky paladins, Pineberry joins in their battle against the sweepers and their leader, a corrupt software who wishes to unleash destruction upon both the computer and player realms. With the help of the sky paladins and her new-found strength and bravery, Pineberry embarks on the adventure of a lifetime, discovering the world outside her video game for the first time and who she really is.
PRINCESS PINEBERRY AND THE SKY PALADINS OF RAM is a stand-alone litRPG fantasy adventure novel for all ages inspired by classic SNES RPGs like CHRONO TRIGGER, THE SECRET OF MANA, and THE LEGEND OF ZELDA. Combining the intergalactic space pirate adventures of TREASURE PLANET and the whimsical video game charm of WRECK-IT RALPH, PRINCESS PINEBERRY AND THE SKY PALADINS OF RAM is the perfect read for both hardcore gamers and non-gamers alike.

I'm brand new to Goodreads and book reviewing in general but I wanted to leave a review for this book because I loved it so much and I'm a huge fan of the author so here goes!
I subscribed to Laura-Louise Slattery's Substack a while ago, and I love her writing and comics so I was very excited to hear that she had a book coming out. Plus it's so cool that she illustrated the book cover/back cover herself. I love when authors also draw their own character art and book covers.
Princess Pineberry And The Sky Paladins Of RAM is a YA litRPG epic fantasy novel about a video game character called Princess Pineberry who is fed up with playing the damsel in distress in her popular fantasy video game, Lunam Knight. She wants to be the one who goes on adventures and battles monsters and saves the day from the villain. In an attempt to escape her boring Mooncake Kingdom, she activates a dangerous glitch which causes her video game world to disappear entirely and be wiped off the computer system. She wakes up in a strange dark digital hellscape called RAM where other video game characters are trapped and are being hunted down by garbage disposal programs called sweepers. Princess Pineberry ends up running into a rebel group of video game warriors called the Sky Paladins who help her fight against the sweepers and she assists them in their battle against Krylser, a villainous software who wants to take over the entire computer world as well as the real world outside the computer system.
I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book at first because I'm not much of a gamer and I've only read one litRPG book ever which was Dungeon Crawler Carl (which I adored!) It's safe to say I also adored Princess Pineberry And The Sky Paladins Of RAM with my whole heart! It was such a fun and epic read. I was hooked from the first chapter and I struggled to put the book down from time to time which is very rare for me. The writing was so descriptive, unique, and fast-paced and was so easy to read. It was very easy for me to just get sucked into the story.
I really enjoyed the characters and their whole dynamic. They were so engaging and I found myself really rooting for them throughout the book with their conflict with the sweepers and Krysler. At first, I didn't care for Princess Pineberry because I found her to be very selfish and bratty but she really grew as a character as the story went on. She learns how to be a better person, learns how to defend both herself and her friends from danger, and falls in love. I think if you love films like Wreck-It Ralph and Tron, you will really enjoy this book. The setting was so fascinating and I loved the LGBTQ+ representation in the book too. I got a strong Minecraft vibe from the world-building and the aesthetic of RAM which was so interesting to read.
I was a beta reader for this book! I've been following Laura-Louise Slattery's comic book work for a while and I'm so happy that she's releasing this novel in December! I'm honored to have been a beta reader for her because I had so much fun reading this. It was definitely up my alley because I love litRPG fantasy books.
Princess Pineberry was a standout LGBTQ+ protagonist with so much humor and heart. I loved how this book blended classic SNES/PlayStation 1 video game vibes with epic fantasy adventure and an emotionally rich story about identity/existence/free will, etc. I personally loved how it paid homage to various classic video games like Super Mario, Metroid, Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Trigger, and The Legend Of Zelda. Also it has the cutest lesbian romance ever between Princess Pineberry and Captain Sigrid! I LOVED THEM SO MUCH!
Even though this book is technically considered middle grade, I would say it feels more like YA. I'd highly recommend this book if you love litRPGs and you're looking for something fun and uplifting to read.
Firstly thank you to the author for kindly allowing me to be on the arc team for Princess Pineberry. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it. The genre of this book wouldn't be one I usually would pick up but I love picking up other genres every now and again and I loved this one. This book is definitely a fun and quirky book with such a unique storyline.
Princess Pineberry for decades has played the damsel in distress in her fantasy role playing video game. She longs to be free and slaying the dragons instead of always waiting to be rescued. One day, when she's kidnapped within the game she accidentally activates a glitch which causes a storm of bugs to crash the game, resulting in a game over. Princess Pineberry is transported to the world of RAM, a desolate world with other video game characters trying to survive the wrath of sweepers who delete them. The princess finds herself making unlikely allies in a quest to save themselves in this RAM world.
The pacing in this book is definitely fast paced, keeping the reader on the edge of their seat. At any point in the book a character could be deleted so it's definitely high stacks. As it's so fast paced, I actually finished this book in one sitting. I loved both the villains and good characters, the character development and the storyline throughout. The key themes of friendship and determination are also strong points. I loved being in the inner mind of the characters in the game in such a unique setting of their thoughts when the game isn't being played. So unique! The determination of Princess Pineberry to be more than a damsel in distress was also key to the story including the expectations of her character to be a certain way but life in RAM changes all of that for her.
Overall, a very interesting fantasy adventure story full of great characters. Princess Pineberry is out on December 1st!
This book reminded me a lot of the super mario film and wreck it Ralph I actually wouldn’t mind watching it as a film as it was that descriptive I wish I could actually see what was happening on a screen. In the first few chapters at first I felt for Princess pine berry but then I saw her as selfish because yes she was thinking about her own misery but she didn’t seem to think what could happen to everyone else BUT she also wasn’t to know what could happen to everyone else. So I was torn in how i felt about her at first. Towards the middle of the book I got a love hate relationship towards pineberry, all in all there was a turn of events i didn’t see coming. Fig on the other hand, Ugh how annoying
