Where exactly is she going? Because this isn’t the life that Emerson had planned… Emerson Mack is definitely not heading down the right road. That would have led her to marriage to her long-term boyfriend, a job in a lab, a house with a terrace, and the promise of stability. Happiness? Love? Not necessarily, and that was ok. But now, she’s totally off course, alone in an apartment with the window stuck shut and with a cat that thinks it’s too good for her. Stability? Nope, that’s nonexistent, just like her former boyfriend. He’s gone, as is everything else that she was counting on. Luckily, she gets the chance to turn in a different direction, and a guy named Levi is on this new road, too. He’s definitely a project, but his problems won’t scare her off. Emerson knows that she can get him sorted out, if he’ll just give her that chance, and she can fix her own problems, too! She can force a bond of friendship that will give them both what they need. In his case, that means stepping up to responsibility and adulthood, and moving away from the past that’s pulling him down. But what does she want? Where is she steering now, and can she take Levi along with her? Who’s at the wheel, anyway? And are they heading toward love and happiness, or will things end in another crash?
I loved this book going back to Detroit. Some of my favorite characters were brought back. I highly recommend this book. Everything Jamie Bennett writes is excellent. Definitely a 5 star.
Once again, Jamie gives us a story about a woman who has faced adversity but works to put their life back together. In the meantime, there is a cast of side characters that you are drawn to and want more of. Add in a guy who has his own struggles and works to put his life together as well. In Jamie's books, we get to witness a love story evolve. It happens slowly with little gestures and support and kindness, just as we hope to see in our own lives. She is the queen of slow burns!!
I take away half a star because there are quite a few typos, but they don't take away from the overall book. It's just a pet peeve of mine.
I love the quirky banter of Jamie Bennett's characters within her stories, so funny and entertaining. However, I don't enjoy when she gives her characters weak and pathetic personalities. I can't get into a story if I don't like the people. There is no vested interest and therefor I don't want to continue reading. This is one of those books. Why make Emerson such a doormat? Why make Levi such a loser?
I may come back to this book, but for now I'm going to start reading something else.
DNF 31%. As Jamie Bennett’s duds go, Emerson is too much of a dud. Levi is also too boring, their connection—or lack thereof—is particularly nonexistent.
a very entertaining 3.5 stars. i’ll read anything by this author. you can always rely on human characters with unique quirks and loveable flaws, navigating the twists and unexpected bumps of life in funny, heartwarming and life-affirming ways.
