At AWP, I kept passing by the cover of The Universal Corner Poems and pausing. Something in me wanted to spend time with it. (Of course, I caved and bought it.) This book makes great use of the way music imprints itself on our past. Douglas takes inspiration from a variety of musical traditions: soul to classical to punk to hip-hop. Quotes from musicians open each section from Elton John and Labelle to Jimi Hendrix and Charles Mingus. Douglas lets his words dance across the page. He excels in prose poems and even has a concrete poem in the center ("Persimmons"). This book lives up to its cover. I'm so glad I stopped to pick it up.
